I have found that the PCs almost inevitable choose the plan that promises painful, agonizing failure, out of some belief that a task THAT difficult must have INSANE rewards.
Either that or they somehow convince themselves that the best, most sensible, and logical course of action is in fact the worst one that is probably going to get them killed.

I feel that folks who stay at home being NPCs don't attack goblin layers.
What I am troubled with is when confronted with:
1) Sneak in through a back entrance that is poorly guarded;
2) Frontal assault killing anything that gets in their path
3) Approach openly and pretend to be representatives of the stone mason's guild, there to offer their services in fixing up the place as a reasonable price
The PCs will invariably pick (3).
Without doing a single thing to disguise themselves first, like hiding their weapons or armor or wizards' tools or familiars.
Then they act indignant when they don't get a surprise round.
