Starship Names

What do you name your starship, Veeky Forums?

Do you go for classic names of antiquity?

Halo-style names?

Something else?

I use racial slurs

Do other vulgarities work?

>Ships in the Star Trek: Adventures games I'm running

USS Excalibur(the Constitution-class starship from The Ultimate Computer) and USS Thunderchild(the default combat-heavy ship from the rulebook)

In my sci fi novel, the main country names its light cruisers after disasters and weather events(Hailstorm, Volcano, Thunderbolt), heavy cruisers after virtues(Valiant, Chivalry, Glorious), its Dreadnoughts after monsters(Dragon, Hydra, Bonnacon) and its Battleships after made up great works of literature(Light Without End, Mammoth Rampant, Carnifex Toll, etc)

I try to use Victory At c when possible.

Like "Sissy Whiteboi"?

Depends on the setting. If I want something more classical, I look at lists of ships of the line from old navies.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_of_the_line_of_Spain
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_of_the_line_of_France

Sometimes translated to whatever the meaning is in another language. Or stick with simple things like "Flame," "Dauntless," "Courageous," etc.

If I'm going for more poetic stuff, I pick pseudo-philosophical phrases like The Culture or Halo.

What?

>Thunderchild

A staple of all sci-fi settings.

It is setting dependent, but usually there is a system in place where the type of name indicates the type of ship.

For example, in Dreadnought (the ftp capital ship arena combat game), Destroyers are angels of war or death(Michael), Tactical Cruisers are angels associated with healing or nature(Raphael), Artillery Cruisers are angels associated with destructive forces(Remiel), dreadnoughts are named for powerful and/or leader angels(Metatron), and Corvettes is a catch all category(Gabriel).

Frigates get named after knives and daggers. Stiletto, Tanto, Kard.

Destroyers after large daggers/short swords. Kindjal, Khopesh, Gladius.

Cruisers after full sized swords. Rapier, Dha, Firangi.

Battleships are named after polearms. Halberd, Morgenstern, Pudao.

Carriers are named after projectile weapons. Yumi, Longbow, Kaman.

Does your navy ever get big enough to run out of names?

I was just wondering this.

Maybe he changes the language after a while?

I actually really like Halo style names. Both the UNSC and the Covenant have poetic names for whatever reason. Makes sense for the Covenant but for the UNSC?

They're easy to make up as well. Just throw an adjective and a noun together and bam you've got yourself a Covenant armada.

>the fleet of glorious transgression
>the fleet of divine passage

>What do you name your starship, Veeky Forums?
Something appropriate relative to it's purpose, owner(s), and nation of origin.

>Do you go for classic names of antiquity?
Only in settings where it's appropriate.

>Halo-style names?
Define "Halo-style" the Halo franchise has lots of different names depending on which faction the vessel belongs to.

>Something appropriate
Such as... ?

>Define "Halo-style"
Anyone familiar with Halo knows what this is.

>the Halo franchise has lots of different names
Yes, you sound familiar. Can you recall any of their names? Bam! Defined.

Well shit, give a purpose, owner(s), and nation of origin. I'll come up with something.

I just wouldn't call the way bungie writers name their vessels a "style"

A lot of oriental science fiction works use "poetic" names, and we have hundreds of actual vessels with religious names.

Obelisk of Winter

I remeber a thread like this.

The USS "She's one of ours, sir" had to be my favorite

Generally tied with mythology, examples being "Huggin" or "Muninn" for small, scouting vessels, "Valhalla", "Elysium" or "Duat" when its more imposing.

But since I like David Bowie, whenever the owner of said ship is not overly serious, the ship is named Tin Can

Iain M. Banks Culture ship names.

Depends on the ship I guess, my last ship was the "Strelka Neba", "High Fane" is a fav of mine for capital ships.

Covenant names are sweet too.

Whatever I feel like when it's time to name the ship.

...do...do you not?

Really? That was awful.

In a Rogue Trader campaign I GM'd, our flagship was called Ius Candidus, which roughly translates to "white power" (let's pretend anyway). It was a frigate plated in gold. My friends liked to be ironically edgy.

Names of flowers for large and dangerous capitol ships. Made up city names with regal numbers after for lighter escorts.

Examples:
The terrifying and powerful line battleship "Daffodil". The majestic and deadly superdreadnaught "Tulip".

>"Sir, massive FTL signature in bound."
>"IFF, ID?"
>"Negative IFF, warbook is calling it... i-its the FWS D-daisy, sir."
>"My god."

For destroyers and frigates you'd have the New Bridgeport III, scout corvette Elm Pass XV, customs cutter Sacramento XXII.

>"Shit, something just did a hardlaunch out of the station! Its burning fast and swinging around to chase us."
>"We got 30 minutes to FTL limit. Whats coming after us?"
>"Looks like a patrol craft or boarding cutter. Its beacon is broadcasting... the 'New NeoToyko CL'?"
>"Ha! Pull some power from forward shields and reroute to the thrusters. We'll be fine."

