VeloCITY - The Wind In Your Hair

Hey guys. This is Mr. Blue Sky, lead developer for VeloCITY - The Wind in Your Hair, the Jet Set Radio-inspired Veeky Forums homebrew system about shredding asphalt and shredding turntables.

As always, you can always find the latest edition of the rules at the game's 1d4chan page at 1d4chan.org/wiki/VeloCITY.

I apologize for any extended neglect of this game that may be perceived. For what it's worth, my other game - Super Mario RPG - experienced a surprising surge in popularity recently, so you've probably seen me in those threads. That doesn't mean I've forgotten about this game, not by a long shot. In fact, today, I have a new update for you guys.

This update, version 1.4, is a fluff update. Specifically, at the end of the third chapter that describes the default setting of the game, there is now a new list of a long-since-missing portion of the setting: radio stations! In much older threads than this one, it wasn't just city districts or gangs or NPCs getting brewed; it was various radio stations that rudies might listen to on the airwaves. I've taken much of those old ideas I still had access to and provided my own roster of pirate radio stations, podcasts and livestreams your rudie might be interested in. Some are reinterpretations of old ideas, others are new in their entirety.

As always, any questions, feedback, stories, comments and anything else are always welcome. Enjoy!

Great to see things still grinding along.
Keep it up at whatever pace need to.

Been following this labour of love since the earliest threads, and I love to see it fleshed out.
Cheers m8

Sweet. I've had a campaign idea for a while now, but my group has wanted to do other stuff first. Glad it's only getting better while I wait.

Glad to see this again.
Maybe one day I'll actually get the chance to play it

Someone should make a Splatoon module for this game post haste.

Agreed

So now that you've seen the radio stations currently on offer in the book, what station(s) is your rudie most likely to listen to? What other pirate stations would you expect?
>Sun Jump Radio: Generalist
>D-Man: Tough hip-hop beats, radio guerilla warfare
>Starting Line: Sports and contents
>Station Epsilon: Conspiracy theorist talk show
>Nirvana: Cool tunes, ambience and meditation
>Radioation: Electronica, info on parties and gossip
>London March: Punk rock, organizes protests
>Samurai Gaucho: Spanish-Japanese fusion
>Rosen Radio: Classical, radio dramas and theater
>Composite Radio: Never-ending mashup of top rudie hits

Been trying to get a hold if you forever to ask about some design choices of the last couple of updates and bitch about how I don't like them

But I resolved to just use an older version I like and see where things go from here. I ran a one-off tony hawk's underground style game a few months back, that shit was pretty tight.

What don't you like?

I'm on my phone at work so I can't get the book and double check (I haven't even given the last update a look since it came out). But I recall seeing a few stats that seemed arbitrary and were not explained, like the stats offering you a movement mode score that apparently did absolutely nothing. And some sub stats being moved to different primaries. Also I think combat flow was changed in a way I found extraneous.

But its cool really. The version I have (1.24) feels like a complete system to me and my game went smoothly more so than any other homebrew system I've played yet.

I don't recall making significant changes to the "combat flow."

Giving this a bump as I've quietly followed it since the beginning and it deserves more attention.

Any stories of game play?

...

Not the same guy, but I remember being pretty confused about tying grit to soul. I think I asked you about it in one of the last threads you made, and the reason was because grit was a vital stat to a rudie. But it still doesn't make a lot of fluff sense, that some skinny artsy kid could wrestle a linebacker just because he has more soul.

Previous play sessions by other players led to the conclusion that Strength, Agility, Balance and Grit were practically mandatory substats, and any PC who doesn't invest at least a couple points in those substats are actively handicapping themselves. The decision was made to tie those four stats to a respective core stat, just so the system does the work for you. The less overhead to worry about, the faster the system moves, and the opened real estate provides room for more specialized substats that provide a more comprehensive picture of a character's skills, like Brawl, Stealth and Larceny.

If you wanted a fluff thing, I suppose you would have to consider willpower and how it allows the body to continue exerting force when required. That said, if you absolutely want, there is nothing stopping you from intentionally handicapping your usage of Grit when making relevant checks.

I've never encountered this issue. Got more than a few runs at this system and nobody felt handicapped at all. I would maybe question the players and their capacity to round out their characters. the system hand-holding might only work for so long.

>being terse because I wasn't specific

way to take feedback

I really do take feedback. I'm just legitimately not sure what you're referring to.

Subarashii as heck

Considering the incredible growth in popularity and activity surrounding my other game Super Mario RPG after it got an (unofficial) Discord, I figure it's worth seeing if having the same for VeloCITY provides a similar effect. Besides, it's not like people are using IRC on as regular a basis.

To that end, VeloCITY now has a Discord server! It's set up by yours truly, but things are still very much in flux. I can't say how far this'll get, but at least providing an alternate outlet for those interested in the game should help. Come check it out.

Good idea.

Splatoon meets Jet Set Radio sounds like a wonderful time.

I suppose the main thing you'd have to concretely work out is the squid/octopus form and how quickly you can travel through liquids. Then you can get to the idea of laying down ink to move about in, never mind splatting a rival squid with it.

