Previously on /5eg/:
Who is your character? What drives them to do what they do?

fpbp amiright

thanks for starting a new thread, op.

I'm starting a Lizardfolk barbarian that eats things. he eats things because he gets hungry.

Playing ToA. Dwarf fighter. Sailor turned treasure hunter.

I'm going to DM for the first time ever Running Curse of Strahd and I've got a player that refuses to be anything other than a samurai. Is the Xanathar's Samurai even playable or will they find heartache? I'm going to let him play it but it annoys the crap out of me because in the last game we were both players in he warped the whole campaign around him to be samurai even though they were explicitly not allowed. Other than that he's a really good friend but fuck man i thought this was just a made up greentext

I did that and it was dope as fuck. The crafting feature for lizard men makes sure you always got javelins for days. And I never had problems with food between eating foes and high survival.

Include this in OP next time:

>Character Art
www.shadbase.com/

Playing a dragonborn sorcerer that wants to find his draconic ancestor.
He’s a bit arrogant and brash and I’m playing with two other new players that aren’t all that serious. I guess it’s better than nothing.

My character is a human oath of the ancients paladin.

>Born a commoner in a world that highly values noble blood in the knighthood
>Taken as a squire by a knight, who many years later knighted my character on his deathbed
>No lords would allow him into his service due to his ignoble birth.
>His love interest, a noble maiden, can not take his hand in marriage due to his ignoble birth and lack of lands.
>Embarks on a quest to claim what is essentially our settings equivalent to the holy grail, a fabled relic lost to the ages.
>Once he finds the grail people will respect him and he'll totally get to bang that fair maiden, he is sure of it
>Most other knights pejoratively called him the "Grail Knight" once word of his quest spread but now that the party has earned respect and done great deeds it has become more of an honorific title. Still haven't found that grail tho.

New player joined so this campaign is on the shelf since we were level 9 and he wanted a fresh start. Fucking bullshit. I loved that campaign.

Bump this thread over the other troll thread.

New character, I'm putting the finishing touches on him.

High Elf (Moon Elf)
Cleric(Knowledge)/Wizard(Abjuration) 1/9
Deity: Mystra
Background: Knight of the Order (Knights of the Mystic Fire).

Sir Lysander Brightstar is a mageknight devoted to the goddess of magic, Mystra, and a member of the Knights of Mystic Fire, an order or righteous paladins and wizards who hunt down renegade spellcasters, lost artifacts and other unusual magical threats.

I've got a kind of thematic spell list, mostly focussing on fire evocation and abjuration barriers, and spells that fit both categories like Wall of Fire and Fire Shield.

The new player insisted on a brand new campaign, even though others were invested? That's pretty fucking shitty.

...

Mechanically this is almost identical to one of my characters. She's a High Elf Wizard (Divination) 8 / Cleric (Knowledge) 1, devoted to Mystra and also focused almost entirely on fire spells.
Only, she's come to Barovia to rescue her fuck-up younger sister (another player with a Half-Elf Warlock) from the mess she's in, hopefully getting her safely back home without bringing any more embarrassment down on the family name and further damaging our political standing.

no.

Who the hell do you think you are? We only just got to double digit replies.

They were made at roughly the same time, only that one has a tittymonster thread picture so all of the children have flocked to it.

It also has a shadbase link in the OP.

Should the new plane shift be in the op?

There were a few things that made us shelf the campaign. Its a little more involved than that.

>DM: tends to suffer from the writer's curse of hating everything they do, and not thinking its good enough. Writes himself into a hole or whatever and just wants to give up and start fresh.
>Player 1: me, happy with campaign
>Player 2: doesn't want to play a wizard anymore.
>Player 3: Player 2's wife, now future ex-wife. Left the game, cause ex-wife.
>Player 4: DM's wife. Picked bard, didn't like it. Doesn't want to be a bard anymore.

We took a vote and I got shafted.
>1 vote stay on current campaign
>2 votes whatever
>1 vote new campaign

I'll be bumping this thread instead of the other, thank you very much.

REAL THREAD

Our thread has /ourgirl/ Nico in it.

>Player 5: Replacing Player 3. No character yet.

Amonkhet has rules for playing planeswalkers and Ixalan has rules for using mana colors as alignment. These are getting better and better.

My character is the 10th son in line for a smaller kingdom to the north, he plans on keeping that number right where it is, who has taken on the duties of being a diplomat for his family since he's the least rowdy and most refined of the bunch. While his love for his family is a big factor for him traveling to strengthen bonds between his and other nations, he also does it to help bring a bit more joy to the world leaving places just a bit brighter than when he got there. This has led him to enjoying fine company, wine, song and stories above all else.

