Gonna split some souls like I split some legs edition.
>What is /awg/? A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or people's homebrew wargames. /hwg/ doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to very specific games, so this thread isn't tied to a game, or a genre, lets talk about fun wargames.
Any scale, any genre, any company, any minis. Skirmishers welcome. Rules designers welcome.
>Examples of games that qualify en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_miniature_wargames Grimdark Future, Age of Fantasy, Mighty Armies, Dragon Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals, Frostgrave, Hordes of the Things, Songs of Blades and Heroes, Freebooter's Fate, Dark Age, LotR and anything that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread (gorkamundheim).
I'm really tempted by Wyrd's sale. They announced the Brotherhood of the Rat alt sculpts, though they haven't really shown off pics other than tiny ones in the newsletter, and the price it a little high, going to cost $20 more than what the standard gives, on top of the $90 for the alt Haemlin box.
But fuck, the alt Rat King is a Cat Princess, a fat Persian sitting on a pedestal and pillow.
Henry Ward
Sorry, just looked it up. Its $30 more, not $20.
Charles Howard
bow down to akkad the concerned
Cooper Rogers
>$30 >On top of the $90 the box usually costs Ouch, dude.
There's a local shop near me doing some sales, but fuck if I'm going there at 6am to get something that I'll probably never really use.
Zachary Roberts
So, I just bought Quadrant 13 by Too Fat Lardies for my plan of Sci-fi Cold War.
Anyone played it? It looks pretty good, but I'm wondering exactly how big a game you really want to be playing with it.
The book recommends a reinforced company, of 2-5 platoons of 2-5 squads each at a 1 man to one figure scale.
So for getting to grips with it I'm thinking the following forces:
NATO:
3 Infantry Platoons of 2 rifle squads and 1 support weapon section (either ATGMs, unguided AT weapons, mortars or MMGs) CHQ MBT platoon (Command tank and 2 tanks) 2 Gunships Fighter-bomber 3 Mechs
WarPac:
2 Motorised Infantry platoons (3 rifle squads each, plus 1 MMG squad and 1 ATGM squad each), mounted in BMPs 2 platoons of 3 mechs 1 platoon of 4 MBTs.
That's 72 soviet infantry vs 66 NATO infantry, and some visually distinctive vehicles (APCs for the soviets and more stuff without CHEERS! spam vs NATO going all in on air support).
It can also mostly be made from two TY starter sets and some infantry boxes, plus mechs.
Austin Gutierrez
Its going to cost $160 total for an alt Haemlin crew, but damn if they are sweet models.
I think I'm just going to pick up the holiday Rasputina set, since that's at least a faction I play.
Colton Scott
Grabbed a few tanks for the TANKS! game. Great game to get newbies interested and there are some great strategies for building different army groups.
Dylan Jackson
Are Akkad metal and the upcoming goblins are different in style? I mean, if I buy the plastic set, will I be able to build him?
Carson Foster
Akkad is a metal miniature, you can get him with any of the goblin pre-orders
Jason Gomez
Reminds me of the Plague Doctor in Darkest Dungeon
(from kickstarter)
Joshua James
I'd rather bow to Aelflin Splitlip with a headswap, or Urist Schnauzevoll von Hammern, desu
Jordan Nguyen
don't forget that the elf feather is optional!
Chase Turner
I can give it to Urist then. Excellent!
Hunter Hernandez
it's also the design model for the elves, like akkad is for he goblins, so a lot of stuff could be subject to change
Ryder Morris
I'm mostly fine with the model. I really dislike the face and I'm not too hot on the sword and shield, but all three of those are very easily replaced. Everything else looks excellent to me, especially those gorgeous hands and boots. I'm just hypercritical when it comes to faces compared to most people, which is why most of my models wear face covering helmets.
Zachary Cook
i've always been bothered by painting faces because i can never do good eyes without them looking like retards, that's why orc/goblin models are good because you can just paint them red
one thing i've been thinking of was great orcs, i'm wondering will north star do them themselves or will i buy the old harlequin lord of the rings stuff
James Torres
Does anyone on here use Tabletop Simulator? I am interested in using it to playtest the game system (Warstack) I have been working on.
