The best strategy is to buy multiples of a single monster.

If you spread out your buys, you only get one return each time one of your pokemon are purchased. But if you buy 5 of the same pokemon, you get 5x returns from each purchase. You'll make back your ENTIRE investment after 100 more of that pokemon are sold, instead of needing 500 purchases to make it back if you bought 5 different pokemon.
