>What is Malifaux?
Malifaux is a 32mm Skirmish Tabletop game, with a focus on completing several different objectives, while denying your opponent their objectives

Previous thread:

the subject field is the other box

Has anyone played Mcmourning with his new upgrade to see if Academic or Beast Mcmourning is better?

You don't have to choose, its and/or

huh, must have misread, that creates some interesting combo ideas in terms of things that work with poison.

Does Malifaux have any plot?
All I can find online is really basic stuff
Really want to start collecting/playing
The models look cool and playing with cards seems like a great way to get immersed but I really need to know a good bit about the universe and story before starting a miniature game

Yes, there's an ongoing narrative. It's primarily in the rulebooks, with world-building via Wyrd's bimonthly e-zine and the rulebooks for the Through the Breach roleplaying game.

There's quite a bit to the setting actually.

lol, I still didn't fix the name. I'm the worst.

could you give me a quick rundown of the plot then?
I don't really want to buy a rulebook to then be like "oh, turns out i don't like the plot. guess that's money i'll never see again"

It's basically about humanity's efforts to colonize the alternate dimension of Malifaux, while fighting itself and the natives (the Neverborn and Gremlins). Added wrinkles include the Tyrants, spirits of powerful beings that nearly achieved apotheosis in ancient Malifaux, attempting to rise again while the Neverborn pit humanity against them. And the Grave Spirit, embodiment of the concept of Death, teaching Necromancy to humans through eldritch whispers as it attempts to do more than slowly seep into Malifaux through cracks in reality.

There's many personal narratives running through all of this, ranging from the playable characters to average citizens just trying to survive another day.

Hamelin just won at NOVA apparently.

>OP is stupid enough to fuck up writing in a subject
Sasuga. And people wonder why some threads don't hit bump limit.

You can always shamelessly pirate the PDFs (Links in the OP) and see if you like it. There is also The Breachside Broadcast which is the audiobook version of a lot of the stories in the rulebooks.

Whatever. As long as it's still searchable, why does it matter?

I think McMourning is my favorite character, personally. His stories are pretty entertaining, veering between Frankenstein and Young Frankenstein. It kind of catches you by surprise when he does something legitimately evil.

So boxes often come with three dudes but players typically don't feel three of them at the same time.
Why do I see players build all three? Why not just sell the extra? Options?

For the possibility that you will run three, and of course pose variety. For summoners the three poses aren't even enough to avoid identical twins. And they do sell some guys in two or even one packs. For instance they cut down the Draugr and now apparently the Kentaroi to two a box rather than three, as that is realistically the most you will use in a game.

>as that is realistically the most you will use in a game.
Tell that to my five Kentaroi Nico list.

Him and Somer for me. Lucius and Nico get a lot of points in my book for pimpness.

Perhaps continuing the McMourning talk from last thread, what kind of combos do you like for him in Ressers? There's obvious synergistic pieces, like his thematic models and Rafkin, but anything in particular you like to do? Unusual hires?

I do like that Lucius took a massive kick to the balls in the lore lately. Interested to see how he bounces back; it's nice to have the characters that seem to have their fingers in every pie and always be one step ahead get put on the backfoot every now and then.

Shame with Zoraida, after Broken Promises.

>tfw painting a little bit of Malifaux each day
>tfw haven't played in months
The locals just aren't my kind of people. A bit of a shame.

It's possibly a meme at this point, I mean, Malifaux isn't exactly new player friendly, from an inreractions and mechanics standpoint

No, this is OP. I can confirm I'm just a complete retard.

You might also want to put it in the title next time.

Any ETA for the Broken Promises PDF?

just put it in all fields next time

I think the PDF is out in a month or two?

Lore question, exactly what is Hoffman's relationship with the Arcanists? He's not tied closely enough to be dual-faction but then there's Arcanist Assets. In the stories I've seen so far he seems vaguely antagonistic towards them.

Iirc, his brother ryle had the arcanist connections.
Ramos is the one who "saved" Ryle turning his into the monster he is now. That's the big train for the bad blood between them.

