>Thread Question
Is anyone going to try and brew something now that the format seems more open? Maybe just try to get some wins at standard showdown/FNM?

People see him as the 2-3 must-have for merfolk decks. Everyone from my LGS that plays merfolk having buyer's remorse. Merfolk is only good until your opponents start playing removal.

Are boros dinosaurs any good? I drafted them at one point and I didn't want the cards to go to waste so now I have a makeshift standard deck.

Exactly. Imo going really wide + having backup counters to deal with settle/fumigate ends up being better, but IDK. I'm getting one or two for sure if he goes down, but Kopala's doing a lot more work for me

also nobody expects ghalta in merfolk

gruul > boros

Trouble is, kumena demands you use deeproot waters. And seeing as they are both 3 cost, and the fact that deeproot has 0 impact on turn 3 which is such a pivotal turn in lots of games. And I just can't get behind that, I would rather go hole hog aggro and pray to sit in some counterepells to stop board wipes and and swift wardens for spot removal

I'm just playing the best deck in the format, don't mind me
// 60 Maindeck

I probably need to update the sideboard though

next time please use tappedout/deckstats, please

Imo approach/gpg decks are probably going to be played more after the bans, maybe add a couple spell pierces when you update the sideboard

How's angrath been working for you?

Hahahaha! Standard!
Better yet, hahaha, MAGIC!

...

Have someone that runs the 1 cost, pay 7 sac to destroy a permanent. Is a cockblock for turn 7 approach.

Vampire token and something to make revel in riches works.

this? how

are Ally decks still standard?

nop, bfz block and soi block rotated out

A shame, I miss Grim Flayer

MTG is for pedophiles

Feminist allies, yes.

Now that's fucking burn spell user

I wish this wasn't funny but goddammit it is because it rings so true.

G/R-Monster & B/R or Grixis Pirates

Bought a RamunapRed deck two weeks ago and a playset chandras last week, so now I try to figure out where to go from there.

How do I selesnya dinos

Ramp into big dinos, beat face with zetalpa

>want to play merfolk since ixalan
>get all the cards early except for kumena
>consider kumena to be trash and possibly a sideboard card for grindy matchups
>play some merfolk on mtg arena
>every game I have kumena is 10000 times better than games I don't draw him
>Kumena is now almost 20 eurodollars a piece
>you need 4 of them

Eh, I still have my GB snek deck... And I even got Jadelight Ranger for pennies early...

Because fish players are a cult.
I personally hadn't played Standard since RTR-THS but bought into vampires because you can build 6 different decks with pretty much the same base.
Went 3-1 on thursday SCG Game Night with Mono White Monument and 4-1 on FNM with WB Aggro. Still adjusting my SB tech and gameplay because I don't know shit about most things Standard yet.

I think merfolk will stabilize into a decent deck soon, but you arent wrong. Removal heavy decks are painful. Just have to try to sweetspot the counters in the sideboard and try to outtempo.

post BUG Scarab God lists

Grixis is better. Wedge mana is shit.

Is there any primer on Grixis Energy yet? Also, is the version with 4x Phoenix in main just a meme or legit?

>Grixis Energy
For one, that name is fucking stupid since the deck just happens to run three energy cards as pure value cards with no actual energy sub-theme/production.

don't call it energy or the kids will get triggered and call for a ban

Playing Grixis midrange.
Hating GPG and Approach, more generally just uninteractive bullshit decks.
Brewing maybe Boros aggro or fish, though I've been pretty underwhelmed with the tribe so far for the same reasons other anons have mentioned.

try champion of wits 2x, you won't regret it
also gonti is bad at the moment, now that energy decks basically died

GB Snek or GB Explore

Snek.

>Playing
G/W Aggro- it was skimming some tourney undersides for a while, then eventually dropped off...
but then the fucking overalls came to town.

Having some more reliable cheap removal like Baffling End should be nice. Losing Immolating Glare, Declaration in Stone, Stasis Snare, Blessed Alliance really hurt white for the last few months.

That's a great suggestion and also very true. My deck runs almost no removal in the mainboard, so Baffling End *definitely* has some sideboard applications.

>I update and play this:
tappedout.net/mtg-decks/respect-mah-authoritah/

Might be worth dropping Sacred Cat for Skymarch Aspirant.

explore with the snek because sneks add extra counters to your explore

Is ravenous chupacabra good enough to throw up sultai merfolk for the sole purpose of running that and journey to eternity mainboard?

