I thought they were both lead by example types. Curze was a master of terror and infiltration, his men were trained to his standards and he'd probably deploy them to do as much damage as their skills would allow.
Likewise, Angron was actually not a horrible strategist, judging by that story where Kharn calms him down by discussing a battle with him. I'd guess he was actually a solid commander, who just had utter contempt for the cause he was fighting for and no real concern about whether or not his guys died, so he'd order reckless assaults because that's what he was good at and failure didn't bother him.
