Traveller is a classic science fiction system first released in 1977. In its original release it was a general purpose SF system, but a setting was soon developed called The Third Imperium, based on classic space opera tropes of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, with a slight noir tint. Though it can support a wide range of game types, the classic campaign involves a group of retired veterans tooling around in a spaceship, taking whatever jobs they can find in a desperate bid to stay in business, a la Firefly or Cowboy Bebop.
Vir Inter Astrum ships always struck me as Traveller-relevant

what?
Daniel Bailey
anyone know if any of the Traveller races, per the OTU use biotech?
Jackson Howard
Vir Inter Astrum. It's this... setting, I guess? Been floating around for a while. Reminds me of Orbital, kinda.
Vega Strike is an interesting place to draw from for inspiration, too

Gonna be running a game in the near future, and although the people I'm running for are fairly seasoned with RPGs they don't always seem to know what their characters are doing during downtime when asked. Are there any good lists (random tables would be even better) for things to have happen on occasion while the Travellers are spending their free time in jumpspace? Tried searching the archives, though I wouldn't be surprised if I missed it.
Charles Hernandez
Not to my knowledge?
Matthew Brooks
It is in the archives. Zines folder is a mess though. Some are in the JTAS folder, some are in another (that slips my mind at the moment)
Brandon Peterson
There is a random Jump Event Table on pages 23-24 in the Star Trader Solo book.
Also found a discussion on random ship events on Citizens of the Imperium board. travellerrpg.com /CotI/Discuss/printthread.php?t=10508&pp=50
There might even be an article in JTAS or Challenge.
Brandon Howard
If you strike out, use your favorite divination method -- that describes the feel of the jump.
It's easy to forget that this is a week, in not too much space. It's great fodder for roleplaying. Ask questions. What's food like? Who's doing what. Something probably always needs maintenance.
Sebastian Young
Dip into Rogue Trader. Pretty sure they have lists of shit to happen during a warp jump.
Hudson Edwards
Travellers pretty much always spend their down time training their skills. They do a jump, ref says "ok everyone has a week, you can add one week to your skill training". Of course they don't have to, but usually jump time is the only time they'll have for skills. Refs tend to like to keep things moving once they can.
Its like the only real xp or downtime travellers get.
Grayson Ward
Orbital's good for that

That's not an accurate displacement for the length in Traveller terms. This thing is the length of a Scout and skinny. 70 dtons tops.
Juan James
Use it, yes. That includes humaniti. Use it exclusively? None that I know of.
Dylan Thomas
What version of Traveller should I use?
Benjamin Johnson
I've been reading Hammer's Slammers lately and I think it be pretty fun/easy to adapt it to Travellers.
Taking this a grain of salt, since both HS and Traveller attract a lot of /k/artoons.
Elijah Nguyen
Not really, just want to know what version other people are using and why
Austin Bailey
You'll find the majority split between Classic, the two versions of Mongoose, and maybe Cepheus Engine, all of which are closely related with generally interchangeable tools. Every other edition has players and fans who use bits and parts.
Charles Cox
Alright, I have some questions about Mongoose Traveller 1e that I haven't been able to find, or that I just want to make 100% sure on.
Is there a cap in the rating you can receive in a skill, either in general or at chargen, and if so, where is the source on that? I've seen people say there is, I've seen people say there isn't, and I haven't been able to verify it either way so far. Maybe I'm just missing it.
If I have a career that requires End 7+ for Advancement, I have End 15 for +3, and I've taken nine terms of that career, and I roll for Advancement to get the tenth, and I roll a total of 8, which passes, am I forced out of the career after this advancement or can I still continue?
Nicholas Cook
1e does not have an explicit individual skill cap, and I don't think the Classic total cap (INT+EDU) appears in MGT1 either.
If the career has an "up or out" clause listed then you will be forced out of that career at the end of the term. If not, you may continue.
Christopher Gutierrez
If I was stuck in something that was the size of a small house with 2-8 people for two weeks to several months at a time, I'd probably spend most of it reading/watching things on a computer screen trying to learn new things to pass the time.
I'd also argue that after a few months worth of space travel, everyone on board the ship would know Steward 0 (sharing duties cooking for everyone every few days), Engineering 0 (helping out with ship maintenance), Vac-Suit 0 (nothing better to do, might as well learn how Vac suits work) and possibly Guns 0 (guns in ship's locker), simply out of trying the shear boredom that would come from life on board a small ship. Probably would add gambling or videogame trivia too.
Lincoln Lopez
That ship maintenance default will be Mechanical in some editions, but otherwise yes.

>and maybe Cepheus Engine I'd definitely say that's a pretty big "maybe", too. The CE seems to be heavily pushed by just a couple of Veeky Forums posters (at least one of whom acts like he has some kind of personal vendetta against Mongoose) to the point of borderline shilling, and doesn't have nearly the same level of presence as any other version outside of here.
Not saying Cepheus is bad, but it's extremely reminiscent of the days when every D&D/PF thread was spammed by the same guy trying to convert everyone to Fantasy Craft. Traveller is unfortunately not as popular as many other games out there, and the last thing I'm going to do to get new players into it is say, "We're going to be using this third-party homebrew that's based off Traveller but also kind of isn't." We don't need the community fractured any more than it already is between the different editions.

Looks like it's the typical case of mong publishing having an actual mongoose do the editing instead of the dude just shittalking the concept.
Christian Jones
A mongoose could do better editing.
Gavin Adams
What do you mean by an up and out clause? I'm sorry, I've only been learning this about a week or so. Could you cite a page, please?
Ayden Foster
"Up or Out" is the general rule you are citing, from page 5 (checklist) or 9 (text): Advancement roll must exceed terms served or they retire you, never to return to that career. Most MGT careers have an Advancement/Promotion roll, so they are subject to the rule. That said, Drifter is never closed to a character.

computer render, but boxy instead of sexy. The default Air Raft is a barge, not a racing boat.
