Just because there was less people doesn't mean they were evenly spread out over the world. Competition over the good land that existed was certainly a thing.

It's important to remember that quite a lot of what is considered "good land" today only is so thanks to industrialised agriculture.

The majority of Europe for example was forest, than has been toiled, drained in the case of swamps, and fertilized for lots of generations, same with the North of India or the chinese good lands, the case of the Chinese you can even see entire hills devoid of anything but stone and farmland.

The primary reason the mortality age is so low when you look at history isn't because the average joe keeled over at 45, it's because infant death was massively higher.

Of course, if you contracted some horrible disease or got cancer or such, you were almost guaranteed to die whereas today you'd have a decent shot at survival, but most people don't experience such afflictions in their lifetimes. They also lived and ate a lot healthier.

For sure the average age is higher today due to modern medicine, but it's not close to double.