Nicholas Hall
I'm in the same boat, but I just keep on struggling and slowly I can see improvements.
Nicholas Walker
i've improved quite a lot from my first ever model but i still can't get eyes right
Brody Bailey
Anyone knows if pendraken does any sort of black friday or xmas sale? Really eyeing those warband army packs they have.
Jack Ward
Are there any fantasy wargames with rules for air warfare? I really want to see giant eagle fighters take down a bomber dragon.
Owen King
The X-wing game also exists as Star Trek game and as a D&D version where you have Dragons instead of spaceships. Can't remember the name anymore though.
Levi Hernandez
>I totally lost the last thread number, fuck.
Joseph Morales
Just yesterday the Kickstarter for Panzerfäuste's dogfight game finished successfully. That's WWII fantasy, with British Orcs atop dragons and German Dwarves atop birds of prey, in case you weren't aware. But who knows how long it might take.
It doesn't actually use the rules from Attack Vector: Tactical or Birds of Prey, just the physical means of holding the pieces - this should mean you won't be handling AVID bearings.
Daniel Martin
These are something but I'll have to look them more closely.
Hudson Anderson
You could fit a finger down the lumen of that needle. Ridiculous. Cool mini though.
I just can't fuck with those models being twice or more as expensive. Bridge too far.
I can't quite bring myself to drop $25 bux on single miniatures either, even though I want Miss Step and a couple of others.
Trade shows have ruined me by exposing me to convenience-buying of small company good metal miniatures for $4 each...
And I'm a Bong, so I get double-boned on import taxess and shipping.
Hunter Hall
Do you need to? I tend towards darker schemes (lazy shit) anyway, but I usually just drop a suitabel ink into the socket and let it do the work for me.
Leo Lopez
Hey guys, lurker here.
Yesterday, I saw a thread about a guy who wanted to find an easy game for him and his girlfriend and blah blah... Long story short, some guy posted "Dragon Rampant" from Osprey Wargames and I wanted to know if some kind user could provide more of these glorious books !
I'm tremendously interested by "Ronin".
In return, here is the "Dragon Rampant" one.
Anthony Fisher
Pretty sure a good portion of them should be in the trove, including hidden amongst the /hwg/ links
Leo Gutierrez
Indeed ! I found Lion Rampant, Of Gods and Mortals and Dux Bellorum.
Sorry for the stupid question (and lack of research)
Thanks man
Alexander Phillips
I don't even bother with the eyes. Skin color, wash, done. When I'm playing a game nobody notices if yhe eyes are painted or not anyway so I just don't even stress about it (unless they have helmets or something where I can just quickly dot them with a single color like I did my Venusian Rangers).
Thank you!
I still think Canevale has the best plague doctor models on the market.
Aaron James
Nice dudes, I'm pretty sure I've seen pdf rules for Mantic's systems. Can someone point in the right direction pleae?
Christian Sanders
Which one are you searching for specifically?
Isaac Hall
Myself Kings of War. Especially the Destiny of Kings book as I want to scratch my Mighty Empires itch.
Logan Stewart
i love washing the miniatures, specially applying rust effects and shit to a miniature
i've always kept the the belief that tiny details shouldn't be bothered with, specially with table top quality
Jeremiah Young
>AVID bearings for your dragons
MATH WIZARDS, GO
Hudson Sanchez
>wanna get some bushido minis >get some kage kaze and some prefecture so I can into tenchu the wargame >no us distributor >no good sales >secondhand market nonexistent
time2sudoku
Jordan Flores
>gremlins get nothing Fucking shit balls.
Christopher Baker
Yeah, it's a bit excessive, even for a grimdark fantasy I agree, but Carnevale has more of a baroque style
Jaxon Peterson
>Canevale I keep forgetting they're a thing. I really do love their models.
Dylan Morris
I might be in for alt nico. I thought getting my hands on that model was a futile effort. That and the cats and the alt raspy and the...damn that plastic adds up fast.
