Aside from the Mystic and Artificer, is there any other class you think is needed in 5e that can't be done as a subclass?

So I'm thinking of putting together a long campaign that'll take the players across the Elemental Planes, starting in the City of Brass but eventually going to all four of them. Probably will run from levels 5-15, might start lower or go higher.

How does this look for a bunch of Encounter Tables for Elemental Air? Since Elemental Air has very little in it other than, well, air, that's the one I'm most concerned about getting right.

Any reason for no SCAG backgrounds?

>is there any other class you think is needed in 5e
No, we've got plenty and they all have plenty of archetypes. What I want is more options within the archetypes/classes, like more Battlemaster maneuvers, Barbarian totems, Wot4E disciplines, Fighting Styles, and different ways to use existing options like a separate Martial Arts for the Monk or a different Sneak Attack for Rogues that could inflict conditions instead of damage.
Then again I also wanted revised ranger to get an official release so I won't hold my breath.

Possibly due to phb+1 rules

I just make an Artificer and i was wondering.. What prevent my 6th level alchemist to make acid using alchemy jug, pour it into my bag of holding until it's full, ride my mechanical giant eagle then turn the bag inside out and spilling 500 pounds of acid into my enemy?

Nothing, that's a cool idea for a one-off weapon.

How do you guys feel about this campaign pitch?

"In a world of bronze and brimstone. Fire and War. A guild of militant mages declared war on the setting's deities. In the aftermath the critical domains of dozens of deities were left unclaimed. To maintain the balance the deities of war and death, for you can not easily kill either, were forced to take up these domains.

Now the nations of the world must deal with the growing pangs of the likes Mictlan the Bloodsworn as his followers turn in their swords for guild caravans and ledgers. Where once he demanded the blood sacrifice of a virgin from every land on the continent, he offers general store and adventuring gear services."

>What is preventing me from putting acid without any kind of container inside of my bag of holding?

Having boiled down your question to its most basic component, I'm going to step back and see if you can answer that one yourself.

I feel like you would want to line your bag of holding with something that the acid can't eat through.

> for you can not easily kill either

...as opposed to the other gods, who were pushovers?

Because Xanathar's Guide bring no support for those backgrounds in their This Is Your Life chapter.

I'm having a hard time making sense of this. It needs a rewrite.

Euphoric as fuck also

I also think we need a STR unnarmed barbarian archetype.

Interesting in theory, but the last bit that had a glimpse of it in practice leaves a lot to be desired.

>Mictlan
Anyone who plays dominions were probably be bothered by this.
Its kind of eh as a plot tbqh. What's the campaign exactly?
Right now it just seems like narrative masturbation

I can always put the acid into glass vial first, but the item description for bag of holding said "if the bag is overloaded, pierced, or torn, it ruptures and is destroyed" nothing say anything about acid.
How much damage will it inflicted? a normal vial of acid weight one pound deal 2d6 acid damage, and it's not a magic damage, multiple it by 500 then in theory i can one shot a Tarrasque.

Isn't it a pocket dimension?

So if these wizards that are powerful enough to kill gods exist, why does the party exist? Seems like there wouldn't be any trouble with a guild of God killers just hanging around.

It's still made of bag

No, it's made of Holding. Dumbass.

>it ruptures and is destroyed
>500 pounds of acid get spread across the astral plane
Yes nothing will be extremely pissed off by this.

Why did the mages want to kill the gods? And if they were so successful, what happened to them? Was there anything stopping them from taking on the domains of the other deities?

The description for the bag wasn't made with the idea that someone would be pouring raw acid into it in mind.

Yeah they probably didn't expect people to be stupid enough to waste it on that instead of carrying a bunch of supplies the party can use.

Interesting idea sort of but unless your DM is retarded he probably won't let it work.
Why would your character have an in-game reason to carry around a flood of acid?

The magical properties of the bag are destroyed by being pierced or torn, it doesn't specify that the damage would have to come from the outside and it's hardly a giant logical leap to say that equivalent structural damage to the bag would net the same result, even if the method by which it was damaged is different.

>Due to the way the bag of holding works
>Reach in and think of what you need
>Hand melts because it's just acid that was poured into it

Other than Protector Aasimar Zealot Barbarian what are some race/class combos that have spending a full turn powering up before I murder most things?

I like to imagine that in long running settings that have had bags of holding for a while, the Astral Plane begins to resemble Earth's upper atmosphere after so many years of space exploration. Deadly natives aside, the dangers of the plane come from millions upon millions of caltrops just kind of floating around at various speeds, along with weapons, armor, treasure, and several extremely pissed off BBEGs who never learned Plane Shift.

Hexblade Bladelock
Gotta get out that Darkness/Curse out.

A well outfitted caster can spend many rounds powering up with buffs.

