I am probably asking the wrong place here, but how do you and your groups usually prefer the level of power in their characters?

We roll for stats, so the curve is all over the place. We like this. It is with a competent GM capable of making the game fun regardless, and is often role played well enough that the power discrepancy really doesn't matter much. No one is really a power gamer, and yet when someone goes all out with a GWM super optimized killing machine, we still have a lot of fun working around it, kinda like having the Hulk, but preferring not to use it if we can avoid it.

Paladin guy here, in my party the wizard is not a liability as such. We have to put a lot of attention towards her, but that is not exactly a problem - The wizard is the central part of the story, sorta the "chosen one" who has to perform a speciric ritual at certain places in the world, but is completely unable to do it herself.

GM did it after considering making a useless wizard NPC we had to escort, but when a player made the perfect fit for the same character, he threw it on the player. Central to the plot, the "know it all" character, and still a God damn wizard. We are at level 10, and so far we havent had a lot of trouble with keeping her alive, outside of that one time the Rogue got tricked into attacking her. That was the most tense death saves we've had in the game, bar none.

I am not sure if this is the same group, but honestly, i dont see the issue. If each individual could work on their own, it just creates a weird disconnect. Having characters actually rely on each other for different things, and force them to actively help each other, outside of healing spells, creates a far more interesting character dynamic. At least in my opinion.

We standard array (if you can't be arsed or it's your first character) or point-buy in longer or party-focused campaigns. Roll in one-shots and high-lethality campaigns that start at lvl 0.

GWM is for your MAXIMUM OPTIMIZATION builds, but as long as you rock 20 Strength asap, you should be fine. Pick what would make sense for your character, user.

Not at all, but I'm a bad actor(among a lot of other bad actors) so I'm uncomfortable and unpracticed in it. Since a character change last session, though, I've basically been thrust into the role of party face since I was the last man standing in that regard. I don't think I like it, but I guess I can assume everyone else has felt this way.

heavy armor. barbarians should take GWM as soon as possible, heavy armor fighters should take HAM. don't rely on your armor for damage mitigation, you will inevitably get hit and three HP isn't much but it's enough to stay upright when it matters.
