Magic Story: Vraska X Jace edition

New Magic story out lads. You know the drill. Time to dissect it, critique it and complain about the lack of author accountability.

No way, Jace is Vesner? Colour me surprised. I didn't think we'd go Phyrexian so soon.

I still don't get why they hid the authors name are the female writers so sensitive they can't handle minor criticism. Oh well at least I know the tell tale signs of my boy Ken Troop.

>suddenly Vraska realized that whenever Jace said 'Yes captain' he meant 'I love you'
I'm not sure what's my favorite, all the vraska x jace shenanigans or Bolas becoming the best sailor in terms of knowledge in all the multiverse because sometimes you just get bored. Dude's probably got a personal sailing ship the size of a legion of dusk dreadnought somewhere. Goes to it whenever he just needs to feel the salt spray.

>That file name.
>IE
Why do you hate yourself user?

Our first ever Bolas card was him snuggled up in a chair reading a good book. It's nice to see they haven't forgotten he's a huge nerd.

Also who wants to wager the associate coming to pick up the sun is Lilliana?

Apparently that's how Windows Phone (I don't know what its actual name is) names all files.

I am one of the three people left with a windows phone, Veeky Forums captcha wont work on any other browser.

I actually really liked this story. It was great seeing the comedy of a defensive and confused Vraska with a naive and happy Jace.

Vraska is cute. CUTE.

I always knew she was top tier but I had no idea that the scale could be broken.

It could also be Tezzeret, since he is the main errand boy for Bolas, but Liliana would be far better since it would be reunion between her and Jace.

How will Bolas betray Vraska? Leave her stranded on Ixalan, or once Tezzeret appears have him kill her to tie up loose ends?

Same, I really love seeing Vraska's pirate adventures with Jace's ingenuity.

I was meh about Vraska, but now I love her.

She's a lady with goals that are outside immediate self gratification. Aside from her, Narset, Elspeth and Tamiyo, all other female walkers suck.

What I love most is seeing a walker we already knew embracing the role they play in a new plane. To many of the planeswalkers we get just stay home, it's great seeing Vraska ditching her assassin identity and enjoying the life of a pirate.

Bolas seems to be a guy of his word to be fair. He didn't double cross Lilliana, Sarkhan or Tezzeret. They all seem to double cross him and he punishes them appropriately.

He makes deals, they are just too retarded to uphold them. Especially Lili and Tezz.

I don't think Tezzeret really adds anything, whereas Lilliana is a fan favourite and actually makes a big impact on the story.

Then again there was a big focus on Jace's scars in the first story and that might prompt his memory. When he realises the guy who mutilated his body is working with Vraska then he might reconsider his alliances.

This, Bolas is treacherous, but he doesn't double cross people for no reason. I don't see how it's not in his benefit that once Vraska finishes her mission, that he makes her Golgari Guildmaster. Having a guildmaster as a friend is a great deal.

Is doubt its lili, we just got a printing of her in AHK. I'd guess its either tezzeret or another of bolas' minions that we haven't seen

I think user was referencing how a planeswalker not featured in the story and with no card would appear to finish the story. Think Tezzeret at the end of Hour of Devestation, or Karn appearing in several stories at the very end to explain stuff to the reader.

Ah I suppose that makes sense. I was figuring we just wouldn't get resolution until rivals and it'd be a returning walker for that set. Maybe it'll be more like that though. Who knows

if whoever it is just appears at the end of the story to get the thing they don't necessarily have to have a card. Tezzeret and even ral zerek got mentioned after bolas won in Hour of Devastation but neither of them got a card.

I think lili or ral would be the most interesting options. Ral makes it a ravnica reunion, and having both him and vraska know that the guildpact is defunct sets up some potential drama and stakes. lili gives an opening for the gatewatch to slowly cobble themselves together, but is just generally boring. She's only interesting with Jace when they have history.

Exactly. She'd appear in the very last story, have a spat with Jace and Vraska. Collect the treasure and planeswalk away.

She'd serve as a bridge between Ixalan and the next block, Dominara (her home plane). She'll probably get a new card in that set.

The associate is Ral Zarek

Speaking of Karn, what are the chances of him appearing on Dominaria? It's his home plane and it's been a while since we have seen him do anything.

...

He also has to deal with the fact that Mirrodin is fucked beyond repair and he probably fucked several other planes.

Yeah, but I would think Dominaria would be the first place to go for potential allies to help him with that problem.