Also devotion paladin
>Action to give +to hit
>Action to use bless on self
>Or bonus action to .. Shield of faith? Or a smite.
Or vengeance
>Action to use bless
>Bonus action to get advantage against a target

Well, the idea just flashed now, usually my character using alchemy jug for water, beer and occasionally mayonnaise for my Lizard-Folk Barbarian and bag of holding is used as potion and equipment storage. I think my DM will agree if i store some bucket of oil instead, my character is fairly rich because the DM post lot of quest that require multiple tool proficiency.

I'd still love to see the Shadowcaster redone for 5e.

Got a mildly serious question. Playing CoS with 5 PCs and we are currently Lv4. We got the fortunes read and found out the item that will help us is in a Windmill / Old Bonegrinder.

Ismark and Ireena begged us not to go in there because it is cursed and haunted about whatever else with those pastry trading bitches.

The 3 Chaotic Stupid characters want to go attack the mill, at night, without the two NPCs. I am trying to best rp my lawful evil character as someone that just wants to survive this hellscape.

I would rather not have a TPK (the DM said from the start he isn't going to be pulling any punches) but the game is basically over if the 4 of them go running in there and die and my 'cowardly' warlock doesn't do anything.

So, do I just follow along and make sure I bring a new character sheet or let the 4 of them die by themselves?

>playing an evil character
>in CoS

I'd let it slide, because the time required to prepare such a weapon would be more than enough for the ol' French Kaiju to destroy most of a nation.

not to mention collateral damage.

just avoid getting in the thick of it, and book it when the rest of them die.

When will we get a blood mage subclass for the wizard?
I'd even take a blood sorcerer

Hmm... tough question actually.

On one hand your character seems like the type to not want to run into a place filled with hags and die... and living would allow your character to meet (hopefully) less stupid characters and still know what is gong on in the pocket plane as well as where you need to go as per the fortunes.

On the other hand... if you're in a party with a bunch of stupid players, I'm assuming playing CN characters, then you can bet their new characters won't listen to you and they'll just keep throwing these characters at the windmill until they "win".

That said, the DM also should have mentioned that just because you guys are "given a quest" it doesn't really mean "go there now" and that certain areas in Barovia are definitely not meant for level 4 characters.

My advice... maybe talk OOC about how if even the people that live in this world are too afraid to go near the place, that it might not be the best idea to do so until you've got a better chance of surviving.

Also... attacking a haunted place at night is stupid, you go in during the day, duh, /grins/

What's your favorite Wizard School flavor wise? Not talking about mechanics

For me it's Enchanting

I don't know the inner workings of those witches/hags. Would they chase Ismark, Ireena and myself down? Also, the campaign is sort of over at that point anyhow, right?

Never, there's no way to balance it

>stab yourself to empower a spell
Why do you think it can't be balanced?

Never because it's a stupid gimmick and everyone knows it.

>I cast Disguise Self.
>Silent Image.
>Minor Illusion (sound).
>Mage Armor.
>False Life.
>Pact Weapon.
Ok. I'm ready to fight.
>Hex.
>In the name of the moon, I'll punish you.

It'll either be released as a Wizard tradition that does practically nothing to make itself actually feel like a unique archetype tied to blood magic, or it will get a single UA Sorcerer archetype that kicks ass flavorfully while sucking dick mechanically and is never referenced again because it's not a wizard.
Which would you prefer?

Divination

>"lol muh lucky halfling portent cheese"

I bring tarot cards to the table and in tavern scenes offer to do readings for NPCs. It's an interesting way for our band of hired skill to meet clients who are already inclined to believe that one party member has the answers to whatever issue they have.

Healing is cheap

My DM allows UA so I'd be okay with the sorcerer.
but I unironically like that gimmick

How does this sound as a weapon?

Thunderstrike
Whip (Requires attunement)

This whip, formed of a long set of mithril chain links, is imbued with elemental energies from the plane of air, whenever you deal damage using this weapon you deal an additional 1d4 thunder damage.

As a bonus action you can amplify the energies within the weapon by aligning the rune-etched rings upon the weapon's handle, the damage dealt when you attack with this weapon is increased to 2d4 for 1 minute or until ended using a bonus action.

This weapon has 4 charges, and regains 1d4 charges at dawn. As part of an attack using this weapon, you may expend a charge to create a burst of sound, all creatures within 5ft of the target take the weapons bonus damage. The target and any creatures within 5ft of it must make a strength saving throw (DC 8+Dex+Prof) or fall prone.

For those characters, yes. But new people are constantly brought into Barovia, just means you'd likely skip over doing Death House again, and hope that Ireena and Ismark make it the rest of the way on their own. Since they most definitely won't be sticking around for the windmill stuff if you guys stop there.

As far as the witches/hags go... They theoretically shouldn't chase you guys down, but... depends on the DM I suppose.

