MtG

Wizards of the Coasts decides to make a MtG anime and puts you in charge of character design.

It is your job to come up with a stereotypical player for each color, two-color combination and three-color combination, that embodies their attitudes and typical styles of play.

Remember, it must be anime as fuck but it also must be representative of MtG.

Everyone is fat and obnoxious.

Do you want the fun roster or the predictible one? The predictible one is just:

-Red: Free-spirited hero who doesn't care what others think about him and use ">muh inner strenght" to beat the bad guys.

- Black: Edgy shounen teenager nerd with glasses. He believes he is dark and mysterious, like Sephiroth.

- White: Knightly waifu material. She is the alaround romantic interest of the main character.

- Blue: Calm shonnen samurai with lots of wisdom. Actually, for anime standards, blue and black would be almost equal: a idealised japanese nerd. So, let's change a little the stereotype.

- Green: Moe token loli who loves nature/comes from innawoods. Bonus point for animal ears and cat tail.

>a stereotypical player

I'm out. If I'm making an MtG anime, I want it to be set in-universe.

it'd be like Super Duper Sumos but with magic

>fat
Made by the Japanese, for the Japanese. So no fat people (except for the rapist/joke character), and in my experience most Japanese players are that underweight creeper type rather than the landwhale type.
>obnoxious
Obviously. If you're going to make a show about Magic players, it won't be entertaining unless you play it up Yugioh style, or make it Always Sunny but with children's card games.

>love interest not in the ally colors

>Not wanting a tsundere white planeswalker who is like "it is not like we aren't allied colours or anything, b-baka"

Do magical girls that can GATTAI! to make various color combinations. That way you only need five base characters.

Red is a captain of a sports team, probably either baseball or track or maybe kendo. She's impulsive and quick to fight, but also quick to make new friends. She's kinda dumb, but earnest.

White is either a student council president or a class rep. She's childhood friends with Blue, and she's the nominal team leader. Very concerned with rules and school performance.

Blue is a shy nerd. Maybe the treasurer of the student council or just a member of the mahjong club. She'd be top of the class, but she has terrible attendance due to cutting to pursue her own academic interests.

Black is a delinquent. Like blue, she does well on tests when she shows up and tries. The first arc would deal with Red and Blue befriending her enough for her to GATTAI! with them to fight evil.

Green is the genki oppai type and a member of the gardening club.

In terms of characterization, I'd focus more on what each girl lacks from her enemy colors. So Blue is kinda timid (no red) and aloof and/or sickly (no green), Red is kinda dim (no blue) and reckless (no white), etc.

just isekai it up
I thought I lived an ordinary life, but this girl is actually a Planeswalker?!

> A group of people from different part of a plane must unite against a mysterious and extremely powerful wizard.
> He's actually a planewalker, the heroes must take down a planewalker.

>Moe token loli
>not white
She could have an angel deck and a bunch of lifegain and stupid shit like that

>moe token loli
>not black for maximum dissonance
>with a zombie token deck for maximum english punnage

Angels are literally the worst.

No, fuck that. In-universe or nothing. It would probably work better as a western cartoon, too.

The show is primarily about five original characters, each one from a different plane who all have their Sparks awakened at the same time and are all transported to the same plane, leading them to all meet eachother with no idea of what really happened. They become friends, and start traveling together, often getting involved in conflicts in the planes they visit (but unlike the Gatewatch the conflicts they get involved with are never world-ending catastrophes, so the scale of the story is smaller). Each one of the main group would be one of the main colors, but they would expand into others as they grow as individuals. Various characters from the game would be part of the supporting cast.

Story would be mostly arc-based, with each arc contributing to advance a main plot, and a few one-off episodes. Most of them would be about the main characters, but some arcs and single episodes would be focused on supporting and minor characters.

Let's make things interesting:
>Izzet
While he may appear to be calm and patient, he actually likes getting things done quickly, which is why he is such a hard worker. Izzet likes to get things out of the way before moving on, which makes interruptions a big pet peeve of his. Prefers to finish tasks in one fell swoop.
Plays UR Storm.

