Tehnolog makes some pretty good really cheap *not Gundams* too
Ethan Jones
Any thoughts on the Spirit? Is it worth running and if so how should it be used?
Adrian Anderson
If the left arm is lost (and since it's got 11 points of armor on the arms, that's likely), there goes your real ranged armament. Other than that, despite being ugly as sin, it's a decent interdictor with its ECM suite.
Jason Reyes
Eh, the art for it doesn't look that bad but the miniature definitely has some problems. Mainly the weird arm direction and that fuck huge gap between the torso and legs.
Joseph Sanders
The torso is a bizarre mishmash of parts, and it offends me.

IWM quality, ladies and gents. Fuck them, I wish they'd go under. Even with artists from CGL twisting their balls they STILL fuck up; the Gun and the Lu Wei Bing are perfect examples.
Hudson Sanders
Well they just bought Critical Mass Games (at least the Europe Ral Partha branch) so hopefully they'll start transitioning to resin an white metal.
Kayden Adams
>inb4 they turn the critical mass games molds into white metal molds and downgrade the quality.
Jonathan Jones
>Tehnolog makes some pretty good really cheap *not Gundams* too Damn, that basically hits every Syd Mead Gundam note while still getting the original's proportions and RR feel. Good on 'em, Mustache Gundam approves.
The mini comes from that retarded "ultra-flat" era where they were sculpting based on peyote and bad drawings by which I mean "right now". The 'Mech is fragile but fun.
James Stewart
I think Ral Partha Europe and IWM are separate companies. IWM has Ral Partha molds because they bought Ral Partha NA or were part of it that restarted the company, I forget, but like with FASA back in the day, Ral Partha split up when it got sold/died, if I recall. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I remember it. So there's a pretty good chance that it won't affect IWM at all, if I'm remembering right.
Jeremiah Sanchez
Hey fuck you I like the Gun. It's tiny, but cute.
Luis Rodriguez
The sculpt is actually really good except for the massive issue on the backside of the mini. That's what I mean... how do you fuck that up? How do you test cast that and go "yeah, sure, run 'em!" IWM a shit. And yeah, I like the Gun too. I'd have a lance of them if there weren't such glaring errors on the mini.
Nathaniel Brown
You can get them for pretty cheap as well, about $3 a pop here if you type in: Tehnolog Astroids - 8 Space Robots (hard plastic figures), 5-9 Boys, 2014 on ebay. You can probably find other sellers who sell for cheaper if you live near Russia. Their ZOD line is also perfect for Battletech.
They don't really even try to hide they're for Battletech
Colton Richardson
I don't recall seeing any issues with the mini, but I've only seen it once and it was awhile ago at a con, so you may be right. Care to expound on the trouble?
Also, I'd have a lance of them if I played in the Dark Ages and if I did single-comp lances (neither of which I do, outside of Star League 1 play of course).
David Flores
I've heard second hand accounts and seen pics of the mini. All the details on the back are muddled to the point of being gone, and it's all globby and misshapen. It's ugly, and too far gone to fix with some files or an Xacto. I dunno if they managed to fix it, but I haven't looked. Still. People were being sold this garbage, and it's inexcusable.
The only reason I'd have a whole lance is because I really like it and it lets me paint them up in different schemes. I have a lance of Slings for the same reason. Light 'Mechs are my favorite weight class.
Andrew Gutierrez
>the GW demo team is banned because of their conduct
How in the hell does an entire demo team get banned? A couple of people I can see, but simply saying the company in isn't welcome irrespective of whom they send?
What the fuck did they DO?

