This is Agnes Knifeelbows the Amazing Yearling of Permanencies. Say something nice about her.

Dwarf fortress is normally on Veeky Forums

But can she beat a carp?

The characterisation falls into Veeky Forums territory.

This woman was accidentally taking a walk outside the Fortress when she ran into a Werebeaver, wearing no armor and armed with just her spear. She didn't even dignify him with an emotional reaction, just stabbed him in the head and moved on.
She can't swim though. What's the best way to teach her?

>7/vengeful
>also had 7 notable kills

>She feels vengeful when joining an existing conflict x7
>Within the last season, she didn't feel anything while in conflict.

No.

Dear board purist:
Veeky Forums is still filled with dwarf fortress memes for a good reason.
The game is mostly about world and legend building first, drowning gobbos in lava second
This is characterization.

Please don't.

Happened just now. I think it's time to retire the fort, since there are no conceivable dangers anymore. But I can't really let go of this girl. She haunts my dreams and waking hours.

So, what do you think of this game's map generator? is it good?

It is quite good, yes.

Just don't use retarded parameters and you'll be fine.

what kind of FB was that?

Dorfs go on /v/ or Veeky Forums.

She's a dabbling biter.

They ALL are.

Unremarkable. Getting bit by Agnes was probably the highlight of its existance.
This thing is toxic and has solid blood, though, so I'm making my squad take a shower, Starship Troopers style.

I really wish the dwarves could get attracted to squadmates like in any other profession, But warriors seem to have a literal no socialise rule.

>But warriors seem to have a literal no socialise rule.
Probably for the best, lest your squad of armoured and armed soldiers suddenly snap and turn on your fort.

You are what's wrong with modern Veeky Forums

Agreed.

This. Veeky Forums made multiple mods for DF before Veeky Forums was even a twinkle in moot's eye

I think what's really wrong with modern Veeky Forums is that it's shunned all the traditional board culture elements but doesn't have anything to replace them. Hell, often times it seems hostile to the idea of board culture in general and doesn't seem to think that Veeky Forums should have any memes or projects or opinions on anything outside the strict field of tabletop gaming

Hell yeah it is. I use a Dwarf Fortress world and Legends Viewer for my campaign. The game has been going for 3 years now.

This is Tholtig Cryptbrain, the greatest hero of her world. Say something nice about her, Veeky Forums.

Thats a damn good idea, i may have to try this.

She carved her way into Dwarf Fortress history. She will never be forgotten.

Veeky Forums has achieved the self awareness that comes with the scrutiny of the other. So the things that once brought us joy, now bring us shame. So we've attempted to move past them, and enjoy these things in a self-referential irony. But true joy can never come from such an enjoyment, only a cynical comfort of knowing that you've not lowered yourself to your previous state.

>You are what's wrong with modern Veeky Forums
I posted that to let the guy know that if he was after DF discussion he could find it (very much alive and active) in Veeky Forums, believe it or not it's possible he didn't know.

I frankly don't care if he posts here or there, why are you all sperging out.

This thing of "I should stop liking the things I used to because I've changed", it doesn't apply to every one of us in every single instance, nor does it have to. Enforcement of that worldview needs to stop and stay stop. If it was the only truth in existence, this board wouldn't be.

Games wouldn't be able to become traditional games enjoyed by millenia, by many people well into adulthood or old age, there would hardly be any stories or traditions, history itself would cease to be, as new elements are created far slower than old ones are suppressed. There wouldn't be any tarot or D&D, there wouldn't be videogames. The way I see things, we can enjoy our old silly ways in different manner, take from the past and suggest to add for the future; look at DF here, it's an amazing engine of stories even in its limited format and a lot of people complain we have OC no more when they would likely supress every narrative based thread. People are actively substracting the deeper strata of this community to leave a phantom of its external form instead.

Sorry for being harsh dudes but I can't and won't agree to that as an inescapable destiny of sorts. This was a sanctuary, a good place. It's not just "being blinded to nostalgia" or whatever shitty buzzwords the next guy uses. I was there, I saw people helping each other and enjoying games. It's still happening today if you look.

Just eroding the board and claiming old Veeky Forums is dead gives you the same creed as a video game journalist of current era hipster website. Maybe I went overboard with this one but still, it gets you pretty close since you're cutting down the leg you stand on.

Do you have a pic of the map?

Is this pasta? Nobody has said such bullshit

I also took a shitload of notes on the world. You won't have time to dig though legends every time you need to know something.

Does current adventure mode has actual content now?
Can I finally play as an axe-wielding snakeman priest?