>Jace's first meeting with Vraska
It's cute, but I prefer this version: pastebin.com/8pABEfGp

I remember it being mentioned that Bolas has a better knowledge of human anatomy than most human doctors. It's how he managed to stitch Tezzeret back together again.

>Oh hey, it's Karn. What's up?
>Good to see you, I need help fighting Phyrexia again
>Get the fuck out

I'm pretty sure I've missed a bit or two involving her, but I always just assumed she was a righteous bitch. I remember Jarad seemed like a pretty cool dude in OG ravnica's story so her constant beef with him just made her sound like a bitch.

Now it sounds like an unfortunate misunderstanding (although that was alluded to with that one kraul story) and she's totally waifu material, and an actually decent example of a good female character (not perfect though, the woe is me backstory is a little heavy handed)

>Karn appears erratically, asking for help with Phyrexia
>Everyone blows.him off because they're too busy or don't care
>Cue New Phyrexia 2
>Karn FINALLY gets someone to help him
>NP is in the midst of a civil war and the return of the Father causes further chaos
>Karn's one ally goes "fuck it" and ditches him

why doesn't he just restart his game against the phyrexians but with elesh norn and a few blinkmoth nexuses on his side?

Jarad is Golgari aristocracy. The Devkarin have a pretty good life shiting on all the monster races. (Kraul, Trolls, Gorgons etc).

As far i'm aware all the Vraska stuff has been short stories. The 2 part one that follows an Azorious Lawmage investigating Se7en-esque murders. The one where she fights Jace. The one Kraul story and then the Ixalan stuff.

yeah except weren't the sisters of stone death in power at the start of the first ravnica story? savra started an uprising and Jarad was the last man standing when the sisters, his sister and Svogthir all fucked each other up trying to be king of the golgari, he seemed pretty set on actually cooperating within the golgari after that. but then again, I never read whatever return to ravnica story happened, so maybe the retconned the fuck out of him like glissa and everything else that's ever been ruined because the magic writers can't keep consistency.

I came here to post exactly this

>the return to mirrodin part 3

Pls no more return sets

That was like 100-150 years before though right? So there's been plenty of time for people to get sick of elves.

60 at most. Since Orzov lady Tesya still lives and barely aged - her kind lives to 200 but still.
Gorgons ruled the Golgari for MILENNIA before that

dominaria is technically a return set

also i can't imagine them leaving the phyrexian storyline unresolved; and its hard to imagine them resolving it in a way that doesn't implicate mirrodin

They could set the continuation on the first plane that new phyrexia manages to invade? But yeah, the return to new phyrexia is a bit inevitable.

>new phyrexia invades esper

>Return to Kaladesh confirmed.

Liliana didn't break the deal, per se.

He promised to help in exchange for her getting him something. She failed, so he refused to help. And that was that.

>tezzeret appears
>sees jace and starts autistically screeching, attacks him
>vraska defends him and they both fight tezzeret
>deal is basically broke
>bolas finally kills tezzeret for fucking up his plans for nothing (could bolas have even predicted that jace would planeswalk to ixalan?)

Knowing Bolas, that would probably mean he orchestrated all of this to have an excuse to kill Tezzeret.

This seems like the most appropriate thread to ask this without making a new one.

I'm I the only one thinking Bloodborne got some inspiration from Innistrad and Shadows got some from Bloodborne instead?

Many cards from the original Innistrad reminded me of things in the game but I've found no trace of discussions about this topic online.

What do you guys think?

SOI was in development before Bloodborne was released. Sure, there are some connections and similarities, but they're not directly connected.

They are similar, but it more has to do with the overlap of Gothic horror and cosmic horror, there being plenty of it.

Okay, but some cards are too similar to things in-game for it to be a natural thing, in my opinion.

Overall, I thought it, like the rest of Ixalan thus far, was pretty damn enjoyable. Whoever the enigmatic "R&D Narrative Team" is now, they're putting out some quality fiction for this set. I'm still interested to see what happens next week, probably something involving Huatli and her dinos running afoul of some merfolk en route to Orazca.

>His arms were lean with muscle, but Vraska could count the ribs beneath his sunburned torso.

Lmao, basically this is pornography for females.

Remember kids, no attractive women allowed! But it's fine if it's smut for women.

Describing jace as a piece of starving sunburned castaway isn't particularly sexy, no matter how much his new walker art is just a romance novel cover.

>There was no way he'd been hiding those muscles under that cape all these years.

We're reaching Martin heights here.

>Remember kids, no attractive women allowed!

