"Amazon is looking for an opportunity to add the sex, violence, and soap opera drama to Tolkien’s world that have made shows like Game of Thrones so successful"
This might actually do it. This might get the spirit of tolkien so angry that he'll come back and save us from this modern media
why do people get so mad over really old stories for children about elves, small folk, and magic?
Alexander Walker
Not sure if they said it but they did say they wanted to make a GoT style show. So, yeah...
Chase Walker
Why do people like things and value their integrity? ur bait a shit
Levi Ramirez
its not really Veeky Forums topic but fuck I am pissed
Jayden Foster
>for children about elves, small folk, and magic? I see you're a mature adult who thinks high fantasy is trash. Good on you, sir! cock sucking faggot
Cameron Butler
Lord of the rings is a staple Veeky Forums topic and the very foundation upon which most of tg is build
Jordan Barnes
>Tolkien >not Veeky Forums Are you that nu-Veeky Forums the oldfaggots always cry about?
Joseph Martin
>GRRM >fat incel with a dumbass hat >likely never got laid or had a satisfactory night of lovemaking >books feature SEXSEX INCEST SEX MIDGETS HAVING SEX SEX WHORES RAPE SEX
>JRR Tolkien >happily married father >considered LoTR as a vehicle for pushing languages he literally invented and introducing people to ideas from classical folklore >at no point do we need to know that Aragorn has a big dick, how often elfs shit or that Gimli spent every night for the next hundred years masturbating in a corner sniffing that lock of Galadriel's hair
I mean Lord of the Rings and the greater works that surround it were full of fucking violence on a scale that GoT can't even touch with its fingertips but its hardly the same as that screencap of "dany shits bad, all day."
John Flores
Yeah you know what always get's successful? Turning an established name into a knockoff of a popular thing. That'll totally capture the same audience as popular thing.
Luis Myers
>integrity Why is your integrity another mans work?
Luis Parker
I still think Amazon needs to pick up Jacquelin Carey's Kushiel series. It's got gratuitous sex and/or violence in every chapter (often at the same time), a compelling plot, some pretentious symbolism for the critics, and the clunky prose isn't a problem for a television series. It's literally the perfect source material for a big budget adult-oriented fantasy show.
Cameron Baker
These people measure quality by cost efficiency and sales. These are the "well bred" upper class lawyers and teat sucklers who validate themselves and worth as a good human being by money.
This is literally how most of the buisness world has functioned since the beginning of the century.
Jaxon Harris
...
Ethan Cook
>Kushiel series
b-but that's fantasy for GIRLS user
How could we manly men enjoy a series about the political machinations of sex workers?
Joshua Bell
At that point, I realized that I was truly the Lord of the Rings the entire time
Landon Martin
What is artistic integrity for $200?
The Hobbit movies already fucked things up, I don't want it to be fucked up any more
Our species is getting dumber by the day. Jesus fucking Christ.
Idiot producers just have to rehash everything. Even works of art. Money money money.
Still not as bad as the video games.
Julian Roberts
unfortunately, the only way we get new stuff from young creators is through the mainstream anymore. there is a reason why fantasy elements have become more popular in the past 20-30 years and its because of the mainstream, from Dragon Magazine to Elder Scrolls to GoT on HBO, it inspires new artists and creators to actually attempt to create in order to make it big in some way.
Noah Clark
Don't forget
>GRRM >draft dodger >compensates with voyeuristic descriptions of violence
>Tolkien >Served in the trenches of the Somme >Treats violence with a somber sombriety of a man who has actually been there
Logan Brown
>GRRM dares claim that Tolkien is dishonest about war Just about fell off my chair when I read that shit
Robert Williams
I don't want to be saved from modern media by Tolkienesque fantasy though. Tolkien wasn't even the most interesting fantasy author of his own time period (although probably the most accomplished).
Also I like how you're acting like this is alien to Tolkien when all you have to do is take Eöl and Túrin Turambar and you have BUCKETS of sex, violence and soap opera drama. Just because Tolkien wrote it in an epic style doesn't mean it isn't there. What do you think of Wagner's Götterdämmerung? You realise there's a reason it's called soap 'opera' right? Do you think this stuff was not in the baseline bedding of myths and folklore?
