Let's Create A Setting

>The Borders of the Farthest Heavens are breaking down, and the Infernal forces of ENTROPY are beginning to push into the material plane

It turns out ETROPY is just trying to save us from encroaching stagnation as ENTHALPY is starting to crystallize the universe.

Literally Never-Ending Story with a change of labels.

>This is a lie. Despite what the spawn of ENTROPY might say, ENTHALPY is yet but another of the guises their forebearer works under. The names may change, but the entity, as well as the end-result, are all the same.

>The First-Born Lords have been slain. Their essences siphoned other delay the end just a little while longer.

Little girls are given wishes in exchange for becoming liches to fight the ENTROPY

Angels fall from the sky and softly land where it's quietest; someone pointed them there, trying to keep the damage to a minimum.

>Magical Girls, you say?

...

You little shit!

...

...

A mysterious spire came from the stars one year. A spire larger than any mountain, that reaches into the heavens themselves, scraping the lowest levels of the celestial lands. A great, grey spire that dug deep into the mountains.

From the spire came the people of metal. Horrifying, awe inspiring, mighty-some. The Machine Lords.

The Machine Lords have stripped the mountain bare, it's grand peaks now flattened, covered in an immense forest of large, grey spires, and from the spires, the Machine Lords rule over their lands as tyrants, unconcerned with what damage they inflict on the people and lands, they work with a cold indifference, and an alien intent.

>The Machine Lords seem to hold a of indifference to the plight of the cosmos in the war against ENTROPY, concerning themselves only with their work and construction and little else.

It is speculated that the Old Knights are creatures born of the gods, and whose only purpose in existence is to combat the oncoming ENTROPY. They do not speak, and very very rarely even acknowledge mortals at their feet. They continue to roam the lands, all along the edges. So far they don't fight much of anything, but they are acting and moving much more than ever.

>Those few foolish lords who believed themselves great enough to march on Machine Lord land were met with a terrifying sight. Not just the marching armies of the Machine Lords, grey, silent walls of metal that don't hesitate or break against even the mightiest noble's forces, but also the Machine Lords themselves. Those lucky few who have survived the onslaught of the Machine lands tell stories of individual metal men, who could cut swathes through armies, armed with weapons of deafening thunder and raging fire, and some spoke of Lords who towered over forests, mountains of metal that walked on two legs and sundered the land with their attacks. Over 13 kingdoms have marched against the Machine Lords, and all have fallen before the cruel steel of the Lords.

>Prophecy speaks that the first step of ENTROPY is already upon us.
>The prophecies speak of a name, a name that drives men who hear of it mad with terror, a name that signals the beginning of the end.
>They see the name E, Forebearer of the Black Tide, Swallower of Stars, Speaker of the First Word of Entropy

>The Great Speakers. Men thought to hold the power to commute with the Higher Heavens and the Divine. Whose words of wisdom managed to resonate within the hearts of a few, who would then go on to lead their own Orders in preparation for the coming of ENTROPY.
>But as of late, the Great Speakers have started to grow silent. One by one, their voices and soothing words of wisdom fading away...

>E, Forebearer of the Black Tide, Swallower of Stars, Speaker of the First Word of Entropy
>N, Pioneer of the Blood Red Horizon, Despoiler of Moons, Speaker of the Second Word of Entropy
>T, Bringer of the Rotting Sky, Sundering Worlds, Speaker of the Third Word of Entropy
>R, Keeper of the Horrors, Enslaver of Life, Speaker of the Fourth Word of Entropy
>O, The Key, The Green Light, The Eye, Speaker of the Fifth Word of Entropy
>P, The Door, The White Dark, The Mouth, Speaker of the Sixth Word of Entropy
>Y, The Throne, The Void, The End, Speaker of the Last Word

>Mysterious spirits regularly manifest themselves from well-Springs of power in order to offer certain mortals boons to aid them in combating the forces encroaching upon the world.
>Some of these spirits seem to do this out of a genuine sense of goodness, others seemingly only to try and stave off their own destruction.

...

...

