Storytime! I’ve posted this before but want to share it again. Not by any means a fine moment of GMing by the end of it but...
Okay, fine. Here's the story:
>Group is traveling for different reasons to acquire special item blah >Problem player is playing a pretentious wizard with a god awful accent >whatever.dealwithit >from the start of the first session he is threatening other players and is openly hostile to those who have been assigned to protect him >argues in circles with the ranger, who is supposed to be guiding the group to swamp with magical item, about who can track better because he succeeded on a perception roll that the ranger failed >argues with the knight who has been assigned to protect said wizard for the reason that, as best as I can figure out, he ALSO has a shitty accent >adventure proceeds and wizard is busy doing stupid shit cont.

Slowed by bad rolls from the ranger >wizard is reminding him how useless he is >nonmagicgimp.haha >reach strange tower ruin hideout of the bandits >wizard argues for 1 hour about going down into it when rest of party wants to move on; eventually starts arguing in circles with himself ooc >party caves and proceeds down into tower >eventually skelly battle; group nearly tpks on bad rolls >party is glad to be alive, oh but not Mr Wizard! >argues and yells at group some more His tirade has literally cost the night; 6 hours to track 4 people, walk down a staircase, fight 2 skeletons, and heal up from the battle. Have a serious talk with him about table etiquette; doesn't even try the "it's just the character" meme, says he'll do better next game. Cont.

Oath of Conquest capstone was a mistake. Paladins already were better fighters than fighters proper, now what's even the point of rolling fighter knowing that pally gets all dat healing, smiting, spells, auras and now even extra attack 2 and improved critical, with resistance to all damage on top. Oh, I guess barbarians got cucked as well with that last bit, so it isn't as bad huh?

Rate my next character Veeky Forums Hill Dwarf Moon Druid with the new racial feat from XGtE:
Dwarven Fortitude Prerequisite: Dwarf Increase your Constitution score by 1, to a maximum of 20. Whenever you take the Dodge action in combat, you can spend one Hit Die to heal yourself. Roll the die, add your Constitution modifier, and regain a number of hit points equal to the total (minimum of 1).
Dodging in wild shape to spend wild shape hit die (1d10+3 as a cave bear up to 4 times) along with poison resistance and ONE EXTRA MAX HP. Once I get to casting 4th level spells I plan on using the new XGtE spell Guardian of Nature before wildshaping to become an even BEASTLIER bear with 10 extra walking speed, advantage on STR based attacks, and extra 1d6 force damage on attacks.
Jordan Long
seems like a solid place to leave the session. >Cleric is cleaning up and reviving people in town. >Rogue and Ranger are tracking a wizard down >Wizard is fleeing the scene You could have 2 PC's have a chase to get to the wizard and the Cleric to rally some thugs that he revives to take Wizard down. Now its a 3-way battle between (Ranger+Rogue) vs (Wizard) vs (Cleric+Thugs) and have the winners gain a knighthood from the king or something.
Lucas Reyes
nice, consider finding a spell that lets you deal aura damage while you're dodging like spirit guardians or flaming sphere.

To be fair, it was 3am, the cleric was using cure light wounds on the dead commoners, wizard player was on the verge of tears, and rogue + ranger players were about to assault the wizard player. The only player left out of the story was the sorcerer who played up to this point only to hang out and roll to hit with his “Gandalf stick”.
So this won’t be in the book, only on the site/app?

Seems that way, at least for now.

Hoping for a bit of advice, if I might. One of my players wants to be a Goliath Fighter in our upcoming campaign, which I think is a fine idea, and has his eye on swinging a big fucking maul around. He's planning on focusing on Strength as his primary attribute, which should probably gove him a 17 with the array and all, and is going Great Weapon Fighting for his fighting style, because of course he is with this plan. I have nothing but support for this idea, and think it'll be awesome.
The thing is, he asked me today if there'd be any way he could somehow get a customized maul, specifically designed to take advantage of his huge strength. I'm not sure if 5e has rules in place for such customization, and am not entirely sure how I'd go about making shit up for that myself. I was thinking, at least for how he'd -get- the bloody thing, of letting him run into a blacksmith willing to craft it for him for, say, somewhere around 2-5x normal price or so, but beyond some sort of half-formed idea of '+1 nonmagical bonus to damage, minimum STR score of blah', I'm not sure what specifically to use for statting the maul out.
Any suggestions, anons?
Joshua Sullivan
No mechanical benefit at first other than a unique design. Instead it is a dormant magical weapon that awaken at certain level.
Charles Edwards
Just treat it like a magic item and have him find it. Even create a specific adventure for him to get it, maybe a lost goliath temple or something.
Treat it as a +1 maul if STR is over X, where X is his strength. Heck, you could tier it as well. If you figure by the next time he gets a strength boost he should be ready for a +2 weapon you can say that with the increased strength it takes greater advantage and acts as +2 etc.
Dylan Foster
And it only costs a reaction and it gives a stat boost and it gives AC
Ethan Thomas
"Don't worry my friends. *I* am your shield!"

Would it be broken to make maul that gives weaker version of GWM's -5/+10? Maybe in form of -prof/+2*prof? Obviously, not stacking with GWM itself.
Bentley Murphy
No wonder this isn't in the book, this is homebrew-tier (Albeit good homebrew, it's not actually all that terrible).

