Daily reminder that, if you don't allow electronic dice rollers at your table, you are a oppressive shitlord because how dare you expect a player to spend 2 bucks on a set of dice.
Daily reminder that, if you don't allow electronic dice rollers at your table...

Electronic dice roller is also a fair bit faster and more convenient, even doing all the math for you. It can speed up gameplay significantly if your system of choice involves a whole lot of number crunching.
If I ever run into a game that permits or even encourages virtual dice, I'm writing my own app that comes with a backdoor.
/thread
I don't care what my players use.
Hell, I use physical and electronic - electronic for rolling large amounts of dice at once, physical for everything else.
>but what if they cheat
If they wanted to cheat then they can do that regardless of whether they're using electronic or physical dice.
If they feel the need to cheat at a cooperative game then I think they might need help though.
So long as I get to see the roll and the result, I really couldn't care less. Roll with whatever is convenient to you.
Electronic dicerollers aren't random. They can't be without special designs, such as random.org's wind current based rolls. If it's not tapped into a truly random element of the world, no program can create truly random numbers.
Dice or nothing.
Senpai, we play on roll20.
What do you want us to do? Record our dice rolls?
Real dice aren't random too.
Pseudo random numbers are fine unless you're a retard
Ugh, cheap aliexpress dice. Gross, just spend seven on a Chessex set from you local Barnes & Noble or FLGS. Jeez.
I've seen that asked.
>drives people away
Who was going to play in a game of D&D and then discovered that they would need to roll dice and decided to not play instead?
>Electronic dicerollers aren't random.
Neither are actual dice.
Get a webcam and point at your rolls, duh.
Are you saying your GM doesn't have a massive bag of dice to lend to players who don't have their own?
If I ever run into a game that permits or even encourages physical dice, I'm using my own dice that comes with a lead weight
Have fun now that your players have an excuse to have their smartphone at the table at all times.
It's also possible that they encounter someone like OP who responds to even the smallest complaint they make about anything by taking it as proof that they're the political devil and proceeding to be even more obnoxious out of self-righteous spite.
And he probably accused them of "shoving their politics everywhere" at some point while he did it.
>there are people out there RIGHT NOW who let their players use phones at the table
With time stamps and shoe on head
They FEEL more random, and that's all that matters.
>Feelings matter more than facts
You are the cancer
Facts haven't mattered for years, user. Our entire system of life is now based on feelings.
>Veeky Forums is apparently infested with luddite faggots
Fuck you, I'm the GM and I use apps, deal with it or get out
Fuck you
Have them disable internet on their phone or refuse to give them a wifi password.
Beyond that, you have to ask yourself whether or not they're looking at their wall because they have a short attention span or if you're just not providing anything that keeps them engaged to your plot.
Or I'm a generous DM who has a big bag of dice I let my players use, and don't give a fuck about dice rollers because I'm too busy setting up the next encounter.
>Allowing something that can easily programmable
Did once, after the dude didn't stop rolling 16+ for 5 hours never again
If you don't have dice, don't worry you can borrow mine
He's right though.
There's no such thing as randomness, we just can't predict the results of a die roll because we don't know all the physical variables and can't extrapolate a result from them.
Once you start talking about randomness, you're talking about feelings; "I, personally, don't know what the result will be so it's random!"
Do you literally search out for trivial shit to get enraged by OP? Every day, on the internet? How long do you spend each day doing it? How is it working out for you, life-wise?
The problem with arguing about feelings is that feelings can have nothing to do with empirical data. Anyone can FEEL anything but given that we tend to jump the gun and recoil in disgust at even the hint of bad vibes, people just feel a thing and then disassociate themselves from that thing even if their feelings are incorrect due to a lack of information.
When you allow feelings to supplant empirical data, you end with groups like the flat-earthers, tumblrinas, and anti-vaxxers who are pure Id with little to no (Super) Ego to guide their actions.
If your game's not interesting enough to keep them away from the internet, that's on you.
This exactly. When I'm running a game, if a player doesn't have their own dice, I have a pile of loaner dice they can use.
Electronic rollers are too easy to tamper with and not leave visible signs.
>I can't maintain the group's attention span unless all eyes are on me.
I'm sorry you're too spineless to actually manage a table or entertaining enough to maintain the group's attention. We're not all meant to be good GM's unfortunately and smartphones or no, your players will just get distracted by something else.
>inb4 buttmad reply of wall text talking about how many campaigns you totally ran that were totally fun for everyone involved.
The "Crit Dice" app gives you a history tab if you really want to make sure that the player actually rolled three NAT 20's in a row.
I'm sure there're more out there that allow the same function but that's the one that I personally use and have the most experience in.
>Electronic rollers are too easy to tamper with and not leave visible signs.
