I've had good use with them. The d2 is appealing for big targets but realistically, you'll get way more kills/wounds dealt if you keep its targets as light infantry/bikes/snipers. the 2d6 shots are a great use of the command reroll in the shooting phase, but i have played very few games with the codex where those command points have far more uses, so judge accordingly. Cannot praise enough thou, they are great aginst light infantry/bikes. No line of sight required means you can even skip the chin cannon usually (you are hiding it behind LOS blocking terrain, right?), but it can still help against deep strikers to your back line. plus, its a flying fast tank, so great for snagging objectives late game.

If it's a big enough game maybe bring an armour list plus a supcomm of Techpriests and a Knight and go full Knight of the Cog with your six billion Command Points? Rotate shields, add Shroudpsalm and BotO for rerolls or 2+ save.

I just give mine a thresher scythe or bone mace for an extra punch so they arent useless in combat. Most things that actively charge carnifexes have a means of killing it anyways, so its usually just better to sacrifice the fex and focus on something else. Be glad that the unit is being tied up for at least a combat phase.