I don't think Amazon's Tolkien series will be any good but you just want to jump in outrage at something you haven't even thought about, OP.
Ryan Edwards
Abhorsen series when
Ayden Johnson
Because tits and people being flayed alive? It worked for GoT.
Aiden Davis
no u
Henry Lopez
My kingdom for a proper Elric adaptation. Or fuck it. Broken Sword miniseries at the very least.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO DO HERE? WHY MUST YOU RAPE LOTR?
Kayden Hernandez
When did he do that?
John Campbell
quality response senpai
Nathan Torres
I'm just waiting for a Black Company adaption. I'd sell my organs and those of my extended family for such a thing.
Nathaniel Reyes
Just make a Malazan adaptation
>Violence >Sex >Copious main character death >Interesting setting for them to blow their SFX budget on >Diverse cast already in place to prevent bitching about the presence/absence of minority roles
Samuel Sullivan
I'd love a battletech show in the style of GOT
Nathan Allen
user, there's not enough money in the world to cover the special effects budget needed for a quality adaption.
Carson Allen
If they want sex and violence, First Law would be so easy
Grayson Evans
He didn't. He made a comment about how as much as he likes Tolkien, he prefers describing the uglier aspects of war which Tolkien's writing ignored. He didn't word it very well, and like the infamous "tax policy" quote it's taken out of context by angry fa/tg/uys who get assblasted whenever they think someone took a pot shot at the most holy Hobbit Father.
Dylan Myers
true enough, for that and this.
People always bitch about "generic fantasy", but forget the imaginative stuff is called imaginative because it probably requires a small nation's annual GDP worth of CGI budget to replicate on screen
Owen Roberts
Should of did a Feist Rift War adaptation. He has plenty of sex, violence, and drama. Plus enough storylines to last a century.
Jacob Morgan
Source? I need to know who to mail the dog turds.
James Anderson
That font on the cover is fucking atrocious
Colton Sanchez
I don't know. It probably wouldn't cost that much to do a Virconium movie.
Ethan Diaz
WoK wouldn't be that hard to do. Flying, comically large swords, and enormous battles have all been done before. Mistborn would be nearly impossible, though.
Carter Evans
user, let me ask you something. I got my hands on Midnight Tides and The Crippled God recently, but I don't have the other books and I think it's very unlikely that I'll find them for sale ever. Can they be read separately and still enjoyed, or will it be no fun and a waste of my time to try?
Juan Green
No source. OP is as ever a fag.
Kevin Garcia
You won't understand a single fucking thing if you don't start from the beginning. And don't worry, the other books can be found easily online.
Juan Nelson
>.t Someone who has never read the books Every time I see someone bitching about Tolkein being generic I cringe. Even it being the baseline it has more than enough to set it apart from everything that has come since.
Matthew Wilson
good job op
Jaxon Martinez
Eh, I'm too much of a fan to want an adaptation that will butcher the series. They would unironically keep Raven until the Plain of Glittering Stone, replace Land of Unknown Shadows with Khatovar, and make the half set in Taglios into medieval Europe.
David Jones
Of Tolkien I've read (and in order): >The Hobbit >The Lord of the Rings >Farmer Giles of Ham & other short stories >The Silmarillion
Why don't you go re-read my post and find where I make the point you're arguing against? Because I didn't call Tolkien generic, I didn't use the word 'baseline' to refer to Tolkien and I don't actually even agree that Tolkien is the baseline for fantasy lit (Tolkien was himself preceded by a significant number of popular fantasy writers some of whom had huge influence on him, i.e. William Morris).
I cringe when people talk like Tolkien is synonymous with fantasy lit because I don't think those people have read much fantasy lit that precedes, is concurrent with or succeeds Tolkien. Or at least they've stuck to Tolkien-alikes themselves and for some reason believe that's everything.
But all this is besides me point which is that sex, violence and soap opera drama are 100% present in Tolkien's work. Particularly in the The Silmarillion.
And this is apparently just made up anyway
Benjamin Harris
Fuck me they probably would do that.
Hudson Bailey
I for one welcome Disney's Tolkein's Cinematic Universes.