If they start selling this stuff at every special time of the year or whatever, or hell just black friday, I'm all for it. Lowers the prices of the second hand market to more acceptable levels. Maybe.
James Brown
I asked my flgs about Bushido. Apparently they are a pain in the dick to get hold of in small quantities, so it would need a guaranteed significant buy-in by at least four or five players, with an eye towards actively building a playing scene, to be worth their time/money/risk. I suspect the same is true for many smaller stores, which holds back development of communities, with cyclical effect.
Have you considered one of the six available real factions?
>[Regular Malifaux LE sales] Lowers the prices of the second hand market to more acceptable levels. Maybe. This is my hope, certainly.
It's a shame those backboard things appear to be part of the mini, they aren't great-looking alongside the rest of the model.
Benjamin Brown
Attack Wing. The D&D version is dead, though.
They've been doing it for the last couple years or so, Gencon and Black Friday are their big ones and they have been offering the full LE line.
Chase Walker
You can get Bushido on Noble Knight Games, although I can't say how great their stock is right now.
I think most small games suffer that, sadly. They can't get big U.S. distribution which means that for shopa to get them they need to basically go direct order which costs a shit ton because of a number of factors. It really sucks as most of those smaller games are wicked fun, but the inability to get them cripples any chance they have of building up a decent sized community, especially in countries overseas.
Elijah Davis
I was reading about how important it is having an organizer in the area pouring energy into these smaller known games. I mean, I always knew it was nice to have people like that, but it wasn't until lately that I realized how much work they can actually get done promoting things just by being visible.
Really sucks those magic shitters ruined most demo for swag set ups. I really enjoyed teaching people stuff, and I got neat shit for it too.
Easton Allen
Has Malifaux fallen to a sub-topic in awg? I only ever used their miniatures for other games, but still sad to see potential decrease in players.
Can't wait for impending weeb minis.
Samuel Roberts
>flgs Not even trolling, but I don't see the need for them anymore. Have been playing at community centers, libraries, and churches for the past couple years through online organization. It's cleaner, quieter, easier to filter participants, most of all free, and our armies are significantly cheaper.
Anthony Ortiz
>large open indoor space with AC >Pay a monthly fee >Get a points card like they do at some kids arcades >club card can be used at vending machines to get various hobby supplies >Cameras around specific important points like said machines to track down thieves >Club card also has persons info, so no clean escape for said thieves if caught >You want to advertise something? Put up posters and sign up sheets. >Use social media to stay in touch
It would be glorious, but I just don't ever see it happening. You couldn't make it entirely unmanned but you could get pretty damn close.
Juan Parker
I couldn't bring myself to support the landed gentry so thoroughly.
Asher Parker
>Really sucks those magic shitters ruined most demo for swag set ups Story time or a general comment on something that went over my head?
Gabriel Allen
Small brush, steady hand, and a better flesh tone can help a lot, as the best approach to eyes is to overpaint then correct with eyelids and/or eyebrows. You can be doing that wash up from white base, though. You have to actually use properly opaque paint.
Robert Baker
*can't*
Logan Robinson
The game is selling more than it ever has. It's more like there isn't enough to sustain discussion on Veeky Forums.
Brody Foster
I nearly had demo events set for Dropzone at my LGS last year, but then the shop’s wargaming coordinator moved away and was replaced by a guy who spends all of his time on the clock disappearing into the back to paint his own models. The only other events guy who works there eats, shits, and breathes Magic and doesn’t spare time for anything else. Suffice it to say that 40k and Magic are the only things that get played there anymore, and even 40k is starting to drift off into player-operated public spaces because Mr. Paints doesn’t seem to give a shit about his job description.
Xavier Sanders
Essentially, people who volunteered for mtg started whining about how awful it was working for wizards at some big tournament, and instead of just leaving they said it they were working without pay, and the gubment got involved or some such. So now it made being a volunteer a whole lot messier and companies shy away from it now. Just look at volunteer gigs at cons, they give you specific hours and tell you how much they're going to pay you, instead of you doing it because you like it and getting free stuff on the side.
