Tips for a first time GM?

Hi there Veeky Forums, I've played 3.5 and Pathfinder campaigns as a player before but now I'm trying to build my first campaign as a GM.
I'm wondering if there's any tips you guys have for how to prep well for a campaign. I've got a broad focus for where the world is headed. I've got all the major players for my places. I guess what I'm really having trouble with is quest prepping and figuring out how to structure events in a game like pathfinder.

Any protips out there?

be ready to make things up on the spot in case your players ask about some small detail you didn't think of in advance

have a backup plan if your players aren't going in the "right" direction and clearly aren't interested in doing so. Remember that the whole point of the game is to have a good time, and if they would rather do a dungeon crawl with a lot of combat than get involved with your dinner party scenario then you just have to roll with it.

I can't give you advice on how to use your systems but I can give you some general stuff

>Do a session 0 where your players create their characters, talk about what they (and what you!) want to play, be it dungeon crawling, political intrigue, horror..., what you don't want to see at the table, explain them the rules ect

>Make maps when needed and when possible, it can be useful for you and the player to know where the character, I'm using an erasable surface to quickly draw what the PC see, it allow the players to use a little more strategy during combat

Now about how to "prepare and figuring out the events (though I don't know much about Pathfinder)

>Prepare the general outline of your campaign, you don't need to write how every session should go because players often surprise you with uncanny choices and actions you didn't see coming so work step by step like this
>prep session 1>play session 1>prep session 2>play session 2 ect ect

>Prepare only what you need for each session, by "what you need" I mean the general outline of it, on a word document or on paper, by doing this, you have a plan for how the session should generally go, for example
1 The player explore the cave
2The player are attacked
3The player discover a secret room after the fight
This doesnt mean you should railroad, you just prepare a large field of action for your player but they have to follow your intrigue (which can largely change because of your players and it can be a good thing!)

>Like this user said you have to learn to improvise on the spot also don't be onibulated by your story, if it change direction it's perfectly fine as long as it fit the tone of it.

Post is to long, I'll just had one more thing right after it

It's a trap.

>Prepare what you need for the session 1, by "what you need" I mean the general outline of it, on a word document or on paper, by doing this, you have a plan for how the session should generally go, for example
1 The player explore the cave
2The player discover a strange room
3The player encounter monsters
This doesnt mean you should railroad, you just prepare a large field of action for your player but they have to follow your intrigue (which can largely change because of your players and it can be a good thing!)

>Always have a paper with tons of name written on it, this allow you to create npc on the spot when needed in addition you can also put next to their name a single traits so they already have a personality you can more or less develop. I do something like this:

What I've found works best with my group is pretty much building a sandbox and letting the plot emerge organically - as others have said, improvise. Give them a mysterious magical trinket or the like that could have any number of origins, and whatever they end up doing, if you spot an opportunity to insert a connection to the trinket, do so. They decided to go clear the bandit camp that keeps raiding highways in this area? Then they find crates full of strange devices with the same symbol as the trinket on them that the bandits looted from somewhere. They wanted to clear a dungeon of monsters? Then there's a sealed door that the trinket opens within. Some of the best campaigns I've had have been the result of just dropping a lot of open-ended leads early on and then finding opportunities to build on them and tie them all together into something big and climatic, in the meantime just allowing the players to do as they please and adventure along the way.

Source!
Whatever that is I am buying a hundred!

Make sure you have all your rules handy and consider making reference sheets and game aids where necessary. Nothing breaks up a game like having to crack open a rulebook.

If your players like miniatures and you are the crafty sort there are some really cool things you can do (look up DMScotty's "The DM's Craft" channel on youtube) but that stuff takes a lot of time, so only go for it if you enjoy it and/or you know it will be enjoyed.

when is trap so obvious it is no longer a trap?

If you were in a well-lit dungeon, and saw a pit with a sign in front of it labeled "WARNING: Pit Ahead! Watch your step!" would that still be a trap?

Yes plz

I found the source but it's in moon runes, maybe some weeb user can help more
【C91】メイド三日月本【新刊サンプル】
and the artist's pixiv pixiv.net/member.php?id=167837

Well that c91 means it was sold on 91th Comiket (December 2016) buuut plugging c91+trap into e-hentai does not find that particular cover.
(there is a slight chance it got plugged with shota tag and restricted to sadpanda, but I don't have access for it set up on my phone to check)

Okay checking on nhentai (with no scruples about pedohunts) still has none. Unfortunately.

some of the artist's other work with those characters don't appear to feature crossdressing, so maybe it is just filed under yaoi

Did that too and still nothin'.

And in the sample of the doujinshi he put on the pixiv, it clearly does have crossdressing so it would have that tag anyway,

So sadly, from all the searching I did, I can only conclude that this hentai has not been scanned onto the webs.

