He's so greedy that he won't spend a penny unless his life depends on it.

Define obnoxious.

You know the average knight was pretty fucking rich, right? To put it in modern terms, the modern day knights would be the only people who can afford to pay a tank out of pocket and still have enough money left to buy a nice villa. And in medieval terms they are the 99% of the 1%. Surely you can write a knight who isn't a mary sue or obnoxious, right?

have them be youre universe's george soros and/or koch brothers

Have them be a fun, free-spirited adventurer who's willing to help the party out with his finances.

I think of Setzer from FFVI, although I'm not sure if he was proper rich.

...didn't FF6's party also include an honest to god Prince Regent as well though?

Like, not an exiled Prince, or a Prince from a destroyed nation, but an actual Prince ruling as King and beloved by his small but technologically advanced kingdom?
Surely HE should have been rolling cash?

Yeah, you right. Edgar was pretty rich, too. And Edgar had TOOLS.

And TOOLS RULES. Okay, Edgar would be a pretty great model, too. Although he was the king, not the prince.

It is theoretically possible to be a rogue trader without being obnoxious.

I wasn't sure if his dad was dead or just so ill that Edgar was just regent.

He said not obnoxious.

Nah the soldiers straight call him "King Edward". Sabin ran off when Gesthalt killed dad because he didn't want to be king.

Did your character make himself rich or become rich through circumstance?

If it's the former have him be the cheapest of cheapskates that will always prefer risking his neck and getting his hands dirty if it means saving money, and because of that he can relate with the lower classes because he is earning his bread by working not sitting on his ass.

If it's the later have him be a innocent idiot with no clue how money works.

Batman

>How do I make an interesting character who is massively rich

Make an interesting character, then add in that they're rich. The interesting part doesn't have to have anything to do with their money.

>Batman
>not obnoxious in a TTRPG
k

If you remove his preference for working alone (or with Robin) and don't try to be The Protagonist then Batman would be fine in pnp.

So you really mean Night Owl.

In a Burning Wheel game I ran one of my players played a character with 7 resources at character creation. Usual starting characters have 1 or 2. This character was absurdly rich, this was however balanced by his total lack of any useful skills for anything other than making more money. He was basically the party's enabler, he made sure the other PCs had the stuff they need to do their stuff.

It has never been observed in the wild, though.

Why would a character being massively rich make them obnoxious or a Mary Sue? What system are you even having this issue in?

Have them find some idiot noble and trick them out of their fortune.

He was robbed and is adventuring inorder to get it all back

Beat me to it

A love of filthy hoors

Sounds like someone needs some cultural enrichment until they come around...