>Naya
Seeing everything as a competition, Naya likes to rush ahead and get the ball rolling. She is kind of a pusher, but she is far from a control freak. Has a problem with ignoring things that may get in her way, instead choosing to focus on her goal rather than the process. She is athletic.
Plays Naya Zoo.

>Boros
Boros is friendly but proactive. She is close with her friends, but she is nice to everyone. Well, almost everyone since she can be pretty livid against bullies and other people she perceives as bad. She is surprisingly patient despite her disdain for mean people. She won't take matters into her own hands unless she feels it's necessary, but being a white knight, this isn't uncommon. She prefers to prevent the problem if able.
Plays Sun & Moon.

>Dimir
Dimir looks creepy and suspicious. He doesn't talk much, but he is responsive. In truth, he actually likes company, he just prefers it to be with few at once instead of many. He wants to get to know people, but is too shy because he is aware of how autistic he acts. He is quite introspective and is pretty smart in figuring out how things and people work, but he is an underachiever with little passion for things.
Plays Mill.

How do we make the protagonist interesting and not shit? Most isekai have shit cookie-cutter protagonists.
Also MtG wouldn't quite be an isekai since the main character is likely a planeswalker that can leave, unless he or she went through some Ob Nixilis bullshit.

>t. Liliana

>Red
Main character, stereotypical friendly fights for his friends doesn't study likes to eat a lot. Plays a goblin deck with a bunch of dragons.
>Blue
Main character's best friend, cool and calculating type. Wears glasses which he readjusts every time the enemy casts a counterspell. Flyers, bounce spells and counterspells.
>Green
The fat kid best friend, as usual he has no personality other than being the fat kid. Large ramp and big creatures.
>Black
Anti-hero, starts out as a selfish douche but eventually becomes a secondary protagonist. Mainly has demons, horrors and cards that cause the caster to pay life. He plays tournaments and is a local legend.
>White
Token girl who plays angels and lifegain. No personality.

>White/Blue
Pettanko class president, plays a control deck with detention sphere, ensnaring bridge and stuff like that
>Red/Black
Main character's dark personality. Sometimes comes out when he's in trouble, he'll suddenly play a dual land or swamp and bam he's in dark mode
>White/Green
Love interest, plays a token deck
>White/Black
Creepy loli from the neighbourhood with a lot of lifesteal shit
>White/Red
Friendly neighbourhood cop who takes the game really seriously, plays a legendary white/red humans deck
>Blue/Green
Mad professor, is the villain of the first arc. Is trying to breed the perfect MTG player through nefarious means. Plays a massive ramp deck with stupid shit like sphinxes
>Blue/Red
Blue kid's older, more badass brother. Plays at a national level with a b/r delver deck
>Blue/Black
Friendly guy who everybody likes who turns out to be really means in mtg duels. Plays mill

>Green/black
Megalomaniac politician, is trying to revive a MTG duel legend. Villain of the third arc (second one is a tournament arc with no real villain). Plays a reanimator/undying deck
>Red/Green
Quiet girl who is just very shy in public but is actually quite wild inside. Has one of those explosive decks with a lot of combat tricks to set up 3 turn kills.
>Green/blue/white
Local card shop owner
>Green/black/white
Local card shop owner when he has to get serious
>Black/red/white
The champion
>Green/red/blue
The number 2, who is female
>Blue/red/white
Main character's father who has passed away in a duel-accident

Fuck I'm running out of ideas for the 3-color combinations

>Planeswalker
>Not some old Phyrexian commander

The villain isn't important or known to the audience at first. The first arc is simply about the life of the heroes and their adventures. Fun, impressive, and /comfy/ as hell.
One of the heroes is actually a planeswalker who wants to take down the evil planeswalker.

And, now, let's try the funny way. Pissing on colour stereotypes, but being faithful to them.

