Hunter x Hunter Nen Abilities/Powers Thread

Looking for some ideas about a Hatsu for a character. I have a mental block on how to implement this in cool thematic manner

I want the Character to be able to seal away peoples nen. This can be used as an offensive ability to seal someones nen away or as a means of exorcism. The Character won't be that physically strong but, in fact, he probably can't take much of a hit but I want him to be an Aura beast. Think like Meruem or Royal Guards level of Aura.
I want the ability to be based around a Grimore he conjures where all the nen he has sealed away is. Also, He doesn't use the nen abilities he seals. He just likes collecting peoples nen.

Any help would be appricated. I remember seeing a thread from about a week ago and some of the alternatives to the guy with the broken nen was really cool. I want the ability to be balanced. I wouldn't mind if it was tipped a bit in his favor but, I don't want something overpowered. I want this NPC to be a cerebral Npc.

This is also a Thread to propose your nen ideas.

What system are you building this for?

Go simple. They have to give up their nen for him to seal it.

Isn't the grimore part a bit unoriginal? Why don't make him like Aizawa from Boku no Hero? He can seal people's Nen when looking at them but everytime he blinks or look away they gain the Nen back.

So far within the context of the series any ability that steals or temporarily disabled another ability require some pretty hefty limitations. You couldn't play with that as fast as Loose as only requiring I contact or being within the user's visual range. You have to set up a few more conditions first before that could be a plausible ability.

That would require such limiting restrictions that it would be unusable in direct combat. Best I can come up with is a D'arby situation where he gambles or otherwise gets his victim to willingly sacrifice their nen. Even Chrollo's powers required very strict restrictions before he could even use it, and more for using it as well.

Instead of a grimoire, perhaps something like a binder full of trading cards if he collects them. Agree with the others that it should have very strict limitations. Not being able to used the sealed nen, they can probably be a bit more lax than Chrollo's restrictions, but I'd say at least 2-3 conditions need to be met. Try any combination of these:
>Must see the enemy use their nen.
>Must get them to touch the object their nen is being sealed in.
>Must have the enemy explain how their nen works.
>Hard limit on how many people's nen you can seal.
>Person gets their nen back if they touch the object it's sealed in.

I like this user's idea that he has a binder of trading cards of the nen. What if he literally challenges the other person to a game of their choice, and the loser's nen gets sealed in the book? You could make him a conjuror type like Kuropika and have it also transfer the book to the new guy if he loses, giving him the same ability. Limitations would be on the games themselves, like it can never be a game of chance, he can never pick which game, and if the game ends in a tie or some arbitrary amount of time passes the user must forfeit the game. The nen can be given back at any time by destroying either the book or the card for the specific person.

This is probably going to require a bit of breaking down.

If what you mean by sealing away someone's nen means disabling a specific Hatsu from ever being used again by its owner(as like Chrollo's theft), then that part is going to be pretty distinct than exorcism.

So we're looking at two different applications which may be connected. Exorcism may be a bit easier to think up(though in-universe, very rare), but the price will need to be flexible as it will depend on what's being sealed away.

If he doesn't use the Hatsu that he seals, then he might as well just don't have the ability to use them at all. That's one less super advantage to pay for.

I like the trading card bit It makes much more sense for him to collect Nen abilities that he can't use if it actually turns into something collectible that has value to him.
Could be any other collectible thing as long as it ties into the character's life/personality(like Hisoka and gum/candy).

Another thing is that if he has Meruem/Royal Guards level of Aura and actually knows his Nen stuff, then he is going to be tough one way or another. He can be not much of a fighter, but as long as he knows his Nen shit he's going to be difficult to hurt unless he's paying a restriction that nerfs any nen enhancement on his own body.

Electric Tablet:
The user conjures a tablet with a cylinder on the side, one side of the cylinder has a lens and the other has a small dart sticking out of it. When the user records the target for a couple seconds an information page is automatically written on the person, at the top of the page there will be a picture of the person with a bit of information on the person's appearance, approximate height, build, eye color etc.

If the user turns the cylinder and points the lens at the person while they are fighting a small laser will hit them and follow them for a couple seconds. The laser scans their movements and body and will write down information about their fighting style and will point out a way to best counter it.

If the user points the dart at the target it will shoot out and if it hits it will suck in a very small amount of aura, after it's done the dart will dissolve. The information will be sent to the tablet, the tablet will write down a rough estimate on the target's aura pool and how much aura they can release at once.

The information about the person will be saved and be accessible, any new information acquired on a person in the database will be automatically updated.

>The Character won't be that physically strong but, in fact, he probably can't take much of a hit but I want him to be an Aura beast. Think like Meruem or Royal Guards level of Aura.
Problem is that being an aura monster requires a strong body and/or years spent honing your Ten and Ren like Netero did.