If your group uses miniatures and tactical maps consider looking into wargame kits for your baddies. As much as people whine about GW, getting a dozen LotR spear wielding mooks for twenty bucks or twenty chaos marauders for forty is not terrible for TTRPGs, and certainly even cheaper than Reaper bones.

ah well can't be helped I guess

Althoough after trying a different search I picked up another hentai by the same guy about those two boys

Start small. You may have a grand idea for your world and all the interesting plot threads and political intrigue, but the average player can only absorb so much information.

I can't begin to tell you how many games I've played in where the setting was decent, but the DM essentially tried to cram the entirety of the Game of Thrones wiki into one session.

Just focus in on one small area, with your starting party, and let them feel into the groove first. They can learn all the great lore and history of your world later.

>when is trap so obvious it is no longer a trap?
When he's naked and you can see the dick (feminine).

The meaning of "hidden boy" has fallen out of use.

It's more like "boy that *could* easily pass, even if at the moment the dink is clearly visible"

>hairy

Typically not.

That's a sad state of affairs. At the risk of sounding /pol/, traps together with futanari coincide sadly with western society turning progressively more cucked and gay. /d/ is now full of cock-loving guys.

I'm sure somebody could muster equally poltarded reply, but I'll just tell you to shut up and leave if you don't like it.

western society =/= what you see on Veeky Forums

if you are concerned with balance between players and the perception of it, you gotta pay attention to how many combats you have in a day among other things.

to make it simple if the party fights 4 times in a day spellcaster classes are gonna feel a bit better than others ( starting from level 4-5), but if the party fights only once or twice in a day wizards and clerics are gonna feel overpowered to anyone; if you let them know they are not gonna have any more encounters for that day they can just burn out all their spells and that's just OP.
If left unchecked this factor affects game balance more than any other.

Generally this mean you want a "reasons we can't just clear the monsters in some rooms, then get out and go to sleep and come back in tomorrow" for each dungeon you design, and you rarely ever want to tell your players "this si certainly gonna be the last encounter of the day".

And certainly I do leave the faggotry, unless it tries to infect other kinks.

You're right, but I am not basing it on the basis of Veeky Forums, but naive libtard US students who scream and cry about being triggered and needing spaces safe from unpleasant words and self-destructive "refugees welcome, oh no, please stop, don't rape my daughter" western Europeans.

>/d/ is now full of cock-loving guys.
All of Veeky Forums is pretty gay man

As a cock-loving, western guy I at least appreciate your honesty and self-awareness.

Don't worry, friendo, you're with friends...or are you?

what the fuck

Yes, we are getting gayer and gayer.

I blame soy.

Are you European? Because I am, and what you say is not the popular sentiment at all.

>mikazuki/orga doujins
>odds are it's not translated or scanned
DAMN

That one is unscanned.
There is another one scanned but untranslated by same artist But I didn't check character tags on nhentai much more than just that.

Just checked panda for mika doujins. Half are gay, none are with matching covers. Likely non-scanned

Why is it /totally gay/ in here today?

my biggest advice is to set apart the last 20 minutes of the session to openly talk about the game.
Why asking us to give you tips when you could just ask the ones who actually are playing your campaign?
Be ready to grab words out of their mouth with a meathook.Don't let them go without some answers.

Ask them how they think they played out their own character, what do they think of other players(something positive and something they didn't like about how they played), of the campaign and its NPC, give your opinions last and ask what they want to see in the campaign.

My master does this and it's extremely obnoxious and boring.
But it ended up being a good way to let him know that we don't enjoy our characters being raped and other terrible things he had done in the campaign. It's also a good tool for players to realize what they have been roleplaying right and what wrong about their characters so they can correct it next time ( or defend the behaviour and make it officially and consistently part of the character).

Basically anything other than wholesale exportion of refugees is seen as rape consent for /pol/

I am and there are holdouts against the whole political correctedness and love for "refugees", yes, especially in the eastern part of the continent but it is still pretty bad, especially if you were old enough to know how things and countries were 15 years ago.

Veeky Forums has always been /totally gay/, you must be new here

I don't think we've had an outright really gay thread in a while

But totally manly too, not everyone catches. Sheesh...

That is not what I see around me, at all. I mean there's some acceptance, but no american-style political correctness or "love".
And yes, I am old enough to know how things were 15 years ago.
Might come down to the particular country you're from.

I can relate to the user you have in that pic.

Veeky Forums is not helping me with my insecurities at all... It helps that traps can only be done well in 2D though.

>Might come down to the particular country you're from.
True that. In some countries it's much, much worse than in others. Compare, say Sweden and Poland and they may be as well in different dimensions.

Yeah, same here. There are a few cute enough boys in 3d porn, but chances of finding one IRL are nil, so I'm effectively meatspace straight.
