It is 202 years since the Battle of Tolentino, fought near Tolentino, Kingdom of Naples in what is now Marche, Italy. This was the decisive battle of the Neapolitan War, fought by the Napoleonic King of Naples Joachim Murat to keep the throne after the Congress of Vienna. The battle itself shares many parallels with the Battle of Waterloo. Both occurred during the Hundred Days following Napoleon's return from exile and resulted in a decisive victory for the Seventh Coalition leading to the restoration of a Bourbon king.

In 1808, Marshal Joachim Murat was appointed to the throne of Naples by Napoleon Bonaparte. Ruling from afar as he participated in Napoleon's campaigns, Murat deserted the emperor after the Battle of Leipzig in October 1813. Desperate to save his throne, Murat entered into negotiations with the Austrians and concluded a treaty with them in January 1814. Despite Napoleon's defeat and the treaty with the Austrians, Murat's position became increasingly precarious after the Congress of Vienna convened. This was largely due to increasing support to return the former King Ferdinand IV. With this in mind, Murat elected to support Napoleon upon his return to France in early 1815.

Moving quickly, he raised the Kingdom of Naples' army and declared war on Austria on March 15. Advancing north, he won a series of victories over the Austrians and laid siege to Ferrara. On April 8-9, Murat was beaten at Occhiobello and forced to fall back. Retreating, he ended the siege of Ferrara and reconcentrated his forces at Ancona. Believing the situation to be in hand, the Austrian commander in Italy, Baron Frimont, sent two corps south to finish off Murat.

Led by Generals Frederick Bianchi and Adam Albert von Neipperg the Austrian corps marched towards Ancona, with the former moving through Foligno with the goal of getting in Murat's rear. Sensing the danger, Murat sought to defeat Bianchi and Neipperg separately before they could unify their forces.

Sending a blocking force under General Michele Carascosa to stall Neipperg, Murat took the main body of his army to engage Bianchi near Tolentino. His plan was thwarted on April 29 when a unit of Hungarian hussars captured the town. Recognizing what Murat was trying to accomplish, Bianchi began to delay the battle.

Establishing a strong defensive line anchored on the Tower of San Catervo, Rancia Castle, the Church of Maestà, and Saint Joseph, Bianchi awaited Murat's attack. With time running out, Murat was forced to make to first move on May 2. His force numbered 25,588 men, 4,790 horses and 58 guns; the Austrians had 11,938 men, 1,452 horses and 28 guns.

Opening fire on Bianchi's position with artillery, Murat was achieved a minor element of surprise. Attacking near Sforzacosta, his men briefly captured Bianchi necessitating his rescue by Austrian hussars. Concentrating his army near Pollenza, Murat repeatedly attacked the Austrian positions near Rancia Castle.

The fighting raged throughout the day and did not die out until after midnight. Though his men failed to take and hold the castle, Murat's troops had gotten the better of the day's fight. As the sun rose on May 3, a heavy fog delayed action until around 7:00 AM. Pressing forward, the Neapolitans finally captured the castle and the Cantagallo hills, as well as forced the Austrians back into the Chienti Valley. Seeking to exploit this momentum, Murat pushed forward two divisions on his right flank. Anticipating a counterattack by the Austrian cavalry, these divisions advanced in square formation.

But as they neared the enemy lines, no cavalry emerged and the Austrian infantry unleashed a devastating barrage of musket fire on the Neapolitans, tearing through the massed squares. Beaten, the two divisions began falling back. This setback was made worse by the failure of a supporting attack on the left.

With the battle still undecided, Murat was informed that Carascosa had been defeated at Scapezzano and that Neipperg's corps was approaching. This was compounded by rumors that a Sicilian army was landing in southern Italy. Assessing the situation, Murat began breaking off the action and withdrawing south towards Naples.

In the fighting at Tolentino, Murat lost 1,120 killed, 600 wounded, and 2,400 captured. Worse, the battle effectively ended the Neapolitan army's existence as a cohesive fighting unit. Falling back in disarray, they were unable to stop of the Austrian advance through Italy. With the end in sight, Murat fled to Corsica. Austrian troops entered Naples on May 23 and Ferdinand was restored to the throne. Murat was later executed by the king after attempting an insurrection in Calabria with the goal of retaking the kingdom. The victory at Tolentino cost Bianchi around 700 killed and 100 wounded.

This is an obscure but significant battle that offers something different for the Napoleonic gamer - the "Italian Waterloo". The Neapolitan army is one of the most gorgeous of the period, even if its performance was usually poor.

Care to post any pictures?

The blue/pink combo is common in Neapolitan uniforms - the Guards certainly - and gives them a particularly striking highlight.

