It's a fine weapon for SWAT stuff but for big infantry battles you might want something more practical.

Customization and modularity. It's similar to the ACR and SCAR but able to turn into a bullpup.

Eh, depends on what kind and how it's delivered. Muhammad the child abuser and his magic taxi can blow up his car next to some troops in the middle east but he might not even kill anyone. MRAPs made IEDs much less effective than they use to be, and some for the updated M1A2 Sep 3s. Also penetrators do a better job of tank killing and bullets are more cost efficient for killing troops.

Robots are slow and have poor reaction time. Some kid with a rock could knock it over then beat it like a fucking Ewok. Laser guns are horribly inefficient thanks to physics, and in space they'd overheat like a mother fuckah.

That said, we do use robots. They're called drones.

We do, but they're experimental. Have the same problem all robots have.

Honestly, all said, the basic trooper does the job just fine. Anything more than a soldier can handle usually gets the 155s and air jockeys on the targets.

In addition, we have some UGVs that can literally be controlled by a X-Box controller.

Conceptually? Hell yes. Lightly-armed and armoured wall-crawling special forces designed for CQB.

Something like a PDW works well, because it's lightweight and you don't need range. Heavy body armour weighs you down, so they'd use smoke/gas and optics that could see through said smoke/gas.

I could see them being legitimately threatening opponents in something like an ops&tactics campaign (or GURPS I guess?) simply because of that high mobility. You secured all the doors? Well get fucked, they're climbing in via the skylights and walking along the ceiling.

Metal Gear is a really weird series in that there's a lot of attention paid to authentic details, such as realistic infantry tactics, weapons, uniforms, etc... which then goes completely out the window with psychics and vampires and sexy gimp commandos and cowboys killing bees by spinning their six guns. It's such a strange series tonally. I half expected to see a boss character using Sonny Puzikas' "Blooming Death" technique as a special attack.

As alpha strike or covert operatives that aren't meant to get shot at, sure.
As bulk force troopers, you're going to want to have some kind of armor so that someone's 9mm doesn't poke a hole in their lung. Super soldiers are expensive as fuck and 20 pounds of kevlar and plating could help you keep a lot more of them.

This is intentional, and honestly not that unusual in Japanese franchises. See Metal Gear's alternate company equivalent: Resident Evil.

Metal Gear as a franchise is goofy because the author wants to write something depressing, but depressing doesn't sell action games. The lesser games in the series get the balance wrong.

I like the fact that Metal Gear is a mecha series that really doesn't have anything to do with the mechas themselves. You're not an angsty teenager who has to pilot one of those things against other such things, you're actively trying to stop anyone from piloting them.

The B&B unit was a big letdown. All that potential wasted in an after action report from Drebin. Concept was fine, but they were very one note. None of the personality you'd saw in Foxhound or Dead Cell. Cobra had some weak points, like Pain and Fear, but The End and Sorrow were memorable.