Unfortunately more than once it's gotten him into trouble with a noble because he agreed to give lessons on an instrument, but the over protective father felt he was doing more than just teaching.

>Mechanically this is almost identical to one of my characters.
How's it playing? Mind sharing your prepared spell list?

I'm essentially 'pretending' to be a gish. I have armor and a shield, but I don't actually plan on making melee attacks. Here's my prepared spells.

>she's come to Barovia to rescue her fuck-up younger sister
We just finished Curse of Strahd. My monk decided to stay in barovia to keep killing evil shit there.

>DM has us roll for stats
>Gave me an array that wasn't what I actually rolled, but is only slightly more terrible than the one I rolled
>Mfw I can't make my character good at what they're supposed to be good at

Neck yourself.

whoops heres my spells
Cleric 1/Wizard 9 (knowledge/abjuration)

Wait so he had you roll stats then threw them out when they were too good or did he put them where he felt they should go?

A guy we play with rolled 18 16 16 16 10 11

>shadbase
What is the shadbase?

Go fuck yourself with broken glass.

Do you think this encounter is too strong for a group of 7 level 10s? Its the last fight for a character's side quest that the party will be doing.

I literally do not know, he rolled one set of stats in the Roll20 and then immediately told me on Discord my stat array was something else - in retrospect, I think he didn't know I was in the Roll20 when he rolled the stats.

Also, are tools wisdom-based or intelligence-based?

EK/Abjurer
>Athletic scholarship to wizard academy
>Continued into grad school, working on his Masters thesis when war broke out
>left school to defend his hometown, lost his scholarship and couldn't afford tuition
>started adventuring to finish his thesis and win back a position at the academy, but has become more disillusioned with the politicking and apathy that academics have been showing in light of recent world events

>cleric 1/wizard 9
disgusting

It's the same face pics one guy has been using as op pic even though it has nothing to do with D&D.

Wait, what? He made you roll and then gave you other stats to use? Why?

Samurai Fighter or Way of the Kensei Monk. Which one is better mechanically and which one is more fun?

porn site with some weird fetish shit

Glad you asked. Pic Related.

Also real thread:

We have /ourgirl/ Nico

Personally I know tools are a mix of both, because being a mechanic you can know what a tool is for but have no clue how to use it properly or how to get it in where you need to use it.

I don't know, and the weirdest part was my original roll wasn't even that good, it just tallied up to +8 or something while the one he gave me tallies up to +5.

Your original thread got deleted for a reason fag lord

Why are all the races in this plane shift so garbage? Vanilla humans, double mental stat merfolk, double mental stat vampires, literally half-orcs, goblins that only get +2 dex for some reason and another meme flying race don't seem that great

If you're trying to kill them, then no, it should be fin.

Gotcha. Some parts sound salvageable, but it's hard to change people's minds once they've decided to jump ship. That's social games for you.

(I'm personally way too stubborn as a DM- unless someone else wants to run this thing, we're running my half-baked narrative into the ground.)

How should I go about doing this?

>Who is your character? What drives them to do what they do?

He's a noble who's the last remnant of his house alongside his twin sister, and he will do everything he can to recover his lands, his title, his possession, and most importantly, his loved one from the hands of the rival house.

Cleric/Wizards of Mystra have been a thing since 2e. Get over it.

But my new thread is still alive :^).

>dm rolled stats for you
nani the fuck

Mods plz ban

Do you honestly expect anyone to believe that's why you took a 1 level cleric dip?

Yeah at 20 something posts mostly (you) and a couple other gullible idiots.

And the worst part is I've got a 6 and a 7 to work with because they're doing 3d6.

>generally played paladins ever since I started playing 2e in 2004
>spent the past ten years DMing 3e and 5e when it came out, rarely playing
>one of my players tells us that he wants to fill in one of our campaign slots that just opened up
>I was DMing that campaign so can now play
>mfw

What's the most fun paladin oath? I'm thinking about doing Oath of the Ancients, potentially.

Already have my backstory figured out. All that remains is to pick the Oath.

Personally I like Ancients over the others, although Devotion is tempting since it's really close to the original paladin style from what I've gathered.

There's an element of character fluff in the oaths, if that's your thing.

I wanted to play a mageknight dude devoted to mystra. Cleric/Wizard checked off all my boxes

>Fire Spells
>Abjuration Spells
>Armor and Shield

I considered Fighter3/Wizard7. But the action surge shit is cheesy as hell.