Parker Peterson
>A remarkable critique of Walt Disney was given by Tolkien in a 1964 letter to a fan: >"I recognize [Walt Disney's] talent, but it has always seemed to me hopelessly corrupted. Though in most of the 'pictures' proceeding from his studios there are admirable or charming passages, the effect of all of them to me is disgusting. Some have given me nausea"
>Moreover, when certain producers became interested in movie adaptations of Tolkien's works, (he had sold the film, stage and merchandise rights of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to United Artists in 1968), he forbade Disney should ever be involved: >"It might be advisable [...] to let the Americans do what seems good to them — as long as it was possible [...] to veto anything from or influenced by the Disney studios (for all whose works I have a heartfelt loathing)."
Liam Kelly
Well, shit. I wish I could just read the ones I stumbled upon.
>the other books can be found easily online I bet, but also cripplingly expensive for a filthy third worlder. And don't get me started on shipping.
Adrian Moore
This thread is full of /tv/ posters.
Jaxson Perez
Based.
Samuel Turner
Never heard of William Morris before this thread, just looked him up and he seems like a fuckwit, how is his actual books? Are they poisoned by his sociopolitical leanings or do they stand on their own like Orson Scott Card's early stuff?
Jayden Gomez
Brilliant! GoT, in space, giant robots. I’m sold.
Cooper Price
>draft dodger Good on him. Fighting in the vietnam war would have been stupid.
Christopher White
how would you know that without being from /tv/ yourself?
Noah Watson
It's not the draft dodging that's the real issue there. It's him never having set foot in a conflict zone then presuming to lecture others on the nature of war and what it does to people; especially a man who lived through the most terrible war of them all.
Oliver Torres
Cuck
Jaxon Ward
>he doesn't lurk every board
Brayden Nguyen
Nigga the man wrote fantasy in the 1870s - 1890s. There may literally be no hope for you as a human being.
Zachary Mitchell
U wot m8?
Samuel Smith
Just download them, m8. Find a cheap/refurbished/second-hand Kindle or something. 0 regrets on buying one, especially with #bookz.
Lucas Carter
>Admitting to going to /s4s/, /bant/, /trash/, /b/, /mlp/, that one that's just a picture of a bee crawling on a guy's dick, you know I've just realized if I continued I'd be listing over half the site. This place is largely shit, why do I come here again?
Jackson Watson
I miss /z/
Dominic Smith
Your question is really fucking dumb and I can't relate enough to it to answer it. You'll just have to read the books if you care; I can tell you Tolkien was heavily influenced by them.
Leo Diaz
Following your government blindly anywhere is the very definition of cuckoldry and isn't even patriotic.
>lecture others on the nature of war and what it does to people He never did that. He simply stated that LOTR doesn't tell the full story, and he himself prefers stories where you fully delve into the nitty gritty of morality and the aftermath of war. This is all just drama that's been created since GoT got popular.
Kayden Bennett
Do I need to bring up that section about one of the hobbits looking at dead Men from both Gondor and the East, being saddened by the gallantry they both displayed and how similar they are in death?
Can GRRM capture that heartbreak? No, and he can't because all he's been is a fat writer. And then he has the audacity to treat that sort of treatment of conflict as dishonest and inauthentic.
Jack Wilson
"Politically, Morris was a staunch revolutionary socialist and anti-imperialist, and although raised a Christian he came to identify as a non-religious atheist. He came to reject state socialism and large centralized control, instead emphasising localised administration within a socialist society."
what a douchebag amirite (he wasn't even a fucking Fabian Socialist)
shamelessly stolen from the big W
Benjamin Jackson
GRRM is aiming at completely different things with his fantasy series so such a broad comparison is false. You can look at prose or even just word use and then build an argument or something, but just to say X doesn't do what Y does for me with no reason is being a stupid critic.
Julian Ross
what kind of person do you have to be that you have to know this before you can decide whether you like a fictional book or not
Juan Harris
He's referencing a quote where Gurm presumably "lectures" Tolkien about how it's unrealistic he never included sexual violence in LotR. That's not actually what Gurm said, but it's easier to take things out of context if it lets you shit on a writer just because he's popular.
You know, I have a sinking suspicion if we roll back time to 2010 Veeky Forums you'll find plenty of threads talking about how awesome ASoIaF is.