>train
Reason
Fuck you phone

Depressing, isn't it?
Still, maybe GG18 will go some wayto fixing htat.
I don't really see how, but maybe.

I've got loads of models painted that will never see the table.
The hobby side of it is just as important.

How so?
Are they so obnoxious you can't stand them for three hours a month?

Shit, I did it too when I made a General last week.
I expected the box that came first to be the one I was aiming for.

And yet not really an inappropriate typo, given that that is where most of the fun happened.
I'd always got the impression that it was less 'Arcanist Assets' and more 'Arcanists have the most robot constructs, rather than just construct constructs'.

Ryle had the Arcanist ties, I think the reason they came to malifaux in the first place was because Ryle hoped there could be someone to help Charles, but thanks to Anna Lovelace Ryle nearly died on the crossing. Ramos saved his life with a crapton of augments that pretty much kept his body going while hopefully his mind heals, but as of Ripples of fate it doesn't look like he's going to get better.
The arcanist robots he can hire are all M&SU, it's more as the head of the amalgamation devision he has the authority to requisition any mining robots, and Ramos would want Hoffs talents on his side, so would probably make the union grant any requests Hoffman put in, so there would probably be very little resistance when Hoffman wants to use them.

>>train
>fuck you phone
I think your phone knows a bit more about the lore than it lets on

>tfw your gencon order still hasn't left the USA yet.
waiting for stuff is the worst

I know right. I once had to hold hands with a family member as they died, but that was nothing compared to waiting on vacation Malifaux shipment.

I dunno, any GG18 changes that might tone Hamelin down seem more than compensated for by his new upgrades.

>new upgrades
Yeah I'm not sure what the fuck they were thinking.

>I'm not sure what the fuck they were thinking.
More rats.

That one in particular was egregiously bullshit.

Any Hoffman players here? I'm curious what models and combos you like with him.

I've actually just bought him, but I've played a few games against him and he looks like he works very well with just his box crew.
The Hunters in particular are solid (though at 7ss they should be).
Add an extra Watcher or a Guild Hound (or Guard, I guess) and a Peacekeeper and you should be golden.

I get the impression that Hoffman is one of those that is a bit too fiddly and it's not necessarily obvious the way that his crew is broken, so he's not been 'cracked' yet, sort of like Guild McMourning.

Havign said that, the "no ignoring armour" thing on the new upgrade is probably going to bring him back.

I think Hoffman is in a weird place, with a sturdy, but not particular fast or punchy or schemey crew. Lots of armor and heals but not nearly as impressive offensively.

Who's the better leader out of Seamus, Nicodem and Yan Lo?

Each of them does their own thing, but probably Nico for a competent player.

He's tank as all fuck though.
Not sure how GG18 will shake out, but he was a pain in Extraction - once his crew get to the middle, they do not leave, and the damage output is respectable even if not amazing.
The Watchers can usually do teh easy marker-based schemes.

The Oiran look fucking amazing, but how well do they do in the game? By the looks of it, they seem to be a good support character to leaders that aren't specialised in combat.

meh/10
They're ok but there are better and cheaper options for whatever you'd want to use them for

Such as? I'm open to suggestions but probably wanna pick up a pack anyway just because of the look

With TT at least they aren't very useful, with their damage output being pitiful and their lures needing to be suited. The lures are better of being used on your own guys, if ever. That said if you can have someone like Yamaziko carry Smoke & Shadows, they can be much more useful as they are the cheapest models that can make use of said upgrade. It helps you block off areas of the board, but their applicability is very much not an every game thing.

>look
They do look swank. If nothing else that work as alternate performers/belles.

I think there going to be pretty solid work Seamus. With Belles doing the luring there got a good chance of making use of their 2 action.

Folks seem to ignore the fact that they are Disguised with an 8" charge.
That's pretty good for locking something down for a turn or two from a surprisingly long range.

If you need to control where the engagment happens, charge their frontline early to pin it in place, and if you survive until next turn Lure your own beaters upfield to keep it there.