Hind & Seek basing convention (for 1/300 scale):

1.5cm X 3cm for infantry squads

1.5cm X 1.5cm for heavy weapon teams

This seems to work pretty well, as a squad is about the same size as a BMP, so can comfortably fit beside it (or behind it)
Hopefully doesn't look too cramped...

...

...

funky fresh! Perry miniatures?

Yeah

...

I wonder how history would have changed if Burgundy had survived, having a decent sized country wedged between Germany and France would've been interesting.

Few Soviets coming together for H&S. 1 more Hind to build and a lot of infantry. Then I'll have a crack at painting these suckers.

The smaller vehicle in the foreground on the right is a BMD - its small because it has to be air dropped.
You can see a BMD getting air dropped by parachute in this video - quite a sight! not sure if this was SOP in Afghanistan though

ugh help me I'm getting interested in travel battle

wargamingmiscellany.blogspot.co.nz/2017/05/travel-battle-campaign-maps-couple-of.html

It's more likely to prod me into building some small geomorphic boards with magnetised bases of risk figures though.

Have the rules been released, or are they still boxed set only?

Does anyone have a pdf/scan of the rulebook and cards for Modern Spearhead? I've looked

Nice minis! As a guy new to historical can I ask what period??

Those are (I think) from Perry Miniatures' Agincourt line, so circa 1415.

These are the 1450-1500 boxes of Perry Miniatures, they aren't mine btw, I have a lot of them but I don't paint as good as this guy.

Perry is cheap as fuck: 20 pound for a box of +-40 infantry and 12 cav. They are good quality and very fun to paint, can recommend.

>+-40 infantry and 12 cav
Should be -+40 inf OR 12 cav

Are there any good sources for middle ages European small unit tactics? I imagine there must have been smaller organization of units than the company, like the the conroi(s).

I know painting advice should go in WIP but anything not warhammer is generally ignored

I started painting a 28mm figure of Kenshin Uesugi. I am not totally sold on the advised colour scheme though.

The head dress is meant to be a worn, off white cloth. The armour is grey and the clothes are a darker grey with a dark red crimson kind of colour on tassles and other trimmings.

Would it be overbearing if i kept the armour grey, but did the clothing in a deep red? I was thinging i could paint the trimmings gold.

i know its not historically accurate... plz dont hate me.

progress so far

The lance is a pretty common small infantry unit (a knight, a light cavalryman and an assortment of footsoldiers)

Advised colour scheme is on the box.

Do you know of any good sources for reading about the tactical use of a lance? I've trained HEMA but it's mostly in the context of dueling because lol Meyer, but I'm interested in small unit combat.

Wasn't that more organisational, not a combat organisation? A knight would have to show up with a lance, but they wouldn't fight as a unit - they'd be split up and put into more homogeneous groups.

They might get into scuffles on the way to the army, of course.

These might be of some use

mediafire.com/file/t387cjc62i1e2f9/Osprey - ELI 185 - European Medieval Tactics (1).pdf
mediafire.com/file/0827v9nhi65ynn9/Osprey - ELI 189 - European Medieval Tactics (2).pdf

Well I should have told you that lances were broken apart mostly, the (mounted) footmen would be organised with other footmen in foot companies and the knight would join the rest of the cav.

I hardly know of any tactics books about the late-medieval period so I can't help you further with that but maybe somebody else will.

Thanks.

If your bases are going to be that small I would recommend getting thinner, plastic bases to try and minimize it.

I would think deep red would not look bad, but it might make the tassels stand out less

Someone asked about Modern Spearhead, but anyone got Great War Spearhead 2? I know it's got an official PDF version available, unlike Modern, but... I'm broke. as usual

>
Can you add Modern Spearhead to the list?

Here, have some context for your Meyer.

Also fence like Pseudo-Doebringer would have you, so you can look in the mirror and not hate yourself.

I'm not really sure there are any. There's very little information to draw upon. Most of what we've got is supposition and extrapolation. It's not like the 1500/1600s when books on how to drill troops to move and fight appeared.

dumping some pics from a Bolt Action game last sunday.

...

this was a bloodbath

hell yeah Panzerfaust

...

Looks good who won and what model 88 is that?

Murat became notorious as he saw the Neapolitan army as a toy rather than a real army

thanks.
It was a draw. My Veteran Grenadier squad was inside a Hanomag with one meagre pin and failed to dismount in the last round of the game to take the last objective. it was hilarious.

the 88 is laser cut MDF provided by a cool guy on the warlord games forums. I only use them (got 2) as terrain or objective pieces.

Nice. That's when "bolt action" happens.

I couldn't tell it was mdf right off the bat. Looks good. Probably a cheap way to get into it.

I bought a division German gun from trenchworx but am having a tough time finding crew that is sold separately.

Looks great, always rare when someone has a completely painted and finished army+opponent+surface+terrain, but it's so worth it when you do.

