Mods are general these days and have been for a long time. You get board specific janitors but all mods are site wide.

The main problem is hiroshimoot. He does not give one single shit about this site apart from filling it up with malicious ads to make a profit. If he doesn't care, neither do the mods. Just look at what that swaglord cunt has done to /tv/.

As a magic player, yeah, there has been more shitposting in recent times. Almost every magic thread has someone showing off fakes or calling people retarded for buying expensive cards. The first question in every ask a judge thread is always "why do you suck so much dick".
The mtg legacy general went through a bout of bad shitposting a year or so ago but the thread came together, everyone agreed on a method of dealing with it (removing tripcodes and unneeded names and not replying to trolls) and it's been good since then (when someone is bothered to make a thread).

I haven't seen much in the way of jerking off celebrities, personally, and I've been ignoreing thinly veiled smut threads for years, that's nothing new.

So what can be done about it? If everyone just ignores the trolls, will they go away, or just argue amongst themselves?

I was a janitor on /v/ and I'm even in the leaks. Janitors would delete threads that were not acceptable to boards or get a mod's attention so someone could take care of it if it required more than a deletion. There's only so much a janitor can do, honestly. If someone isn't banned and is just deciding to shit up the board all the janitor can do is hope a moderator is on and forward it in IRC.

Veeky Forums is a wonderful place, and one of the best boards on this site. The only way to keep it that way is to be diligent. Remember those proxy threads? I posted in every single one of them, articulately, telling the stupid shitposters to fuck off. It may seem counter productive, but the only way to make Veeky Forums a great place is to be a great poster. The average crossboarder is retarded, but people on Veeky Forums actually have degrees, jobs, and lives, so we need to use that to keep us great.

Whenever there's a shitty thread make it into a good one. Whenever there's a shitposter, prove them wrong, make them look dumb, and ignore their samefagging. Whenever some spammer decides to go on a tirade, report that shit the second it breaks the rules and mods WILL fix it.

Veeky Forums is only as good as you want it to be, so let's make it the wonderful place we'd all love to post. We can't get rid of every shitter, but we can prevent most of them from staying too long.

My issue with the trends I've been seeing is a tendency to shut down discussion, any discussion, of any topic.

Pretty much the same but with different flavors of arguments and shitposting. Some people's shitposting has been banned since then and they treat the past as "the good ol' days." Others only remember the greentext stories that get passed around like broken whores, forgetting that those stories were few and far between. We still get greentexts like that every once in a while, but the culture around screencapping has changed so we don't really do that anymore.

I literally never did any quests, but at least shit was happening and sometimes you would get pure platinum.

Especially with the existence of filters and the catalog I have no idea why they are stilled banned.

People played tabletop games and made posts talking about their tabletop games while every so often, someone would make OC that would then be immortalized on 1d4chan for people to talk about, like Sir Bearington or Ruby Quest.

Also, the mods understood that the nature of tabletop games would often crossover into other mediums such as anime, video games, mythology, cartoons, comics, etc. so they were much more lax about people talking about "off topic" subjects and sometimes it'd give us some great shit, like the Super Mario (tabletop) RPG or the Zelda RPG.

Finally, we had smut. Glorious smut. And nobody cared because we were basement dwellers who enjoyed looking at women in bikini armor or discussing the logistics of banging a dragon milf in her cave while the rest of the party robbed her blind.

Always gives me a laugh when people demand quests back but have a loathing for generals, completely lacking the self awareness to see the hypocrisy. Then again, I saw a poster decrying generals who also said unironically "Veeky Forums was better when it was 50% WH40K threads". And I also saw someone say generals are bad because "they invite tripfags and circlejerks", which was even WORSE in quest threads. You can jump into a general anytime and get caught up to speed. You could never jump into a quest thread without reading a shitload of previous threads, and then you have to still compete with the regulars who always had priority over newcomers because most of the DMs were garbage.

Generals do no wrong. They're a convenient way to advertise where to get the material for the game being covered, they keep autism contained to a single thread, and they're easily filterable if you don't like a particular topic.

But when people are shitposting with purpose, ignoring them gets newfags to agree with their tirades, thus perpetuating them because they think this is a normal part of board culture. I've seen it happen on many many MANY boards already. The trick to diffusing it is to humiliate that poster, so uninformed lurkers who see the bait thread realize it's a bait thread, and don't want to associate with the shitposter because it creates a sense of displacement from the community.

What does all that mean? By calling out spammers for being spammers, then articulately proving them wrong, you're imposing board standards and establishing a paradigm of this board culture versus other board culture.
