Well, thats the problem when the GM and the player have different expectations for the game. Although I doubt this situation ever happened.
Anyway, if the players are mature enough to handle it, this kind of plot point might lead to character development for the PC, for example, so when down the line he meets another woman he knows the importance of taking care of her or he needs to overcome his trauma or whatever. Then again, this is the kind of thing where you have to know your players if you want to pull it off.
It's similar to having a player character raped or tortured, some players might be okay with that, some might not be.
