Reminder that leaks have arrived.

Xanthars was dissapointing.

Any word on how bad or good the new feats are?

Thank the gods

I guarantee it's real, has 78 pages.

What kind of blade pact invocations were released in Xanthar's? If I play a Hexblade Warlock, will I be suffering more than If I had just played a Valor Bard or Paladin? I really want to play my undead summoning arcane warrior and have it not be shit.

are there any new races or classes or backgrounds or feats in xanathar?

Or is it just subclasses?

Some of these new spells are quite strong.

Healing Spirit is a 2nd level spell which can heal an entire party 10d6 in one minute.

Just got a mail from Amazon “XGE estimated arrival December 4th”

Fuck.

Subclasses
Racial feats
Common magic items
Spells
Fluff for backstories

Check the leak on the OP, pages 49/50

Which is better, Celestial Warlock/Divine Soul Sorcerer, or Hexblade Warlock/Shadow Sorcerer?

Someone leak the background stuff plz

Nothing personal, kid

>was
>its STILL not out yet
>people treating their online theorycrafting wank like the end-all to all thoughts of balance

this
But some people do have it

And aura of vitality already exists

I want to play a spellcaster but I can't think of a character for it. I can come up with a good amount of martial character concepts, but whenever I try to think up a spellcaster I always can't figure out the personality behind the character.

Alrighty cheers.

Has anyone got leaks for the racial feats?

Tell me your opinion on this souped up version of witchbolt.

I'll be sure to grab that one user, thanks.
To use with my Cheesy Theurge Wiz

I'm simply REEing at the lack of Wizard subclasses

Is this a Wizard spell?
It seems like Necromancer got a minor buff with all these useful Necro spells in Xanthars

>persistent healing
Tank casters can work now.

Wizard Warlock Sorcerer

Which classes? It's competing with things like Wall of Force and Animate Objects.

A university proffessor who retired and spends his golden years trying to capture the sense of adventure he could never persue in his youth maybe?

What does Chaos Bolt do on a crit?

Well, picking which caster class would be a good place to start.

Scout might be good, but it's bland af

In my games, I'd say if any two d8s match, you get a bounce

Wizards got a ton in the PHB is their reasoning, I guess?

The same as every other crit effect. Double all damage dice.

Is it good really? Just picking up Expertise in Survival and the Mobile feat does the same thing as the entire class.

He probably means if it bounces with 2 dice resulting on the same number or 4

Go with a monster race, or one that isn't usually associated with magic, like Goliath. Have it so their tribe creates one sorcerer every 500 years or something, and your birth was meant to be a cause for great celebration, but because of your ties to magic you see the things in a different way than they ever could, and you're so fucking "woke" that you decide to leave the tribe and explore the greater world, causing a huge crisis amongst them.

Think of the most severely retarded Veeky Forums poster, add all the autism he has, and then act like a turbomunchkin with a Wizard supremacy complex.

>Literally the class with the most subclasses outside of the cleric
>Lack of subclasses
Wizardfags, everybody.

does arcane archer two shots per rest seem like enough? i would have thought it should scale like battlemaster

Arcane archers are literally worse battlemasters now. Lack of scaling is a big part of it, but their magic arrow feature got neutered to the point of borderline irrelevance - the GM should hand out a magic bow in time to deal with non-magical resistances anyway, making the feature literally pointless.

It looks like a cool alternative to the 'spell-less Ranger' archetype some people ask for.

I don't like the little notes from Xanathar that are peppered throughout the book. They seem too cutesy and lolrandum for a powerful tyrant crimelord.

It seems odd that even at 20th, you only get two shots. Unless I read it wrong when I skimmed past it.

>Cavalier
>Mounted Specialist
>Barely has any buffs for having a mount
>Most class features are usable without one
What the fuk

I mean they did the same with Volo in Volo's guide
Can't beholders have some fun too user, I mean the guy owns a goldfish he has to be pretty chill

I dunno, I guess its because I'm writing a campaign with a beholder at its centre at the moment that my view is being coloured, but I'm not really fond.

I'm usually the first to say "yeah but it's fun so fuck off" but here, I dunno. I'm not digging it.

Becausse mounts should be more of a choice for the players rather than a 'my class demands I use a mount!' 'well sorry you can't fit a mount in here'

I suppose they could have kept the ribbon feature but they probably didn't want to spur on mountfaggotry too much and wanted cavalier to seem just as fine unmounted

How about you wait until you know what the GM's world is like and what kind of situation you are starting out in, then make your character fit with that?

So sick of these fucking faggots bringing characters with oh-so-epic backstories to my games. I am so sick of getting a two paragraph email written at a middle-school writing level of how you killed X because X killed your family and now X's brother Y is hunting you down as revenge, and all your other edgy-McEdgelord crap that you pour into the game. It's not relevant to the campaign, and it will never be relevant to the campaign unless you decide to be enough of a narcissistic wanker to force it into the game when you are the only one in the group who gives a fuck about it. Or just wander off and start doing your own thing. God I hate it when these cocksuckers decide to lore-dump giant-ass backstories that have nothing to do with each other, then look at me expectantly. Write a fucking backstory that fits the campaign. And no, it is not my job to interest you in the adventure, it's your job to make a character that was interested in the adventure. Especially when you, as a player, asked for that type of adventure.

