THIS TIME ON SONG OF SWORDS New Ballad version is out, has a new intro.
Song of Swords is a a tabletop RPG centered around realistic medieval fightan' with a ludicrous variety of weapons and fighting styles, centered around a dice pool system. It's currently in beta, and can be used for both fantasy and historical games. The Kickstarter was nearly 300% funded, and we're on the fast track to kicking ass baby.
Call of the Void: Ballad of the Laser Whales is a pulpy sci-fi tabletop RPG about fighting space-nazis and hunting giant whales with harpoons made out of the moon. Its combat system is more modern, based in the early 20th century, but can probably handle combat up to the present day.

I like the vibe of combat, but man is it borring to write down armor, like playing with full plate makes charachter creation so long you don't want to show it to new players.

I like to condense things. So if I'm actually playing someone in full plate, I'll just note their helmet and write Full Body - 8/7/6 and the total weight.
Because I'm a huge weapon autist, people also sometimes just write down a general description of what they're wearing, and consult me to ask what would be on the location hit.

You don't really hold it under your arm. The Japanese basically got the style of matchlock that was commonly used by Portugal at the time, and thus used that as the base for all the variations they made. (And yes, there were variations)

The Japanese actually did bother with accuracy, at least some of the time. They bothered to put front and rear sights on their muskets, which Europeans didn't do until later. You can see it here

This is true, though I wouldn't call it precision aiming per se. Just a better aid to presentation at the foe.
The Japanese also had a crude but apparently fairly effective means of ranging volley fire by use of various lengths of string tied to the barrel and the shooter's waist, visible in this pic that I thought was on my computer but apparently not this one.
Huh, that's pretty interesting. I haven't heard of that one before. So are there knots on the string, to allow it to be tightened or adjusted in some way?

I think they're just measured lengths, possibly with adjustment knots. Not totally precise by any measure, but enough to help your group find a range at night. Probably combined with ranging out the field, too.

Are the ships more traditional with decks or are they like submarines? The book isn't clear. It says that hull breaches can be bad news but then harpoons and carrier ships are a thing

They're traditional ships. You can breathe in space. Hull breaches are a bad thing because the parts that make the ship fly spew poison gasses if broken, and gasses from the Underspace can get kicked up during battles.

What's the difference between a shamshir and a kilij?

The Turkish style are kilij, the Persian ones shamshirs. The various in between, mixes and whatnot (which can happily include features and/or components from India as well) are a bit of a bother.
The bulbous "pommel" there tends to point to Turkey, as does the presence of a yelman, and I think the ridged styling of the guard. For an even more typical kilij go for a shorter, broader blade with a lot of curvature just before the yelman, and possibly a T-spine between there and the hilt.
The archetypical shamshir looks something like this. No yelman, quite even curvature, less going on with the guard, and the grip simply being bent and covered with an end cap instead of the bulbous pommel.

I think it's just a way of quickly moving from out of combat explicitly into a grappling choke. Basically a specialized Clinch to skip the middle man and jump straight to squeezing the life out of someone.
Or, possibly, to garrote someone.

They're implied to be a weird mixture of historical warships from multiple eras. Some people still have ships that look like they could've been designed in the 19th century, and sail power is still popular because fuel is a bastard in the void.
One thing I'd like to have clarified is what the distances involved look like. How big is the Void, actually?