A hexblade's eldritch blast deals
1d10+1d6+CHA+Proficiency, gaining another beam at higher levels (the beams keep the additional modifiers). Which means, a cantrip deals on average: 16//34/54/80 damage
Double that if you go sorlock
Michael Bailey
Not to mention that half-cover is really good against the things that DMs usually use to balance out people who focus on melee.
Bunch of archers firing as you approach? +2 AC until you've closed the gap
Fireball coming at you and your buddies? +2 on that Dex save to not get utterly annihilated.
Josiah Gray
Fucking Hexblade, why did they make it all damage instead of Weapon attacks? Weapon attacks would have made Bladelock viable without making Hexblade the overwhelming better patron.

Play a game where everybody gets a unique ability Ability is to add 'explosion' spell Each spell slot can either be used to reduce cast time, increase damage, increase radius or add additional effects Downside is you cannot cast any other spells, it uses all your spell slots and it has a longer than one action cast time
Dylan Butler
It doesn't work like that, you only add int to each if it's against a different target.
Adrian Garcia
>instead of recharging an ability on a long rest, you may instead take a level of exhaustion to recharge an ability instantly.

Magic missile is an area of effect spell like fireball no matter how it's cast, much like how eldritch blast is a multi-target spell from level 5 onwards even if you attack the same target multiple times.
I guess even today some people haven't heard of this, which is what I wanted to test.
Mason Taylor
You add Int to the damage roll, you only roll damage once for Magic Missile and each dart does that much damage.
Parker Edwards
It's a homebrew feat though. It's listed in homebrew section in beyond.
Joshua Evans
>what’s the point of rolling fighter Nobody gets to level 20, and even for the rare occasion they do, this isn’t an MMO where you spend the vast majority of the game at the level cap.

Because Tomelock hexblade and Chainlock Hexblade exist.
Alexander Peterson
That's funny because I had an argument about this exact topic last year. The other people refuse to believe it even with sageadvice link ("LOL DEV CAN MAKE RULE MISTAKE!!!").
>Magic missile is an area of effect spell like fireball No it isn't, its a target spell. It doesn't affect an area.
Jeremiah Lewis
You’d have to cite a source to me for that, because the spell just reads that a dart deals 1d4+1 damage to its target, and nowhere else in the game do you roll once for multiple different things damaging a target, whether that’s Scorching Ray, Eldritch Blast, or Weapon attacks.
Austin Adams
>nowhere else in the game do you roll once for multiple different things You only roll multiple damage rolls for different attack rolls
>Each weapon, spell, and harmful monster ability specifies the damage it deals. You roll the damage die or dice, add any modifiers, and apply the damage to your target. Magic weapons, special abilities, and other factors can grant a bonus to damage. With a penalty, it is possible to deal 0 damage, but never negative damage.
>When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifier—the same modifier used for the attack roll—to the damage. A spell tells you which dice to roll for damage and whether to add any modifiers.
>If a spell or other effect deals damage to more than one target at the same time, roll the damage once for all of them. For example, when a wizard casts fireball or a cleric casts flame strike, the spell’s damage is rolled once for all creatures caught in the blast.
Xavier Lopez
What Xanathar subclasses do you think will see the most play and which won't see any?
Henry Diaz
MAKING AN ATTACK >Whether you’re striking with a melee weapon, firing a weapon at range, or making an attack roll as part of a spell, an attack has a simple structure.
>Choose a target. Pick a target within your attack’s range: a creature, an object, or a location.
>Determine modifiers. The GM determines whether the target has cover and whether you have advantage or disadvantage against the target. In addition, spells, special abilities, and other effects can apply penalties or bonuses to your attack roll.
>Resolve the attack. You make the attack roll. On a hit, you roll damage, unless the particular attack has rules that specify otherwise. Some attacks cause special effects in addition to or instead of damage.
>If there’s ever any question whether something you’re doing counts as an attack, the rule is simple: IF YOU’RE MAKING AN ATTACK ROLL, YOU’RE MAKING AN ATTACK.
Levi Howard
So does that mean EB+AB is 4d10+4(cha) or 4d10+cha?
So congrats on your 10 damage area blast, I guess.
Mason Scott
Yeah, but they're really good memes.
Cameron Baker
tl;dr Are you making attack rolls? Roll damage for each attack You aren't? Then roll damage once
Mearls is stating his house rule, not RAW
>Grow up. I post a source for everything I said, you literally have no argument
Robert Robinson
Okay, wait, now you're all confusing me about how Magic Missile functions. I thought it was straightforward.
>You create three glowing darts of magical force. Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range. A dart deals 1d4+1 force damage to its target. The darts all strike simultaneously and you can direct them to hit one creature or several
So my reading of this was you can:
>3d4+3 damage to one creature >2d4+2 damage to one creature and 1d4+1 to another creatures >1d4+1 damage to each of three creatures
With additional missiles adding additional d4s that could each be independently targeted.
THEN the Evocation 10th level ability lets you add +INT to ONE missile, making it (probably by that point) 1d4+6 instead of 1d4+1; while the other missiles remain 1d4+1.
Was I wrong?
Blake Torres
If I'm going full hexblade sorlock, what should be my other invocation aside from AB?
Elijah Watson
>Was I wrong? Yes, it's 1d4+1 regardless of the number of targets
