Reposting then. Need to do edge highlights, base, and probably redo fire. But opinions and critique on it so far?

What lights do you guys use for painting? My desk lamp is too dim and I’m looking to get something better.

First time doing custody and trying something new doing "50 shades of gold",armor so far is retributor armour base, mixed shade layer of reikland flesh shade and druchii violet, highlight auric armor gold, then going to add liberator gold for sharp edge highlight
Swords are currently same scheme as the armor for the handle, and gehennas gold for the blade but still wip of course
Bentley Long
I'm sorry friend but this is a little too blurry to tell much from.
Can you try putting him in the fridge and setting the camera down on something flat?
Jonathan Edwards
which ones are the new and the old? They look about the same

So I'm having trouble deciding on which vendor to buy bases from. I'm in the states, so I'd rather not pay for oversea shipping if at all possible. Any suggestions?
Tyler Gomez
Should I buy one of those citadel painting handles?
Anthony Wood
A beer bottle and some blu-tak does literally the same thing.
Christian Torres
So Im selling my brother's old ass dark elves and the buyer asked me if I could paint them for him for a little fee. How much should I take from a table top quality paintjob per 1 miniature?
Daniel Nelson
20 doll hairs
Jonathan King
fucking space hulk (alternate BA color scheme)
Lucas Peterson
Depends. How fast can you paint them? How much do you think your time is worth? How good do you think your paintjobs are?
Christopher Martinez
Is it true that GW spray isn't actually a primer? What's the difference? Bought some mechanicus standard gray spray.
Jose Morales
it will not be worth your time to paint them
Alexander Myers
Not the fastest painter and not the greatest. At most im somewhat mediocre table top quality painter at best.
Gabriel Evans
Tried Kit-bashing a Death Guard demon prince out of an old Rat ogre, think it turned out pretty good.

Why is johnny the /wip/ mascot?
Who is he exactly?
Eli Gonzalez
at the moment it just looks like a rat ogre, I think it needs some blisters, pox marks and the like, maybe a giant swollen belly like the old plauge marines have
Parker Ward
organs need to be coming out of that tummy