...however looks like my info is a few months out of date.
Looks like the bullshit class action lawsuit got thrown out the window. However, I've still noticed companies are much more hesitant about demo stuff now. I'm pretty sure the class action stuff was part of why PP killed pressganging, and why Knight Models seems to have all but abandoned the sons of batman program. I would say it might have something to do with steamforged not giving two shits about guild ball pundits (?) now but a former one told me that's because after they made dark souls they simply stopped caring much about the GB gaming scene.
Chase Davis
I think, especially for smaller companies, it's also thebhesitation of giving stuff away for free, you know? Although I guess they aren't obligated to (I'll demo games because I like them, and if I can get people playing that's generally reward enough for me), but most people expect aomething for their time. And if it's not money then they'll want free models and shit.
When I did promotions for Rackham I got all sorts of models for free, which was great at the time but I almost felt bad about after they went under.
Cooper Parker
Your LGS should look into Golden Distribution for Bushido models.
Jose Cooper
No one?
Thomas Sanders
It morphs in and out of /awg/, but whether or not there is a constant general or discussion on Veeky Forums reflects game health in no way whatsoever. People tend to vastly overestimate the importance of Veeky Forums and Veeky Forums as a whole when even 40kg has significantly less unique posters than even a place like Dakka, not to mention shit like Reddit or Facebook where vast majority congregates.
Grayson Miller
>Reddit >Facebook But those places are full of normies! They can't possibly be where true neckbeard go to congregate.
Ethan Ramirez
Where are the best deals on minis? I have found some, but they were... underwhelming.
Zachary Price
Sorry, should have been more specific. Medieval, dark ages, fantasy and sci-fi (notwarhammer wink wink)
Jace Moore
28mm scale too
Carson Kelly
>Where are the best deals on minis? do you mean in general or right now? You just missed the HF Halloween sale, they do that once a year with 20% off. Northstar also do preorders for their Oathmark minis now. At 30 minis per box with the discounts they give it should be pretty easy to make an army with those. >Medieval, dark ages, fantasy and sci-fi (notwarhammer wink wink) As I mentioned Oathmark atm. In general companies that do plastic kits. Perry, Fireforge, Warlord, Gripping Beast for historicals and Mantic for fantasy and sci-fi stuff.
Anthony Robinson
Specialist game FB groups for niche games are a strange and curious culture
>random shitposting of terrible image macros and demotivators >pedantic rules arguments by people who can't read (like "d6-2 is different to rolling a d6 and ignoring results of 5+") >Endless heated arguments about balance that always boil down to the Veeky Forums equivalent of "works on my machine lol" - "PLAY THE SCENARIO"/"WAR ISN'T FAIR SUN TZU LOL"/"I DON'T THINK IT'S OP BECAUSE I FIELD (stupid hard counter skew list)" >Loads of photos of piles of unpainted models captioned "hope the wife doesn't see this xD" >Very rarely a battle report/really well painted army >random picture captioned "inspirational..."
Luke Campbell
Thank you kindly, user. I suck, I lose all the good deals and sales.
Robert Adams
Hey? /awg/, whats toyr opinion on Saderspire and Aristeia? Please do not send me to aos and infinity threads, i need some honest opinion. Also, need some opinions and description on Deadzone/Beyond the gates of antares.
Hunter Taylor
Are the Warpath rules still a mess? Skimming their forums and it seems to be dead and a bunch of questions still, so it seems like "yes", but maybe there's stuff elsewhere that I missed?
Leo Peterson
Prodos shitcanned their Crusader program, too. Now it's store owners ask for a tournament/demo pack and any crusader team members then organise with them for events. Which no one here does, because no one gives a shit or knows they exist. Being an /awg/ gamer is suffering.
Ryan Ortiz
Oldhammer and Dark Age of Sigmar/Inq28 are quite good.
