>What's your favorite (on-screen or otherwise) fleet battle in Star Wars, /swg/?
Ep.6 had a good one, though not nearly enough cap ship action for my tastes. I also, despite the movie's flaws, really enjoy the Rogue One space combat sequence.

The fight in R1 is pretty cool. It was nice to see Y-wings not getting shit on in primary media.

Curious, but are AT-ATs immune to Bombers?

I remember them saying it wars hard to scratch the armor in one, but I never saw a Bomber try.

Legion's looking pretty good in actually decent paint schemes.

>are AT-ATs immune to Bombers?
Probably not.

>I never saw a Bomber try.
Because Hoth was too cold. Somehow a planet is colder than the void of space. Also they needed all their fighters to escort the transports.

...

So beautiful.

Wonder if it's just armour or if they have deflectors. In ESB they say the speeders can't scratch their armour, but when they trip one over, the speeders are able to destroy it. Maybe its reactor got damaged and it didn't have shields anymore?

I agree. It is a good combination of that nostalgia from the OT ships coupled with new filming technologies to make it very cool. I also like Admiral Raddus, he's a pretty sweet Mon Cal.

Space lacks atmosphere to transfer that cold onto your ship.

I thought they used speedes on the planet because prolonged flights could be problematic for the fighters and for the battle the fighters and bombers were probably needed to escort space ships while ground troops just bought them time, and as the speeders couldn't fly in space, they drew the short straw.

>transfer that cold onto your ship.
That's not really how heat works.

Shattered Empire has NR Y-Wings using cluster magnetic bombs to take them down. Don't remember ever seeing standard proton bombs used on them before, but I doubt even the hardiest walker can just shrug off explosives.

Star Wars doesn't operate on real world physics, it works on rule of cool.

Wow, Y-Wings have made the Derpfortress obsolete.

AU:

Preferring the absolute loyalty and guaranteed inability to use the Force of the droids, Sheev decided to use the sides in the Clone Wars the other way around. The Trade Federation become a military-industrial manufacturing complex, supplying the Republic (and later, Empire) with droids and weaponry, while the Clone Army emerges as an invading force from the Galactic Rim.

I was pondering that myself.

I thought it was Ray Shields, but they make no mention of that in the new Canon.

> but I doubt even the hardiest walker can just shrug off explosives.

They had some in the Clone Wars that can and did, but those had Ray Shields on them.

I feel like it probably has something to do with the type of engines the speeders use vs the spaceships. The spaceships not being ideal for atmo fighting.

Couple that with trying to keep your precious assets intact, you have the spaceships fleeing rather than fighting and using the relatively cheap speeders to fight it only makes sense logistically.

AU:
The Clone Wars was a three way clusterfuck between the Outer-Rim Clone Warlords, the Trade Federation's Droid Armies and the Republic Self Defense Force. The Self Defence Force, over time, became the Republic Army and any able human adults are conscripted into it. Over time, the army became indoctrinated into Palpatine's New Order, becoming the Imperial Army we all know and love.

Armada newbie from the last thread here. Wanted to say to the user that helped me out yesterday with the tutorials blog, thanks!
I went for a demo today to the LGS and got an Arquitens, a carrier flotilla and the second imperial fighter pack, I think I am now set for a while so that I can learn and have some options to play

Those thing are only there for Hasbro to sell more toys. Too bad they are shelf-warming.

Cheers, and happy flying.

I heard there is a star wars RPG similar to Rogue Trader, can I get some pointers?

Between the fortress bombers of the new films and the K-Wings, which are more heavily armed and which would, in theory, be more effective?

I don't know much about the fortresses, but I remember the K-Wings being extremely good, but not surpassing the Y-Wing to the point that both weren't used in conjunction.

That'd be Edge of the Empire, though I'd say Traveller is a closer comparison. I'm sure WEG D6 could also be used for a Rogue Trader style game, with the right supplements.

could you tell me how do they hold up and how accessible they are?

I'm somewhat conflicted because I hate WH40k lore but star wars is a bit too bland

The funky dice take a little bit of getting used to, but after the first session or two it's super smooth. Balance is good, even between jedi and non-jedi characters, and trap options generally aren't an issue.

There sure is a lot of Mandalorian hate outside of /swg/

I fell asleep on the computer, didn't reply to the last post you made, and felt bad because people being helpful and not rude isn't common.
Are Gladiators (and CR90s) that good to play 2 of them?

sounds interesting, thank you

WEG D6 is a pretty simple system, it's very easy to tweak and modify to your tastes. It also handles vehicle scaling far better than the other systems, though there is some fucky stuff when you get to Starfighters.