Primer contains a product besides pigment that actually bonds with and seals over the material of the model. For some it's a resin, for others it's polyurethane.
Using a primer helps prevent your paint from coming off as you handle the miniature. Although if you don't touch your model much during painting (for example if you're using a handle), and you use a clear coat afterwards, you don't always need to worry about it.
Aiden Kelly
To answer the question though, no, GW spray cans are not primers. They're technically sold as an "Undercoat". They help achieve an even base without using an airbrush, but they won't increase the hold your paint has on the mini.
Juan Thomas
But I'm seeing contradictory reports. Everyone at this link says it will work fine as one.
Shit, you're right. Gotta grab some more greenstuff soon
Carter Scott
Sisters of Silence. Building enough of them for an army. Now that they've been separated from custodes, since they have their own codes and all, y'all think sisters of silence will be getting that kinda love?
Jaxon Baker
backside
Aiden Ross
I'd toss a coin, it depends on whether GW realises SoB are a lost cause and focuses on an actually interesting army or if the 5 guys who play them whine enough.
Nolan Carter
Sisters of Battle 2.0
Ayden Nelson
DRILL YOUR FUCKING BARRELS YOU APE.
Xavier Davis
Nobody cared who he was before he became a meme.
Parker Young
I dunno, that's a big collage
Aiden Jones
I actually also play sisters of battle T_T
Parker Torres
You disgust me.
Leo Anderson
...t-the plasma pistol right? Cause you don't really need to drill those
Please tell me It was the plasma pistol.
Jonathan Brooks
I like drilled plasma pistols.
The bolt pistol is still in the holster on the new model so you can't see the barrel.
Chase Perry
I also drill my plasma, I just wanted you to feel better because that's happened to me every now and then. His has a little pilot light looking thing, right? It should probably have a hole If It does, but Worst case scenario drill it then pa it on primer?
Aiden Cook
People use regular 99c Walmart spray paint as primer too. That’s what it is, regular spray paint (just half the size and 15 bucks).
Jace Robinson
>People use regular 99c Walmart spray paint as primer too. Hey. that's me
Camden Murphy
But does it actually work? I don't want my shit flaking. I can't seem to find a right answer. Somehow GW doesn't actually make primer, army painter links, krylon is just spray as well at best and the nozzles suck at worst, who the fuck makes real spray primer?
Ethan Hernandez
I use rustoleum 2x ultra cover which works pretty great, but I’ve heard people use regular spray paint as primer just fine.
Luke Cox
I cannot find any of these non-specialist primers for sale online. It's always some other stupid variant.
Ryan Adams
Walmart, Home Depot, literally any hardware store. Heard mixed things about automotive primer, but I guess any auto shop as well.
Jackson Gray
>tfw normal Space Marine have been ruined for me now that I noticed they're all in tactical squat position Fuck
Michael Lewis
How can one achieve this gold, preferably with citadel paints
Colton Allen
>now that I noticed they're all in tactical squat position that's been like that since the arrival of the 2nd generation plastics back in 3rd edition in the early 90s. Calling you a slowpoke would be a complement.
If it really bothers you it's pretty easy to convert the legs into different poses though. Just cut them apart at the joint, repose and resculpt the soft armor with GS. Not a hard conversion to do. You'll find a few tutorials with a quick google search.
Gabriel Ramirez
Well I don't play Space Marines, so I never really paid attention. But with Primaris out, it's REALLY noticeable.
Jace Torres
Eh. The biggest problems the old marines have is imo that their legs are just too short. Their arms go down to their knees. Or maybe their arms are just too long. Either way the Primaris marines basically just fixed the proportion issues the marines had, using the head size as reference point if you will.
Jace Price
Just to finish the thought here: I really wish GW would have just have had the balls to have said, 'yeah these are truescale marines', instead of calling them something else in the background. And then they went and fucked up the bolters on those minis. One of the most iconic designs in 40k. The bolter rifles look like shit.
Jaxon Campbell
Get assault marines and deathwatch legs
Adrian Morales
I'm actually going crazy over this primer shit. Everything I read seems contradictory.
"GW is fine! I've used it for 20 years with no problem!" "GW is just spray paint and will rub off!"
"Krylon Camo is liquid gold!" "Krylon is shit, buy Rustoleum 2x!"
"Rustoleum goes on super thick and will kill all your details! Buy army painter!" "Army painter will arrive with no pressure! Buy GW!"
Luke Wright
Hello, working on a personal project, and a minor forray after ages into model conversions. A Castraferrum pattern Custodes Dreadnought. Thoughts?
Kayden Hill
Forgot to add, he's going to have the one arm with the powerfist holding the force halberd, the other arm has an assault cannon.
Adrian Scott
GW is fine, I'd only consider other brands if I was going to paint resin and metal miniatures. Don't bother if you are going to work only with plastic
Bentley James
2 coats of nuln oil over the gold oughtta do it.
Brody Lopez
Have you SEEN the shit people pass off as pro painted on ebay?
Eli Perry
Unfortunatly yes. On the other hand Im not delussional about my painting skills.
Christopher Taylor
I mean, they’re still 5x the price of regular primer. Guess it doesn’t matter too much unless you’re painting a lot of miniatures, but still.
Blake Gray
i dont understand why the bases are red
they take away from the colors on the model
David Davis
almost finished him
John Sanders
Post some of your shit. guarantee it's better than most of the stuff Ive seen failing that charge 3 bucks for troops, 5 for elites, and 10 for vehicles
Robert Miller
This is my latest work, but I put lots of time and effort to it make it as neat as possible.
Will try to make delves as fast as possible, even the guy said he just want some color on the models. So I'll do just base color, wash and drybrush on them. Maybe spend a bit more time on HQ troops. Thanks for the price range suggestion!
Tyler Campbell
Do you think a Tzaangor with dark blue/purpleish skin, kinda like a raven or crow, would look alright? Using the more Thousand Sons-ish armor color and blue skin but I want to add some more variety in my birds and their colors.
Ryder Harris
oh that's you? fuck charge him twenty gazillion apiece, you fine
Noah Ramirez
Haha, thanks for the encouragement! Will try to milk more money out of him.
Benjamin Sanders
Got a question about sprays. I've gotten Mechanicus Standard Grey, and the item description says to spray it over an undercoat, i.e. Chaos Black or Corax White. Won't this make me lose detail?
Ayden Miller
Slowly its all coming together... At least most of the black parts are all highlighted, next to wash the metallics and give white parts thinned down and controlled wash to bring some shadows down.
I've done some painting on comission to friends, I usually ask 1-3x the price of the minis depending on how many there are. But Ive never done armies, only Mordheim warband-level stuff. Month ago friend asked me to paint a skaven team for BB for him, I had one I did for myself but didnt play anymore, sold it to him for 60€. Models cost me 20€, so pretty nice profit.
Kevin Murphy
Primaris IW (and AL Johnny) user back here. Finished the captain for my bitterboys. Is he alright?
Ryder White
Thanks for the info aswell! Just got to an agreement of Delf Mordheim band for 65 euros. I think that is reasonable price
Nolan Thompson
>thought my Necron Compound was dried out >put water in it >it was supposed to be dried out
welp can I save this somehow?
Ayden Nguyen
take water out of it
Angel Wilson
nice, retrib armour is amazing