Especially if you're making this character a human conjurer/specialist they don't typically have the most aura output when compared to Enhancers or Emitters.

I don't think any category is better at aura output than the others, it's training that allows you to produce more aura. It's just that enhancers are better at using their aura to strengthen their body, giving them better defense.

Aura output and aura monster are somewhat different things from where I sit. You can increase your aura output by having a restriction on your Hatsu since we know that allows you to increase how much aura you can put out despite your usual limit. But having a massive amount of aura like Netero, Merium, and the Royal Guards did required either an inhuman body, the ability to add the aura of the consumed, or decades of training and meditation.

I don't have any pages on hand but I remember in the manga it's also explained that enhancers are better at generating larger quantities of aura and as you move away from that you find that Manipulators/Conjurers are better at putting their aura into objects instead. So while everyone is capable of raising their upper limits through training Ten, Ren, Shu, etc; an enhancer will always get more returns off of those training methods.

OP here: Sorry for the late reply. My School internet is blocked by Veeky Forums so I can't post in my dorms.

Heres what I have so far from the collecting post. I really like the idea so heres what I have so far for 4/5 of the abilities.

It's a bit long but please bear with me.
SpellBinder's Grimoire (Collectors Secrets) [Specialty / Conjuration]

- Owl conjures a really old, big looking dusty Grimoire/.
- The Grimoire has a female voice and is very annoying. Owl Hates it very much.
- There are 5 Chapters

- Owl's Hand must be on the Grimoire before activating it.
- Any person that must use the Grimoire must touch the Grimoire
- Owl cannot use any of the Hatsu's in the Book that is not his own
- If he does, then he dies
- He must keep at least a finger on the Chapters that is currently active
- Any Hatsu that in the book, must be kept there unless the Chapter states otherwise.
- So he cannot sell the Hatsu or destroy them
- He is not allowed to physically harm anyone that has their Hatsu in the book
- If he does, then he dies
- He must answer truthfully to any question posed to him regarding the Grimoire as long as the person asking the question has their Hatsu in the book or will have it in the book.
- He cannot disclose names of the people who have their Hatsu in the book unless express consent is given or the person is dead.

Chapter 1

SpellBinder's Grimoire [Chapter of Sealing]
- Owl exorcises someones nen or places a curse on a target for the buyer.
- The price the buyer must pay is that they must give up on of their Hatsu Abilities to be sealed in the book in exchange for the service provided.
- The buyer must touch the book and must agree on the conditions of the service
- The buyer must show and describe at least 3 Hatsu Ability they have to Owl. If the buyer doesn't have at least 3 Abilities, they must show every ability they have.
- The buyer cannot withhold the information or the exorcism won't work and the contract won't be created.
- At the end of the Rendered service, the buyer must give up a Hatsu Ability of their choice.
- If the buyer refuses, then [Chapter of Greed can be used without its conditions]
- Owl must answer any question the buyer has regarding the Chapter of sealing honestly otherwise, he cannot perform the service
- The payment of Hatsu can be from another willing person as long as a Hatsu is sealed in the book.
- The Curse is sealed on the same page

Chapter 2 / 3

SpellBinder's Grimoire [Chapter of Holding]

- Acts like a Nen and Hatsu Bank
- The user depositing the Nen must do so willingly. They must touch the Grimoire and say "I'm leaving this here"
- The user depositing must accept that their Hatsu might be traded or loaned to another new user.
- The Grimoire will then tell them their secret phrase for when they want to withdraw the ability.
- The ability cannot be withdrawn unless the person Touches the Grimoire and says the secret phrase.
- If someone who deposited their nen dies, then the Nen stays in the book. and goes to the Final chapter of the book
- Owl must then Touch the Book and say "Here take this"
- He then donates 3 percent of his Aura for each Hatsu ability they store in it.
- Owl cannot not use any of the abilities in the Chapter of Holding himself.

[SpellBinder's Grimoire] Chapter of Greed - He can forcefully take away Someone's Hatsu ability
- The person must have touched the book
- He must see the ability in action
- The person must explain how their ability works
- He must give a chunk of his Aura to the person
- He must show the Page number that the ability will be sealed in
- He is not allowed to turn to any other pages while showing the page number
- This must be done within 3 hrs
-- He must say to the person, "I really want that. Give me that"
-- If the Nen gets taken, it can be returned to the user if they touch the book again and correctly name the Page number their nen is sealed in.
- They have 5 tries. After 5 tries, they can never get the ability back unless it's willingly returned.
- Greed can be used without any of these conditions if the Chapter of sealing was used and the person refuses to pay. So, instead of the ability they lose being their choice, it's the choice of the owner of the book