Edge of the Empire is based on a funky dice system, the rolls show not only if you succeed or fail but also give you narrative advantage or disadvantage. It's a neat system, but it gets too talent spammy for my tastes. Character to Vehicle scaling isn't great, and using anything smaller than the Falcon is rocket tag.

Well yes, both those ships are good enough to justify a pair (although usually in a dedicated, wholly MSU fleet).

That picture is from the Wave 1, 300 point days, though.

Forgot to say vehicle combat is not so good in the FFG systems, but there are fan fixes.

Definitely the K-Wings. The B/SF-17s holding a candle to them is completely out of the question.
They are actual starfighters with an incredibly heavy payload, which can also shoot in any direction, not immobile blimps that are more likely to blow each other up than their target.
Only downside of the K-Wing is their lack of a hyperdrive.

I did read a bit about light cruiser / gladiator fleets, but I hope playing variety is decent enough, too many ships that I like

Yeah, they got wanked to hell and back by Karen Traviss, (Ko)toR and Fett fanboys.

Because people just hear Mandos as being the ridiculously overpowered wank-rags that they are in some stories and a lot of edgy teenagers like them that way.
There's more to them, more stories and more interpretations, than that - but it's the image they have to some people.

I mean, how many utterly obnoxious Boba Fett fans exist, who claim he's the utterly coolest guy to ever exist that can do anything ever? Sure, he's a badass in the EU, but on-screen he's only an implied badass for half the movies he's in.
Now imagine that kind of faboyism for like, a whole culture.

space included?
I guess if they include everything from star destroyers to tie fighters thats hard to balance

>I hope playing variety is decent enough, too many ships that I like

There's loads of variety. Armada's well balanced enough that you can make just about anything work if you like it enough. (The exception being upgrade cards, including Commanders - a bad upgrade is a bad upgrade; but everything that's *plastic* is viable in some way or another).

What about a comparison between B-Wings and K-Wings?

B.
If only because it's so much sexier to look at.

They both don't have much in common, except for the fact that they're bombers/assault starfighters with lasers and various payloads.

B-Wing
>very expensive
>difficult to fly
>crew of one (or two)
>extremely narrow attack profile with a wide firing arc
>ion cannons
>hyperdrive

K-Wing
>even more expensive
>probably not as difficult to fly
>crew of four
>flying fortress. Extremely huge, but can shoot in virtually all directions
>a fucking turbolaser
>no hyperdrive

Thanks, good to hear that. I'll probably get an Interdictor next, even if it's just to have it on the desk

Reminder that Old Bearded Guy is Rex, according to Best Writer Dave Filoni

Sounds like the K-Wing is what you'd throw into general fleet actions and that the B-Wing is something you might reserve for precision operations or hit and run operations.

Yeah, they reflected the general strategies of their developers. The Rebel Alliance relied upon independently operating high-quality starfighters and space guerilla tactics.
The New Republic, however, had the luxury of having whole fleets with carriers, destroyers and even dreadnaughts. Hyperdrives just weren't essential for their new starfighters anymore.

The key to the Interdictor is playing to objectives, but you've got Squadrons 2 so the only other thing you might need for that is Corellian Conflict (comes with additional objectives).

Are there any Old Republic era novels worth picking?

Deceived

Did any other authors even touch the Mandalorians besides Traviss?

-Marvel comics (which originated the idea of Mandalorians)
-Haden Blackman (connected Jango to the Mandalorians)
-Matt Stover (had Fenn Shysa in Shadows of Mindor)
-TOTJ (KJA created the idea of a Mandalore leading the Mandalorians during the Sith Wars)
-George Lucas/Dave Filoni (Death Watch and Vizsla and Dark Saber)

Traviss's ideas were ultimately a drop in the bucket.

The Bane trilogy is decent, although Karpyshyn's writing can feel pretty masturbatory sometimes.

and whoever wrote the Neo-Crusaders established them as a warrior culture, or was that Marvel comics or Blackman?

What are some interesting ships that a Rebel fleet could use besides the usual MC80s, CR90s, and Neb-Bs?

Hammerheads, Assault Frigates, MC30s, MC75s, any looted Imperial ship you can think of?

Left-over Clone Wars designs from both sides.

Is there a good primer for setting up Edge of the Empire on Roll20?