Rate my mod Veeky Forums

Well it has about as many downloads as my mod, despite having way more content. Without actually downloading it, 8/10.

thank

The topic (old Veeky Forums vs modern Veeky Forums, and how the influx of different kinds of participants vs the quality of their contributions affects the board and our subjective approximations to that issue) has been very much implied for months (maybe two years even) in different threads. This one touched it tangentially in various responses mostly, from the idea of restricting /dorf/ to Veeky Forums
or don't and how the old elements of board culture that are gone have not been replaced by something equal or better.

Even if the whole matter was not referenced directly its consequences can be observed, so I'd rather adress it directly. That's why it isn't posted as a response to anyone in particular.

It's been a while since I played fortress, and I don't want to relearn all the keys and remember the state of my last leverfort, I'm not entirely sure I like your races from the short description that was provided but at least you have a lorefile, gave them languages and tried to test for bugs.

4/5, although as I said, I may not use it.
Will put somewhere in favorites to download later if I get on the bike again.

GOTY

>Axe wield
Yes
>Scaliebait
Yes
>Priest
Sadly not yet

What don't you like about them? I'm not bothered, everyone has their own tastes and all that, I'm just curious. The viewpoints of other people can always be interesting.

What about bards?

Yes, you can sing, dance, recite poems, and tell stories.

you're on poo lol owned LOL

you posted this on dfg

I wanna download DF and play it, but I saw that the last (major?) update was all back in july last year.

What are the chances that Toady will release a new update out of nowhere?

>Asking why people are sperging out on a Trinidadian candlemaking forum

He's been working furiously on the upcoming one. Should be out this month or the next.

That update is very likely to be released on january as well

>Desert is perfectly symmetrical

Are you kidding me? That would be awesome. Militiamen leading an armed insurrection against your dumbass nobles.

where?

But Agnes is the duchess. And the king and queen who brought the other four members of Heaven Angels had an accident under a bridge a few weeks after arrival - there's slabs dedicated to the tragedy and everything.

On that topic, how do people get tantrum spirals? I've done a number of forts by now and even at my highest casualty rates dwarves are always calm enough not to start fights with each other. I've even killed my own forts by banning alcohol and watching the population thirst to death, but no riots. Is there a key element to it that I'm missing?

>he doesn't use legends to make campaigns

dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=4359

>anything to replace them
How about TRADITIONAL GAMES?

In addition to that you can get a reputation as being a bard too by dancing and singing a lot in a civilization.

I once made a random world which was 98% goblin. Pretty much everything in game had goblin names, to include the world itself.

But user, that's already shunned.

Honestly DF is boring once you know how to play it
>Embark until you find a volcano with decent ore
>Magma smelt all your ore
>Have full suits of armor
>Very rich
>Nothing to do, years away from invasions starting
>A single werecreature still slaughters your trained militia in full fucking iron armor
I usually hit the underground biomes and quit because it seems like I put a lot of effort into making good soldiers only for them to die off. And then making actually effective dwarf by training cheese gets nerfed so you can't even do that.

That's because you're not playing high risk high reward. I mean, volcano when you can dig and live down at a magma pipe? Iron when you can go straight for adamantine? Training when you can throw your dwarves at early goblin siege parties and select the ones that survive?
You're don't "know how to play it", you know how to play the easy difficulty version.

That's even worse
>rush to caverns
>get blown the fuck out by some random something-or-the-other nightmare
>do it all over again
What's the point?

Do you play video games on easy then complain about a lack of being challenged?
It's a sandbox game! Set challenging goals for yourself. I start every fort with a goal in mind that I've never accomplished before.

>What is the point of being a dwarf?
>I'd rather live forever and accomplish nothing.
>I'd rather be an elf.
>Why am I bored playing Elf Rampart though?

But can you make a fort that stands the test of time?
A Dwarven pyramid in the desert, with a fortification at the nearest oasis?

>Honestly X game is boring in you play it on easy.

I've never played DF ever before and i plan to now, what are the do's and dont's?

Do: dig
Don't: dig too deep

Don't have fun.
Do have !!! FUN !!!

I tried to make a massive tower with a central platinum staircase that housed the entirety of my library, surrounded by a multiracial society.
>"Halflings" living in small homes dug into the soil levels of the hill with their workshops right in the home.
>Dwarves living in the subterranean rock in large communal halls and shared rock workshops and forges.
>"Elves" living in multistoried treetop lodges made entirely of wood, with wood furniture and gem windows.
>Humans living in the large above-surface longhouse made of a combination of porcelain roof, stone wall exterior and wood wall interior.
Unfortunately, I neglected to build a real wall around the city. So while my soldiers were technically capable of slaughtering a near infinite amount of gobbos, beak dogs and trolls, there was no way to protect the population and property during a siege. After a particularly large siege, the remaining survivors were horded into the longhouse and it was allowed to collapse into the townhall, killing almost all of the rest of the population as well as hundreds of visiting performers.
The tower now stands as a haunted and dark reminder of the dangers of allowing gobbos to cross into your multicultural utopian society.

