ITT We make characters based on our name meanings.

First and Middle names relate to the individual while the Surname relates to your family or house.

>Every group of five Surnames will create a city with history and lore with the descriptions of the Surnames combined.
>Then the next five Surnames will be a neighboring city, and so on.

ITT we also build a country based on our names.

>Free Man
>Lover of Earth
>Defender of Mankind/Sand

The first city has a military based in a desert or on a beach.

My name is uncommon enough that only a couple hits, including myself in the first couple spots, pop up from a google search.

Why in god's name would I post this information on Veeky Forums?

>Priceless/Highly Praiseworthy
>Famous Warrior
>Horse/Horseman

So I'm Theoden or something.

>explains the difficulty of finding out their name
Guess I can help him ou-
>wasn't going to contribute anyway
Hrm.

Well, this site is my go to etymology site:
familyeducation.com/baby-names

>Defender of Mankind/Sand
>Horse/Horseman

Arabian Nights so far

>God is With Us
>Blessed
>Lamb of God
A sheepfolk cleric I guess?
A vast majority of names have religious meanings, so there are gonna be a lot of paladins and clerics and the like here

How should we incorporate Lamb of God into ?

Is the lamb of God innocence or something? My heresy is showing?

The lamb is a symbol of innocence/purity so like, I guess they're really pure or something, I dunno man

Pure in the sense that they're innocent or pure as in they're God's chosen?

>Who is like god?
>Masculine
>Walled fortification

Not creative enough to draw some lines here. What do your guys think?

The fire beard that brings to heel.

Well thats not subtle

>First name translates into "Christ-bearer".

Fuck you, God! Stop Magical-Realming me!

>will helm (or, more loosely, vehement protector)
>fame-bright
>either "valley of the deer" or "hard tooth," depending which etymology you accept
What did my parents mean by this?

My name is Victor Merchant. I don't think it needs to be elaborated on.

>Defender of Mankind/Sand
>Horse/Horseman
>Lamb of God
>Walled Fortification
>???

We now have great defenses protecting a great city. Buy what's the Surname for ? We almost have our first city ready.

He Who is Like God? means that no one is truly like God, but you could be like the archangel Michael. The description of Masculine may make you a man of men, combined with being like an Archangel, you are a holier Adonis. Walled Fortification being your Surname means your whole family played a part in creating the walls around your place of origin being a fine constructor or mason.

Enthusiastic guy who will bring victory to his people. And my last name is from a village in Scotland, so I'll say his family are Scottish minor nobility, or something.

You're a masculine philosopher from the family that built the walls in the Arabian city.
You're evil. Or Irish.

>Treasure Swan of Noble Birth
It sounds like some fairy tale princess when I write it like that. Although I'm a pretty tough guy in real life.

Be proud, you're named after a gnoll.

You bear the miraclear of Christ in your heart and soul, not your womb. But if you did, that's a double miracle.

Second City:
>Valley of the Deer/Hard Tooth
>Merchant
>Scottish Nobility

A growing Scottish Nobility that settled in a valley that harbored peaceful deer and other hard-toothed creatures, learning from both. They're also excellent merchants.

What's the Surname here? Noble Birth?

>God remembers
>Clever
>Bird

Tengu cleric of a god of knowledge. I might actually steal this for my next campaign.

You're a hippie from the royal family.
You're a great warrior from a family of royal guards who ride horses.
You're the head priest of the city. Sheep are the city's Holy symbol, and your family takes care of special sheep.
You're the city's greatest philosopher, a manly man from the lineage of the great wall-builders who built the city's great fortifications.
Last name?

This is a great walled city in the desert, where horse-riding and sheep-herding are very important.

Swan.

>sad

fitting i gues

>Young warrior
>Descendant of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór

idk man, but metal lmao

>Baptist
>the white/the bright
>the cattleman
Religious leader, or a nomadic proselyte

So Jerusalem?

James (Variant on Hebrew "Heel" as in "bring to heel")
Hayes (From Scottish God of fire)
Barber (from Latin for beard)

Close to.