Holy shit, you know what could be cool? If people made adventure hooks in the form of a snippet from these stations. Shit, I'm gonna get to work.

Wat dis?

>It's the Queen of Machines, DJ Gigabyte Gal, comin' at you here on SJR! Hope you boys and girls enjoyed those Paul White beats back there. Shit was fire, right?
>I got some new updates for you on the Black Rose power play, and my CPU's really been running its clock cycles to keep up with this whole mess.
>As I'm sure many of you know, the Black Roses - Velo's resident bad girls who call themselves the hottest shit since Kilimanjaro - have been on the warpath the past couple weeks. They've been prowling through a whole bunch of territories and dropping their tags everywhere, pushing around smaller gangs in the process. No one's quite sure what's got them so active. Maybe they just want to remind people they got the goods to pay the bills?
>Well, they don't seem to be stretching themselves very thin, because the Roses are saying they're there to stay in those new territories. Any gang that's tried to reclaim their turf by tagging over Black Rose tags are being sharply rebuked by the girls. It's not just harsh words and new tags, either. Nah, the Roses are getting physical-physical, I wanna get physical, ehm, sorry.
>I'm getting new reports of defiant rudies getting attacked by the Black Roses, violently! Ambushed, ganked in the jungle with no wards up! They're leaving bruises, bumps and cuts in their wake. Even D.E.T., that hot new Chinese rudie repping the Gold Summer down in Chinatown? He's in the hospital right now: busted ribs, broken leg, had his friggin' trachea kicked in. Hugs and kisses to him, his friends and family. Send your prayers and well wishes to room 421 at Southeast Velo General Hospital.
>Someone's gotta start showing the Black Roses that they don't do stuff like that and get away with it. The Urban Tribals are talkin' about how they're "upsetting the balance," which you know doesn't sound good. The Bibliotheque is trying to get a word in with Rose commanders and find out what their major malfunction is. Until then, stay safe out there.

Anyone think JSRF will get released on PC?

>VeloCITY is still being updated
Wow, thanks OP; much appreciated.

Or as a time travel game with the Inklings coming from a world where mankind has disappeared only to be supplanted by bipedal Bloopers spawn.

And now I'm thinking of The Warriors, but with skateboards.

Maybe it would be worth it to include half a page or so of examples of such quest hooks for DMs to use, or to riff on when they make their own or whatever.

I haven't had the time to crack open the .pdf recently so I don't know if you did something like that already

I don't have sample plot hooks, in part because some of the appeal is running a character-driven story and having plots generated and powered by the characters' natural ambitions.

That said, I do have sample practically-everything-else.

This reminds me of my small beef with VeloCITY as it currently stands: The map on page 49. The ground and the water are both shades of blue which is fucking which? On one hand, it looks like the dark blue is ground, because of the airport, but on the other hand, it looks like the light blue is ground, because it hugs the central city.

Light blue is the water.
the land expands a little past the map

Post Character Concepts!

As assistant to a local orphanage. The boys and girls call him Superman because when he runs, it looks like he can fly.

An artist that trespasses on and ascends buildings for the best view to take pictures from. While this could be mitigated by using Quadcopter Drones I'd imagine Velo City's urban enforcement division and many corporations are well equipped to drop autonomous craft in low airspace. Likely to prevent industrial espionage.

Since he leaves no tags in his wake Warren Locks doesn't have much of a street rep yet.

One of the old sample characters focused on daredevil artistry and near-suicideal stunts.

Suprisingly fitting, now that I think about it. She wouldn't at all be out of place, provided you match her to tone.

There is no conspiracy to make traditional games politically correct. Characters in fiction and gaming communities simply change with respect to the latest cultural values. But you fedora-tipping cancerous fucks always blame imaginary SocJus boogeymen when people start hating you for the shit that you do. As long as you continue to refuse act like decent human beings, people will keep noticing.

But of course, you will keep blaming imaginary "SJWs", "poseurs" and "normies" when you the public hates you for the scum you are. And let's not even get started on how you all react to games becoming more popular and easily accessible.

....user are you drunk? No one has mentioned SocJus in this thread, at all. This must be some monumental bait.

I got a question, when already traveling at speed, would you roll strength or speed to jump across an obstacle such as a gap, hole, or otherwise treacherous terrain?

Keep in mind I don't meant jumping Over an obstacle like a trash can or fence.

You roll strength, if you're going REALLY fast, the speed rank you're travelling at (not your speed stat) might affect the DC of the jump. The faster you go, the easier it is to jump farther.

ok thanks

Expired Discord invite. Can you post another?

Or post one without an expiration, and squelch it from Discord once this thread dies.

Sticker-boy with a chip on his shoulder and some solid freerunning/climbing skills. He might not go as fast as some, but he maneuvers faster than anyone around. His tags, being premade stickers, go up fast and can get higher than traditional methods. He's the king of the angel spots, the runner in the clouds, Miles Mercury, the Quicksilver Kid.

After a tragic concert band accident resulted in his legs being replaced with hoverboards, this high-school student won't let his improved mobility, speed, and near flight abilities keep him from becoming the best there is!

titties why?

You don't want 'em to fall and break while she's jumping do ya?