Confession time anons, buying this Texas class may have been a bad idea. See that maintenance expenses line? Yeah 90 of that 99 million is the WarShip. My profit is literally selling Battle-ROMs of Atleast Itsnot killing Clanners.
Isaiah Edwards
I've been wanting to do a commando unit where everybody's named after Shwartzenegger roles, but I doubt that'd work for you. Can you say a little a more about kinds of things do or don't count as interchangeable and reusable?
Y'all want to continue this? I can respond, but I don't want to if it'll just shit up the thread.
Owen Robinson
Well, it took about five years for the whole company to get on the persona-non-grata train.
So, you know that thing where GW encourages its demo people to be as immature as possible, scream constantly, and attempt to shove other companies out of the demo area? That. There were company neckbeards (red AND blackshirts) disparaging people for their costume/game/army/paint choices, threatening cosplayers with legal action, various retarded shit.
Also, they wanted to be paid. To advertise their game. At a (non-profit) anime convention. Not for us to pay the demo team, of course. Just GW demanding to be sent a wad of cash to send their volunteers out.
So they got told very politely to get fucked.
Currently we have various volunteers and staff running games as we have the time, although there's some other companies interested in showing up and sponsoring the con. It's mostly ND and Privateer stuff in the wargames room, along with the infamous Fairy Meat After Dark anime PVC figure game and the old cripples in the corner playing our animoo robutt games (Heavy Gear/JC, Battletech, and Mekton Tactics almost always get some table time during Free Play). Card games and RPGs get their own rooms, which are also mostly run by volunteers at this point.
Aiden Wood
I don't remember how long ago it was, but on Veeky Forums there used to be thread with image macros similar to the old advice dog memes about GW employees at their stores acting like complete trash. Pretty much everything you described sounds similar to those old pics, except the fact I'm surprised they are so greedy to ask for cash to be there. That's a new level of ass munch I'm not used to hearing.
Dominic Gonzalez
I feel like that discussion was actually on topic, as it discussed the planetary cultures of planets. As long as nobody brings axes to grind I feel it remains a legitimate point. The topic on women actually ended in a reasonable compromise and understanding as well. The thread mainly went downhill when people brought up Soviet Union and numbers as well as that one user who kept poisoning the well in the other discussions by repeating buzzwords[spoilers]

Alrighty. >1 of 2
>The audience can only distinguish two cultures if they're on opposite sides of a conflict I agree that the focus on interstellar power brokers, especially in Stackpole's spine novels, limits how much space can be spent on local color. All the more reason to use cues the audience has an easy time recognizing.
I mean, Lori Kalmar isn't just from the Oberon Confederation, I think she talks about being from Sigurd; McCall is introduced as being from Caledonia, and you have to look at a map to see that's in the Lyran Commonwealth; Hassan Ali Khaled is from Shaul Khala, and again you have to check a map to see that's in the Draconis Combine; and you can tell they're from different cultures from how they're written. The Avanti's Angels and Comacho's Caballeros books go a step further by hanging minor plot points on the characters' different cultures.
Sure, some cultures might be a bit overused. All the more reason to increase variety.

Did you ever read the old StarCraft 1 manual? Concept art, background fluff, and so on. Loved what it had on the Kel-Morian Combine, but guess what? Never mentioned in the actual game. It's just background to help the writers get the right flavor. So it makes no sense to complain about a short, two-word item in the bios as though it's actual, scripted dialogue.
Complaining about the use of 20th Century cultures also makes no sense, because analogue BattleTech does the exact same thing. There's simply too little space to describe the wacky future cultures of a thousand planets; but it's the future, and planetary cultures would of course individuate, so how do the books show that cultures are varied while still making them accessible? They use real world cultures, and set up the history of colonization in a way which supports that.
As to how realistic that is, well, the populations of Japan and westernmost China diverged more than a thousand years ago, but culturally they're still more similar to each other than they are to modern France; India and China have had a thousand years to homogenize on real world Earth, but they're still culturally distinct.
>TL;DR Native Great Grandfather =/= Culturally Similar decendent Swedenese? "Ancestry: Swedish / Japanese." Afro Samurai? "Ancestry: Black / Japanese." Trinity Worlds? "Ancestry: Jewish / Mexican."
The "Greatx10 Grandson" has 2^10 ancestral grandparents, and may be from a multi-cultural world. One assumes the writers are only bothering to note whichever "ancestries" ended up dominating the homogenizing process.
Angel Sullivan

>Did you ever read the old StarCraft 1 manual? user, you're forgetting something important: Blizzard's fluff was good and not intrusive, and their writers were halfway decent at the time. HBS? I have very, very low hopes about their characters, since I'm sure the Iranian woman is going to be a mouthpiece about how she's a good scientist in spite of her gender. Or how the Concordat is suddenly their Shraplen era characterization because the writing staff are lazy. And I hate the TC, but the MoC is no better.