Ancients is the best one.

All PHB paladin Oaths are great, pick one that fits your character best.

Ancients are definitely one of the best archetypes 5e has given us.

She's pretty fun. I managed to snag the Staff of Cold so now I have access to some ice spells too. I'm basically playing her as a full spellcaster (party already has a Paladin, Ranger/Fighter, and Monk) although every once in a while I've gotten to mix things up in melee... usually to protect my sister.

Pic related is my inspiration picture. The clothes are a touch too modern but I just fell in love with the overall theme for an elf noble.

Biggest problem I have playing the character is remembering to burn my Portent rolls. I tend to hang on to them a little too long and just when I think I'm low enough on resources to start using them the group goes "OK LONG REST TIME"

>Cantrips
Firebolt, Create Bonfire, Green Flame Blade, Mage Hand, Message, Guidance, Mending, Light
>Level 1 Prepared:
Feather Fall, Shield, Prot Evil/Good, Magic Missile, Disguise Self
>Level 2
Invisibility, Detect Thoughts, Flaming Sphere
>Level 3
Dispel Magic, Counterspell, Fireball
>Level 4
Polymorph, Locate Creature
>Cleric
Literally identical to yours :^)
>Rituals
Detect Magic, Leomund's Tiny Hut (my DM hates this)

My favorite is Ancients, I played basically Gwalchmai from Hawk of May in a OotA campaign and it was super fun.

Get Ancients. Resistance to damage from spells is a great thing to have.

What's the best race and why is it Kobold?

Because they can change their sex and that is my fetish.

Detect Thoughts and Disguise Self every day? I suppose Curse of Strahd is the kind of campaign that demands that stuff.

Otherwise, seems like a good list! Very similar to my build.

I'm tempted by Devotion since it's basically the standard paladin. But Ancients sounds like it could be fun. I haven't had any of my players roll up a paladin so I haven't seen how they play in 5e yet.

Our groups are very RP heavy. I know I won't take Vengeance. It feels....wrong.

Well, I was slightly leaning Ancients but that settles it. Now to figure out how a middle-aged farmer whose family was murdered in front of him, minus his daughter off on her apprenticeship, became an Ancients paladin.

>character 1
a reckless, heavy drinking dragonborn paladin who is on the hunt for his murderous brother
>character 2
dirty slav mountain dwarf barbarian who is trying to fulfill his fathers dying wish

>Kobold
That's a funny way to spell Goliath. Then again I'm originally a Veeky Forumsizen so that could explain it.

Depends on what you use the tool for.
For example, the act of hammer-on-anvil smithing might call for str+smith's tools proficiency, but repairing fine details in your armor might call for dex+smith's tools proficiency.

Bro, the whole thing is salvageable. Player 3 didn't do shit, she barely participated and just annoyed everyone by talking when others were trying to play. She just played an elf druid because she thought Marisha on critical role was cool.

It sucks because we were so close to closing out my character's arc. Apparently an aspiring lich had found the grail and was going to use it as his phylactery. We had just arrived in the area he had taken control of - think of like the Von Carsteins in Warhammer Fantasy. That's basically what he was doing.

+1 for ancients. Loads of flavor and if your DM is nice and gives you a holy avenger you laugh at spellcasters.

Cool!

You do realise that when this one dies mine will become the new thread right?

My character is a tortle druid of the coast. he speaks real slow and is always stoned.

His ultimate goal is to travel to the planar realm of water and surf the biggest wave.

Using the fluff in Ancients alone you can spin it as he wants to help people in the world feel joy and to protect them from knowing the loss he does. Going from place to place helping people with their worries and troubles while trying to also help them see the brighter side of things even if he doesn't get to experience it that much anymore.

>My character is a tortle druid of the coast. he speaks real slow and is always stoned.
>His ultimate goal is to travel to the planar realm of water and surf the biggest wave.

I love this, but the Plane of Water is only endless water? I don't think it has a surface which could have waves.

>She just played an elf druid because she thought Marisha on critical role was cool.
Jesus Christ I didn't think they were real outside Tumblr.

Is Xanatar samurai good choice for a subclass? Wasn't UA samurai better? Why did they change it?

>Implying
Also by that time I'll be home and doing other things so no skin off my nose.

Well, until now i saw no reason why 5eg would like kobolds so much, but this is convincing argument.

I don't know how anyone could watch that show and not find her irritating.

UA Samurai was better. I do not think Xanathar's Samurai is bad, however. Just worse than the UA.

