I'll second that question. I was thinking of doing them as the walker as a single piece and the rider in two parts so I can more easily do the legs and inside of the coat.

I'm guessing the miniknights will be something like this:

It will be a nice model to fill out whatever points you have remaining after fielding your Knights. If it were around 150 (before carapace weapon perhaps) you could field three Knights and three of these little guys at 2000 points. I do wonder what FoC slot they will take though.

Because my friend GM-ing our little campaign originally had a pile of basilisks back there and I moved from my deployment forwards into there to not get blasted. Then my scouts rolled well and revealed it was a sorcerous glamour and the traitor guard assaulting the VIPs was actually thousand sons.

Guys, I am adding an ancient contemptor dread to my (second founding) chaos army, so the idea is that it has a ton of wear and tear, but on top of that, a fresh coat of paint to fit its new allegiance. How to do this so it looks good? Should I just base coat it, apply a ton of rust and chipping, then varnish, and then the "new" paint job on top?

At least keep the legs seperate, since painting the cables and the insides of the thigh armour plates is a royal pain when fully assembled.
I fully built my first two before painting them, doing another two now. Didn't have much trouble with the riders at all since they're in quite a wide stance, but I imagine that getting the folded-over cloak might be a pain if you need to do the lining a different colour. You have to push them down pretty firmly on the seats to get them to click into place with their feet on the stirrup-plate things, which is a pain.

I play Blood Angels and I need some flyboys as flak. Even if they aren't gonna kill anything by themselves, as long as they can tie up shooty units for my DC/SG to get there, they're worth their salt in a fight.

I don’t understand your question. If it’s been repainted recently you won’t see the wear and tear. What you could do is have the new coat be peeling off and revealing the original colours underneath. Look into the hairspray technique.