Earth cultures are a bit different though, most worlds are united under a single government and are not in conflict with themselves constantly. For example, even though China and India are right next to each other for most of their history they retained seperate governments and institutions. Trade occured but perceptions of both race and territory still kept the two from homogenizing. Its only in the last few 100 years that travel has become easier and more available to the general populace and even then we have restricted travel and costs to factor in. In the future of battletech, most laws regarding travel are done by the singular governments and Houses, travel is far easier, and none of the perceptions of race exist anymore. You may have also noticed I mention culture but never race. By the time of space travel is being done people are culturally mixed. Race identity no longer hold a very small candle to national identity. An Indian person living in China doesn't identify as Indian but Chinese. The US is actually a perfect modern example in which most people don't identify woth their ancestry but as "Americans". As you said, many of the worlds are very multicultural and it would be asinine for us to assume that the ancestries shown are dominating. If so, then why mention the ancestry at all? Its not as if it affects the character if their ancestors culture is 1 in a 1000 and muddled with countless others before its current incarnation. You've mentioned characters talking about what planet their from, but we have to go and research those planets to find out anything about them. Victor could very well be any number of native European mixes, we jsut dont know. Race =/= culture in battletech and while a culture in a given world may somehow lean more to one Terra culture, the ancestries of the individuals matter very little given the huge overlaping and crisscrossing of identity. Cultural parallels occur all the time, doesn't mean per. ancestry is relevent
Levi Watson
This is actually on topic, as long as its civil I see no problem.
While I understand the concern, conjecture is not an argument. You would need actual game dialoge to validate any points.
Nathan Perry

More massive amounts of memery and the Sailor Scout Death Squad seeking the virginity of all who cross their path. And that one time we screwed up maneuvering and Sakura (Cardcaptor, that is - one of the teams is "All of the Sakuras") managed to kill eleven models with one attack.

Ryan Walker
1/3rd Vindicators. A smattering of Archers, Thuds, Shads, Stalkers, Victors, Warhammers, Marauders, and Strikers. 1/3rd Wasp/Locust/Stinger in that order. Possibly 2-4 Urbies if they are hard up. If they have a training cadre then also a PPC Cicada or two.