Now you know what it means to be a Grognard.

>UA Samurai was better. I do not think Xanathar's Samurai is bad, however. Just worse than the UA.

But why did they changed it?

>is xanathar samurai good?
they very much demasculated the archetype. some nerfs were needed, but they went really heavy handed with the nerfs
>why did they change it?
two turn advantage on a XBE+sharpshooter build was absolutely bonkers for ranged nova-ing.

I already know I'm going to RP as him being extremely protective of those he cares about to the point that if need be, he'll throw his life away if it guarantees they continue to live.

The big issue is how did he go from farmer -> paladin.

Maybe while trying to find his daughter and her wizard master, he was attacked by bandits and was saved by a paladin who brought him back to his order to recuperate from his wounds. After that, queue the standard "wow, this place is cool, these people are nice, their order makes sense, I should join" stuff.

>But why did they changed it?
The most obvious change was that the auto-advantage thing only applies to weapon attacks. I think this is to prevent warlocks from taking it for Eldritch Blast.

Your guess is as good as mine.

Is there any chance to buff the samurai a bit ?

Anyone can become a paladin if they feel strongly enough about something, user. If you're talking about the weapons and armor training, yeah, your idea is fine.

Opinions on the new subclasses? I only found the wacky wild magic wizard interesting, not really great but potentially fun to play. Too bad they will tend to all be gnomes and annoying. (Not all gnomes are annoying, just most of the ones I have had to endure.)

This. Also, you could make him more connected to nature and such, since the Oath has some of this too. Maybe a powerful dryad offered to help you raise your daughter while you in turn help her protect her forest.

Doing point buy as a Mountain Dorf Paladin. This character will be starting around probably 6 or 7, so there is room for an ability score improvement. I was thinking

>STR 15 (17)
>DEX 10
>CON 14 (16)
>INT 10
>WIS 10
>CHA 13

Then on the ability score improvement take +1 to STR and +1 to CHA. I'm not the best at optimizing point buy or even really how to stat out a Paladin so I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions. Should I alter the stats to justify a feat that may work out better? I'll probably be using a long sword + shield.

the main thing is fighting spirit
UA fighting spirit
Bonus Action, advantage on all attacks for the current turn and your next turn
resistance to slashing/piercing/physical damage for the same duration
3 uses per short rest

Xanathars
Bonus Action
Adv on all attacks for current turn, gain temp hp that scales as you level up
3 uses per long rest

Vengeance Paladin is solely for the, "See evil? I must Smite Evil!" folks.

The farmer saw his family killed and was left for dead. Got nursed back to health by a druid, ranger, or other wilderness type person. Realized that the people who killed his family were still around, started questing to get strong enough to stop them from doing any other such evil deeds to another family and the land, which they probably burn and salt afterwards if this is an evil group.

While we're on the subject of XGE fighters, can I voice my displeasure with the Cavalier? Its awesome, and its flavorful, but its completely dependent on who your enemies attack.

I've played 4 sessions with 9 combats as a Cavalier so far and I haven't been able to use born to the saddle (mounts are prohibitively expensive in this campaign) or unwavering mark (everything I mark attacks me right back). All I got out of this subclass was the animal handling skill. Cool stuff, /5eg/.

Could be spun several ways, being a farmer he was a kind soul who was know to nature spirits or what have you in the area and they helped him recuperate and taught him what these old oaths were to help pull him out of his funk or give him direction in life. As for the weapon and fighting could be he was conscripted for a short stint in the military or was a guard for a bit and didn't like it so left for the country. Also like said your idea of the standard other paladin saving him works.

A sun soul monk who's whole family was killed by a vampire
He doesn't want vengeance he wants justice

Can you grapple melee weapons with 10ft range?

I should be able to pull the spear out of that stupid goblin's hands.

Oh, Detect Thoughts was because Strahd (well, our DM) was doing some goofy shit with party member look-a-likes. DT was so I could interrogate them and figure out which was real and which was the impostor.

Disguise Self is mostly so I can fuck with Strahd. He does crazy shit when you run around looking like Ireena or (better yet) Tatyana.

The problem is they are still bound to be good people in general and help those in need. They are only allowed to rip and tear one specific enemy, everyone else must be treated as a standard paladin would.

Welcome to why class features shouldn't rely on DM fiat or campaign setting and should be more forgiving in being able to play in nearly any campaign.

Spears have 5ft range, unless you're talking about a halberd or pike which have the heavy property. Goblins, being small creatures, can't use weapons with the heavy property without suffering disadvantage on all their attack rolls.
