Urban adventure

What are some good modern/urban locales or settings for adventure?

New York. London. Paris. Berlin. Tokyo. Barcelona.

I've always been partial to major sewer systems myself. Some of them can be massive and complex. Regular modern dungeons.

Eh, I was looking for something more specific than just a list of cities. Especially cities that are already the setting for tons of things. Its a bit too broad of a response. Like asking "What kind of environment does this animal live in" and answering with "Earth."

Depends on the type of encounter
What are you planning?

Hong Kong. Kowloon. Seoul. Amsterdam. Rotterdam. Essex. Brighton. Kansas City. Detroit. Las Vegas. The Greater Washington DC Metroplex.

Run them in the town/city you live in and see how long it takes them to try and go to the location you're playing at

My moms basement

Semi-horror exploration with scattered combat.

See . Just saying a city is too vague because unless you get specifics most cities are interchangeable on a basic level.

Swamps. Deserts. Zoos. Farms. Oceans. Savannahs.

How about combine two real cities into a fantasy one? Las Vegas + Mogadishu = Las Vogadishu.

Amsterdetroit. Tourists flock here for quaint urban decay, legal crack bars, and outdoor firing ranges.

The Zoos and Farms are more like what I'm looking for; specific areas or locations or kinds of things...hard to describe. Like a Fishery instead of an ocean or a grain farm instead of a savannah.

Where they are is not gonna be any specific city so I'll already be combining aspects of several places. But mixing dissimilar places could be interesting too, if a bit confusing. Casino warzone, for instance.

Ok, now we both know you're being a fucking retard. Tell me how Hong Kong is the same as New York. The flavor is completely different.

Have you ever been to any major city in a foreign country? They're worlds apart.

Since you want to be spoonfed like a wee baby, we'll go with Monrovia, Liberia. It's shitty, there's civil war on almost a weekly basis, and the entire country is a literal ghetto. Wanna feel post-apoc vibes and ebola?

Or maybe you wanna get cyberpunk? Kowloon Walled City. No laws, high tech, always dark and wet and gross.

Docks. Financial center. Red light district. Theatet district. Immigrant neighborhood. University area. Big public park. Big public square. Big landmark. Airport. Sports stadium. Elf slave market. Hipster central. Museum row. Stock exchange. Nightclub district.

>Semi-horror exploration with scattered combat.
Just look at silent hill, apartment buildings, schools, hospitals, that is the city

depends on the level of urban decay and what your exernals are, what kind of threats face your world? if it's zombies that's one thing, just the elements and other survivors is another, depending on where/how your predator(s) nest/operate determines what places have or haven't been explored, exploited or experienced.

also weather post-event, let's you know what's standing/flooded.

for a start, tunnels covered temporarily by debris could be timecapsules of vehicles, parts, whatever those vehicles hold ( if the apocalypse was was staggered there could be the cannibal remnants of the survivors in the vehicles when the collapse occured) suitcases full of valuable fabrics and non perishable foods (still slightly perished) and whatever technology in the form of way stations, power stations, or tech in vehicles.

you have options but I need specifics

here's a based 100 list of places, this was for my own sake a random faction generator, but it'll serve your purpose well enough.

the Mil. stands for military-, so assume they're those same style of buildings/locale, but a military installation hosted inside of ' x '

I didn't say they were the same except on a basic level, ie they contain many of the same elements because all cities contain many of the same elements. If they're near water they'll have a fishery. They'll have sewer systems, apartments, highrises, places of worship, industrial districts, etc.

An alley way in new york and an alley in hong kong are different in terms of the trash and the neon signs but at they're core they're the same. The point is that you can make a city and, with a bit of tweeking, pass it off as either new york or hong kong so long as you give it that flavor.

I'm talking about the base, before that flavor is added.

Interesting. And also very much what I was looking for.

Can I ask what you're generating?

Rip off that scenario from the second Judge Dredd movie:

Party is on the upper floor of an apartment block under gang control. The gang puts out the word to all the residents and squatters: we want those motherfuckers' heads. It's up to the party to escape in one piece.