I've got a few different naming schemes for different civilisations. Or rather, they're callsigns used by humans to refer to their ship classes. These include:

Latin words: Gladiator-class cruiser, Dictator-class battleship.
Mythical beings associated with water: Naiad-class destroyer, Nereid-class cruiser, Siren-class battleship.
Prehistoric marine invertebrates: Marella-class destroyer, Opabinia-class light cruiser

I've never quite settle for a naming standard for human ships though. Using names of moons and planets is the idea I've had, but you'll run out of planets pretty soon unless you start naming your ships "234-Polaris-2b" or whatever. Other possibility is using names of famous ships of war.

I like this Exalted-style naming.

I'm also really fond of Stellaris' meme-names for pirate ships. Feature Creep, Three's A Crowd, Lowest Bidder, just inane bullshit that's absolutely perfect for irreverent space vessels.

The merry ship "Snoop Dogg" the 420th ship of the Portland class

>Civilian-owned
Shock Diamond
White Lightning
Invincible II
Folly
MV [Line name] [station name]
>Military
UNSS New Houston (missile destroyer)
SD 38 (small gunship, no name)
UNSS Indomitable (mothership, carrier type)

for some settings, I'll recycle pretentious Revelation Space lighthugger type names
You, I like you

I tend to go for evocative, classical sounding names, usually with some sort of subtle reference to it's abilities and backstory, when it comes to my Rogue Trader's ships. Examples include...

>The Jovian Tides
>Pride of the Blood
>Hunter's Lance
>Scorpion's Lament

There is always a particularly powerful capital ship that bears the name Charlemagne.

so, whenever we have threads asking for ship names I always end up adding the good ones to a big list

I like names from the culture, so I use things like "enough of this messing about" and "hiding from responsibility"

culture names are pretty good.

I'm trying to figure out good names for my homebrew Starfinder settings for each major civ. How does everyone else go about name conventions for cultures?

>Playing Starfinder.

It's a play off of Victory At Sea

C is lightspeed.

And now we're under arrest. My charge is murder of a joke. Yours is accessory to joke murder.

In a EotE campaign I'm in, my bounty hunter has a ship called the rodian damsel because the ship looks like shit. the rational is that no one expects a well armed bounty hunter to emerge from such a hunk of junk.

Hue hue hue hue good meme my friend. Got any actual advice for naming conventions for fantasy cultures or are you just gonna sit there and post reaction images

Well your first thing is naming it after significant figures - usually either heads of state or admirals - because pretty much everyone does that.
So if you've got histories for the civs, that helps a lot.

Next is just naming it after the country (usually capital ships) and areas or cities, and some countries do momentous events

The next category is just naming it after concepts and notable short phrases (from speeches or what have you) - it's less common than the other two, globally at least, but if often produces the most badass names (Dreadnought, for example, comes from one of the first Elizabeth's speeches that the navy (or England, idk) should "fear god and Dread Naught").

Also worth noting, usually you'll name ships of the same class with a theme (or letter), but that theme will usually be confined to a single class.
This isn't compulsory though, you can get things changing with people being honoured and prevailing conditions - the Royal Navy's Tiger Class cruisers were Tiger, Lion and... Blake (and none of them started off with those names, or names that matched for that matter)

You'll be in for some serious pun-ishment

No bullshit user just play Stars Without Number, it's a lot better than starfinder crunchwise and knocks off a lot of bloat

>Mistake Not My Current State Of Joshing Gentle Peevishness For The Awesome And Terrible Majesty Of The Towering Seas Of Ire That Are Themselves The Mere Milquetoast Shallows Fringing My Vast Oceans Of Wrath

I've heard SWN is OSR and doesn't have a very high adventure feel.

Thanks user!! Have sci fi art

You heard wrong

Only named ship in my Dark Heresy campaign is the Penumbra.

I quite enjoy naming ships after vessels from Iain M. Banks Culture novel series.
They're generally bits of wordplay for their function, or deliberately misleading names, and some are almost memes (The Gravitas line of ships is one of these).

I get it.

>Whatever I feel like

...so...so no naming convention?

>FWS

Free Worlds Ship?

Shit, I've been doing the same thing. There'll be some overlap, but I'll dump some of mine too.

I'll get to all your others later.

Probably 'something else'. I don't know how to describe it so here are a few examples:

>"Destroyer"/"Cruiser" equivalents
>Arms Parade, Vanguard Carver, Void Reflex, Disaster Herald, Fervent Pursuit, Strident

>"Frigate" equivalents
>Gun Runner, Ballista Faith, Jagged Edge, Counterforce, Spatial Guard, Sun Hammer

>"Carrier" equivalents
>Silver Universe, Legion's Nest, Cold Embrace, Starforce Valor

When it's non-military anything goes.