Ryan Parker
>Embracing Marxism and influenced by anarchism, in the 1880s Morris became a committed revolutionary socialist activist i.e. a wanker
Robert Gonzalez
>You know, I have a sinking suspicion if we roll back time to 2010 Veeky Forums you'll find plenty of threads talking about how awesome ASoIaF is. I can 100% confirm this Mostly because I didn't like the books, and I got a little salty whenever I saw people sucking their dick. I didn't bitch about it though, cause I'm not a pathetic troll
Ryder Brooks
I mean if the author is still alive and making money off their works you might want to know what kind of person they are before deciding to purchase their stuff. But considering Morris has been dead for more than 100 years it really doesn't matter.
Carter Peterson
You don't even have to go that far.
Dylan Evans
You can always check the archives.
Leo Bennett
>being radical when large portions of Europe's population were fucking off to America because the social situation of everyone who wasn't middle-class was absolutely atrocious >this is the same as modern day marxists in welfare societies of excess
Daniel Wright
guem never claimed that, but it‘s a fact that gurm shows the horrors a medieval war left on it‘s people a lot better than the romanricised fairytalws tolkien wrote.
Jose Brooks
Not going to be a complete faggot and get into my entire opinion on Gurm here, but my tl;dr is that the books are not very well written and the series as a whole is badly constructed but there's still some substance and worth to it.
Of course if you look at him purely as a writer of a novel vs. Tolkien Tolkien comes out far ahead. But they really aren't trying to do the same sort of shit at all.
Eli Robinson
>implying the death and destruction the bolsheviks caused with their attempts to overthrow, subvert and ultimately destroy the whole of Europe can be matched by dipshits in universities You know that all that shit led to the creation of the Nazi's right?
Bentley Bailey
I'd say any cuck that doesn't want to kill communists should honestly just be executed for treason, but the problem will sort itself out in a generation. Sorry cucky.
Easton Ramirez
>he prefers describing the uglier aspects of war which Tolkien's writing ignored It's funny, because GRRM exaggerated in the "uglier" aspects of war.
Xavier Smith
lmao
Zachary Smith
I've got no idea, but bringing up Orson Scott Card means they recognize that you can be a jackoff and still write some compelling stuff, so I don't know why they're even asking
you do realize that Morris and others like him were the dipshits in universities of their day right?
Lincoln Ramirez
>largest war in human history which has led to the disastrous policies that we have today post war that have fucked the entire planet >all because socialists and marxists wouldn't let go of their shit
Oliver Anderson
Do you know the saying "it was a different time"? Because it was a really fucking different time, when literal kings and aristocrats had all the power, and the few countries that did let its population vote only let rich land-owners do so. Hindsight is 20/20, user. Besides, the threat of Bolsheviks scared several of Europe's conservative governments into giving the lower classes a proper right to vote; we'd have reached a boiling point either way.
Ian Taylor
>communists were the real ones to blame for the nazis, not the nazis Bra-fucking-vo user. I'm in awe, honestly.
Connor Hughes
Yes but unlike the sacks of shit these days they actually took to the streets with guns and started civil wars and massacres
Camden Jones
not him, but the rise of natsoc and fascism was a direct reaction to communism.
Luke Richardson
>prideful french aristocrats giving Germany the exact amount of shit required to fuel intense resentment and encourage the rise of militant nationalist groups >the commies did this And my shitty explaination is a gross simplifcation even then.
Andrew Diaz
GRRM seemed to have learned absolutely nothing from Remarque, Junger, and Mailer to name a few.
Parker Thomas
Is this like the "she was dressed slutty, so it's ok that I raped her" argument?
Evan Morgan
the fucking English Gentry entertaining revolutionary ideology did not take to the streets, I knew I should've said "they weren't the violent Bolsheviks"
John Campbell
>implying giving the average shit kickers the right to vote was a good idea Democracy is merely a numbers game and the shitshow we have at the moment is enough to see the errors in that. If it weren't for them Hitler would be a nobody instead of the greatest monster in human history Nobody says what happened was ok, but cause and effect.
Ayden Wright
I like this non-Nazi fascist and soft Nazi apologist thing you've got going on, user.
Robert Brown
Jesus Christ people, if you want to discuss politics go to /pol/.
