Session 0 - which happened off-stream - had them get a feel for how their characters worked and had them meet up for an odd job in this town.
Session 1 (episode 1) had them eventually meet up in a tavern after a night of rest and relative success with their respective jobs, and were invited to the circus, when an old guy in the audience got turned into a zombie and started attacking people.
Episode 2 was them trying to figure out how to clear their names and be allowed to leave town without suspicion, and it ended with the reveal that the "devil toad" in the circus was not just some deformed lizardman, but was actually a fiend of some kind. It then turned a pair of town guards into zombies and bounced out of the circus.

They are use to challenging fights. The real problem is that it has been a long while since they had a serious encounter at low levels. They've been level 5+ for so long I'd be surprised if even the better players have a good strat for the toad fight due to how few options they have to work with.

Monks are very effective front-liners at low levels. They only start to trail behind other martials after 5th level.
