So would LoTR have been as popular if the Uruks were always this goofy?

Tolkien is turning in his grave

The reason I love Shadow of Mordor series so much is that it makes Tolkien fanatics mad.

What stuff did it do? I haven't played the games but OPs big seems possible, I could imagine an orc who played mocking songs at people from just LotR. I don't imagine he would actually be able to play but he would be doing it in mimicry of elves and men.

But what else did the game do? Off the top of my head the things I have seen people outraged about are:
>Shelob has a sexy alternate human form which is the pornstar Stoya
>Helm Hammerhand was one of the human kings who became a Ringwraith

There's an Uruk that can survive cleaving and become "The Machine." Basically going full Von Stroheim on you.
There are some Orcs that don't even taunt you, instead they get somebody else to taunt you while they hold stock still.
>This Uruk is so lazy, he doesn't even have time to taunt you! So instead, I have to do it. So here goes, you're ugly and you're going to die.
Uruks being alarmingly intelligent to the point where some understand what metaphors are and can make body doubles of themselves that are capable of mimicking their voices.

But other than that, fairly normal.

You fight a balrog amongst other things, and become a ringwraith.

Lotr fanboys are assblasted retards that can't take any criticism. I enjoy shadow of war because it makes them so mad. As a non-fanboy, the game is fun and I like it

The fight a balrog with help from a tree man.

Goblins were pretty intelligent in The Hobbit

>liking something because it molests source material in a way that's not even vaguely interested
>all because it annoys fans of the source
Enjoying or hating a game, film, TV-show, or book solely because of the fanbase and not on any of its own merits is absurd.

I would be perfectly okay with this game if they threw out all the celebrimbor/ringwraith/shelob etc garbage and made it solely about Uruks fucking with each other. They could rape the lore all they like then.

To be fair all the orcs in it are fine, the singers and rhymers can sing and rhyme but they aren't very good at it. Like everything orcs do its a poor imitation of men and elves

The main issues are
>You become a ringwraith
>Isildur is a ringwraith
>The eye of sauron from the movies is half sauron and half elf
>Shelob is an intelligent shape shifting spirit

Turning Shelob into a imo not very attractive woman in a skimpy outfit because dudes can't handle a horrible spider creature being a woman it's funny if only because it shows how pathetic and timid gamer dudes are.

>imo not very attractive woman
lol

>it shows how pathetic and timid marketing executives think gamer dudes are.
Fixed that for you.

All I wanted to do is team up with a giant spider.

That's the game designers who think that user, people round here have no problem fapping to bugs

As a LotR fanboy, I'm not saying it's un-fun to play. The actual gameplay is a blast.
It's just that the story happens to suck from ANY viewpoint, fanboy or not. "There were a set number of these beings in existence. All of them were accounted for. All of them were a thrall to the Evil Overlord. EXCEPT YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE SPECIAL." It's shit-tier LotR fan fiction, and bad writing in general. If you can get past or ignore this, and ignore the company's equally horrid business practices, there's a beautifully fun game in there.

True that, look at the Quelaag fanbase

Metaphor doesn't strike me as a particularly difficult concept.

To be honest the main character and his edgy quest for revenge were the shittest part of the first game. I liked the orcs much better and I was kinda sad when the orc runt that you spend the first part of the game carefully grooming gets killed.

Whats his tax policy?

If the prequels came out nowadays you'd have people climbing over themselves to defend it just because Stwars fans didn't like it. If you honestly work like that: you're really, really pathetic. More pathetic than those Tolkien fans you dislike.
Ratbag isn't dead, he shows up like a quarter of the way through the campaign in Shadow of War
Well, I fucking failed.

>EXCEPT YOU BECAUSE YOU'RE SPECIAL." It's shit-tier LotR fan fiction
didnt celebrimbor forge a new ring in this setting

Oh come on, you guys and I both know the reason they made Shelob a woman was because of laziness.

>"alright, so at this point Shelob gets an extended speakimg scene where she scuttles around Tallion as she talks. Anybody good at rigging up large, eight-legged models?"
>"Hey, maybe we can just make her a... human shapeshifter who transforms INTO a spider when she has action scenes?"
>"Brilliant! That'll save us WEEKS on the memory collectible cutscenes!"