You're also an important priest who symbolically tames the Fire God, and you all have great beards.

>God is my judge
>winning/victorious
>son of (manly/brave)

So, I had to do a bit of a work-around because of the "son of" last name, so I looked up the meaning of that name as well.

In that case, it looks like my character would be a cleric or paladin who is the son of a great warrior or hero.

>Broad-shouldered
>Son of Rock
>One who says "TS" instead of "CH"

That's quite clearly a dwarf with a slight speech impediment.

You're a famous knight from the family who first discovered the land of the second city.
You're a really good merchant.
The enthusiastic leader of the city, probably led his people to victory in a war. Scottish.
You're a rich noble with the Swan as your symbol, perhaps as a symbol of the city in general.
You're a clever priest-historian from the same Swan family.

A settlement in a valley full of deer, now a successful merchant town with Scottish nobles. The Swan is your symbol.

A growing Scottish Nobility that settled in a valley that harbored peaceful deer, venerable swans, and other hard-toothed creatures, learning from all the creatures surrounding their home. They're also excellent merchants who use and revere the birds as a trade and a tool.

Thanks for the character profiles. But hippie? I prefer down to Earth.

Third City:
>Descendant of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór
>Cattlemen
>Son of Manly/Brave
>One Who Says "TS" Instead of "CH"
I'm gonna need some help with this one.

You complete City 1 with Beard. We're pretty much

Middle name? And tell us about your ancestor.

> Raised nobleman ready for battle
>From the mount of mapple trees

Sounds like a guy who got his position by pure luck and now tries to impress some rural court. What a loser.

Defender of Men
Supplanter
Bright Forest

Mercenary-Revolutionary from forested area?

>Luminescent One
>Grain Dealer
>Daughter of Protector

>Descendant of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór
>Cattlemen
>Son of Manly/Brave
>One Who Says "TS" Instead of "CH"
>From the Mount of Mapple Trees
I'm still at a lost, damn you "TS""CH"

Fourth City:
>Bright Forest
>Daughter of the Protector

I don't know much about geography, but I don't think its possible for City 1 to be neighbors with City 2 or City 3, being a desert and all.

>God of war
>Hammer
>Rooster who digs ditches
The last name sounds a bit too specific, but I guess the character could be good at digging moats or something, like a warrior of moats and holes in ground.

If it helps, it refers to an ethnic minority (now assimilated) that was nicknamed so because of their dialect which replaced "CH"s with "TS"s

Ok, so we have a descendent of an Irish king, cattle men, another Irish "son of" last name where the name means brave or manly, and an odd manner of speech...

A town founded by holy warrior who is the son of a mighty hero, and descended from an ancient foreign king. Many in the town still speak in an accent that reflects their original nationality. The town is also known for it's beef and dairy products.

>Descendant of Conchobar mac Taidg Mór
I think if you get the meaning of each part, you get something like "descendant of "lover or canines" son of "great dwelling"

>Bright Forest
>Daughter of the Protector
>Rooster Who Digs Ditches
This could be nearing the whimsical with the appropriate names.

I like it.

>lives west of town
>son of Maddi
>fisher
I'm a pretty comfy npc

The shiny forest city protected by the battlecocks led by a warrior countess.

>Bright Forest
>Daughter of the Protector
>Rooster Who Digs Ditches
>Fisher

This and it's also a fishing villiage. But battlecocks are a bit extreme unless this world is full magical. Rooster is defintely the symbol here, but Riding Cocks too?

>Justice
Paladin?
>ruler
So im a just king
>bear
What ever this civilization is, it has a large population of sapeint bears

>Manly (Goat)

>Common Blackbird

A manly man who is also a goat shepherd, probably a sturdy strong farmer, either a former soldier or just a naturally tough, strong and masculine peasant. He comes from a family of humble and simple origins, like the humble common black bird.