Oldhammer has a lot of battle report (well... one every two days, at least) and Inq28/Ao28 have a lot of conversion. Nothing extraordinary, just a relaxing place
Gabriel Martinez
>Also, need some opinions and description on Beyond the gates of antares What do you want to know? I bought some minis a while ago and I like them. Back when they first announced the game, they pitched it as hard sci-fi which is wrong. It's a space opera setting, but has a few sinister undertones in the background.
Warlord is currently working on a community page for the game, called Nexus. It was supposed to go live last friday I think but they had some technical issues with the page so it got delayed. In any case if you want to know more about the game you should keep an eye out for that.
In the meantime the warlord page has some short stories and there is a podcast you can listen to that has some info on each faction.
Nathaniel Davis
There's something comfy about them, they're like a window into the retro internet.
Levi Collins
On the other hand adepticon sign ups are looking a little dire. Infinity, batman, arena rex, and guild ball all have their main events sold out with 30-48 players. Malifaux is sitting at 11. Last time I played in the main event a couple of years back there were 60+ players. There are definate signs of rot, at least here in the US.
Nathaniel Peterson
Sounds a bit like the crustiest of oldfags that left Veeky Forums long, long ago, aged up and married.
Blake Green
It's been like thee days since Adepticon sign ups open. As someone who plays in the Chicago meta I can say that tournaments are as popular as they ever have been.
Kayden Reyes
That's funny you say that, because the groups I'm part of are generally pretty relaxed (Kings of War fanatics, Deadzone fanatics, Heavy Gear Blitz being the three that aren't localized to my area).
But yeah, I imagine some are just garbage. I don't foloow any I'd ths faction specific pages for KoW because part of be is sure they're just wankery.
Gabriel Cruz
>Weeb minis Damn they look good. Are they from the CMoN boardgame?
>Has Malifaux fallen to a sub-topic in awg? I think only because there are other, vastly better, places to discuss it in a positive light, and the community isn't quite big enough to sustain a continuous gripe-fest without resorting to too-obviously uninformed opinions. I start a /mfg/ periodocally, I just haven't done so for a month or tow.
>Adepticon I remember hearing grumbling about that tournament last year, but can't remmebr the specifics. Either way, ity seems like certain leading lights of the scene are trying to force it down a slightly WAACfag Warmahordes route, and most of the Malifaux scene just isn't that into that - hence the low sign-ups for a needlessly gruelling tournament.
Christopher Hernandez
You have to find those people to play with in the first place. Having a centre for the community to revolve around gives any game exposure to morepeople, meaning you can collar folks that are into it. Admittedly, you might have to do some soft gatekeeping, but I think that's worth it to stand a chance of finding people that will actually play these otherwise-uneard of games.
Without wanting to be argumentative, how would you go about getting into Bushido (for example) if you didn't already know people that wanted to play it, and the people you currently play with don't want to buy into a new system?
>I'm pretty sure the class action stuff was part of why PP killed pressganging, They said as much officially, didn't they? I don't see why they can't trim these programs back to a lower-stakes affair - we'll provide some organisational assistance at our end that lets you set up and advertise events more easily at your end.
>Veeky Forums aged up and married. Yup, that's why it's so comfy - it's the good old days, but people have grown out of the more venomous mindless trolling.
Caleb Rivera
I know its early, but is shows what people are excited to play and what they are not.
That said, I do think trying to cram 5 games into a single day hurts alot, too.
Oliver Nelson
>there are other, vastly better, places to discuss it in a positive light Such as? Please don't say facebook, I hate joining facebook groups
Matthew Smith
I know, but you can't argue with the footfall. And the forums are a bit of a cesspit, but there are more than fifty posters.
It just doesn't seem to have a huge internet presence, oddly, despite it's dedicated and growing (anecdotal) playerbase.
Jason Torres
So what groups are decent for it then?
Brayden Lee
A game I'd like to recommend is StarGrunt II a platoon level sci Fi war game. My group plays it in 15mm instead of 28mm and it still works fine. It's one of the most "grounded" sci Fi games out there. Still plenty of lazers and power armour but potrayed like cold war tech in space. Soldiers aren't supermen just poor bloody infantry with plasma guns. The morale system is fantastic, deciding fights more than lethality (depending on the mission, it's scalable relative to "mission priority"). Can't recommend it enough if you have a group who's willing to commit. Will post a batrep if there's interest.