>It is common knowledge that the city of Eversprell, one of the largest cities of the western continent, was built around one of these well-springs of power, inhabited by a mighty spirit know as The Horned One, who regularly blesses the best warriors of Eversprell with incredible power. Despite being common knowledge, The Horned One's intentions are a complete mystery. He asks for nothing, but hands out such mighty power freely, and even those who spend the most time around the spirit have never heard it speak, not in the 170 years that the city has been around.

...

Sci-fi setting where contemporary human society was conquered by an alien empire a hundred or two hundred years prior to the setting itself. But rather then being wiped out, humans fought well enough to impress and have since integrated themselves into the alien empire as willing indentured servants, soldiers, colonists and diplomats because said alien empire is more of a benign tyranny, letting the many conquered species have autonomy, for the most part, while they contribute to its ever growing territory. Basically flip what human centrist space civilization science fiction does to aliens. Human lives have legit been improved, as well as tech and the long ago dream of freedom fighters is laughable as humans have found a place in the alien military and political structures, so who cares.

S'up Mugi

And already the derailers have started to swarm. Fuck, when did Veeky Forums become so utterly triggered by the merest mention of world-building?

Rather then war with each other, costing millions of lives and the consumption of ever lesser resources, humans now end their conflicts through high intensity mecha combat within a vast, spectated, underground complex that is part maze, part arena The players either allied with each other or face off against each other for their respective character's nations or political groups interests, each contest is a yearly for the sake of accumulated grievances and the mecha pilots involved are considered celebrities of the highest order. Of course political intrigue and foul play are abounds but in equal part is knightly honour and respect among many of the combatants.

Basically an expanded and updated Robot Jox setting.

I think you missed Behelit-sama.

>Shards of blazing Star-Metal plummet downwards from the Higher Heavens, apparently 'gifts' sent from On High to aid the mortal races in combating the forces of ENTROPY.
>These blazing shells beat with star-song, and the joy of life, something that repulses all Entropic forces that dare to stray near.

The Black Plague has consumed all the then known world, the fragments of European powers not totally decimated migrate to the only place still relatively safe from this apparent supernatural pox, central and south Africa. Of course the empires already there or in the way don't let them do this willingly nor are old rivalries totally forgotten among desperate migrants, so in the midst famine, plague, bloody coups, betrayals and near constant territorial war, humankind tries to re-establish its power while trying to keep the strange gibbering mutant plague-hordes from encroaching any farther.

Demon City Shinjuku mixed with Wicked City: Tabletop Edition.

Humans and Demons come to terms in alliance for the safety of reality, a special investigative bureau is formed of both human and demon agents that work together to stop apostate magi, fanatic, and rebel demon alike from destroying their collective worlds. X-files with legit supernatural elements, mixed with WoD elements and Cthulhu shit.

You don't seem to be holding very good control of your thread OP. There's a lot of vague phrases and names getting thrown around but nothing concrete is getting established. It's like the lore of Age of Sigmar with fewer Groundmarines.

>As ENTROPY spills into the cracks and the Farthest Heavens groan beneath the weight, the cosmos starts to...break is the wrong word
>Heavens fall out of alignment, stars fall behind before snapping forward cataclysmically, even the two of the great spheres have gotten stuck on each other.
>The angels, the ever dutiful beings tasked with upholding the cosmological order, have been run ragged trying to stabilize the universe as it runs down
>that so many have been cast to the ground like a comet doesn't say great things about how successful their efforts have been

That's always been a problem with these threads. It's way easier to say some vague stuff that gets the right 'feel' across than it is to really flesh out some ideas.

I burn available fuel and keep electric devices running even when I'm not at home to please ENTROPY.

>dire theological and existential issues aside, the sudden unreliability of the night sky has wrought havoc on navigation, timekeeping, and the oft maligned practice of fortune telling
>astronomers the world over have been scrambling like madmen to identify patterns in the breakdown, reliable faults that calendars and ships can trust in
>and perhaps more importantly, to keep an eye on the state of the universe
>it might be ultimately out of the hands of counts and kings, but they aren't about to be caught sleeping if the world come crashing down

STOP

>It's way easier to say some vague stuff that gets the right 'feel' across than it is to really flesh out some ideas.
That may be why shitposters come here, it's getting annoying. Not to mention this premise follows the same pattern as the 'Let's create a horror setting' a couple months back that had a similar backstory and had the same practice of vague backstory and nonsensical posting of cosmic horrors to keep the thread bumped.