Chapter 4

[SpellBinder's Grimoire] - Chapter of Exchange

- Owl Cannot use any of the abilities that are exchanged
- The abilities being traded for can come from any other Chapters
- Those from the Chapter of Holding must be alerted beforehand otherwise, the ability can't be traded
- 2 Hatsus must be given up for the exchanger to get 1 back.
- The exchanger must touch the book. The Book will give it a secret phrase for when they come back to get back their ability or exchange for another 1.
- If they don't remember the phrase then the exchange cannot happen,
- The owl must remember the phrase for each and every person. Otherwise, the exchange cannot happen.
- He isn't allowed to write the phrases down
- If an exchanger dies, the ability they took and the ability they gave will be returned to the book.
- Owl cannot withhold the Grimoire from an exchanger.
- Owl reserves the right to refuse an ability offered for one
- Owl must state what an ability does and how it works
- The exchanger must also do the same for the ability that they are giving away.
- The ability the exchanger takes cannot be a 3 step affinity.
- The ability will be used at the proficiency in which the original user had it. So, it cannot be strengthed under any conditions
- The will of the previous owner and the way they perceived the world will still be subject to the Hatsu and cannot be violated.

Need an Idea for Chapter 5 which has to do with Collecting the nen of dead people. I want it to have some minor use in a combat or dangerous scenario.

Shit dude I was writing a response to this but my overall impression so far is that it is too convoluted and has too many restrictions which revolve about circular reasoning with "I can do cool thing x (perk), but if I do cool thing x I DIE (restriction likely meant to make the ability plausible) unless I do y (making the restriction effectively the same as the much less harsh restrictions on the book as a whole)". It would be a nightmare to run at an actual table, and it gives you more flexibility than Chrollo's hatsu which is already stupidly strong.

Take in mind some of the strongest hatsus in the series don't have many restrictions. Restrictions are about how you personally feel about the ability and reflecting that in how it works to gain more power, not squeezing more nen juice out of your ability. The most complex hatsu shown is probably Genthru's, and it fits because he's shown to be a sadistic, calculating individual who enjoys weaving complex plans to achieve his ends. The STRONGEST combat-oriented hatsu is the 100-type Guanyin Bodhisattva and that has barely any restrictions, but it is the result of Netero spending decades training and praying away from civilization and thus it is very strong.

Hmm, this is an NPC so most things would be automated. Is it stronger than Chrollo? He isn't allowed to use any of the Hatsu in the book. This and exorcism would be the only Hatsu the character would possess. How do you suggest it be fixed?

He can't use them, but he serve as a walking hatsu bank, and exorcise/curse/steal as per individual chapters. It's not as strong in direct one-on-one combat, but someone who would develop a hatsu like this probably wouldn't be the type to solve things with his fists anyways, and you said he was intended to not be physically threatening. Since it's a NPC I guess it doesn't matter too much, but I'd also suggest you take a long look at all the conditions and simplify where you can to make all the conditions handy and relevant in a game. If he's supposed to have Chimera Ant levels of Nen, he also probably wouldn't NEED that many restrictions to pull it off

Do you remember when that was stated or in what arc. I can't remember anyone mentioning that enhancers just have a higher output than the other categories, but yes I also think that enhancers get more in return with just pure aura usage because they usually don't need any limitations to strengthen their hatsu. The only time I can think of that the characters were talking about aura output was when Knuckle explained MAP, PAP and AAP to Gon and he never mentioned that enhancers had greater aura output, just that some people can have larger aura pools but they can still not be able to draw out more than a person who has trained more, even if that person has a smaller aura pool.

Do you have any suggestion as to better conditions? Also, aren't conditions there to strengthen the nen. I mean like how much aura you have to put doesn't affect the strength of the effect in the sense of what it can do. I thought stricter conditions allowed you to do more but with really strict conditions.

>Do you remember when that was stated or in what arc.
It would have to be a training arc post-heavens arena. So at best maybe Greed Island or during Biscuit showing back up during the CA arc.

>was when Knuckle explained MAP, PAP and AAP to Gon and he never mentioned that enhancers had greater aura output
That conversation was more talking about how his Jajanken allowed him to exceed his normal aura output (something like 2000) with a hatsu that could produce double that. It served as an explanation for why some attacks do crazy amounts of damage and it's because a Hatsu allows their user to put out more in one go. I don't think that was specifically about being an enhancer although you're right; enhancers can output far more with fewer restrictions as shown by characters like Uvo, Gon, and Phinks.

O

of you're gonna mock this with hentaiposting, at least pick something topical

MY Nen Bank Grimoire

>ShindoL
Please god no.