Its less realistic than that. It's a dungeon crawl in a modern timespan, more or less. Imagine silent hill's disconnected and surreal sort of "city out of time and space" but with a dense modern city. Like Kowloon or New York.

d100 faction bases, d10 faction alignment, d8 faction population, overtone/theme d8 as well,

I wanted a random faction generator for a post apocalyptic setting I've been working on/through

have to have a stadium with a game going on, but as they watch the game they notice small horrible changes.

-three strikes and you're sacrificed
-vendors selling containers full of insects
-announcer says disheartening things about stuff.

Thats good, thats good.

I have a strip club where its dark, lit only by occasional flashing lights. You can make out the vague forms of women dancing and writhing on poles, but only if you look carefully can you see that they're actually strange hybrids of women and vermin.

you should have a series of enounters where the ground is basically liquid, solid to walk on, but there are waves like the entire building is floating.

bonus for something in the water

at some point it manifests while they're in the over world, where they think they're safe (it strikes)

such folders to be found

flickers of light paint silhouettes of macabre dancers, moving and gyrating to a rhythmless drone, shadows reach in from the edges of the lights with groping hands, some ending in claws, others in exposed bones appendages. they woman appears to be screaming

nothing wrong with the abyss.

>> what abyss

when people die sometimes the traumatic terms of their death cause their soul to cling to the world as it fades, lashing itself to cars, boulders, garbage, other people, the water they drowned in etc.

these items manifest in the massive crevices left from the event that started the end, like the souls dragged whatever was in reach down to hell with them

the old boarding house/ was a fancy school for the children of wealthy aristocracy

an apparition called the headmaster patrols the halls, humming a jaunty wartime some ( Bomber bill, praise the Lord and pass the ammunition etc.) he requests the parties hall pass, hijinks ensues.

forces parties to attend classes with the desicated corpses of previous visitors.

a chittering can be heard from the courtyard in the middle of the grounds, they players are told that lunch will be served in the courtyard

what about the bartender?

they hear a sermon, doesn't sound Christian, closer to pagan, blood and flesh offered in place of love and admiration

New Orleans french quarter is flavorful.

Some S. American cities have people living packed up tighter than a fags poop. If that helps.

Zoo's and Farms?

How about a small settlement of homesteaders set up in the middle of Alaska.
Or a small group of religious nuts set up in the Mojave?

*ring........ring........ring........rrii--*

Nice pic.

Stolen m8. I have a use for that. Thx.

I like that image man, its really neat.

Chernobyl?

Tons can be done with that.

The city has an underground expressway and lots of other covered roads below street level, many of which connect directly to car parks, quite a lot of which are large and dig deeper underground - those elements, the maintenance tunnels that service the, underpasses that connect them and the bridges over them (some of which are also underground) create a big fluorescent-lit warren of concrete and cars that plays hell with reception and your sense of direction.

The city above is pretty nice though.

infinite empty concrete apartments, floor after floor in chernobyl

...

The spookiest place on the planet.

my istant first thoughts on where to set my session would be:

-abandoned house, ghosts, graffitis, a big old unopened safe, the rich people living there used to have snakes so there are dangerous reptiles in the vegetation nearby.couple with local urban legends.
-social encounters with drug sellers or even just counterfeit shoes-sellers. it could be in a dark park, or the bridge under the big roadway, or just a dark alley in the bad quarters.
-the big shopping center. perhaps you have to spy or meet someone but you can't drag attention on yourself with over 700 people shopping there; nice social opportunities.

i think the thread would be really prolific if we could talk about the most desolate places/cool things going on in the streets of our city:

-there is a giantass building next to the motorway. it was supposed to be the biggest hotel in the city to be finished in the 80's for a massive sport event going on in the next city. the event got moved to the other side of the nation so investment failed; the 8 floors hotels has never been finished, it's a massive hollow cube of cement , it's said dark rituals go on at night.
-people who love pimping their car or motorcycle always meet at the local car park near the graveyard and they know everything about the mysteries of the city
-there is a clown picture on the wall of an abandoned house on top of the hill. it is usually seen smiling but if you see him frowning it means you are gonna die in the next days. [insert shitty urban legends of teenagers dying]
-no one talks about it, but everyone knows the massive shipyard, where some of the world's biggest yachts are built, pays next to no taxes for the coastline space it occupies.Rumors are the mayor was once invited to a " private fashion show" going on inside with very few guests. the building is super nice and luxurious because that's where sheikhs are received to bargain the price and size of their next toy, but it's impossible to see anything from the outside.