Nothing happened then. Nothing's happening now. Fix this shit OP

this introduces an interesting question. What kind of culture would a society focused on slowing entropy have?

>And already the derailers have started to swarm. Fuck, when did Veeky Forums become so utterly triggered by the merest mention of world-building?
After quests were banned on Veeky Forums, the anti-questfags turned their attention to other forms of badwrongfun.

Perhaps they have taken to using their every waking moment in an attempt to slow the tides of Entropic Chaos that are threatening to break over reality? Could even be constructing massive mechanical works and marvels to stave off the oncoming desolation.

...

...

OCD would be a virtue. Buildings can't be knocked down. The only way to remove them is to take them apart piece by piece.

I don't think going full-on super efficiency is really on most people's minds in-setting. ENTROPY is still creeping into the universe, gumming up the works and causing all sorts of shit to fail in the highest heights...but down here?

They're concerned about resources and energy, sure, but that mostly comes in the form of ritualized combat replacing open warfare or trying to curry favor with some spirit or other Remember, 'E' is only just upon us. Things can get so much worse further down the setting's timeline. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

So I take it that as the various Speakers arise, the world becomes more and more twisted and warped, until 'Y' rises, and all things cease to be?

I imagine so. Either that, or when all the Speakers are together they do something to bring something worse around, but that might over-complicate things, which kind of goes against the idea of entropy, simple and sweet.

I personally feel like they're each peeling away crucial parts of reality, forcing normally resilient systems to shudder and slow.

This. The world probably hasn't even noticed the stars are going out above them with E's coming. They probably won't notice till it's far too late.

Thats exactly what they do. The first four lay the ground work, they show up, snuff out the stars, shatter moons, break planets into bits, and eventually even bind the very flow and cycle of life. Then the next two are there to break down the foundation of the world, to start shattering the laws the govern heaven and earth, by the time they appear I imagine the world will be a hellish place and sanity a rare commodity. And by the time Y appears, it's pretty much just sweeping up the last remnants.

>The servants of ENTROPY are many and varied, many of which were once mortal creatures who were twisted by It's power, and more still being unfathomable terrors born in the wake of it corrupting Lands On High. But some of the most notable servants of the End of All, are it's Champions. Entities forged by its darkness, suffused with it, making them into beings of Nigh-incomparable strength.

>the desperate, the arrogant, and the reckless throw themselves at ENTROPY's metaphorical feet, hoping to gain some manner of mercy, to be spared the coming end
>And true enough, they're often granted some manner of power, a goal to seek, and a delayed 'sentence'
>but make no mistake: being last to the slaughter is not the same as salvation, nor is the power they receive truly ENTROPY's, not entirely. >ENTROPY merely sets the essence of the supplicants ablaze, burning away who and what they are to fan their flames.

The Walking Sovereign, a being of pure malice, born from ENTROPY. It appears like some massive fortress with legs, yet it is somehow a living thing, or perhaps it isn't, and is some other kind of entity all together. All that is known is that the Walking Sovereign is a living calamity, wherever it walks, the land turns grey, plants crumple and fall into themselves, stone turns an ashy white and shatters like chalk, the sky dies and the light fades, turning the landscape into a dead land. What makes matters worse is that the Walking Sovereign is an incredibly difficult creature to slay, taking whole armies to topple just one, and the Walking Sovereigns are rarely alone.

In this world, with ENTROPY's ever encroaching presence, there is dim hope for the future. Even with the aid of the spirits, the forces of the end are a tireless machine.

But there is still hope. A hope that is quietly smoldering, but will surely erupt into a brilliant flame. The Golden Ray, a shining hope that is unknown to humanity, and only whispered by the spirits of the world as a forgotten legend, but it is all too real. Even when the stars are snuffed out, and worlds are shattered, a brilliant shining star will scream across the black void, and the arrival of The Golden Ray will usher in the universes hope.

It will fall upon those who can take hold of this light to burn bright with that hope, and chase away the creeping hand of ENTROPY

There are some noble fools who believe if they take on the 'blesssings' of ENTROPY, and turn it against ENTROPY's own forces, they can fight fire with fire. As noble as their ideals may be, they do not understand that fighting fire with fire simply causes the fuel to burn faster. They fight with intense fervor but very rapidly die out, though they may easily do away with the horrible minions of the encroaching end, there will always be more, and they will very quickly burn themselves out.