***MONO COLOR***

- Red: An easy-going but excentric artist and a free thinker from Ravnica. When the multiverse opened to feed his expansive creative mind with unfanthonable worlds, ideologies, sensations and discoveries, he forsaken its lazy and easy life in order to catch the beauty of the Multiverse. Able to inspire a wide arrange of feels (love, hate, fear, valor, heroism,...) to the people around him, he still lacks of something even the beauty of the Multiverse hasn't given yet to him. Eventhought he can inspire all those ideas to the people, his hearth lays cold, devoid or a purpose. A real purpose which would ignite the extinguished fire of his apatical heart. A purpose to paint, sing, write and die for.

- White: A too ordinary and good for notthing person from a plane too insignificant to even be remembered. He is not good at magic or at combat. He shouldn't be here. In fact, he didn't even wanted the Spark for begin with. He doesn't feel a hero, just an ordinary farmer who happened to have the spark and is lost. He feels the terror and frustration of being placed in front of the ominous shadow of the darkness who threathens to destroy everything. And, what could he do against that?

He doesn't know yet, but he is the greatest of heroes. Firstly because, if it wasn't for him, the party wouldn't even have sticked together. And, the most, because the most heroic acts can only be found in the smallest of persons.

- Blue: Enigmatic and beautiful, she hailed from Bant. The deepness of her azure eyes, able to scry the future in strange ways, predicted about a great cataclysm to take place. Now she is planeswalking away, looking for the long forgotten legend of the knight who vanquished an interplanar demon who possessed his own brother. She looks at you with a distantly, with sleepy eyes like staring more than you are, just to smile warmly in a motherly way. Her mind looks like it has a feet in this realm and, at the same time, in another. Ever caring for the group, it looks like she talks about nosenses or to invisible people. She identifies herself as a guide, a mere mentor and protector for what it is yet unknown. What nobody knows is that she is who feels the most lost. Prisoned in the ethereal realm of her own mind.

- Black: Sometimes, we doesn't realise what we really value the most until we have lost it. Exiled from his own home plane in Bant, fleeing from the shadow of his past. Fate has already spoken to him with cruelest words anybody could imagine. The blame was his, but the punishment was for his brother. His brother had the Spark. A gift he desired most than anything in the Multiverse. In his jealousness, the fool lord orquestacted the corruption and downfall of his beloved brother in order to, in the end, vanquish himself such evil and get the Spark he always wished for.. Old songs tells the tale of the hero who saved the land from the shadow of his diabolical brother. But nobody knows the sadness and sorrow that flooded in the hero hearth as his evil and corrupted brother gave to him his spark so he could do a better use of that gift. Unaware of the real hand behind of his downfall.

- Green: Some people thinks that Fate moves its hand in order to preserve the balance of the Multiverse. She thinks, however, it was just mere luck. Once an elf born as a Phyrexian slave, still wearing the stains of its corruption tainted on her flesh, she would have become a mindless mechanical slave if it weren't because her Spark ignited. Lost in an unknown plane, she could see the oozing cancer she meant for everything. She could see in the vastness of infinite possibilities how what is was sacred and pure, remained tainted by Phyrexian reach. The Multiverse moaned in agony as the dark ooze corrupted all that was untouched. In the end, she understood the Multiverse was unbalance, at best.

Naive, blunt and a little clumsy, she never had more than the body and the mind of what they would want for a slave. But, in order to save her people. To cleanse the Multiverse, she should discover her true origin. A task which will put in a test to her friends and her new skills.

Make an anime about shitty planeswalkers on par with Konosuba, but make them develop over time both in terms of power and personality with the final part being a grand final assault/stand against the grand antagonist. Throw in some heartwarming and triumphant stuff here and there, but pack most of the stuff in between with comical errors or dumb luck.

Have the blue mage be overspecialized in countermagic, for example, but eventually develop powers involving scrying, aether-manipulation, and even snapcasting. Maybe even delve into another color.

> When they finally take him down, they somehow inherit a shard of his spark each.
> They need to be together to planeswalk.
> "By our power combined...
Explain why they can't always fuck off from any threat.

>W/B
>Creepy loli from the neighbourhood with a lot of lifesteal shit
I WILL FUND THIS

>>White/Red
>Friendly neighbourhood cop who takes the game really seriously, plays a legendary white/red humans deck
I don't know how to react to this beyond anything except astonishment in how accurate it is.