Austin Rodriguez
Sure, go ahead. I'm curious. I haven't been able to find a pdf and I'm really reluctant to buy into games I know nothing about.
Brandon Price
The Wyrd forums and A Wyrd Place are the big ones.
Leo Harris
Totally forgot the mention the rules are free at ground zero games. Bat rep to follow.
pic is a shitty phone pic of my army
Eli Evans
Those proportions make me long for a wargame form of advance wars, and no I'm not talking about rivet wars
Luis King
Some have small and dedicated fanbases sure, but a lot of that comes from some of these games having very few events. I find it hard to claim that Batman and Arena Rex are more popular than Malifaux.
Isaac Campbell
I really like their little mans as well. Picked a bunch of assorted non-combat squads up a few months ago. Well proportioned and nice sculpts, but still adorable.
Gavin Martinez
shit, looks like I lost the pics of the actual game, anyway here's the write up. For context my space east Germany is invading a planet and the space UN has intervened. A7V's are my VTOL transports, think of them as flying BMP's.
After Action Report June 12th 2371 Lieutenant Kubilus Commanding 204th Air Mobile Battalion, Company A, 2nd Platoon
Orders: Recon Crossroads and surrounding area, capture if practicable.
Report: Lift off from FOB Diamond at 2:30 PM. Arrived in AO at 3:42. Landing was contested. My A7V-E was hit by rocket fire shortly before touchdown. The pilot, Chief Warrant Officer Lutkis and Private Degutis were killed instantly. We disembarked, my heavy weapons set up in a small house to the southwest of the town and returned fire. Shortly after taking positions in the house, Corporal Uzugiris was wounded by fire from the enemy's command element to our flank.
I immediately ordered the platoon's A7V’s to maneuver and engage them, now that they had deployed the rest of the platoon to the east of the town. They suppressed the UN position and the enemy was seen doing little more than cowering until they surrendered to our second squad.
On the other side of the hotel dominating the crossroads, our 1st squad took positions in a wood near to the hotel and checked their main body’s attempt to flank 2nd squad. Private first class Litvis and Private Salentis were killed in contact with the UN forces in the hotel. Once the enemies command element had surrendered to Sergeant Kulikowski’s squad and it was apparent to the UN troops that they were surrounded, they maintained their position in the hotel complex. They have since taken only the most conservative measures to keep us from capturing the hotel.
Through their their captured officer we were able to secure a truce around 5:13. The truce is to last 4 hours.
Asher Price
Anyone have a lead on the dark age book scans? I kind of want to start up an army or two but I want to get a look at the force lists and all that jazz before I dive in.
Also what in the hell is with the secondhand market. Everyone owns core it seems like, and rarely anything else.
Samuel Murphy
So, has anyone here played Beyond the Gates of Antares? What's the verdict? The crunch looks great and I'm considering picking up a starter set, but I'd like to be able to grab a scan of the core rules first if possible. Google-fu is failing me.
Jackson Smith
Part 2:
Evaluation: The enemy's force was small but held good positions, were well equipped, and exceptionally well trained, though I doubt there is little more than a squad left. Storming the hotel would result in heavy casualties regardless. Request reinforcements and air support. Hotel should be bombed and ground forces should concentrate on holding the crossroads against counter-attack. As we are without operational A7V-E for the moment, we have no intel regarding their communications with outside forces. For this reason we must assume they will be reinforced, they wouldn’t have agreed to a truce otherwise.
For the Duke Lieutenant Kubilus
Adrian Thomas
Agreed - Malifaux tends to have many small local tournaments, and I've never met anyone who actually wanted to play more than three games in a day. Between those two points, I can see why Adepticon is woefully under-subscribed.
Christopher Reed
Rules and everything for Dark Age are free on their site.
Connor Bennett
I still stubbornly hold on to the idea that it's system is holding it back.
