for things that might happen to anyone attempting to study magic without proper protection....
Bonus if it's eerie and subtle
Double bonus if it's funny
Would also like to hear you stories from you on the matter.

And don't say:
>you become a wizard
!
>Magic is evil
Their souls get eaten and die
>Magic is chaos
They explode
>Magic is a flow
They become shit wizards. (Like people who learn to be programmers themselves)
They accidentally curse someone to be a shield against misfortune instead of shielded against misfortune.
You curse him to be a paladin?
>without proper protection
Crabs
Not that he gets infected with crabs, but that everything within the immediate area gets turned into crabs
......everything?!
EVERYTHING!
Even the children. Especially the children.
Everything is crab
Is this what's left of my setting now!?!?
He tries to summon a succubus and instead ends up becoming a succubus, because he didn't know that demons need a physical host.
>You see this giant Planet Crab
>And you attack it's weak point for cataclysmic damage
How much exp is that?
Oof, TF fetish much.
Here's a better one that's kinda deconstruct-y. A wizard that uses a location's ambient magic without taking the proper measures becomes inextricably linked to that location. They "go native", in a weird metaphysical sense, and would have to damage their own magic to leave.
And that's why we call it "Apprentice's Rock"
This is why wisened spellcasters build towers that keep them above the land and rarely leave those towers. They draw their magic through filters, use trickery to fool their magic into behaving, or, more rarely, use native servants as conduits. As a result, they develop strange attitudes, like avoidance of social situations and the like. All sensible wizards are afraid of commitment
That's a spicey bit of background.....
but what about druids?
The Eragon series is full of a lot of shitty stuff, but that bit was pretty good.
Well, that bit of background writes itself. They're spontaneous spellcasters, never trained, that draw magic from a natural location and cannot leave it.
So they are bound to their woods?
Messed up
Depends on the nature of magic
>Magic is like computer code to hack reality, a form of technology using complex sets of inputs to determine the ultimate result
Your spells are buggy. Any number of things can go wrong, depending on the nature of the error, some of them downright fucking weird. Some of them can be potentially fatal, like when your spell fails to release allocated mana and you suffer a mana leak. There may also be security vulnerabilities that make your spell susceptible to hijacking by malicious casters.
>Magic is applying your will to reshape reality
You need to master control of your thoughts and desires (including, especially, the subconscious) before you start trying to impose them on reality. You know the old adage, "be careful what you wish for"? It gets especially applicable when every stray thought can be a wish. You start to manifest a small bubble of personal reality, which seriously fucks things up due to the inconsistency, both internal and with reality at large. And it really sucks when something right at the border of your influence only gets partially affected.
>Magic is dealing with spirits to get supernatural aid/favors
The motto of every mage who lives past apprenticeship is, "Don't summon up what you can't put down." Most magical beings called upon for spellwork are, at best, unconcerned with human affairs. You lose control of your spirit, best-case scenario it goes on a merry little romp pursuing its own inscrutable agendas (which usually don't have mortalkind's best wishes at heart). Worst-case scenario, it goes on an full-blown rampage or hunt. The hunters are usually the worst; they're subtle and cunning, often manipulating or possessing the summoner to aid them, and will usually do a lot more damage in the long run if not swiftly found and put down.
Who is Tom Bombadil for 500, Alex?
Correctly drawn summoning circle, correctly performed ritual.
Clawed hand on shoulder, deep scary voice in ear...
"So why aren't you INSIDE the circle of protection?"