I don't think it is worth it to splash a color for a 2BB single-target-removal and a reanimation tool, that you can only use if you practically already lost the game. Especially since you need the space for a couple of bounce and counterspells.

If we had banned Torrential Gearhulk after the first month of Standard, how much better would this format have been?

>Was running Grixis Control for a few sets
>Quit Standard a few months ago
>Temur Energy is killed, Grixis Midrange is King
>Only missing a few key cards to tune the deck up

Trying to decide if it'd be worth it.

2 fucking booster boxes and a bundle and not one fucking Kumena and yeah I wanted to make a silly little merfolk deck because I don't like dinos or vamps. Fuck you WOTC and your fucking shitty distribution!!! Rage quitting this weekend and selling all my useless mtg cardboard to the store and picking up some Warhammer models or something fun.

ps FUCK YOU WOTC!

I'm on a slightly-less-than midrange right now and its working out well: tappedout.net/mtg-decks/29-01-18-ZMF-grixis/

>he bought lottery tickets

8x16/36 = 3.55 boxes to find a single one.
Please don't pick up Warhammer if you can't do math.

wow, it's like you don't understand probabilities or something
also
>buying boosters to open, ever

I've heard talk about an Enigma drake deck in standard. Is it remotely viable, and if I build it should I run Compelling Argument to aggressively heap my own spells into my graveyard?

Just bought into Grixis Midrange. Any tips how to play the deck? Remove their creatures and eventually outplay them with S-God?

if you are doing that, there is 0 reason you aren't running constrictor to make +1/+1 counters rain from the heavens. So go nuts

I just got accepted into the Arena closed beta.

I haven't touched Magic since playing a couple standard sealed drafts in 2015, what am in for?

jank everywhere since you can only use XLN and RIX

teeny fliers with favorable winds and RG dinos are the real shit

My friend is really trying hard to get me into Magic, but while I want to learn, I’d prefer to not strain our friendship with “trying to teach and getting annoyed” shit.

Is there a good resource to actually learn and practice proper card play and flow and stuff? He made me a proxy deck (using that Mardu Vehicles deck as a base) so I can practice, but I don’t have any card shops near me to actually learn, and I feel his use of very annoying control decks would just make learning from him annoying.

It's not super dominant, it just has pretty even matchups across the board, and shits on the tribal decks with it's huge suite of removal.

>mfw I opened a foil Kumena in one of my Standard Showdown prize packs

Dump all of your energy into drawing cards with Glint-sleeve, making thopters with Whirler should only be used as a backup plan when you're falling behind. Try and use your Chandras to keep pushing out threats while leaving mana up for removal more than for card advantage. Really, the only thing the deck has trouble dealing with is Carnage Tyrant since you need to side in Doomfalls and keep their board empty to kill the damn thing.

Cheap removal and riddleform

Don't run self-mill, just run Censor, Opt, and Chart a Course along with some burn.

turbo aggro tribal shit
just try a couple games and you'll see
probably the worst format i've ever played

Is the new set any fun to draft? Or should I just save my tickets to wait for a cube to start on MtGO?

How viable is it to build a Standard deck solely out of cards I've drafted?

It's a lot more fun than triple IXA and I was one of the few people still defending it. Here, the 'ascend' mechanic means you can focus less on tribal elements and just build want you want.

>Tribal Gremlin Fling

I like your style user.

Magic duels (free on steam) helped me get a good grip on the basics.

Are Vampires not competitive or do streamers and writers just not want to play them cause WotC says they're the evil whitey colonialist tribe?
Looking at SaffronOlive's games it's clear he didn't want to play the tribe and was misplaying hardcore. And other have just theorycrafted random lists and not even played them.

They're decent, but like the other tribes, maybe tier 2 at best. Vampires also has the most potential builds, with mono-white monument, token heavy with a Stockpile shell, tribal aggro, etc.

>favorable winds
literally best card in Ixalan.

>Arena beta
>haven't played magic in years

Absolutely nothing until Dominaria comes out, sitting on some cards that I think are undervalued so I don't get fucked with their eventual price spike.

Dominaria isn't gonna change shit. It'll be another underpowered set with too much focus on limited and zero chance to compete against Kaladesh Block.

What may change the game for Standard is the Core Set, but by then we'd be at three months from rotation so it won't matter much.

