I still have my beloved Moonclan Grots from the Battle for the Skull Pass, and they come with squared bases with a groove in the middle for inserting the model inside.

I don't know if I would be able to convert them to round bases so...

Is having round bases really that important?
Or could I play with some units of my army on square bases?

Interestingly, we know have the map for the locations around Shadespire, referencing the buried sea etc. (from the MP website)

Just put the squares on top of the rounds and use greenstuff or something similar to to disguise the square.

If I'm not mistaken, AoS does not force you to have a specific base size or shape, so you should be ok with square bases, lest you or your opponent get autistic about it.

square bases are fine. rules say use the base the model comes with.

Anyone got any advice for a new player, whose thinking about starting the game with the Tzeentch Arcanite box and an Ogroid Thaumaturge (because the models amazing)

Other options I've thought about is digging out my 6th edition ogre army, those floaty dwarf guys, or possibly death if they get something cool this year.

It's Mantic's version of Warhammer Fantasy. Pretty basic fantasy setting, but it's where a lot of Fantasy players migrated to since Mantic models are cheaper, they don't discriminate against you for using other companies models and the rules are actually balanced and pretty good.

I like the sound of beastclaw ogre alliance, would a start collecting plus iron blaster be a good place to start (my army is metal scrap launcher old). Do you need a hero or something to go with allied units like in 40k, I didn't look too hard into how list building works yet?

GW is upping their miniature scale so that no other model company would be compatible, but GW skeletons/Zombies are same scale with Mantic skeletons/Zombies. I think Mantic's Zombies were the thing that put them on the radar at first.

Its not formally cheating. But base size impacts the number of models that can pile in, and for models with long extremities, can fuck with any rule regarding being in range of something (i.e, rotating a model will change what its in range of even on a circular base).

But you count distances to models, not bases, no? And it's allowed to put models on top of each others bases to do so in melee, atleast according to the AoS faq?

Seriously, I've never seen a single game of AoS where people aren't measuring from base to base.

This rule is literally just there as a stopgap for salty WFB players so they could play AoS without having to rebase their whole army. Note that every post-aos kit uses rounds, and the older kits are gradually being repacked with rounds. Additionally, white dwarf has featured articles about converting WFB bases over to rounds for AoS. Its the new norm and standard.

Hopefully we see a grot soup tome to go with the fungoid shaman, a darkoath tome to go with the warqueen and an engineering guild (featuring dispossessed) to go with the lordinator.

You're in luck - round bases have slots too. Or, being as they're plastic, just clip the tab off and glue the model to the base.

Anyone here gonna try and write something for the Black Library submissions? I’m assuming since they are scrambling and redoing a lot of lore for it and actually explaining shit now, they are gearing up to start supporting the setting full force with novels and fluff, so any AoS stories have a pretty good chance I’d imagine.