So are dice.
Don't tell me you can tell from a glance if someone microwaved his d6.
If you really don't trust your players just mandate everyone uses the same roller app that you checked beforehand; same as if you loaned your own dice.
gw assauld dice are close, using simulated physical dice and a physics engine.
That's a very popular strawman among people who hate the fact that other people's feelings exist..
They however tend to be more fairly distributed than physical dice.
And predicting future rolls because it is only pseudorandom? That is very much so a difficult thing. (depending on the algorithm used)
This
Also, I hate electronic dice rollers, but if someone else wants to use them for their rolls, who the fuck am I to say no? Or maybe dice of unpleasant colours should be banned too.
If you are afraid that your players cheat, talk to them or get better players. And anyone complaining about the difference in randomness between electronic and physical dice doesn't understand what they are talking about.
A microwaved d6 will not give the owner as reliably biased rolls as a tampered electronic roller. I can re-write the code for an electronic roller so that it gives me exactly the numbers I want, depending on how I activate it, and can do it in a way that doesn't show up to the people watching. Microwaved dice will just have a bias to one side, and even then aren't a guarantee.
So yeah, I can tell at a glance that those microwaved, slightly melted dice are always going to be biased to the same numbers. You can not tell at a glance that my hacked roller is giving me exactly the numbers I'm telling it to.
I give so little of a shit about what dice people use if someone wanted to use an electronic roller that would be fine provided it was clear.
Or, you know, I'd fucking lend them some dice
fine, I'll use my GMing dice, they have 2 sixes on
low energy alternative news! very sad!
What does Satan meant by this? I can code a perfectly random dice in 5 minutes.
>you are a oppressive shitlord
am I supposed to be bothered by this label?
joke's on you, i only allow translucent dice.
t. The Cancer itself
Just kill yourself
Very true.
Funny thing, the base random number generation algorithm in computers is predictable - if given the same seed, it will produce the same set of numbers. If instead, you give it the current clock time (which is measured in miliseconds since January 1st 1970), the numbers will be just as random as any physical die.
In unix, /dev/random and /dev/urandom are seeded based on things like timing between keypresses, and static coming in from any and all available devices on your computer. Wiggle your mouse - you've just altered the random number sequence, and made it no longer predictable.
That said, I still prefer real dice in my games, and hand out loaner dice to players who don't have their own. Sometimes I even hand them messed up dice just for laughs. (This d20 hasn't rolled above a 9 in the last half hour... wait a minute... zero? HEY!)
Awesome, so restrict the app then?
If you are that good, make your own and just have everyone in the group use it.
I'll never understand how people who are so shit at trusting others could ever have a group to play with but w/e.
.............................you could just roll in the corner and lie too.
Or just tell the gm you can't stand losing
then just say "oh wow another 20!" every time you habe to roll
even if it's not d&d
It's a hell of a lot less work to reach into my bag of a hundred dice and hand them some than to try and get everyone to reach the tablet to roll their dice there.
I tried it once, it was awkward and annoying, and we all went back to real dice afterwards.
Hmmm. Takes the fun away...
I mean have everyone in the group download and use their app on their own thing, not everyone literally use your tablet.
At that point, yes, just handing out dice is better I guess.
The whole point of it is to roll where everyone else can see it. Yeah, I could probably write a network app with a server that does the rolling and displays the... dammit, I've already got ten other game related coding projects on the go, you just had to add another one, didn't you?
This is like saying that you're the GM and you are a fervent believer in the immortal science of the Communist Party, deal with it or get out. By the time you finish the sentence people will be trampling each other underfoot to escape your living room, the ending is redundant.
Yeah I'm sure you don't give a shit about what your wife does too.
I bet you would lend your wife too. Cuck.
You could just use roll 20, or a chat app with a roll function or something.
>Neither are actual dice.
This.
One game I played, there was a player that we eventually had to do his rolls for him, because he would spend almost ten seconds lining up the d20 in the palm of his hand, then roll in the exact same way every time.
He would get either a 19 or a 20 about half the time.
Even fair dice aren't even remotely random.
>my feelings are valid just because they exist
You're not special. You do not matter.
That adds layers of complexity to the player's lives, which will result in "why don't we just use real dice? We've all got dice anyways".
My way only adds extra work to me, and I've got three weeks of vacation time that I'm getting yelled at for not taking, so I need _something_ to do with it. Just needs a web gui for the players, everyone's got a web browser on their phones anymore.
I'll probably post a link to the finished product some time in early august, and I'm going to blame you guys for it's existence.
>Playing with people for whom this would be a problem
>for years
Facts haven't mattered since humanity took its first trembling steps. They've always just been things to trot out to try and prove your feelings are valid.