looks great

The helmet is neat. Is that a dark elf cape? how do you prepare it to fit?
Parker Flores
I'm trying to pull apart some Fantasy Flight Minis, I want to dissolve the glue and separate them, I just like an even coat over everything and get into those hard to reach places. Im boiling water, But im not sure how the plastic will go with say, Simple Green or Detol.
I had this problem with other Fantasy Flight board game models.
Jason Adams
Leave then in the freezer overnight. It will make the glue brittle and you can snap them apart.
For God's sake don't put plastic minis in boiling water.
Dylan Parker
Try freezing them. IIRC they use superglue (or something like it) instead of a solvent to glue them up. Freezing makes the glue brittle.
Logan Green
If you want. Super comfy, but as already mentioned you can make the much cheaper.
Carson Miller
can i use this to remove my nicely painted minis from their bases? will the rest of the joints return to normal?
Ian Nelson
Boiling that PVC shit FFG makes their minis out of probably won't do anything to 'em (not that you'd want to; its overkill for straightening bends).
Joseph Evans
Is Ironbreaker actually darker or brighter than Leadbelcher?
Henry Torres
lighter enough to notice it, not light enough for it to be jarring when layered over ironbreaker
Jose Thomas
It's brighter, but more important than the color is the function. Im realizing just now that Im retarded and the reason I have had so much trouble painting metallics on my minis is because I have been using a layer paint as a base coat.
Eli Green
That's because air temp, humidity, paint temp, age, storage, distance, angle, nozzle condition, bad batch, shake time, etc play big roles in the final quality of the finish. Makes trying to aggregate an overall fair comparison from different reviewers almost impossible.
Most stuff will do fine if it wasn't fucked up for months, or even years, in some non-climate controlled warehouse before you even got it. And the muzzle or can weren't fucked up in production. And then you make sure temp and humidity are good. Stand the can up in a bowl of warm water about half way to raise the can temp. Clean the nozzle every time you use it. Be sure you're spraying at a consistent distance out of any wind. Etc.
Prep is way more important than the difference between the major brands' options most of the time in my experience.
Jacob Robinson
this this this
and if you're unsure, for the love of god test it on something cheap or some old sprue before potentially ruining good models
Joshua Butler
Oh, and clean your models. Not only to remove anything left over from production (resin especially), but residue from your greasy little sausage fingers isn't helping either.
Juan Lopez
Okay. I'm getting a little bit tired of this "Just use krylon" bullshit that's going on in /wip/ right now. GW sprays deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that. I should know what I'm talking about. I myself bought a mechanicus standard grey from my flgs for £10 (that's about $15) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 months now. I can even coat oldmetal models with my rattlecan.
British chemists spent years working on the formula and adjusted it up to a million times to produce the finest primer known to mankind.
GW sprays last thrice as long as competitors and are thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a Krylon can prime, GW can prime better. I'm pretty sure a GW spray could easily prime a reaper bones mini with two thin coats.
Ever wonder why krylon never bothered expanding to Europe? That's right, they were too scared to fight GW and their complete market dominance.
So what am I saying? GW sprays are simply the best primer that the world has ever seen, and thus, should really be used in every project.
Hudson Gutierrez
Please /wip/ let's make this a pasta

H-he's a dark angel
Samuel Ramirez
>we wuz dark angels space negros will steal anything.
Jokes aside. The green does look a bit light. And apart from the hood there's nothing to make him look like a DA.
Dominic Perry
He had a banner but it broke off, plan on putting a decal on too. It might look a bit light because of how close it was to the lamp
Parker Murphy
Paint a sword in the cape and some heraldic. It'll look much better and reinforce his presence as a captain
