People are worried that it makes them seem immature, so they dress the fantasy up with gritty 'realism', adult language, and real world issues to convince other people, and to an extent I expect, themselves, that it can be a 'mature' genre.

It's not. Some people like it, some people don't, that's how it's always been.

OPs like these are almost the classical form of the logical fallacy of begging the question.

>Why are houses made of bread?
>Why is my opinion so true?
>Why is OP not a fag?

The average layperson thinks they know enough about science and technology that gonzo settings are today viewed as more implausible than in the past. 50 years ago, the idea of walking on the moon was ludicrous to most people.

Regular fantasy dominates because "a wizard did it" invites less criticism than "a machine that seemingly defies Newton's laws did it".

It's also easier to work with, mechanically speaking, stuff that's more realistic because we have a frame of reference to build off of.

Or ,you know, aren't so socially insecure and infantile that they can get entertained by guarantee omnipotence and safe space.

Gonzo has always sucked.

False.

What the fuck is it?

That's Gonzo the Great.
Are you actually so uncultured as to not recognise a Muppet?

He may mean what is Gonzo fantasy which is a decent question. My definition of "Gonzo" anything is a work that embraced the surreal and ludicrous with an earnest zest that demands attention

PS: on that note

JoJo is pretty popular Op

Fantasy stories about people offering incoherent social commentary while high as fuck?

That's not what gonzo means you gigantic dumbass

I don't trust this man

Agreed, he seems like a cunt.

Because the pig and that damn frog got their side of the story out first!

Agreed.

So it's just a pile of thematically asymmetric things treated as normal? What's special about this? I feel like I'm missing something, because this explanation has failed to show the difference between regular fantasy shit (which is just weird shit we've gotten so used to, it no longer seems weird) and 'gonzo' fantasy shit (which is weird shit that's...unexpected?).

it just means crazywild over-the-top

Have you ever read xanth? Or Discworld? Kinda like that.

Because it's really hard to genre - smash while remaining good.

Lemme smash. Please.

Only if you're a cute girl (female).

>50 years ago, the idea of walking on the moon was ludicrous to most people.
50 years ago was only 2 years before we actually did it.

You're an idiot.

>50 years ago, the idea of walking on the moon was ludicrous to most people.
This particular piece of literature is from 1865.
The author also had pretty good idea about submarines, biological weapons and couple other things

It's not, Gonzo even got a bigger, zanier part 2.

>Pathfinder compatible
Instantly ruined. Or perhaps instantly fixed Pathfinder?

3rd Party Pathfinder stuff is actually pretty legit in a lot of cases. Like it's unreal how much better the game gets if you ban Paizo classes and just pull from 3pp, or shit just ban Paizo core classes.

Gonzo is good as far as PF material goes.

What said. Ban the usual PF stuff, run a game of Henshin Heros, Atomic Adepts, Sparkle Princesses, Multimen, Ungermaws, Croupiers, Guides abd more. Also replace the WBL with mecha for everyone.

He's not as good as Rolf, Sam, Kermit etc, but he's better than Fozzie.
I'd put Gonzo firmly middle of the pack.

I will say he'd be nothing without the chickens, though.

>Why is gonzo fantasy so hated nowadays?
Anything that remotely smacks of lulrandumb is often reviled and despised, as it should be.
Even if it is an established setting.

Because people realized Gonzo would never feel the same way about them unless they were a chicken.

Is Spelljammer gonzo?

Lazy and inconsistent. audience no longer take 'It's magic' as the end all of worlds anymore

It requires a sort of whimsy which is frowned upon in current mainstream roleplaying culture.