It has magic and Jedi rules?

One of the three character classes is Psychic, you can play and fluff that like you want it, along with a bunch of fluffy psychic powered stuff

Also rules pdf is free, which is awesome, so you can browse that to see if it's what you want, I'm putting together an adventure game for my players and decided that this was the best fit, because it doesn't focus on monster hunting/ combat as much as starfinder, while having objectively better starship battles rules

Looking back on it I seem to name ships based on the situation when I am a player, such as 'The Tactful Huntress' and 'The Breakout'

For ludicrously gigantic ships

>I'm Totally Unarmed, See?
>Not a Warship
>You Have Seen Nothing
>Just a Flying City
>Nothing To See Here
>Seriously, Nothing
>It's One of Yours
>Just an Ordinary ISD
>Several Hundred Cubic Kilometers of Vacuum

A pale and sad imitation.

Only if you can spare some time away from your extremely valuable work rating waifu pillows.

Nobody give a shit about your shit opinion.

>55069344
That sounds like the name for private owned spaceships used as tools of the trade.
I can totally dig a small freighter hauling ore or whatever being called something like that.

I kind of like the naming conventions in Mass Effect. The frigates are named after great battles, the cruisers after cities, and the dreadnoughts after mountains. Kind of neat.

The last time I played Traveller I was unable to convince the party to name our ship The Summer of George. I tried to argue that it wasn't an anachronism because Seinfeld was as far removed from the Traveller era as the Epic of Gilgamesh is from the modern day, but this one guy just wasn't having it. Apparently spaceships need to have cool and intimidating names so that other spaceships can know how cool and intimidating you are.

Also, I'm calling you out cool-spaceship-name guy, I know you read Veeky Forums and I know you fucking remember this.

They are all named for my unrequited love

>Meaning that the young 24 years old Portuguese King never showed his back to his moorish enemies, even while wearing his bullet proof armor. The war helm also suffered the impact of a 16th century grenade launcher.

Weeping Somnambulist.

The two best ship names I've ever heard came from Halo:
Two for Flinching, a heavy destroyer
In Amber Clad

I like using the dominant naming convention of the British Navy, and naming ships after adjectives. Things like Implacable (47th of its name), Indestructable, Incontinent, Impervious, Resolute, and Impassive

>Sea of Light
>Solar Wanderer
>Alabaster Star
>Sword of Celestia
>Minstrel Star
>Light Hawk

I like to make it vary by faction so that it helps give you an idea of what each group is like.

Several factions name their ships primarily after people, and their choices of people reflect their values. A group that names a ship after Alexander the Great has different views and priorities that one that names a ship after Johannes Gutenberg, which itself is different from naming your ships after your own past leaders.

Other groups use names that are essentially boasts like Invincible, Indomitable, Juggernaut, Impervious, Victorious. Some more alien factions give their ships more strange or poetic sounding names like Farewell to Dreams, the Forgotten Song, or the Glass Sacrament.

Not smooth enough fucker

I like emphasising the nihilistic emptiness of space.

Names include:
Endless Expanse
Void swimmer
Reverse Depth
Matter-muncher
The Journey
Purpose
Sanity's strands
Fate
Intergalactic space debris

The Deciding Factor
Foregone Conclusion
Last Line
Forlorn Hope
Shark Bait
Iron and Plasma

"The Long Night" if the setting is suitably grim and/or dark and the ship has enough oomph to back that name up

otherwise "Cosmic Drifter" or "Star Sailor" or something along those lines, I can never think of good one word names that wouldnt have been taken a thousand times already

Sun Jammer

Thot

>What do you name your starship, Veeky Forums?

But here are a few personal favorites

>No Greater Gods
>Freudian Nightmare
>Apocalypse Soon
>Gun With A Ship Attached
>The State Department Would Like You To Reconsider

>Republic at the Gates
>Eve of Destruction
>Unsafe At Ramming Speed

That's pretty rad

Isn't that just using classical mythology by proxy?

>just inane bullshit that's absolutely perfect for irreverent space vessels.

This last one's a bit on the nose and too long to fit onto a ship registry don't you think?

I usually give them dumb names, like "Buyer's Remorse" and "Spacey McSpaceFace".

I figure future-people will have the same views on flowery and poetic/edgy tryhard ship names as I do (e.g. they're pretentious and stupid, and make you sound like a twat).

Another vote for the Culture's ship names, although I DO like the idea of all my Hive Mind ships having body part names in the setting I'm working on.
The flagship is currently the Raised Third Digit, since their military is pretty damn small and if they're attacked that's about all she'll manage to do.

The Unsinkable

In one of the games I played small fighters and mechs were named after animals - Wolf, Tiger, Armadillo, Cobar and so on.

And for one of the settings that I've never got to use aliens names their ships with derogatory names - Duplicitous, Oblivious, Impotent, Atrocious.