Even better, if you have a high Mask(?) you can hit their trigger that stops the target from attacking her back, adding to the survivability.

Think Ramos will actually run either of his new upgrades?

As support models? Low River Monks with The Peaceful Waters. You aren't going to focus on hitting dudes with them due to them not having a damaging attack. Rather you can remove conditions, tank up easily, heal from a good distance away, and even get a free scheme marker to go with that heal. They are only 4 stones too. TT Bros are also a good pick, as while they won't be hitting dudes too often, they have a ton of versitality and can tie up models and tank easily. Being able to stop your markers from being removed helps as well.

Apparently the Leviathan Generator is pretty handy for expanding his battlefield role past being a spider expert.
Means his lighting becomes more useful at about the time in the game you want to start using it.
And the bonus to Ca means he can save the face cards for duels and still summon 3 Arachnids.

I'm certainly interested. I like Ramos in theory but how 'solved' his playstyle has become is a bit of a put off.

Will Ramos ever fix his giant mech spider he used to destroy Kythera in book 1?

He's been working on it since book 4. One of his new upgrades in book 5, the aforementioned Leviathan Generator, is utilizing it.

Well seeing as how he's in prison currently, it will be awhile.

I think he's been working on getting it back up and running since book 2.
I think it was good master plan in the same way Nico's was to speak build an unstoppable undead army.

I can't wait for theThunders to spoil everythingjust as he's poised at the moment of triumph.

As the number one Ramos fanboy I'm glad something is finally not going just as planned for Ramos. He's been a little too perfect in all dealings. It also gives Toni some much needed character and her own story, of which she was lacking.

Though at the same time, her buying freedom for everyone thanks to the good graces of the helpful white man is distasteful in its own way.

Naw fuck the ten thunders. They have no reason to be the force they are in The setting other than an attempt to get more weaboo bucks.

I want the new governor to make them a priority and crush them

Meh. Ramos had his fingers in a lot of pies, but it didn't seem to be getting him anywhere. The guild was very much aware that the MSU was an arcanist front, and he's been trying and failing to get his giant spider up and running again for half a decade now with no success.

He (was) a known active mafia boss with a sideline in constructing doomsday weapons, previously untouchable.
That's fairly somehwere.

Now obviously things are different, but Tony Soprano was getting somewhere.

They are as powerful as they are because nobody knew about them. In book 2 I think hamelin works out they exist but nobody else really knew save probably lucius. Over time they have gotten more and more attention, lucius definitely knew by book 3 but the majority of the guild still didnt but after misaki fought against nicos horde it almost outed them.

>untouchable
I think he was more secretive than untouchable. I don't think he was walking around out in the open without fear of reprisal.

That aside I don't think he was really getting anywhere. No populist uprisings, insurrections or any real shows of strength other than occasionally being a thorn in the guild's side.

My backlog is too big to paint and I cant get better swapping between too many masters. I am going to shelve all my models somewhere and play gremlins till I git gud, focusing on only one master and building/painting everything before I use it. I dont want to play somer, brew, zoraida or zipp to start. So should I go mah, ulix, wong or ophelia? Ulix get no real use around the gremlins I know so they seem the best choice to me, simple to paint pigs and bringing sething new to my local.

>They are as powerful as they are because nobody knew about them.
Which is dumb. They're a criminal organization. You can't sell protection, extortion or do any of the major things you need to as an organized crime syndicate without trading on your reputation. You can't have a sinister reputation and also be a complete unknown.

Maybe the fluff is just bad for trying to point them as both Yakuza/tong/triad and super secret ninja clan.

He wasnt powerful in malifaux or innocence but the msu and by extension him literally ran most towns.

Ulix is good, and fun. Ophelia is a bit behind the curve, and the new upgrades didn't help a lot, but a pay straight forward beater.

Mah is so bad it's absurd. Pretty much every henchmen in the game would be significantly better than her if they had an the extra ap.

>msu and by extension him literally ran most towns.
Gotta source on that?
I could see most mining towns.