Stop asking for "what kind of character should I make" on Veeky Forums until you know what the campaign is going to be like. Because guess what? Your quirky "lol I used to be a professor" shit might not even fit the fucking campaign. Stop making assumptions about the setting. Not everything is your fucking kitchen sink homebrew where there are guns and gourmet chefs and all this other modern shit that you ham-handedly force into the game because you are too uncreative to come up with a character that isn't entirely composed of meaningless, vapid gimmicks.

>they didn't nerf favoured soul

The madmen

Newfag here, and I need some help. I want to be a mage, but I have concerns with the design of Sorcerers. Comparing them to Wizards, they're very similar, except that Sorcerers seem to get the short end of the stick in every regard. Metamagic sounds cool and all, but the subclasses, spell list, and spells known from Wizard just look flat out better. Is there something I'm missing or are Sorcerers just bad?

I get what you're saying, but you really need to calm down a tad there, sport.

...

I haven't played the games or read the media he appears in but to be a crime lord I would assume you have to be at least a little chill, I mean how else would you get people to join you

You're pretty much right.

The advantages of being sorcerer are mostly about twinning haste and buff spells and that's about it.

For a new player and especially in a new party, a sorcerer is just as good if not better than a wizard, but a wizard who knows what they're doing will blow a sorcerer out of the water.

Beholders break peoples will and make them serve them typically. I'm just having a bit of a case of NOT MUH I suppose

I trying to get a sense of scale so I can not fuck up the world I'm making. This is probably a rather esoteric question, but how long would it take someone on a wagon to get from Paris to Berlin (~1050 km) in a horse drawn wagon? The party's first major expedition is to escort a merchant from the starting city to one of the Dwarf Kingdoms and I'm wondering how long I should have the in game journey be to have realistic country sizes.

Pick spells that fit your subclass thematically, do not go Wild Magic under any circumstances, and remember that you can turn Spell Slots into Sorcery Points, and Sorcery Points into Spell Slots, and you'll do fine.

Well CHA is nice and draconic origin is pretty good even compared to wizard traditions, but yeah they're essentially "worse" wizards in terms of spell variety and spells known.

Wizard has always been better than sorcerer.
Sorcerer is probably tier 2 in this edition.
Fighter is tier 3 instead of tier 4 now, so that's an improvement. Same with barbarian. Ranger is now like tier 6, it sucks so fucking much.

>Newfag here

PLAY THE GAME.

It's almost impossible to make mechanically bad characters in 5e without significant effort.

Sure, you won't ever influence something with Portent, but the Wizard will never be able to Twin Lightning Bolt either.

Depends how you want to think about it. If you're thinking about which class is ultimately the best for combat or whatever, then fair enough. If you're thinking in terms of your character, then Sorcerers have a lot to offer in terms of flavour difference from Wizards. I'm partial to the Wild Magic table myself, though I'm sure that'll get me loads of stick from anons assuming I love everything and anything Lolrandom

Neither can you since Lightning Bolt can't be twinned.

Most may, but I'm not sure about Xanathar specifically, he's not exactly an eye tyrant, he's an elder orb I think, he may still be powerful but not the most powerful

And quickened spell is still limited by bonus action casting rules

Can we all agree Ceremony is the strangest spell we've got?

How would you fluff a crown paladin? I love the idea of being a tank, but getting your holy power from devotion to an earthly monarch makes no sense to me

Why? Because I am sick to death of people creating absolute shit-tier lore and trying to shoehorn it into my campaign setting that I spent actual time and effort developing? And I mean I spent time making stuff the players would enjoy. Descriptive shit. Roleplaying shit. Not 800 page history of the world, I barely even bothered with that shit because most people don't know it anyway and it should be left vague so it can be developed in future campaigns. But it's a goddamn normal fantasy setting, no you cannot have guns, you cannot be a french chef, you cannot be a spanish conquistador, just STOP.

I'm mostly thinking about the personality, I never add any accomplishments other than maybe a slight inclination at a talent and a goal they want to see accomplished eventually that would make them stop adventuring.

Also calm down nigga

Catnap:

>Fuck you DM, we are taking a short rest

Well yeah I agree that if you can't explain your characters backstory in about a sentence or so then you're doing it wrong, that lol quirky and/or edgelord characters are the worst and that you should at least try to make it fit within the DM's setting, but you can put that across without seeming like you're going full blown autist rage, you know.

You can still interrupt that rest though, right?

