this was my first few sessions too. i let a friend who really liked RP DM a session and i played as the face paladin and tried to lead by example. sometimes people get nervous about playing a character sincerely and having someone around who takes the extra step can sometimes help.

Are ass-less chaps acceptable if they work for a living?

I've tried to lead by making my character consistent with their backstory and actions, basically, they come off a fantasy version of a by the book "beat ex-cop" type. I've tried to keep consistent with everything I do, talk in character and come up with creative solutions to encounters such as starting a bar fight in a redbrand hideout by knocking one ruffian into another during a concert that I had our bard walk in and start to distract them. But as soon as I stop handholding it just goes back to, "walk in the door and attack with greataxe." And other depth lacking strategies.

i wish i could tell you what you can do to prevent that but honestly it's the hardest problem I've come across. all you can do is hope they come around or find new players

She wants realistic portrayal then I'd take that as valuable player feedback and make things as realistic as possible. You're going to meet war orphans and widows and cheaters and thieves and whores and murderers and rapists in your travels. They're going to be regular people who might be introduced for you initially as scum (you witness a murder, hey look it's a murderer and that kid's dad is dead now!) and you're going to meet people who come off as nice (that guy gave that beggar a gold coin but later you see him beating his wife). Don't be in your face with it. Make it all passive as background stuff, descriptions. Like you're describing the grass in the park or the way the walls are painted in the bar. It'll be work for you to really flesh out actual character interactions, like the priest who saved a burning orphanage also likes the little orphan boys, without coming off as 2edgy4u, but if she wants realistic, slap together a random number table of traits. Make good traits and bad traits in equal number and start assigning them to NPCs and situation descriptions. Skew it one way or another depending on the party's impact on the world at large.

For past... 12 years (I'm definitely getting to old for this) I've been continously playing female characters using PBFs and Vallheru-based games. Never run a female in actual tabletop game, since I have a way too deap voice to pull any sort of roleplaying without making it awkward. But since in the net nobody knows you are just finches on keyboard and people like to jump to conclusions, everyone assumes I must be a female, just because "you are too convincing to be just a guy playing chick".
I literally had to prove that I am myself when there was a meeting for players IRL and everyone assumed it's some sort of set-up or a prank with some guy sent in "my" place.

And the only reason I've ended up with string of female PCs is because it's simply ten times easier to find a pic for character's portray if you are looking for female.
