>How long and how often are your sessions?
Six hours about twice a week.

>How long and how often are your sessions?
3-6 hours long, and the ideal is every week but that hasn't been the case for a couple months now.

Once a week, usually lasts 4 hours.

Dungeon Meshi is 5e and therefore better and cheaper than anything this thread has ever produced.

That's (You)r laziest effort yet

4-6 hours, once a week or so depending on life shit.

Just found a bunch of neat hex crawls though. They might be old news, but haven't seen anyone talk about them.

>save.vs.totalpartykill.ca/grab-bag/synthexia/

Its the people who did Hexenbraken, so its more on the weird side, but they look interesting.

Dungeon Meshi is Wizardry 1, which is AD&D.

>How long and how often are your sessions?
At least once a week, sometimes twice. Sessions last about 6 hours or so, but there's a break for dinner/lunch halfway through.

What's your favorite OSR game and why?

Scarlet Heroes, it lets me play D&D and cuts out the most troublesome part of any game: The players. But... But then I become the very thing I hate. OSR is suffering.

Alternatively, Moldvay Basic and Cook Expert.

LotFP, and the modules.

LBB-only OD&D, for the Chainmail combat and the anarchy.

About 3 hours, once a fortnight.

I'm looking for curse tables, curses, magical diseases would work too. Anybody have some to recommend?

B/X/LotFP base, fair amount of homebrew shitmess added in.

AD&D 2nd edition, for being compatible with mostly everything, having the most options, allowing even the occasional plot-based epic fairy tale, and specialist priests.

How does this custom race look so far? Are the racial abilities adequate or should I go for something different?

Was going to ask about this last thread but it died. What options, complete X books, etc. do you use? What would you avoid?

Swords & Wizardry Complete. It's well-organized, easy for new players to understand, and easy to find in shops.

You somehow made something more fetishistic and pathetic then if it was just a beastfolk furry race, which I guess is an accomplishment.

Pretty much all Complete class books, Complete Book of Humanoids, weapon mastery rules from Player's Option: Combat & Tactics, and Encyclopedia Magica. A lot of people will tell you that you need to be careful with kits and watch out what to allow and what not, but personally I haven't had any trouble with them, barring maybe a few Elf Handbook Mary Sues.

Neat, thanks. I've found having players who aren't dicks helps with a lot of problems I hear about additional rulebooks.

Humanoids, Priest's, Psionic's, and Sh'air's are GOLDEN.
The rest, except Elves, are OK.

And avoid Players Option like the plague.

I'd say that Players' Option: Combat and Tactics is fine, Spells and Magic can only be used with great caution and GM discretion, and Skills and Powers is best tossed in the garbage.

What about High Level Campaigns?

Never tried it, I'd kind of expect it to be bad since Player's Option was not a well tested series and high level anything has traditionally been a trainwreck in D&D.
The Player's Option books I've tried amounted to one acceptable book, one Unearthed Arcana-tier interesting mess, and one piece of crap that was probably the inspiration for a good chunk of 3E. Not a good track record.

Whitehack
I love the way that the classes are built to occupy different playstyle niches, and the degrees to which it has freeforming and player creativity built into different class abilities.

Thanks for your feedback, duly noted.

5e because it's cheap, has ascending AC and race-and-class, and generally isn't shit.

Two questions regarding magic: What's the deal with spellcasting in ACKs? Is it like sorcerers in Pathfinder where you don't prepare spells?
And I don't want to use the elemental based spells (fireball, earth's teeth, etc.) given in ACKs for my battle mage class. I'm thinking of adding the Force Spells from D&D as their main bread and butter. Thoughts?

Guys, I think New AD&D Guy just had a stroke.

I think he outsourced to Timecube.

Why are other generals so shit that their posters have to come shitpost in ours out of frustration and envy in a futile attempt to bring it down to their level? Why does a pleasant general with frequent OC provoke such assrage?

I don't understand the meme

This is what happens when you teach impoverished urban youths to use the internet.