Quick question, I know there are rules for finding and using a club but would a mech be able to start a game holding a crude man-made club? If so would there be any added BV?
Connor Williams
Just grab a tree.
Samuel Cook
What if there aren't any? I can imagine some desperate militia fighters fashioning some crude instruments from materials around. I'm assuming it will do the same damage as a tree, but just wondering if there is anything that needs to be added if you start with one.
Luke Flores
>just wondering if there is anything that needs to be added if you start with one. A line in the scenario saying, "you start with an Improvised Melee Weapon". That's about it. For a hatchet or sword, you're paying your tonnage for the better to-hit chances and the durability.
Sebastian Wilson
Uh, I'm not the original poster of that question, but that sounds more like a CCAF unit than an AFFS one. You might want to replace those Bugs with Valkyries and the Shads with Enforcers.
Michael Torres
Haha I saw Capellan and didn't read Capellan March. My bad.
Luis Johnson
Trust me, it wouldn't be as great as you think. She's sagging pretty badly.
Does that version of the Black Knight have that special armor that is resistant to laser fire? That one decent shot only scored half damage.
John Phillips
>Does that version of the Black Knight have that special armor that is resistant to laser fire? That one decent shot only scored half damage. Extreme range halves energy weapon damage because reasons.
Christopher Reed
Extreme range... Hell that should have been my second guess. It's just that to-hit was low enough that the range didn't occur to me.
Hudson Green
Well extreme range + moonless night + a shitload of piloting buffs and a searchlight. Properly it should be about 17 or so.
Dominic Perry
Gentlemen, we live in the age of supermen... supermen that come from tubes....
Charles Perez
It's an IS pilot, not a Clanner.
Jordan Russell
This just gets better and better. What pilot buffs did the pilot have?
Jonathan Miller
Sniper, Weapons Specialist, and Night Fighter ought to just about do it if he's aiming
Brandon Lee
Sniper, so Extreme is now +3 to hit, Laser Gunnery Spec, which is a -1 with lasers, Clan MPLs, which have their own -2, plus Improved Targeting (all), which doesn't affect extreme range, but would be an additional -1 to those bands, plus Accurate Weapon (another -1) and Improved Cooling Jacket on each MPL, meaning it can fire all 8 MPLs without overheating. so the MPLs have a -4 before they get going. You can cheese the absolute FUCK out of pilots with AToW.
I just slap searchlights on everything. Blind Fighter is only great for Dusk/Dawn, since it doesn't reduce the penalty to 1.
David Martin
Quick art question for the artists that visit this general. What could someone get from you if they paid you $500 per pic?
>Sniper, so Extreme is now +3 to hit, Laser Gunnery Spec, which is a -1 with lasers, Clan MPLs, which have their own -2, plus Improved Targeting (all), which doesn't affect extreme range, but would be an additional -1 to those bands, plus Accurate Weapon (another -1) and Improved Cooling Jacket on each MPL, meaning it can fire all 8 MPLs without overheating. so the MPLs have a -4 before they get going. You can cheese the absolute FUCK out of pilots with AToW. Whoa. Does the pilot rip open their shirt before battle and reveal a big S before going into combat? That's a lot of modifiers. Wow.
Jayden Rodriguez
Note that I end up spending about more than a mech is worth in C-Bills in quirk modifications before using the damn thing. Improved Targeting alone with my homebrew rules costs 24 million C-bills, plus further 8 million to buff the MPLs out.
Oliver Jones
>Quick art question for the artists that visit this general. >What could someone get from you if they paid you $500 per pic?
Fully coloured centerpieces with fully coloured backgrounds made to your exact specifications.
Benjamin James
Interesting. How big of a canvas are we talking about?
Camden Campbell
With digital painting, it's as large a resolution as you desire.
Though I recommend asking for resolutions that are supported by modern monitors.
Xavier Hughes
Well I can see alot of the Capellan March units using alot of salvaged Capellan mechs, likewise Draconis March units would use alot of Dragons, Panthers and others captured mechs from Draconis Combine.
Landon Garcia