...

monks of the old ways gather in these areas, cut holes into these metal cylinders and sing ancient chants in them, they reverberate and the echo for miles.

Tardis graveyard?

also them trips

>i think the thread would be really prolific if we could talk about the most desolate places/cool things going on in the streets of our city:
On the mountainside north of the city, where the view is the best, there is two ugly old 50s concrete buildings. They belonged to the university. They are abandoned. You can enter the first building trough a hole in the wall. There's squatters, graffiti and sometimes raves are organized. The second building is closed, nobody knows what's going down there. It was apparently bough by a promoter but he disappeared. Apparently someone with a Geiger counter noticed something next to one of the doors.

A nuclear research reactor is built on a former artillery site. There's more often than not bomb alerts there when they do construction work.

Decayed sport equipment dot the mountains around the city since the Olympic Games 50 years ago. They are meeting points for bands of people.

Due to the city being located in a bowl between 3 mountain ranges, the weather pattern is fucked. In addition, on some summer days, you can't see the mountains on the other side of the city because of the light, heat and smog.

The mayor is hellbent in making the city hard as fuck to navigate by car. There's also apparently wannabe eco-terrorists in the city.

...

Look up Soviet Closed Cities, those are fun if you transplant them to other nations

Steam tunnels under a large, prestigious and historic university.

>i think the thread would be really prolific if we could talk about the most desolate places/cool things going on in the streets of our city:

-flavor note: there's one graffiti artist, or maybe a group of them, who write the word "JERK" in all caps, in various colors and styles, in the quiet, empty places of the city.

-there's a homeless encampment under one of the highway overpasses; they don't approach cars or pedestrians, and they stop talking when people who don't belong there approach.
-on one of the main thoroughfares, between a cupcake shop and a toy store, is a little bar decorated with vintage Playboy centerfolds and hardcore porn playing on the TV screens. There are five different entrances, but only one that customers are allowed to leave through.

Fixed this for slightly easier reading~

I've imagined 40k hive cities being a lot like that, but only in a much bigger scale.

Kind of depends on what your interests are.
>places you're intimately familiar with
>places that have interesting historical or geographic features
>places where you can access historical, drainage, or other special maps
>places with iconic buildings

You've never been to my mother-in-law's house.

Kowloon Walled City

That's awesome.

Urban Horror games like Manhunt, Cry of Fear, or Condemned might be potential sources of inspiration. I don't know exactly how grounded, violent, or horrifying you want it to be, though. I don't know how well it'd translate into a game, but I could talk about some of the vaguely weird shit my roommate and I have run into if you want. I live in a semi-urban area up in a mountainous area, but you can essentially achieve the same effect with large, sparsely populated apartment buildings or old skyscrapers.

>flavor note: there's one graffiti artist, or maybe a group of them, who write the word "JERK" in all caps, in various colors and styles, in the quiet, empty places of the city.
We have two here, one mostly draws sheeps, the other writes "BNT"

I've been to Shanghai and New York. They're not interchangeable, but there's a fuckload of similarities.

This. In the NOLA French quarter alone you have bars, strip clubs, art galleries, parks, churches, a port, a shopping mall, an aquarium, an open-air market, a big police station...all kinds of shit.

Like in normal districts in normal cities ?

>every district in every city has all those things

Ok.

>Kowloon
they demolished that years ago...

So? Game, dog.

Maybe not the port and the aquarium, that would probably be a bit too much.