Yeah. He puts most of his (apparently not inconsiderable) power into the ring

Did you play to the end? Because Celebrimbor falls to darkness too.
It's meant to show that you CANNOT fight Sauron at his own game. At very best you can hope to become as twisted and cruel as he is

>He puts most of his (apparently not inconsiderable) power into the ring
yeah but thats not my point. the point is sauron made his one ring to rule over the other rings he helped make before, basically he was making a ring that can exploit admin rights of these old rings he purposefully made vulnerable.
celebrimbor made his new ring with knowledge of that exploit so i dont see the issue why sauron isnt dominating him

That sucks. I always hoped it turned out to be total noncanon oc wank, like Talion saves Middle Earth before Frodo even has to go on his quest and so he's just got a normal ass ring now.

It just makes me angry cause the whole fandom was left mostly untouched for decades, and then they make a video game that shits on most of the lore and the plebs keep sucking its dick like its the best thing ever even when the game is not even that good

I'd hoped so too. It really feels forced trying to jam it into standard canon. I think it could have been quite interesting as an AU/What If? type deal

It's mainly the Nemesis system. It's pretty novel and entertaining, though it does start showing cracks once you get deeper into the game. I really wish there was more interaction with your orcs other than just siccing them on people or giving them command posts. Expand on the whole evil overlord thing. Let me solve internal disputes, logicstics problems, slave revolts. They do all that work to give orcs personality and then there's not a whole lot to do with it once they're on your side.

This. I have never understood that mindset.
>Haha I'm gonna mindlessly defend this game and it's flaws because it makes people upset LMAO EPIC TROLL

When your game's plot is indistinguishable from a fanfic OC insert that does things directly against what can be done just to be cool, you have problems.

Why even make it a LOTR game if you're just going to shit over it? Why not make it your own fantasy game?

Valuable IP bonus to sell more games.

There was a time when Veeky Forums held itself to a higher standard than the rest of the site.

>Did you play to the end?
Which is a Tolkienesque moral indeed.
Of course everything else that happens in the game is still completely off.

But if all you do is push generic stuff in it, it just dilutes the IP.

Management doesn’t understand that.
You gotta understand, WB Montreal is part of WB, which means it’s part of Time-Warner, which means it’s integrated into the Time-Warner heirarchy. Management is not promoted there for creativity, it’s promoted because it’s management. Management folks do not create and often have little to no background in creating, especially in a big company like Time-Warner. Their backround instead is in moving money around and, appropriately, managing the logistics of the company itself.

It means that paradoxically the people in charge of creators in this day and age often have no idea why their creations are successful, only that they do or do not make money.

Come the fuck on. It's a stretch to call even Saruman a nuanced character, he does nothing but evil things the whole time and when he gets his ass kicked he's so evil and petty he goes and takes over the harmless and defenseless shire just to be a dick.

Let alone Shelob.

Giving the orcs actual personalities and stuff is kind of uncanny since the book ends with their race being literally genocided after Sauron's fall.

Congratulations. You are probably not an orc.

I think its fair to imagine that with enough Feanorian style first age supernatural defiance and arrogance one could easily stomp around Mordor for a while in its second heyday wreaking something something resembling War of the Jewels-esque havoc, dressing up orcs in Numenorean inspired armor.

But only as long as its violently crushed and usurped by Tar-Mairon and turned into a horrible sourge meant to march over the misty mountains and shove some grisled orc willies into the people of Bree, whilst the lord of the tower educates them on how Melkor first invented cheese.

Orcses' grasp of metaphorses is like smeagol's grasp or fishes, precious.

>but it felt like Gandalf and Galadriel kind of lied to them [the Fellowship] a little bit about their chances and what differentiates Shelob is that she's completely honest.. So she's evil, or perceived as evil, but she has this honesty to her, and so as we started thinking through that and thinking of her as this dark mirror to Galadriel and filling that role in our story of that narrator and what that would look like.