Is adventurer mode worth playing or is dorf fort better?

Fort mode is your typical DF experience while Adventure mode is more singleplayer roguelike-esque. Up to you.

I'll try adventurer mode first as it looks like less of a burden on my under developed walnut brain

Good luck, and have !!! FUN !!!

Just read the wiki and play with the wiki open, it's to complicated for a simple do and don't. Don't expect to not lose I guess.

This kind of stuff happens to all thrown out militia commanders, retard

That is quite common - gobos never die of old age so there populations are enormous

It depends on personal preference, but there's a few things that make life easier for your dorfs:
>pigs and chickens/turkeys/etc can be kept underground. Chickens/turkeys/etc breed mad fast. You'll practically never run out of eggs and meat.
>medical dorfs are kind of rare in migrant waves so it's probably better to bring one on embark to be the fort's doctor
>for castle building, dry moats are better than water filled moats. (Some enemy creatures can swim). Some enemy creatures can also climb 1 or 2 Z high cliffs/walls, so either digging an overhang on the inside of the moat or building tall walls works best.
>even big creatures like giants can be caught in cage traps, and wooden cages work as good as metal ones
>elves will get pissy and refuse to trade with you if you try to sell them ANYTHING made of wood
>if it would or has worked IRL, it'll probably work in DF
Happy dorfing user.

>if it would or has worked IRL, it'll probably work in DF
Yes, I remember when we invented the water-wheel/screwpump combo. All our agriculture was almost immediately eradicated as all seeds and mushrooms spawn were milled into paste and flour, which is why the illuminati have forbidden so-called "perpetum mobile's" under the pretense of "science".

lel
Ok, there's exceptions, but I mean tactically with defensive designs.

Bump

>he doesn't bury seed vaults and other survivalist hoards at strategic locations in case some catastrophe destroys the main stockpiles or renders them inaccessible
You deserved that really.

has anyone here ever generated the largest world with the longest history?
Does that shit even compute or does it come to a grinding halt with nothing to look forward to except for frames per day gameplay?

It's not too terribly bad with stuff like traffic priority designations, an atom-smasher, sane stockpile sizes, and whatnot.

I am currently generating a huge region and waiting for the history to hit year 1050 (just 150 years to go!). I look forward to see if I can even load it when I get around to everything else.

You could very well end up rolling the world into the Age of Nothing if you do that, user.

Do Veeky Forums look forward to the next release? It sounds promising.

More tidbits you may be interested in:
>capturing and storing a vampire makes a fort immortal. It can't ever be completely destroyed.
>having a dorf turned into a werecreature and safely stored makes the fort invulnerable at least for the lifetime of that dorf. I'm not sure if weredorfs age normally.
>sieges will sometimes send elite markswhatevers. They're snipers that will do shit like wound one of your dorfs through the castle fortifications and wait for another to come try to drag the injured away, then wound them, etc.
>simple wooden retracting drawbridges make for excellent "shutters" to cover the fortifications on castle walls and pillboxes
>pillboxes, shutters, and tunneling make an effective vietcong style method of harassing siege forces without exposing your dorfs to much, if any, enemy attack
>due to a bug, hunters and military marksdorfs should NOT overlap
>an internal water source, such as a cistern under the tavern with a well is a must. Injured dorfs can only be given water to drink.
>make sure the hospital is at max thread storage or lower hospital thread storage before you have dorfs start extracting adamantine thread, and make wafers asap
>if you don't have flux, but do have iron and silver: Iron for piercing weapons and armor, silver for blunt weapons
>any armour, even copper is better than no armour
>an elite, highly trained, very well equipped dorf is more effective than entire squads of poorly trained, poorly equipped dorfs
>most threats can be dealt with without military intervention

>*raising drawbridges

>you can play animal people in adventure mode now
When was this added? It's been a long time ago I haven't played Dwarf Fortress.

The last year, also temples, libraries and inns were added in adventure and fort mode

That's awesome, thank you for showing me.

That looks useful, thank you

>Should be out this month or the next.
he he he
Never trust the Toad to release an update when he makes it sound like it's right around the corner. It most likely won't be out before Christmas.