I think it's the remove kebab meme.

...

Because it's the end of summer, and kids are working out their rage and angst before heading off to High School for the first time.

Because it's Veeky Forums, and the 20 unique posters in this thread aren't all pulling their weight.

Because there's Neroism in the air, and the world feels like it's unraveling, and you aren't quite sure if you should run or get more fuel or just write a song.

>pic
I'll be honest, I've known some kids in my time who could've used a year in a whorehouse to learn some fucking humility and gratitude for what they've got. I'm much more opposed to the idea on the basis that pedos really shouldn't be able to indulge their fucked up deviancy in any way, ever.

>What's your favorite OSR game and why?
honestly that is an incredibly hard question to answer, because I own quite a few different OSR games in physical format, but here's what's probably the ones I like the most in no particular order;

Whitehack
Adventurer Conqueror King System
The Nightmares Underneath
Fantastic Heroes & Witchery
Pars Fortuna
Dungeon Crawl Classics
Microlite 74

Complete Book of Humanoids is good if you ignore the Level restrictions the races in it have, and lighten up on the class restrictions as well

Has anybody ever made an exclusively called shot/role played dynamic combat system before?

To explain what a I mean; look at this picture here. Obviously this khajiit slashed the dragon on the nose with its axe, but that cannot kill a beast like that. Only wound it.

The idea would be that, in this system, you basically describe the motion and desire of your swing with your weapon. If you try to go in for a kill (like slashing a throat, stabbing a heart, severing a head) your roll has next to zero chance of success against full health opponents. But through several weakening attacks on other parts of the body or through other combat actions, you can create an opening.

This would be an actual mechanical part to the game, not just how you narrate HP damage, to get the players into the flow of combat and describe their actions. How do you feel about this? How could we make this work?

Isn't that how Exalted 3e's combat works?

Anyone frequent other generals?

I wish I could get into the traveller general but it's like they're from a different star system.

>Has anybody ever made an exclusively called shot/role played dynamic combat system before?
Oh yeah, sure. It's called Fate Core.

You use Create Advantage actions to lay down Aspects on your enemy, and then you've got a massive stack of Boosts to give you +2 when you go for the full attack.

It's not OSR though... but nether is narrative combat.

Just start a non-general thread? I mean, I think generals are OK, but sometimes...

neat pic, where's it from?

You could reduce the effectiveness of monsters as they take damage, lowering their ac and attack dice at half or lower on big fucked up monsters.

There's a homebrew that passes around here sometimes with attack options that reduce target ac.

I just ask my players to describe how they're fighting and run with that. They're pretty good at coming up with creative ways to fight a big thing if they have to.

Change Mongolia to RPG.net and Tupac to Gygax and it's perfect.

the trolls are mutating
really, I've given up on achieving anything and am just strapping in to /osrg/'s wild ride.

it's appropriate really.

See that little triangle next to the post #?
If you click it, a drop-down menu will appear. Go to "Image Search" -> "Google".

What's a reasonable strength modifier to give females? -4? Also what about intelligence and wisdom? -5?

>the trolls are mutating
This should cheer you up. youtube.com/watch?v=bXdBzpRDR5I

...

just tell me where it's from you fucking pompous dick.

Sorry?

Evidently it's from something called 'Path of Exile: Fall of Oriath.' Some sort of videogame.

see? was that so hard?

You probably responded to the 5e fag. Don't spoonfeed.

It ain't my job to help you track down images, user. Why should I bother, even for politeness? I'd end up reverse image searching it anyway.

I'm here to do /osr/ stuff, not spoonfeed you images for your benefit alone. Get off your internet entitlement high horse.

>Waah just spoonfeed me mommy!

But that's fucking wrong, that's the splash banner for Murdered: Soul Suspect

Where's this pic from? It's really cool. Tried reverse search but nothing came up.

it's just common courtesy to say where an image is from when you post one

Reminder to not feed the troll

Combat and Tactics
>can only be used with great caution and GM discretion
Spells and Magic
>is best tossed in the garbage
Skills and Powers
>is best burnt

The book itself is mostly advice. Good advice, but common advice.
They very small amount of crunch in that book is OK, but not worth getting the book for.