>White
Pure of heart waifu, believes in bringing peace, wants everyone to be friends, sees the good in everyone.
Quote: "All this fighting . . . What is it for?"

>Red
Spunky, scrawny, has something to prove. His character development basically consists of him unlocking his inner power for big, devastating attacks. Essentially a Shonen Jump protagonist.
Quote: "Someday I'm gonna be the best fighter you ever saw, believe it!"

>Green
Not!Samoan. Big dude, like twice as tall as White or Red. Is fat-buff, but incredibly chill. Started off as an early enemy but befriended them after they defeated him. Has an obsession with being strong. Eats a fuckton.
Quote: "I'm gonna make you big and strong like me, brother!"

>Blue
Has glasses, makes points by pushing them up with his/her middle finger. Deeply derebral, often fails because of the protagonists' dumb luck/sheer willpower. Red's rival and a minor villain for the early show, he/she gets blown out by Black midseason.
Quote: "I-Impossible! No one could beat my trap!"

>Black
Edgelord fuckhead and smirking villain. Male, older, probably androgynous. Has some vague evil plan that involves destroying all life on Earth for reasons.
Quote: "My my, you little pests are quite tenacious."

I had an idea to anthropomorphise the colors as animu girls before.

White: loli class president. Believes in justice, order, and decency. A great leader, and oddly good with weapons (bamboo sword, giant fan, etc.), but if you catch her alone she's much less intimidating. Backpack had angel wings. Green behaves so she likes her, and even goes to her for advice when no one is looking since she acts so matronly. Gets along with Blue because they study together, even if she doesn't like her attitude. Red and Black are trouble, and constantly need to be watched; they're a bad influence on the other students.

Blue: popular girl who's kind of a bully and totally a sore loser. Great with new tech and social media, rich and privileged with the best toys and grades. Too cool to be in the computer club but secretly runs the schools websites. Is haughty until you win an argument, in which case she's a fucking mess to be around and resorts to insults. White leaves her alone as long as she doesn't bitch at someone in class. Black gets her whatever her daddy can't, and doesn't respond to her teasing so she's given up trying. Red is a spaz, and Green is so far behind the times it's not even funny. She doesn't mess to much with either of them though; being around Red means getting hurt "accidentally" and Green has those "I'll break your arm," eyes whenever they talk.

Black: creepy loaner/delinquent that eats too much (big and curvy under her clothes, has no self control (insults or alienates potential friends), and knows the seedier parts of the net. Good at most things, like school and sports and socializing, but too lazy and brash to do anything well most of the time. White is annoying, always telling her to show up to class and wear the uniform properly. Green is a suckup; either of them know how to have fun. Red is good for a laugh, even if she isn't reliable. Blue is more reliable and a decent friend (when Black wants a friend), but a know-it-all.

Red: athletic tomboy genki girl. Bursts of energy, unfocused, shit grades not because she's dumb but because she can't study. Gets along with Black because Black likes her eagerness to do whatever, and goes along with her mischief. Green likes her honest and straightforward attitude, as well as her outdoorsiness; they go for runs and climbs all the time. Always buys the best new tech like Blue, but is reckless and breaks/loses it all the time. White used big words that go in one ear and out the other, but she's REALLY trying to listen and understand.

Green: kimono wearing, slow speaking, curvy but coy hime-cut. Biggest assets of all the girls, and oddly strong for her build (her family owns a dojo with a hundred's year old style). Doesn't participate in sports, but everyone who's been on the wrong side of a physical contest with Green has seen that "you've already lost" look in her eyes. Loves nature, greenery, going for walks, gardening, and cooking. Still has a brick phone (that she keeps at home) and couldn't figure out a smart phone if her life depended on it. She doesn't care for Blue or Black: Blue tends to boast and lie and Green's not about that, while she's convinced Bladk steals her food and steps on the school flowers. Red is a great friend with similar interests, and White understands the value of simple things like kindness and cooperation (and is soooo much smaller than her she's not intimidated by White at all).