I'd risk saying he's a community leader with no formal title that the farmers and commoners of the land can get behind, probably a guy that has a bad rep between the nobles but is also perceived as useful. He can talk down a angry crowd during a period of drough from ransacking the town/city's granary, but he can also be the one leading a protest of peasants demanding justice for the misdeeds of a highborn.

A race of religious sheep people used there Knowledge of Fire and Horsemanship to establish a Jericho style city in the desert.

Also they have sweet beards.

I haven't been checking the post numbers,
I guess im withSo a forest fishing village of bear people,
Chinken people, led by a warrior countess and just bear king?

>Bright Forest
>Daughter of the Protector
>Rooster Who Digs Ditches
>Fisher
>Bear
How magical do we want this world to be?

Fifth City
>Blackbird

I love that there's this motif of each city having two animal guides

>City One's Horses and Sheep
>City Two's Deer and Swans
>City Three's Cattle and ... Men
>City Four's Roosters and Bears
>City Five's Blackbirds and ???

>the supplanter
>who lives in the forest
>near the willow tree.

So I'm some kind of medieval guerrilla leader

Maybe the Riding Cocks are a bit much, could be just an order of protectors.
They just need a rooster related name, like Order of The Roost or Sentinels of The Bright Forest / etc

>Descendant of the gods
>Dedicated to Demeter
>Servant of God
Ehhh, cleric all the way

god's judge
victorious
bearded

did that really happen?

>Behold a Son
>Man, or alternatively, Army/Soldier
>Yellow

I'm a generic soldier form a far eastern kingdom.

Does God exist?

I think we need to slow down on the anthro. Magic is defintely in this world but adding anthromorphism into this will just distract us. It can be cool, but it can turn to /d/ real fast.

Animals in the descriptions could mean they live alongside said animals as a custom, whether it's a act of faith or a particular trade.

>The flag bearer
>Which God praises
>Descendant of Peter (meh)

God gimmes thy holy tendies

Little Hammer
Lamb
Of the wild(erness)

I have no idea what to do with it...

A hammer welding shepherd that lives in the woods?

dunno, but again even Baneposting has some strange magic

Richard, meaning king or lord I think.

And King Conchobar was one of the high kings of Ireland and his name pretty much became the basis of the O'Connor clan.

Defending Man
Germanized Slavic name for pic related
Son of Christian

Bird themed Paladin.

Yes! That thread proves it.

City Five sigil is a black bird wings spread over a Willow tree.

>noble
>noble, bright
>noble intelligent

so some sort of educated noble? some sort of mage

Noble
Joking
Hillperson

Well, I guess I'm an inbred hillbilly with a sense of humor?

>Blackbird
>Near the Willow Tree
>Servant of God
>Bearded
>Yellow
Gonna need some help on this one.

Sixth City
>Descendent of Peter
>Of the Wilderness
>Son of Christian
>Noble Intelligent
One more needed for Intelligent and Faithful Children of the Wild.

>From the dark village
>from the ash tree village
>land suitable for grazing
So I'm either an edgy duid, or a ranger from a village deep in the woods, and the city is probably full of cattle farms do to having good land.

The Descendent of Dog Lover guy

How about your city was founded by a guy who bonded with a dog people race and do the city has them as an ethnic group.

Like the Sheep Jews, Dog Scots and Deer Hippies, various human races with nonhuman minorities

>World ruler
>farmer
>housekeeper

I have no idea. Some poor guy with illusions of grandeur? A tyrant from modest origins?

So, religious wood elves?

>supplanter
>wolf

Some edgy guy leading a rebellion

The Cedar Forests of Lebanon were a legendary neighbor of Sumeria.

>Descendent of Peter
>Of the Wilderness
>Son of Christian
>Noble Intelligent
>Hillperson

Seventh City
>Land Suited for Grazing
>???
>Housekeeper
>Wolf
Whats the missibg Surname name here? And for the anthro stuff, I'm not sure how tame people are to keeping things away from furbait. Let's just keep it as a communion between the city and its chosen animals as I said earlier here

>offshoot of the name Augustine. Specifically St. Augustine

>Irish baby name. Offshoot of the Scandinavian god of war "Tyr"

>a prominent Scottish clan. Known for dedication to a chosen cause.

