let's have a thread about architecture in fantasy and sometimes sci-fi. what are some of your favorite settings with interesting architecture and which ones do you think are criminally under used? I feel like urban fantasy is underused, although we were just thrown a bone with bright, granted the architecture wasn't a huge focus.

I'm thinking a huge scattering of isolated city states that all have a different technological and magical development path derived from the titan that guided their civilization.
well i think the easiest thing to do first would be to seperate all the architecture into groups of what looks most similar, especially if we're tackling everything, it's reasonable to assume that the similar appearing ones would be grouped close together even in a fantasy setting. we have a few pictures from magic's ravnica from here, although not all of them should go together i think, it's got diverse architecture in world since the whole plane of existence is covered in city, i think realistically the ones from ravnica that look different enough should be seperated in this map

an interconnecting and abandoned train station system on the outskirts of i feel like these two could be in a similarly forested area, like, the bottom half is the ruins the forest has overgrown and the top one is a newer civilization sprung up on top of it

It has the same colour scheme definitely. The robots with strange organic parts could also maybe clock tech.

Hey- one setting I’m coming up with is essentially the Vatican City on a floating island over a Great Lake. It has access to the only portals in the world, including one that goes to heaven (but only like the waiting room of heaven, which is an endless series of cathedral rooms). Flying mounts are common in the setting. Anything I should take into consideration about it?
I'd say it'd have to be sword and sorcery a la Conan, but with a bit of steam tech added.

The lost kingdom (freaky magic) used to be hyper-advanced. Hubris and deals with devils caused a magical apocalypse. This was in ancient times.
Since then other civilizations have arisen at the edges of the magical wasteland, but they've always thought they were the only survivors of the now faded into myth and of the world and wouldn't go exploring over the magical version of irradiated wasteland.
The neo colony (city of the future) are refugees of their own little apocalypse. They were the rich and priviliged class of the people that used to live in the scrap country (war machines). They're purely scientific with no magic, scrap country is still lived in but they have lost some of the ancient technology and are in constant turf war with hapazardly engineered mechs.
The empire (normal but bigger) is the opposite of them, in that it's pretty much pure magic. They're able to use magic to build and maintain much greater buildings and cities but they still have the form and conventions of medieval technology constructs.
The only people they know of that they haven't conquered are the independent coast cities (water architecture). But a stable peace exists between the two factions.
The only current civilization to mix magic with science is the brass city (clock tech), which uses magic to make their clock stuff work. However, they're not as good at magic as the magic users and not as advanced as the science users.

I tend to like modernist glass monstrosities when I imagine how they could look in another 20-50 years. Sort of faded, half used, a bit broken but people still trying to maintain a semblance of normalcy. Like the western euro version of all the decrepit soviet block buildings that look dope now.

If your building's foundations don't have to account for the curvature of the earth, it's not big enough.