Diviner. I've always loved the fortune teller trope, and it mixes a little of that with someone who has a variety of ways to gather information. Information is the most valuable resource in any world, and someone who has easier access to it than anyone else will never be useless.

Help me out here boys
I'm looking for a word that means the opposite of emancipation, but isn't as direct as enwlavement or press-ganged

I'd name it Thunderlash
And for what party level were you intending it?

Thesaurus

just make it reduce your HP total or something

subjugation?

I like the idea of an INT-based healer that doesn't rely on magic. A friend and I tried designing one called the Physician, who has specialties in surgery, pills, stimulants, and mad science. They're a bit like an Alchemist in that they require a fair number of materials for their abilities, mainly potions and healer's kits. Their surgical precision means they can also target various body parts to give their attacks some kind of extra effect. Usually something like reduced speed.

My party took on the hags at level 4, with just 3 (effective) people
It honestly depends on your party comp and how zerg-rushy and munchkin your DM is.

>its another "the barbarian (male) and Cleric (male) are making love at the campsite" episode

I'm not sure, if it ever gets weak for a party I could always bump up its charges.

It was meant to be something that scaled fairly well.

>DM turns to me during post-session talk
>'You did some interesting things today that I did not expect. Next session is definitely give you some big options in terms of character developement. I'm looking forward to next time'
>I did nothing out of ordinary
What did he mean by this

Yeah no shit, can't find any antonyms that don't directly reference enslavement

Subjugation is good, but I think it represents more of a mental oppression rather than physical, lock-and-key type encapturement

How many times are you going to post this again?

Incarceration

Incarceration? Indenture? Confinement?

I....Haven't posed this before? Who else has?

servility, subjection, thralldom, enthrall

Unlawful indentured is perfect, cheers lads

How fast do you think Magic Missiles travel? Should they be instantaneous, or slower moving so you can see them?

instantaneous

I always pictured it as some kind of laser, because it strike all targets no matter far or near at the same time.

I imagine them as white wisps that move in a curvy zigzag trajectory (and can curve and home further to always hit targets), fast as arrows but not so fast so that using a Shield react makes sense.

I'd say they should be fast, but not instanteneous, since you can use you reaction to cast Shield and defend against them after they have been launched.

I always thought it was more like a missile barrage.

>not barbarian (male) and female (male) cleric

That sounds more like Eldritch Blast.

literally force, can't been seen no matter how quickly it travels

...

Have any of you every started a group with your friends only to realise some of them are absolute trash players?

They're not moderately fast, red colored and use Baldur's Gate sound.

I imagined it as the Itano Circus.
youtube.com/watch?v=BzXfVgYCxWI&ab_channel=Cacophanus

I've never really risked it.
But I know that one one them would probably be That Guy (Female)

>What did he mean by this
you survived

How would you guys run a combat encounter that isn't really a combat encounter?

Like let's say a level 1 party is currently residing in a city and the city gets attacked approached by massive monsters that want to breach the city walls. Your party decides instead of running that they want to help the townsguard fortify the gates and set up ballistas to shoot at them.

How would you handle this since it's not actually a normal battle but revolves more about protecting the "health" of your city?

>friends thinks D&D would be fun
>sure, why not
>session 1
>we arrive at a small town after a long week's travel having escorted wares from a larger city
>walk to tavern, random guard tells us to keep our eyes sharp, weird things have been happening lately
>The Rogue - "I want to pickpocket the guard!"
>The Ranger - "I want to use my reaction to grapple the thief before he attempts to pickpocket the guard
>oh boy...
>later on, in the tavern
>The Sorcerer - "I want to find a young, attractive looking boy"
>Everyone else - "Uhhhh ... That's weird."
>session only went downhill from there.

The EPoA has floating islands. You could have a few encounters there that aren’t flight-related.

Are there female orcs
I need to know for my half orc backstory

RP and skill checks

My group's got some quirks. One guy can't roleplay very well. He acts like he's omniscient, and needs to be told off about it from time to time.

His brother plays well but is very mechanics-driven, so when he does things he treats it like a checklist of tasks in an rpg. not necessarily bad but a little more stilted and less organic than the rest of the table. I probably do things pretty similar, actually. I try to stay in character but it's a little harder now that my guy is acting like another guy he barely knows.

you need to burn your group to the ground

Considering you can use a shield spell to block them even if you haven't seen the spell being cast, there's probably a slight delay.

I left once the short homebrew campaign (we failed it super hard within 4 sessions) was over and haven't looked back.

They're great guys in literally any other context, but they are definitely edgy memelords when roleplaying.

There's not really any official info about the gender of orcs, though almost all the official art depicts them as male. Pretty sure nobody would blink at your character having an orc mom or sister or whatever.

Orcs don't grow on trees user.

At least not in most settings.