True. In any case some stuff might shine when Kaladesh and Amonkhet rotate. I still don't like that the latter is gonna go too, I think it's much better than Kaladesh, and would have been interesting if it was straight after SoI instead of KLD being the turd between two somewhat interesting sets.

I also like that idea and have mulled it over for a while. I'm sure I'll test the Aspirant, but Cat's Embalm is super good with Appeal / Authority and the lifelink is nice since we have a fair amount of pump spells.

An argument *for* Aspirant is that it can fly, which is one the the reasons Aethersphere Harvester is one of the best cards in the deck- but my questions are:
1) is Embalm still better
2) will I be Ascending reliably

Cat always does her job whereas Aspirant has a requirement to meet.

I too wish Kaladesh had rotated instead of Shadows. Shadows-Amonkhet-Ixalan would've been a fantastic Standard.

I don't think Dominaria is gonna shine on it's own against Ixalan block either, despite being relatively weak having more cards for it's archetypes invariably makes it more powerful. Specially if Dominaria is in fact an enemy-colors block like spoileranon said.

whatever is at the top of mtggoldfish

Interested in this too, played BUG constrictor before bans and still have Hostage Taker and Scarad Gods waiting to be used.

Should I just change into BG Counters?

>tfw haven't gotten to do any drafts, as there were only 4 people in on last FNM and this week's EDH FNM

what's the best ixalan-only decks for mtga?

Wanted to build deadeye tracker/GB explore deck but it's pretty trash

I've played some, my favorite by far is Vamps, though that is because I have 2 Elenda from packs.
Naya Dinos splashing for that Enchantment that gives +1/+1 and vigilance is cute too

Vampires of Favorable Flying Little Shit.

yeah vamps seem cool, played once and won vs dinosaurs and they had at least one of each big dino but played pretty shitty.
conquistards too strong for polyraptor, etali and ghalta

Adanto Vanguard+Mavren Fein+Slaughter The Strong against deck with 2 lords out is one of the best feelings I've had in magic

Went 3-1 with this:
4x Adanto Vanguard
4x Duskborne Skymarcher
4x Forerunner of the Legion
4x Martyr of Dusk
2x Mavren Fein, Dusk Apostle
4x Skymarcher Aspirant
4x Legion's Landing
4x Radiant Destiny
4x Thopter Arrest
4x Ixalan's Binding
2x Field of Ruin
16x Plains
4x Shefet Dunes

SIDEBOARD
2x Baffling End
2x Captured by the Consulate
2x Dusk // Dawn
2x Solemnity
3x Fragmentize
4x Authority of the Consuls
If Dominaria has Honor of the Pure or something similar I'll cream myself.

>wanted to build mono-g stompy but good green cards are on the rise
3 Rhonas into T4 Ripjaw into T5 Ghalta sounds so good.

Is Duskborne Skymarcher really necessary?

Yes, white weenie really likes Suntail Hawk, specially when paired up with a card that makes tokens every time you attack with a nontoken creature.

B/G Explore

can you post your GB explore list? It feels like it could be a thing

Deeproot waters are shit, Kumena doesnt need them.

No greater feeling than wiping a board with this guy.

Something with Trapjaw Tyrant. Not sure yet

What's up with combo? Are there really no combo decks that are even remotely viable?

how inflated the prices are. I just want 2x Twilight Prophet but I don't want to spend $20 on them
>brewing
some meme modern decks, don't plan on spending any money before dominaria comes out though

Me too, bro. Do you have a list? I've been curious about playing vampires myself, but it's mostly to play the Yahenni/Mavren/Elenda tango.

tappedout.net/mtg-decks/rivals-of-ixalan-aggro-vampires/?cache=2018-01-30 14:37:04.560734
I play with a casual group so the deck has never been against tier 1 meta stuff, hope it helps though.

Would Twilight Prophet be good in a mono black control deck? Since it doesn't care about vamps, only that you ascended, the card draw would help no?

Just depends on how reliably you can hit 10 permanents.

>Tetzimoc is so fucking based!
Eh, if it's prey counter ability was instant speed, maybe. Making it sorcery speed really limits it.

Casual fish players.
Merfolks in Standard face too much of a hard time with removal to be competitive.
U/G Merfolks in Modern also get hit hard with Blood Moon.
Mono U Merfolks is still the better version right now.

More than that it depends on you either being able to shred the opponent's hand or have enough reasons for them to waste their removal in something else since she dies to pretty much everything.