What Hotaru offers is a new tomorrow....a tomorrow without the Shackles of Democracy or Liberalism. No Communism. A future for the children. Benjamin Taylor
Could this type of work be good enough to be printed and displayed in a picture frame publicly?
Leo Turner
>All the details on the back are muddled to the point of being gone
They generally don't try to sculpt what can't be seen on the art, yes.
Mason Martinez
If the original digital painting is in a large enough resolution and the printer used to transfer it to traditional art form is capable of handling the resolution/ level of detail to make it in the desired size (I'm assuming you want something like an A2 or A1 paper sized canvas) then yes, it could be printed to look extremely proficient.
If you're looking for traditional painting, you're almost better off trying to find a local artist capable enough to handle the commission in a style and quality you want, because shipping a large canvas that survives the trip without suffering damage is highly unlikely in the modern outsourced-to-cheapest-third-world-mongrel-employing-company world. Have had experiences where shipping a carefully rolled up canvas in a reinforced tube with all the markings of "FRAGILE," "HANDLE WITH CARE" etc. did jack diddly shit as the tube and subsequently the canvas had suffered damage because the postal service in the target country had carelessly thrown it about.
Asher Peterson
Cont. from About Capellans. I am playing a merc campaign in AtB and got 3 missons vs Capellans. Want to guess what mech is allways present in most fights and in the end as salvage. I mean I went to the frigging Taurians for work to get away from the flood of Vindicators, got a Security Duty mission on FedCom border, guess who the frigging enemy was? FUCKING CAPELLANS AND NEVER ENDING HORDE OF VINDICATORS.
Joshua Wilson
Enlightening. Thanks a bunch. I had a conversation with some buddies about the pricing of good artwork, BT and otherwise. This opens avenues. Thanks again.
Based on your shipping issues, it might be better to honestly drive / fly to wherever and pick it up by hand. That sounds rough.
John Collins
A traditional painting can be shipped in a heavy duty mailing tube, but you'll need to get a picture frame for it yourself and you'll have to deal with the fact that by the time it arrives, it will curl and that depending on the type of paint used the surface of the canvas might suffer cracks.
If shipping is handled by a more reputable company straight to your front door, like UPS or something, you have a greater chance of receiving the package relatively unharmed.
Even then, I'd suggest you try and find an artist in your country or a neighboring country so as to reduce the distance and time it has to travel.
Jace King
So they make it look like a wad of chewed-up gum instead? Sounds legit.

dear /btg/,
I havn't played legit tabletop BT in about 10-15 years, though I megamek with some interested friends. I want to get back into actual table play but all my books are probably way out of date. Last time I played aa physical game was as far as the City Tech boxed set with mechs, BA, infantry, vehicles and aerial units, rearming, salvage and repair, plus books like maximum tech for advanced tech. Can I safely pick up the newest rulebooks and they'll cover these or is there some revised line around the corner that I should hold out for?
If yes, can I skip Campaign and Strategic Operations and just pick up Total Warfare, Tech Manual and Tactical Operations?
Alexander Garcia
Thank you. This answers a lot.

>Race identity no longer hold a very small candle to national identity. You're overlooking the fact that historically the concept of "race" has not been a fixed concept, and that to some extent the idea of national identity has always had an ethnic component to it. In contemporary America, many people whose ethnic backgrounds were not considered to be part of the "white race" a century ago are now counted as white. Nothing about their ancestry changed; it was the conceptualization of race that changed to meet the needs of nationalism.
But regardless, trying to bring real world logic into Battletech never works, and this holds equally true for social science as it does for hard science. The social aspect of the universe has always been anachronistic and, in true scifi fashion, highly allegorical. Look at how the physics of the universe have always been subservient to the needs of the fiction and the game experience; trying to analyze it outside of that context is all but pointless. The Battletech universe has used the concept of historical earth cultures as analogs from day fucking one; people aren't upset about that fact, they're mad that what was once their cartoonish racialist playground is being turned back on them in a way that no longer supports their assbackwards views about the modern world, and they realize that they're powerless to do anything about it but sit there and watch, crying like a bunch of cucks.
Evan Allen
>people aren't upset about that fact, they're mad that what was once their cartoonish racialist playground is being turned back on them in a way that no longer supports their assbackwards views about the modern world, and they realize that they're powerless to do anything about it but sit there and watch, crying like a bunch of cucks.
Are you sure your not projecting your views on how a few people may think onto the people who are being critical? Not everyone who brings an opposing opinion on something is doing so out of fear or hatred. Sometimes people have a different outlook on things. I dislike having to bring myself up, but I guess I'll come out and say it. I grew up in the USA and am of mixed race. I never really identified racially or really culturally with my parents ethnic backgrounds, one of which is not white. I didn't grow up outside of the country or was involved deeply in any racial group. What I did identify with was being an American and all the things being one meant, at least to me. My culture is the American one and the principles I hold are directly western. You say that perceptions changed because peoples ideas on race changed but from what I've seen and the people I've talked to, race for those around me has become very trivial compared to their identity as Americans. I know its mostly ancedotal, but I thought it might help you understand where I am coming from.