A Scottish themed paladin?

>Manly
>Dark Water
>Son of Kay

Make way for the Macho Pirate descended from an Arthurian style Knight.

But it reminds me of Tarkir.

I love Tarkir.

>I have done linguistic research that the name David actually originates in the indo european word for god or day.
Root for the word David is beloved.
Name Judah and David are etymologically related.
Judah means praised, specifically holy praise.
David used to be the god Dod.
Which I hypothesis that Dod simply meant god, love and god once been synonymous. probably loaned from Indo-european...
OR WHAT IF THERE'S A LINK THE SEMITIC LANGUAGES AND THE INDO EUROPEANS THOUSANDS OF YEARS

I HAVE THE PUZZLES OF A KEY FOR ALL THE WISDOM IN THE UNIVERSE

>One who is remembered by God
>Seventh bloody avatar of Vishnu
>Grocery clerk

I really want to play a Cleric in a game of Houses and Humans.

Here, My last name is a Scottish Clan too, so I guess we know the theme for our city so far.

I have four middle names so this should be interesting...

>Sacred Name
>A wine bottle equal to 16 ordinary wine bottles
>The covering of God
>Free Will

hmmm...so a holy person who enjoys a LOT of wine and does whatever they want.

interesting.

>Irish First name, meaning "Gentle" Source Latin.
>Irish surname meaning "Soldier that walks with a Cane" source Gaelic
Welp, I dunno.

An older, kind veteran?

>an alcoholyc

A vaugely Scottish Holy City, with a focus on the growth and selling of food.

>Lucky
>Bright as the day
>From the Pleasure Mountain

A bard who fucks a girl in every settlement he visits.

>First/Middle Names
>Venerable or Majestic
>Nobleman
>"Who is like God?"/Angel
I've got two middle names.
>Last Name
>"Place of Holly Trees"/"Son of the Bringer of Wisdom"

A venerable, well-liked and handsome nobleman, thought to be descended from the gods, from a family of well-educated people who like to keep their estate flourishing

>Land Suited for Grazing
>??? (Dog Lover?)
>Housekeeper
>Wolf
>Prominent Scottish clan. Known for dedication to a chosen cause.

Eighth City
>Son of Kay
>???
>Grocery Clerk
>???
>Soldier That Walks With a Cane

Is David your last name though?
And is Sacred Wine Covering Free Will's Surname in there?

I miss Anafenza too

Okay, gang. We're nearing 10 cities and I want to do something with all of these places. Anyone have a clue on how Civilization threads work?

Valdemar is a couple of ancient words that mean; praised/power/great/peace/rule.
Or basically: a great "holy" king. Or a blessed powerful rule. Or simply someone who's great and praised for it.

>one who dips in water
>the short
I'm the only dwarf who actually likes taking baths.

Ninth City
>From Pleasure Mountain (?)
>Place of Holly Trees/Son of the Bringer of Wisdom
>A Great Holy King/Blessed Powerful Rule
>The Short

>A man who is like God
>Family owns a mill

I feel like some unholy NPC/Chosen One hybrid or something.
Or maybe some lost demigod that the players must drag into some adventure, but he just wants to live in his comfy village.

>Treasurer
>Magnus's stream
>Twin

So I'm a banker Druid whose a twin? Help me out guys, this is an odd combination...

You're a metaphorical banker, your treasure is nature itself. Your twin is some fucked up abomination chasing you.

Only you're not the original.

You are the dry season, keeping all of nature's beauty to yourself and leaving the world dry. Your brother is the rain season, showring the world with bountiful gifts.

>Of the Earth
>Gift of God
>Barrel/keg alt. etymology Fish
Johnny Appleseed style fruit farmer (brewer/vintner) / land owner. Preposterously good luck.

>Defender of man
>Grace of god
>Bold/Couragious