They were trying to appeal to GURPS players.

What you are doing is bannable on /a/
In a just world, it would be bannable here

>See that little triangle next to the post #?
>If you click it, a drop-down menu will appear. Go to "Image Search" -> "Google".
reverse search rarely works for me

Anybody have the pdf for BFRPG?

Telling you to use the triangle is awful advice.
Next time, don't search the thumbnail.

It's free on their webpage.

You don't have to be a smartass about it. Can you just post it here? I'm on mobile.

This whole thread is bannable on /a/

user, at this point I have to wonder whether you legitimately believe this is making anyone upset and why don't you do this in a thread that isn't dead as shit

5E

>They were trying to appeal to GURPS players.

Like I said, the origin of 3e, aka "shitty fantasy GURPS."

"It is recommended that the DM not allow beginning players to hire retainers... should let players have more than one chatacter a piece before using retainers."
Found on B21, yes/no, thoughts?

Also does anyone here use the combat sequence in B/X?

>AD&D 2nd edition
This. Been running campaigns with it since 89.

>Also does anyone here use the combat sequence in B/X?
God no.

even when searching from the full image it rarely works

Any other opinions?

Be careful with infravision. It's a very powerful ability that undermines a very important consideration of dungeon resource management. I was glad to see ACKs mostly did away with it.

Oh, you mean with lighting and such? I actually forgot about that completely. How powerful is it exactly, how much of a dungeon's mechanics would change if infravision was introduced in the picture?

Git Gud™

>Like I said [...] "shitty fantasy GURPS."
You didn't say that until just now.

Having multiple characters is more intuitive than using retainers. Simpler (if more tedious) too.

Honestly unless everybody has it, I don't see it changing a huge amount, unless you specifically make traps that are designed to attack a party that has to be using a torch to see things.

I mean any fighting and proper exploration will require a light source to still be present for people without infravision, so it's not like it gets entirely tossed out the window. Just, one guy cares a bit less now.
Big whoop, what's he going to do, fight all the goblins alone while his allies huddle up blind?

BFRPG - Uses BX as its base, free to download/cheap in book form, and is well supported on its website.

More or less agree. Might as well let the beginning player roll up another PC if the first one dies. Or as the DM have some pre-gens ready to go.

Better to get the angst of dying out in the open early rather than avoiding it.

One of my players insists that 2E is inferior to 5E because the skill and proficiency system in 2E makes it very difficult to improve a skill - why use a skill point for +1 when you can use it to learn an entirely new skill?

Are there any homebrew rules or expansions that any of you use that might help me win him back to AD&D 2e?

Your friend has a grain of truth because proficiencies are kind of a poorly implemented rule - for a number of reasons - and mostly redundant. You won't lose much by simply not using them at all.

That's only a valid criticism if you try to use NWPs as a universal non-combat mediator the way that skills are used in 3E and later editions.

Why not?

So what are they for then? They do seem kind of vestigial.

We tended to just roll ability checks for most things.

Is there a consensus in this thread about Beyond the Wall?

We can't find a consensus on fucking anything.

Beyond the Wall's okay, I think, but I can just about guarantee the next reply to your post will disagree with me.

>Found on B21, yes/no, thoughts?
I agree with this advice. If you just leave it halfway at "don't use retainers" it's bad, but it's totally true that multiple characters is better. It keeps the players invested in the lives of the "extras" instead of just using them as ablative HP.

I love its lifepath system and its village/setting creation "minigame." My players also really loved that part. I have been meaning to adapt them to a bunch of other B/X games.

I have no strong feelings about any other aspect of it.

How do you feel about reading other people's custom settings for OSR games?

Good places to mine for ideas. Even the shittiest ones usually have a thing or two worth grabbing.