Yah I agree. One of the reasons I like going to events because you have a better chance of all these things being true.

This. A big sheet of .080 or 0.060 plasticard off amazon, enough for your whole project will be like $12. Just score and snap, it will look much nicer.

Will do user

not sure how historically accurate you want to be
PAK-40 crew

88mm crew
perry-miniatures.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_74_77&products_id=3099&osCsid=voue4jaakvsidk68q7j7dvlcb3

if you need accurate crew for field artillery you are better off buying a gun with crew

I agree normally but no one else as far as I know makes this gun.

trenchworx.com/product/15cm-sfh18-howitzer/

Thanks for the link. Will check. I know perry is usually on the 25mm side but i think this gun would be generally far away from the action.

What is the best game for WWI?

Square Bashing

Because it's the only one I can remember off the top of my head that is actually on a large scale.

There are some good ones around, but without a specific scale in mind I don't really know what to recommend. Here's what we've actually got in our folders:

TFL's Through The Mud And The Blood is a really well developed large skirmish game that has a strong RPG element. The way you develop your character's life before, during and (God willing) after the war is huge fun. It now covers several fronts and forces.

Core rules

mediafire.com/download/v0pvhuiscfmcv45/Mud & Blood - Stout Hearts & Iron Troopers.pdf

Post-war (specifically Freikorps, Irish Civil War and VBCW) supplement
mediafire.com/download/831n3lc84p65tkw/Mud & Blood - Triumphant Standards.pdf

Also all WW1 gamers should read their Play The Game supplement, a collection of articles relevant to fighting the period.
mediafire.com/download/6h72ju77u4sx6t2/Play The Game (TFL).pdf

The next step up would be Chris Peers' Contemptible Little Armies, which tends towards battalion-sized actions. It is more abstract than Mud & Blood but also covers more aspects like detailed artillery rules. This pdf also has the two sets of army lists covering Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
mediafire.com/download/frv8144doeoa6sb/Contemptible Little Armies 3E.pdf

Then there's Over The Top, an old Chadwick/GDW title that is basically a WW1 mod of his classic Command Decision rules. You can field up to a Corps in this! The game's main focus is on command and control, with orders and maneuver being a detailed process. He notes the excessive gaming focus on "Flanders 1917" situations and instead offers obscure scenarios like the Senussi Revolt and the Siege Of Tsingtao.
mediafire.com/download/6y6ombjl4azsm96/Over The Top.pdf

Honorable mentions: Warhammer Historical's Great War wargame, about which I know absolutely nothing.
mediafire.com/download/0c1g36cc1rxhrcu/Warhammer Historical - The Great War.pdf

This ancient WRG set which may have some novelty value.
mediafire.com/download/ta4474bv7ac664o/World War I Wargames Rules.pdf
Landships! in the OP is a very attractive and detailed hex&counter wargame covering tanks on the Western Front, incorporating aircraft and gas and all sorts of other elements.
mediafire.com/download/wnd7jpcdw1qe36d/Landships!.pdf

On a similar note, there are several Strategy & Tactics magazines in the WW1/Games folder covering several aspects of the war.

Naturally there's also the preponderance of WW1 dogfighting games, of which we have two: the venerable Dawn Patrol and the more recent Aces at Dawn

Any idea what games would be really good for this time period?

Large scale, late medieval? You should look at Impetus or DBM.

Hey guys me and a buddy are looking into getting into a world war 3 ruleset. Team Yankee is out because the devs are retarded so I'm looking for an alternative that can still use the nice battlefront minis.

Any of you grognards play ASL? A friend of mine was clearing out some of his old gaming stuff and I have Starter Kit #1 here. I'm watching a battle on YouTube, seems alright, but I'm sorta worried about needing to buy an ass-ton of modules to really enjoy it.

We have a couple of experts hanging around, one of them might pop in shortly
Check out the ASL folder in our OP, or the module on Vassal, it might save you a few purchases

Does anyone know if FFoT or CWC work in 15mm?

What's a good place to buy bases in the US? I'm having trouble locating any.

>Does anyone know if FFoT or CWC work in 15mm?
Yes, both, and using TY/FoW basing if you like.

What kind? The big name laser-cut manufacturer in the UK is litko aero, IIRC.

Bases specifically for Field of Glory
abc(depth) x 40mm(width)

As for material, I'd prefer plastic as I've heard that hardboard soaks paint, but I'll settle for whatever I can get.

Force on Force with Cold War Gone Hot

I´m going for Impetus as well.

I'm having this beautiful dream of starting up a 28mm Hail Caesar army based on the Rome: Total War game. Either Scipio blue or Brutii green.
What do you think?