I feel like we need to slow down on the "mysterious material/force/being that turns back the end", because we've already got:
Plus the spirits and the speakers and such. This doesn't need to be a problem, in fact I can see an opportunity here. We mostly just need to avoid having a dozen things that do the same thing, y'know? Here's something to flesh out the Star Metal a bit.
>the Star-Metal falls from above, cosmic shrapnel from the same battles the angels fight defending grinding spheres and wildly spinning heavenly orreries.
>inelegant as the name may be, and many a scholar has their own pet name for the stuff, it's of great interest
>though the larger structures it originated from may have shattered, the material itself was too resiliently forged to fizzle away under ENTROPY's gaze, at least for a time
>Star-Metal, as the stuff meant to hold worlds in place and spin in perfect harmony, forces the area around it to hold fast, stabilizing it in the face of decay and, well, entropy. Lowercase.
>It's thrumming, supernal beat, the very music of the spheres, drives back breaches in natural law.
>...and to great interest of scholars, such influence restores certain metaphysical properties to otherwise mundane materials, as though the physics of this mere earth have settled into some kind of lower-energy ruleset
>still, for all its formidable properties, it's not exactly endlessly powerful. If nothing else, that these shards fall to earth at all says that it's not some final answer to ENTROPY

We need some races aside from humans I think. And I've got just the thing.
>The Warg, a race of strange beast-men who resemble a cross between a man and the common rat. The Warg, unlike what most would expect merely judging by their appearance, are in fact a rather civilized people, and promote various sciences as well as scholarly pursuits amongst their people.
>In fact, many of the most notable scientists and philosophers amongst the Warg have taken to studying the nature of the Higher realms, as well as ENTROPY.

>How, in a world encroached by the forces of ENTROPY, do the Machine Lords not only avoid ENTROPY, but actively chase their forces away?
>It is due to a secret that no one outside of the Machine Lord's lands knows of. A creation of Machine Lord origin, The Forever Engine. For it to work spits in the face of common sense and the laws of physics themselves. It is a perpetual motion device, capable of imbuing Machine Lords with an energy referred to as Creation Heat, which seems to weaken the entities of ENTROPY and can outright kill them if directly exposed to it. Of course, due to the Machine Lords complete indifference to the universe around them and the people in it, they have no intention of sharing this power.

Well to be fair, they are literally fighting the end of the universe, can't really have enough "things that turn back the end" It's like having a building collapse on top of you and saying "Yeah, nah, four support beams is enough"

Fucking Machines, man. Willing to let all of Creation die because they just couldn't share.

This is not the first time ENTROPY has ended the universe
There have been other cycles, countless cycles, innumerable cycles
But where the universe dies out, and the starts fade, and worlds turn to dust
The Machine Lords remain

And who could forget, dear ratboy

>wounded in battles lost to ENTROPY far above, exhausted from avoiding an impact atop the innocent, and stunned from the landing itself, the scattered angelic survivors make easy prey for those who rendered those quiet lands silent in the first place
>still, plenty of these sparse angels make it far enough to link up with their fellows charged with maintaining this lowly sphere
>...of course, while this is generally a good thing, it's made religious life somewhat more interesting when a particularly powerful and strange angel meant to be maintaining some far-flung heaven shows up instead of a more diplomatic one

Okay, with the benefit of sleep I realize could've done better with this one.

>Angels were given power as necessary for their station
>Those meant to push the underpinnings of reality back into alignment? Significantly more power than those meant to oversee relatively stable lower spheres
>So as the debris from losing battles falls to earth, the surviving angels involved, usually those on the stronger side, take great efforts to make landfall in silent wastelands
>After all, they must loose enough power in landing to devastate the nearby area
>Broken and battered from combat and impact, they make for easy prey for those who rendered those lands quiet in the first place
>Still, more than a few limp towards the relatively weak choirs assigned to maintain this normally stable sphere, taking refuge among their fellows
>They would likely be a great boon to the world's defense were they not in dire need of recovery
>Still, the local angels are no slouches either! And certainly more diplomatic, besides.