Yeah, but it takes away at least a little DM Fiat. If the DM unnecessarily interrupts this, you know for a 100% fact you have a garbage fire DM

What's strange in my opinion is how expensive it is. Minimum wage for a skilled laborer (a guild artisan or something) is 2 gold a day, but even a modest lifestyle costs 1 gold a day. Excluding other costs that probably aren't factored (taxes, going out extra to drink with friends, etc.) and the equivalent of an office worker is going to pay up to 2 month's wages for a funeral rite.

And what about the average unskilled laborer, like a farmer or a laborer who lives on 2 sp per day and pays 1 sp just to literally live and eat in a barn?

I mean, for modern concepts of weddings and funerals the costs are pretty reasonable, but I imagine these prices are pretty high for a normal religious service for the average person in fantasyland.

You can always have a shitty peasent wedding in the local mud puddle if you want

Hexblade and Blade Pact actually got a huge buff surprisingly.

Shadow Blade, Eldritch Smite, and Improved Pact Weapon combo super fucking amazingly, and do retarded damage.

This I imagine not every peasant is going to have a magical wedding to tie them together. Or a coming of age ceremony. Hell even funeral rites.

This firmly fits into nobility fluff.

Basically. It's 10 minutes long, as a DM i'd struggle to not give players a short rest benefit and interrupt it.

Obviously if they are like in the middle of a fight itd be hilarious and ridiculous, but in most dungeons 10 minutes is plenty of time to take a break.

I can't think of many places where, outside of direct combat or patrol areas, players can't take 10 whole minutes to themselves.

>Sorcerers can't learn Elemental Bane
WHY?!

>Chaos Bolt does 1d6 damage in addition to the 2d8 now
Maybe I'll actually take this when and if I play a sorcerer, now. It always looked fun but the damage was garbage.

Why does Xanathar have big rubbery dick sucking lips on the cover of this book, but look very different (and better) on the cover of the Monster Manual?

Let me introduce you to the wonders of Rope Trick

Would stick your dick into a beholder user.

Because thats what he looks like user

Catnap seems pretty weak.

Rope trick already exists if you need to gaurantee a short rest, and it keeps you pretty much entirely safe unless someone saw the exact point you escaped from and has any idea how to deal with the spell. It's a level 2 spell.

Catnap on the other hand is a level 3 spell, only affects up to 3 people (More with higher spell leve) and leaves people unconscious and vulnerable. The main way I can see this being used if ambushed is that one or two allies stay awake because they don't need a short rest and immediately start waking people up if danger approaches.
Of course, shortening a short rest down to 10 minutes is great for time pressure.

I suppose it's fair enough as a level 3 spell, maybe, but nothing crazy powerful.

>You're immune to all kinds of damage until the spell ends (10 minutes duration)
How do you deal with this?

My biggest issue with rope trick is it requires an Athletics check just to get in and climb the rope. Hilarious when the wizard that casts it can't even get in cause they can't pass the check to climb a 10ft rope (God help them if they say 'I put it 60ft up!'

Then there's the idea of spending a second level spell for a short rest. Just wait for Leomund's Tiny Hut and ritual cast it.
Is Catnap a ritual actually?

They only need some sort of a box to prop them up and as long as they're not time presured there's no way even with a -1 they'd take more than a minute to climb the rope, especially with someone helping.
Catnap isn't a ritual.

True that you could just use leomund's tiny hut as a ritual, though there is the issue that you will be spotted whereas with rope trick you'll remain completely hidden.

Trap them in a force cage for 10 minutes

Move them into a scenario in which they die the moment the spell ends.

Dispell level 9 should also work.

That's another Beholder.

What's the best starting feat for a hexblade tomelock?

>spur on
Oh user

Now that we can see the preview, I've began to trim down the wizard spell list and remove whatever I don't feel it's appropriate for them to have. So far I've removed:
>Toll the Dead, Dragon's Breath, Dawn, Illusory Dragon

Any suggestions? I haven't had the time to read through all the new spells yet.

How do i get my players interested in hexcrawl exploration? They seem to only care about combat.

No thats xanathar, I'm pretty sure

Why trim it down at all? For your setting?

I can't believe I was still operating on Pathfinder Rope Trick, where you can't pull the rope up.
The fact you can again in 5e makes it a bit better in my head, though it's still hard to justify the 2nd level slot.

Give them hooks to great treasures in the unknown. Then throw monsters outta the ass at them as they get closer.

The text inside says its Xanathar

Why are these inappropriate?
>Toll the Dead
Maybe restrict it to Necromancers but it makes sense for them to get it
>Dragon's Breath
It's just a direct damage spell right? Makes sense for Evokers
>Illusory Dragon
Powerful with Illusory Reality sure but why would an illusionist not be able to cast this?

For any campaigns I DM, and for the benefit of the other spellcasting classes. I.e., toll the dead is now only cleric/warlock, dawn should clearly be an exclusive cleric spell, and dragon's breath and illusory dragon are now exclusive sorcerer spells.