Victrix just released their new plastic legionaries so now's as good a time as any.

ah, solid suggestion, cheers

>Any of you grognards play ASL?
well now that you mention it...

ASL is NOT a cheap hobby to get into-if you want to jump in feet first. I myself have a club I play with regularly and I havnt brought my kit in months because everyone else has far more stuff than i do

SK1 is a great starting point. some pretty good scenarions in it and gives you a chance to see if you like the game.

as far as getting into it?
at the minimum youll need the 2nd edition rulebook-the big 3 ring binder.($80 new) however they just came out with a pocket version of the rules for about $40. a first edition rulebook will cost less and can work but 2nd edition really expands and clarifies some things.

from there you can download VASL and just play with that. VASL does a pretty good job of having all the maps and countersets available-even alot of the 3rd party stuff thats been done for ASL

if you want to get your own kit then at the minimum youll need the module Beyond Valor-it contains the full german and russian OOBs and all the admin counters. Yanks has the full US army OOB. from there it gets messy and you can go in whatever direction tickles your fancy

but yeah...its not cheap if you want to buy everything

Well going by our three recommendations you have

Has anyone done WW2 imagi-nations? I've been considering making up a pair of hodgepodge axis and allied minor nations located somewhere handwavey, with a mix of modern, lend-lease, looted and obsolete equipment.

The standard pair I've used in earlier periods is a vaguely german force against a vaguely french force - maybe a state somewhere on the border between france and spain and the german one somewhere down by italy? andorra to genoa, maybe. But I'm not actually going to use world maps.

That would make them both coastal, and the french one wouldn't stay unconquered long, but for early and late war stuff it could be interesting.

Any suggestions for ahistorical organisations and interesting tanks/tankettes/bicycle infantry?

this is also not entirely an excuse to have french early war helmets, and interwar leftovers.

I really can't justify brigade's 1914 belgian machine gun carts though. they're pulled by dogs! I mean. maybe. they do ammo carts too. nazis used horses, nothing wrong with dogs in ww2. lots of nations still had ww1 machineguns in inventory, especially minor ones.

The British Vickers was a WW1 gun, the US forces used the M1919 Browning which was similar, the Soviet Maxim was from much older as well...even the Germans used lot of older equipment, mostly for units that wasn't expected to fight, or when there was nothing better, so I'd say go for it.

I always forget about the 40s Hilux.

we did italian-americans once in an ostfront campaign. It was hilarious - Carro armatos and stuarts fighting side by side. Not really much of an imagi-nation though, sorry.

Pretty much everyone had a version of the Vickers 6-ton at the start of WW2, likewise the 37mm and 40mm bofors. perhaps Vickers 6ton turned into a SPG to pack the 40mm bofors?
or 40mm bofors on trucks?
maybe some crazy WWI relics like the Gun Carrier Mk I?

Not every small nation relies on cast-offs. Some invest heavily in their military, and would be all about the fancy high-tech stuff.

By which I mean a (small) fully mechanised force with 38L APCs, light tanks, and these adorable babby tank destroyers.

Is there a specific thread for hex & chit board wargame scans?

Obviously the Not-Germans would field early imported Italian and Japanese armour. For testing purposes, yes. Bring a few across and hand them off to a minor nation.

Any excuse to get Japanese armour on the western front is a good excuse.

>specific thread for hex & chit board wargame scans?
You mean, a folder for hex & chit board wargame scans? Because we have a couple.

Today I have started to slowly scan, page by page, a borrowed Classified: Special Operations Missions 1940-2010 supplement of Force on Force on a borrowed scanner.

thank mr scantal

FiveCore Brigade Commander and maybe FiveCore Company Commander. I've never played Company Commander or read the rules but Brigade Commander is great.

How is the quality of that gun? I'm tempted to order it for quite some time.

Extremely highly detailed and easy to build. I'll upload a picture of mine built before painting this afternoon.

I have a bunch if kits from the and they are all great. Some ija stuff and a little bit of Soviet and German.

Damn.. now i have to spend some money. Especially after the disappointment of Warlords metal 10,5 howitzer.

Looking forward to your pic.

>Peru had spent several years and large sums of money to prepare for war with Ecuador, and had the continent's most modern armed forces when war broke out in August 1941. Italian artillery and bombers, Czech tanks and artillery tractors, American fighter planes and French cannon all made for a war machine capable of overrunning Ecuador's comparatively primitive bayonet army.

those are beautifull miniatures! impressive work

Not mine, sorry if I made it look like that

I might be blind but I can't see a really obvious difference between Redcoats of the Jacobite Rebellion and the American Rebellion, even to there was 30 years between them - can I get away using Jacobite Rebellion Redcoats and Highlanders for the American war of independence? In 1:72 the RedBox kits are much easier to source than any other redcoats for the period,