Its about compartmentalization. Everyone knew about the scary brilliance dealers, the asian gangs, the asian ressurs, mccabe's notoriety etc its just nobody put them together. Hamelin for example found out about the thunders because he saw a torakage working for lynch, he knew of both forces seperately. The yakuza and the ninjas etc are all seperate branches seemingly unconnected but with the ten thunders in the shadows.

Almost every town is a mining town. TTB fatemasters and Into the Steam

Also that story from chronicles were levi is hired by ramos and rusty tries to fuck ramos and he is mortified.

Can anyone post link to new Arcanist upgrades? Links I had before are not working :(

Maybe that's why I got a significantly different impression. I have only read the guild in the core rule books not ttb or Chronicles.

I see you are a man of culture too.

I'm also planning to run 3 with Molly, Mortimer + a crooligan for fresh meat fuckery and a turn 1 alpha strike.

Mah's new upgrade has fixed her, she's no longer card intensive and doesn't have the obnoxious 1" ML anymore. She can push 14" per turn between one of her (0) actions and get off my land. She is flat out the most mobile beater master in the game now.

That just makes her 70 percent of mcmournings speed.

Okay sounds like my underdog gremlin restart is down to ulix or mah. What does each crew want to start with? I was thinking ulix, piglets and taxidermy for a ulix starter. Expand into burt, gracie and slop hauler.

Guess there arent a lot of ulix or mah players here.

If you pick Mah you want to get Rooster riders + Slop Haulers first. If you can get your hands on Fingers too he is THE best scheme runner you can get your hands on. Last but not least, get Burt + an Iron Skeeter ASAP.

Are there no alternatives to roosters now they are nerfed?

>Fingers too he is THE best scheme runner you can get your hands on
Best single model?
Probably.
Best 12ss?
Questionable.

If you think the nerf makes them unplayable you are horribly mistaken.

Mah can throw them up the field with her pushes on turn 1, they are a guided missile/distraction while Mah and the rest of the crew get in to position turn 1/2.

Why is he 12ss? What upgrades are you taking on him? He's 10ss base. I generally don't run any one him with Mah, drinking problem doesn't go on Fingers in a Mah crew, for obvious reasons.

>Also that story from chronicles were levi is hired by ramos and rusty tries to fuck ramos and he is mortified.

What.

Please bear with the idiot here. Is the Through the Breach 2E Core Rulebook available for download? I can't find it anywhere.

I played solo Ulix for my last tournament.

2 boxes of Piglets, 2 War Pigs (I usually start with 3 Piglets on board but you could do less). Slop Haulers, The Sow, optionally Gracie and Burt Jensen.

Haven't tried taxidermy yet even though I have the models, might be good too.

Came in second too (albeit we only had like 8-10 players and we made a crucial play error in the last game, I'd have probably lost if not for that)

Ulix is amazing in scheme marker heavy pools. The reason for this is corn Husks, an incredible upgrade (which goes on Old Major, mind you) that gives Piglets (0) action interacts and allows Pigs of all shapes and sizes to remove nearby scheme markers at the end of their activation to heal themselves up.

Ulix plays a volatile game, what with Pig triggers giving you tons of options (I pushed the enemy Kaeris out of my deployment zone in the last turn of the second game with Penelope and a Piglet, which won me the game). He's certainly good and fun, but has some counters which is why I'd recommend using and learning another master in conjunction with him. Anything that prevents charges makes for a very sad Pig army.

They take a while to put PDFs up, as a way to encourage people to buy the books from stores.

I literally don't have room. Do you know how long the delay usually is?

Based on the ripples of Fate pdf release last year probably sometime this month or next

Thanks, I'll keep my eyes peeled.

How many piglets do you normally used? I am trying to see if I can get away with one box and the extra piglet from the hog whisperer box.

Today I walk into a thread I know nothing about and see how confused I can get.

>How many piglets do you normally use?

An excellent start!

Not unplayable, just i assumed there were now alternatives to them and wanted to explore those.

The real question is piglets, stuffed piglets or flying piglets. Personally I'm beginning to think flying piglets have a place, especially if you use a taxidermist's "never happen" ability to give them flight.