Are you in the same set as me?

this gets me rock hard

I want Phyrexia to not touch Kaladesh just because then it isn't just 'artifact vs artifact' again.
WE DID THAT ALREADY.
Let Kaladesh get fucked by something else.

Did Jace choose to planeswalk to Ixalan or did Bolas make him planeswalk to Ixalan? That's the question.

Next Story Spotlight is Vraska's ship getting fucked by Merfolk. Might be a Dino story before that though. Although I'm not quite sure what Huatli can add to the plot.

>Vraska was intrigued. The whole business felt like a trap, so she put on her flats in the event she had to make an escape.
Fucking awful.

Vraska doesn't even fucking wear shoes!

>Vraska had never been hired to do anything other than kill before.
>She was humbled, alarmed, and excited all at once. No one had hired her to do anything other than kill before.
I know I'm a faggot for being bothered by this every time it happens but come the fuck on.

>vraska really cares about those she considers her own
>vraska took the job to help the golgari, who she considers her own
>vraska enjoyed being a captain and liked having a ship because she considers the crew her own

good for jace.
liliana is thot tier.

They're both just inspired by gothic horror, user. Don't make the mistake of assuming that two "geek" properties must be directly related simply because they both dip into a major pop culture touchstone that you rarely interact with.

If this was really written by a team of people, how did all of them miss this kind of shit?

Simple. Different people writing different sections, each independently using the same phrasing, then mashing it together.
Or it's just one person who doesn't check for that kind of thing, and it's just credited to everyone so we can't complain about Specific Author being shit.

Damn it. Now I ship Vraska and Jace.

Thanks a lot WotC.

Vraska is cute! CUTE!!

Pretty much this. Innistrad was already a gothic horror setting, and Emrakul was already a cosmic horror, Eldrazi are pointless if we can't see them on different planes so they had to come off Zendikar at some point, and it makes a lot of sense to consolidate all horror into Innistrad. it really is pure coincidence Bloodborne and SOI block are aesthetically similar.

His mind was being rent asunder dude
It was completely random

>liliana is thot tier.
Too scared of real women?

I'm pretty sure this is intentional.

>literal backstabbing hag who sleeps around and will outlive you

I interact with Horror a lot and they still seem very similar to me.

Liliana just kinda sucks from a story perspective too. Can you really see her doing anything on Ixalan that wouldn't just be raising zombies from the ocean and having them carry her around to go kill a demon or whatever?

Yep, too scared of real women.

Making the hot planeswalker slut addicted to your cock is every healthy man's dream.

What if they release a different set for each Gatewatch with them all being amnesiac? Next is someone else in Dominaria.

Raise zombies from the ocean and have them feed her fruit.
Fuck around with dinosaur zombies for some fun.
Generally be a selfish bitch.

I'm not sure all of them being amnesiatic makes that much sense, since Jace got mindfucked specifically. That said, the idea of them gettibg their own solo adventures with some Planeswalkers from their pasts returning is good, and is a far better take on how the Gatewatch should work.

>females
Are you an alien?

Yep. That's all she does. She sits around until the others ask for her to fight something with her zombie army.

Vraska having a sense of justice, compassion, and a willingness to get her hands dirty makes her a hundred times better.

t. nu-male
What?

>blissfully amnesiac pirate Jace and Vraska go on a cute pirate adventure

Oh, I'm quite enjoying this. His confliction when he finally remembers should be hilarious.

I'm gonna put my money on Ral, but Liliana is not a bad guess either.

>Liliana
>Will abandon you when it looks like you are the slightest inconvenience.
>Vraska
>Will literally put herself between you and a vampire's fangs

Vraska > Liliana

>you
>week nu-male who literally asks a female for protection while not being able to reciprocate
>me
>real man who doesn't need to be asked for protection to give it and is always in control

>Vraska
>cautious, but will be your friend [ex: bugman jones, muscle jace]
>liliana
>uses retarded ginger fire benders for their own advantage
>old

Honestly, they're going to probably hit Theros first so they can continue the punishment of Elspeth

>tfw no Bolas vs. Phyrexian hell in a cell

Vraska's no spring chicken. She spent 20 years in the literal void.

>Nicol Bolas: I will also gift you the knowledge of a third concept.
>Vraska: I know Kung Fu.

Have you never seen the extensive descriptions of Gideon's muscles?

Though I guess that's more gay porn

Jace "returned" to Ixalan, he's been there before. That also implies the planeswalker lock is new.

>friend
>nu-male friendzoned cuck

>implying she won't fuck the shit out of jace

She deserves better than Jace.
