Epic General - 40k and 30k

Epic is an old specialist game from GW that was discontinued years ago, since then the community has taken over. Recently there have been rumors of FW releasing new Adeptus Titanicus rules soonish(If ever), and depending on if it succeeds(which likely it will) they plan to expand into classic Epic.

It's based off of the Epic Armageddon rule set, otherwise known as Epic 4th Ed, with some minor changes and new army lists. You can also find 30k rules here.

You post your email in Epic threads and hope that one of the recasters contact you, or post on Tactical Command (tacticalwargames.net/taccmd/index.php) and hope you can find someone after you build up trust there. Also you can try and post on Epic 40k/30k pages but good luck with that.

There is a lot of old epic stuff on Ebay and some manufacturers produce good proxies, like vanguardminiatures.co.uk/. Tacticalwargames.net, and other forums or facebook groups also do lots of trading in second hand epic minis.

Players alternate using parts of their armies called formations rather than moving and fighting with their entire force. Morale and fatigue is represented by giving “Blast Markers” to a formation when something bad happens to it, which gradually makes it less effective and stops more and more units in the formation from acting until they rally. The scale makes units with longer range weapons or high movement speed stand out more, makes maneuvering more important and allows for the use of many units that are super heavy or above in Warhammer 40 000, such as baneblades, fliers, knights and even titans. While still keeping regular tanks and infantry relevant and effective.The new 30k stuff is also great, and they are rapidly developing more rules for the legions as the actual FW Redbooks release.

FW has said repeatedly they'll never do Epic. They will however do standalone games in smaller scales such as a tank battle game set on Tallarn during the Heresy.

I've recently read the Epic rules and I fell in love with them. There's no related community whatsoever in my country, and even if there was I wouldn't have the money to get into wargaming.

So I've decided to print counters and try to rope a couple of tabletop friends who might be interested.
Opinions?

I've also made some Tyranids. Of course most of the images are from the Epic and vanilla 40k modules for Vassal.

Sad to report no.

After struggling with them for well over a year it has become clear to me the reason that forge world only offered them for a brief period of time.

There are so many issues.

First the cost, due to the type of the mold required and violent nature of the demolding process the cost per cast would have to be much higher than I find reasonable, basically it amounts to the same cost that forgeworld used to charge plus a bit extra.

Second the act of casting them requires a number of extra steps and equipment, the whole thing is a pain in the ass.

Finally the casts that have been able to produce do not match my quality requirements, I only accept 100% while the building casts are not quite 100% and have a few defects, more like 98% and that is not good enough...

So have many of the new models and tanks from FW just been larger scale versions of the original Epic models? Because a lot of the figures I am seeing now are what FW has been pumping out.

Had a couple of games on Vassal a fair few years back. Really not too hard, you just have to remember that Vassal does nothing for you, essentially it is just a virtual table.

You need to read and at least kinda know the rules yourself.

As for finding a player, I guess one of the Epic forums or maybe some people here?

I always get tempted to pick up some epic stuff off ebay. Always liked the scale but only played it once or twice but bought a couple of the larger warmachines just cause they looked cool when I was a wee kid.

As I never played though they just ended up in a box, got broken, mixed up, used for spare parts and/or lost.

Here's my starter guide that I post in each of these threads… but with 8mm titans coming out soon it's difficult to recommend spending a lot of money on eBay. I believe FW when they say they don't want to recreate their 28mm Horus Heresy game in 8mm, but a) it could still happen, and b) I wouldn't be surprised if 3rd-party mini makers started moving towards the larger scale.

More than that, it's hard to get people into a game when there's a newer game in a similar scale even if it's mechanically very different.

Still… Epic Armageddon is a great game. Don't spend tons of money on it but do try it out.

For your very first time its very good.

You need to learn the next part though, how to apply washes and then drybrush/highlight.

The wash and DB/highlight is actually the easiest part of painting a model, and makes it go from 'meh' to 'awesome.'

EVA foam (it's actually two sheets glued together for a total thickness of 3mm). I've then laser printed the images on regular paper, glued those on and sealed the whole counter with clear packing tape.

Considering that mechanizing a Black Legion retinue is so cheap, can anybody give me some examples where god-specific demons are actually useful, besides teleportation or drop-podding?

Ebay exists. Vanguard and Onslaught exist. Recasters are the more expensive and difficult way to get into the game. I'm gonna post some OC but seriously, your opinion does not matter as much as the recasters', and they have been pretty clear about posting their shit willy-nilly.
