To be fair, in Japan you're also forced to be part of a community. You're forced to go on company holidays and drinking nights with your coworkers (who are often your friends from way back in high school or college), meaning they have on average way more friends than the average American.

I've got a few (namely, two - and one of them is my father) truly close friends I can trust with my life, a couple people I can trust with most of my problems (like five or six, maybe ten at most), and then there are all the other people I just have fun talking with.

I get the logic of "I don't want to be a burden" (mainly because I was such a person myself and considered suicide when I was in an emotionally edgy phase), but the thing is, if you truly feel like you are being a burden, you don't fucking kill yourself - instead you try to alleviate the burden by helping the people around you that you feel close to.
And at some point, when you succeed at alleviating the burden, you simply stop feeling useless, because at some point the people close to you start feeling grateful of you helping them.
