I've heard that paraphilias develop as a coping mechanism to deal with certain things we find scary or stressful. This is why bdsm is so popular, and why lots of people have fantasies about people in uniform (nurses, firefighters, etc).

It also does a decent job of explaining how I developed my vore fetish. As early as I could remember I found basically everything relating to eating to be morbidly fascinating/terrifying, but I could never pinpoint a "trigger" for it. It was just always part of my mind. If that was the case, wouldn't we see more fetishes related to taking tests or public speaking? And how would that theory account for a foot fetish, a lactation fetish, or an unbirthing fetish?

I mean, there are some easy tests here which I suspect that theory would fail. For example, we would expect people who exhibit social anxiety early to be disproportionately likely to develop paraphilias for group sex, exhibitionism, public humiliation, etc. That's a pretty quick study (I think?); someone should have done it.

I'm skeptical, because 1) nearly anything can be interpreted as stressful, making the hypothesis hard to reject; and 2) false memories are easy to develop, which implies that accounts of formative stressful experiences may be unreliable.

Wikipedia suggests that paraphilias may involve prenatal hormonal exposure (plausible, but hard to test, and how does that get you to a specific paraphilia like a foot fetish?) or an early association between some stimulus and sexual arousal (also hard to test, and not all that plausible for paraphilias with very unusual or downright impossible corresponding stimuli).

I think this is one of those cases where we don't understand the phenomenon very well.