>Green/Blue
Curvaceous woman with glasses and a hibiscus or lily in her hair. Runs a beachside resort where the protagonists find themselves for an episode. Very knowledgeable about the sea. Has a caring, maternal aspect that belies hidden pain.
Quote: "There was a legend once, of a boy like you who stood against the waves . . ."

>Red/Blue
Mad tinkerer side character. Gets excited by books and tools. Has more enthusiasm than skill. Most of her inventions blow up in her face.
Quote: "Once my invention is active, we will have enough energy to power the village for a year! And now, to switch it on! Eh? Wait, it's not supposed to-" *boom*

>Red/Black
Red's edgy older brother, who abandoned the family a long time ago. He serves as the snarling right hand of the cool, placid Black. Torn between his love of his little brother and his loyalty to Black.
Quote: "Stop fighting Red! Can't you see you've lost! If you won't submit . . . I'll kill you myself!"

>White/Green
White's long-suffering father, seen during the episode where the protagonists travel to White's hometown. Local healer who has cared for White and her sister since their mother passed away. Slightly overprotective of White's little sister. Taught White everything she knows about the healing arts.
Quote: "Every living thing deserves kindness."

>White/Red
White's younger sister. Hotheaded, bratty, fiercely independent. Angry at what she perceives to be weakness or lack of courage from ther sister and father. Sets out to take care of a minor problem, gets herself into trouble that the protagonists rescue her from. Ends the episode by chastising Red to marry her sister while everyone else laughs.
Quote: "Ever since mom died you've treated me like a child!"

>Pettanko class pres.
>Loli class pres.

While I commend your excellent taste, class presidents typically have a normal body type (as far as anime is concerned). So average height, B-C cup breasts.

>Blue/Black
Corrupted rival Blue. After her defeat by Black she is infused with his evil energy. Her traps and strategies become more sadistic. After White is kidnapped by Black she is the first villain Red and Green encounter in the final stretch of the series.
Quote: "This power . . . All this unlimited potential . . . Aha . . . Ahahahaha!"

>White/Blue
Redeemed rival Blue. When Blue/Black is defeated by Red and Green she chooses to purge the Black energy from herself and in the process gains a bit of White's defensive powers. She joins Red and Green as they storm Black's fortress. While Red goes on to face Black, she and Green will play defense against Black's hordes.
Quote: "Red . . . Forgive me . . . I wasn't strong enough to resist it . . . Please, let me make amends."

>Green/Black
Black's massive pet dragon. A shambling creature of monstrous size and unholy power.

>Green/White/Black
Black's dead wife. Once a source of positive energy, she was corrupted by the darkness. Black has given himself over to the darkness to try and rescue her from death.

>White/Black
Corrupted protagonist White. After White was captured by Black he infused her with dark energies to try and revive his dead wife. The experiment succeeded, beyond Black's wildest hopes. She radiates pure destructive energy, trapped within a bubble of searing light. Rescued by Red using the power of friendship or love or some other bullshit.
Quote: "The darkness . . . It's tearing me apart! Red! Save me!"

Truth, but I liked the white weenie as a character. Same reason green and gruul are so often defined as having bit tits.

I'll just leave this here

Fucking dammit tg why do you make me want things I can never have

To show you the futility of desire and the cycle of suffering it brings you

my dude

>stereotypical
>only one of each type but they literally all need representation
What if I want to do a good job?

You just make them a character and not a self-insert, add a dose of how most of the other main characters are planeswalkers so the protag doesn't have that SUPER SPECIAL RL KNOWLEDGE advantage (or isn't the sole possessor), and make it more adventure less harem. Maybe if they bounce between multiple worlds, because that just makes sense in MTG.

SUPER SPECIAL RL KNOWLEDGE would likely not be very relevant unless said main character in his/her homeplane learned about certain things that are universal, such as mana, colors, leylines, and DON'T TOUCH THE DARK OIL.
Another thing to take into account is that the Gatewatch exists. Learn from that, especially if you hate it.