Can't really spend time to make suggestions for now, but here's some questions I thought about while reading it:

>- Owl cannot use any of the Hatsu's in the Book that is not his own
>- If he does, then he dies
Again, this being here tells me that you want to be able to make him use them, but this is nothing like Kurapika's situation.

So really, for what reason did Owl make this vow that involves using them if he doesn't want to use them ? Especially when it's fatal for him.

>- Owl cannot use any of the Hatsu's in the Book that is not his own
Does this mean he can seal away any of his own Hatsu in the book?

>- He is not allowed to physically harm anyone that has their Hatsu in the book
>- If he does, then he dies
A nice achilles heel if he can be killed via this kind of geas I guess.

Does Chapter of Sealing only work on other people? If Owl can use it on himself free of charge then the entire thing really has no downside for him at all, despite exorcism being shown to result in something at least bothersome to manifest. Honestly, Hatsu as payment for this is also really wonky. I get that you want to make it as -the- object of trade for everything Owl does, but its value really does not scale well with this service. Right now it feels like the Hatsu payment method exists purely to link it to Chapter of Greed.

If I remember correctly Gon could produce 1800 in an instant with just ken, but after charging and finishing his chanting for his Jajanken he was putting out 2200 or something close to that. I think he was even able to put out 4000 when he used the emission version of jajanken, but it was much weaker because he wasn't trained enough in emission. The only reason Jajanken allows him to put out more aura was because he is charging it, I also think Knuckle theorized that Gon's chanting and him leaving himself open to attack acted as limitations.

Why does Chapter of Holding exist? Other people would only want to store abilities in it for really fringe cases. What does it do for Owl? Why did he spend time making this ability?
Honestly, it sounds like he can just extort people to store their Hatsu with this chapter and then trade it away. Then since their Hatsu is no longer in the book, he can kill them.

Is the 3% of his aura gone -permanently- from his totals or can he just regenerate it? What happens when he trades the Hatsu away?

Do ownerships of Hatsu as far the Owl/the Grimoire recognizes change when they're taken via Chapter of Greed?

>- The owl must remember the phrase for each and every person. Otherwise, the exchange cannot happen.
>- He isn't allowed to write the phrases down
What's going to happen if he forgets the phrases AFTER the exchange then?

Do ownerships of Hatsu as far the Owl/the Grimoire recognizes change when they're exchanged?

- I don't want him to use any of the abilities in the Book under any circumstance. He simply cannot use any ability that he did not come up with. It was made to ensure that he never uses any of the abilities that are not his own even when his life is in danger or if he feels a compulsion to do so. - Think of him like a collector. Lots of Collectors leave whatever it is in mint condition and don't ever use or move it.

- Yea he can seal some of his own Hatsu in here as a contingency to others with the ability to take/steal or learn about someones nen ability.

- Chapter of Sealing can only affect other people. I would think that if he ever gets cursed, it would require someone else to remove the curse. How do you suggest to better scale the payment/value.

Also, for exorcism, most of the rules apply. He has to take on the Curse himself in some manner so, if someone is getting a curse removed, giving a Hatsu away for something so important shouldn't be too severe espeically if their life is on the line.

- Chapter of Holding is for allies. Sometimes, others don't have enough Aura to do something. In like an emergency where the person is running out of Aura, they store a Hatsu in exchange for Aura. Maybe the % should be increased. He can't regen the Aura until the Hatsu has been returned.

- When the Hatsu is traded away, the person who owns the Hatsu originally can return the Aura given and they can take another Hatsu from the Book instead. If they don't want another Hatsu then, Owl has to find the person it was traded away to and get it back.

- When taken away with Chapter of Greed, then it belongs to the book/no one and not Owl. So, he can't use it as a method of gaining Hatsu to use. He still can't use any Hatsu from the book that he didn't come up with.

- Maybe it should be changed that he can't do physical harm to anyone who has ever had their Hatsu in the book so he can't just use it to kill people.

- You bring up a good point on him forgetting. I suppose whatever Hatsu is taken from that particular person is returned to them. And he can't use it until he remembers that particular phrase.

- The ownership of the Hatsu does not change as long as the person is alive. If the person dies, then the Hatsu just returns to the book and belongs to the book/no one- Owl still can't use it.

>The only reason Jajanken allows him to put out more aura was because he is charging it
It's not because he's charging it, the chanting time is his limitation.

What restrictions can allow someone to do is temporarily increase how much aura they can produce than their usual amount and in Gon's case his max aura output increases but is focused on his hands. So someone like Phinks and his Cyclone Ripper where he winds his shoulders, or Shalnark and his autopilot mode are examples of a user temporarily increasing their aura output due to their hatsu.