>omg there's other people in the world
>better post some shitheel may may
You sure got them bro, I'm sure you're the baddest dude ever
No, he looks at trivial shit for one of us to get enraged by, or at least to get enraged by the fact that he posted it expecting us to get enraged by it.
>rolling physical dice
>utterly inconsequential
Fucking niggers today, I swear to God. The whole point is you sit down at a table with some friends and some dice.
You know... with all this talk of tampering with the app/program...
It might actually be better that the pseudorandom algorithm can be predicted given the same seed. You could use that so that the GM or other players can verify your rolls.
Only thing I miss in that, is that it could also potentially allow it to see future rolls... Though I don't think that is necessarily an unsurpassable problem.
Have fun with your flawed chink dice, I only allow casino die at my table.
Where do you get casino d10s and d20s?
I honestly can't imagine a dice roller to be more convenient than physical rolling unless you're dealing with huge dice pools, especially if you are playing a game with an exploding dice mechanic.
glue together casino d6 until the total construct becomes so big the sides are even in approximation

>Manchild can't put down his apputer for a few hours.
Autism?
>Posting shit opinions from reddit on Veeky Forums
Is this thread bait?
>he treats his friends like fucking elementary school students
This isn't actually an issue if you're an adult and play with adults who enjoy your game.
>He allowed a dude to cheat for 5 hours
Yes, you oppressive shitlord.
>it's always the GMs fault if his players have AdHd and can't put their fucking phones away
Not him but a phone screen is almost always going to be more interesting than a DM, esp one without much presence. Doesnt mean a bad DM. Also some people literally will not get the fuck off their phones, even if there's an emergency nearby.
cheating to win a game with friends?
glad i don't know you desu
sort of character that steals
No.
Funny, none of my players are big enough faggots to ditch an entire game based on how I roll my dice. Maybe you need to work on getting yours to trust you?
You should honestly unironically die. You are not doing the hobby a favor by existing. Please die.
No, you're a cheapskate who doesn't keep some extra dice around for your players to use.
>NOOOOO YOU FUCKING NORMIES NEED TO ROLL MY SUPERSPECIAL SCIENTIFICALLY PERFECT DICE REEEEEE
Have you tried not playing with the kind of losers who need to cheat at group storytime?
DIE YOU PIECE OF SHIT DIE!!!
>REEEEEEEEEEE THIS STUPID NORMIE ISN'T DYING WHEN I TELL HIM TO DIE FOR HAVING BAD OPINIONS, MOMMY I NEED NY HOT POCKETS REEEEEEEEEEEE
Seriously, why are you so unimaginably butthurt over this shit?
This.
If your guys don't have an extra pair of dice around then you are a faggot.
STOP AND JUST DIE
No. At least not before you calm your 'tism there
>They however tend to be more fairly distributed than physical dice.
You know, maybe this is just confirmation bias, but I do notice that roll20 dice tend to be... 'funky' like the statistically impossible kind of funky on percentile dice of all things.
>If your guys don't have an extra pair of dice around then you are a faggot.
This, it's really a non-issue. It's the attitude voiced in OP's pic, that we should suck new players' dicks because the hobby is on the verge of dying, that is retarded.
Or hell, just let him borrow your dice when you aren't rolling. I can understand going for physical dice in lieu of virtual rollers in person. But if you're going to demand it, at least be accommodating. Unless you have some form of auto-immune deficiency, you have no excuse to not just take the five seconds to pass the dice.
Are you dead yet?
>Ever playing a system that would use d10s or d20s
Current group doesn't feel that need, but they also all like their real dice (one of them doesn't even phone anyways). Also, our sessions tend to go long enough that most people's phones would have dead batteries by the end of it if we relied on that. Physical dice don't need batteries. Usually.
In the before time, I gamed with a much larger/rotating group, and we had the occasional 'problem' gamer who had difficulty with honesty. One of them did try the microwave dice thing. The first try did not work the way they wanted (constant botches, oops!), and the second time deformed their dice noticably. Mostly they tried to cheat by doing things like knocking their dice, or using dice so hard to read that nobody could tell if that was a 1, a 4, or a 7. Seriously, black and white speckled dice should never have white numbers. We made that guy use loaner dice when he brought those a second time. (Which I never got back, but at least he was using dice we could all read afterwards.)
No, but I bet he'll use a die to roll stuff now.
>that we should suck new players' dicks because the hobby is on the verge of dying
This just makes me wonder if you're dictating your posts to someone, because you clearly can't read.
no shit user
Smartphones are proven to be addictive and normal people will fail to avoid looking at their fucking phone while dating and even while having fucking sex despite genuinelly enjoying themselves.
If normal people can't beat the pull I don't expect my group of junkie losers to do any better.