I was disappointed, honestly. I did wait for a solid eight months before seeing it however, and it had been hyped to hell and back at that point.
There's some nice meaty hits in the battle over Coruscant that just didn't happen over Scarif. Part of that is cinematography. We get closeups at Coruscant, but even when Vader enters, his ISD is so far from the camera that the turbolasers don't feel impressive, even when that escort frigate gets snapped in half. We even cut to the frigate as it snaps. We don't get a before and after in one shot. Disappointing.

There are no built-in modules. What my group does is we do voice-only and then we use roll20 to keep track of destiny, PCs, NPCs, and do our rolls.

There IS actually a built-in dice module, but it requires a Pro subscription to use.

TOTJ and Bioware both touched on the Basilisk war droids, which are absolutely disgusting. Anyone else?
Those things are just too much. It's like putting something from Macross into Gundam. No. It's too much.

Honestly I actually felt like mecha and starwars would be a good fit myself, what got to me was learning that these assholes stole these droids and bred their makers into nonsapience, thats fucking messed up

Please never work for Disney. Things are shit enough as it is.

What about the starwars transformers crossover toys?
Also seriously no setting isn't enhanced by giant robots

We have AT-AT and AT-ST, some mechs aren't that far fetched. Imagine Votoms like mechs with the storm trooper look.

>mecha
>ever making things worse

Indeed, generally I know that any piloted machine should have some limits and any in starwars should be kept firmly in the "real robot" side of things unless a force user is in the seat.

Humanoid mecha doesn't belong, and I'll object to anything that looks like it came from Chromehounds as well.
They have too much gun for Star Wars, same as the basilisk.

Some Battletech designs are fine Cicada but the further we get from AT-STs and the CIS crab droids and the more misplaced it feels.
Pic bothers me, for instance. It's too clearly based on practical, real-life crustaceans. It doesn't have the silliness and "Star Wars operates on its own rules" feeling of an AT-AT.

Is this the closest Star Wars will get to having a craftworld?

>Imagine Votoms like mechs with the storm trooper look.

starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Zero-G_assault_stormtrooper

Dunno, stuff like this would look proper SW.

Actually, there are actual Mechs in Canon now:

starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Mech/Canon

Oh me personally i was thinking something like a chicken walker with jump jets, very much kept to the star wars look and such.

Speaking of, what was up with this lego set anyways?

>miniguns in my galaxy far far away
I hate it.

Sure, I mean we already have that in pic related.
I was referring more to the humanoid Gundam/Macross style.

yeah that's...basically an AT-RT.

But SW is a silly place too.
Xabungle for example could be any planet with above average Mechanics in the SW universe imho.

That's effectively AT-RT with a different chassis. Come on now.

It looks like a suplimentary walker mode to a starfighter

I kinda like the new walker(though I still hate the name) because it straddles the line between vehicles and mecha.

Laser miniguns have been a thing for a while

I hate it a lot less after seeing the movie. The fact that it's not just used exactly the same as the AT-ATs in ESB, and basically are just background ornamentation, made it bug me a lot less.

Nice.
NICE.

What about those? It even has a silly missile launcher.

>/co/ and /tv/ take their turns shitting up the thread
>now /m/ is

wow

That's my only issue with it. It looks like the artist wanted to make a starfighter and someone told him it had to be a mech so he just added legs to the damn thing and took off the wings those guns might have been in.

Isn't that what Phase III Dark Troopers almost are?

don't act like this isn't so much better

>Somehow a planet is colder than the void of space.

A planet is wetter than the void of space, is probably the problem.

Feels like this general is a hideout for OT fanboys only.

Honestly I'd be cool with it if it like had the wings folded up visibly and a set of engines, would feel verstile instead of oddly designed

This is about as bad as a kevlar equivalent in star wars, baka desu.

no, I mean I'll take /m/posting over /tv/ or /co/ posting any day of the week

I'd like to point out this is mech like and apparently Canon as of now. Interesting..

starwars.wikia.com/wiki/All_Terrain_Missile_Platform

Not OT specifically, but definitely older fans. It's why Force """discussions""" get dumb fast. OT Force is vague and mysterious. EU Force is space wizards and shit. PT Force is poorly choreographed John Woo movies. ST Force just werks.

Can someone please explain why people like Rey? She's barely a character.

I like it.
Unless they are laser canons and not missiles.
I could see a Dak Trooper 4 as a sort of vehicles, the third could be worn like a power armor.
Oh. O-okay I will stop mech posting.
