if they're an elf and use a sword or bow, they're usually playing a 13y/o power fantasy

That they play, played, want to play, or have thought about playing D&D?

How do merchants become bladesingers?

>human 30 y/o fighter named John or similar
doesn't give a shit. Is the most likely guy to act like "oh, uh, is it my turn? I hit him with my sword then"
>dwarf anything
intense grognard or at least soon to be one. probably the party's biggest lorefag
>wizard player
either very insecure or a 70-year old curmudgeon in the body of a twentysomething minmaxer
>monk
depressives who don't think they deserve success. alternatively: dudebros

that's all stereotypes i can think of that hold some water.

>human
>ranger
>bladesinger
>???

Not much. Their first character maybe, and definitely reoccurring character traits, but one random character of theirs probably won't tell you much.

>either very insecure
explain?

In order to keep this manageable, how about restricting this to alignment, background, class, and race?

Well in this case, Arin clearly likes to play characters with shitty designs and backstories.

Probably meant that the player identifies with the wizard sterotype (frail, weak, only can do cool stuff with his mind)

...

Their fetish

Freckled tits.

I think there's another trait to consider too.

In my experience, men who play as female casters tend to be the most obnoxious players. More often than not they're antisocial waifufags who never actually engage with the game, but are overprotective of their character because they have some insane headcanon spiraled around her.

Probably nothing much. Now maybe if you had a list of all the characters they had ever played.

why is she dressed like a high end medieval whore?

Character name can tell you a LOT about the player.

>female elf druid, permanent animal form, foreverial cat
there because she is someone's girlfriend, to shy to make decisions
>female elf, fighty class, raised by [savage race who hates elves]
will just have the worst taste concerning anything, spotlight hog, high likelihood of drama
>human fighter with urban gutter background, overemphasizes most gritty lowbrow accent he can muster
underhanded drama timebomb, know it all, clamoring for moral high ground, wants to dominate social interaction, roleplay snob

If they're a guy playing as a girl, then they're either LGBT or questioning their sexuality.

Honestly this. Every player I met who gives their character some weirdo gibberish fantasy name has been a total chore to play with. Not because of the names themselves, but simply because it's a common trait amongst snippy drama queens autistically overprotective of their characters.

why's that insecure?

what about different names?

>what about different names?
I don't know what you mean.

besides gibberish names, what do names tell you about the player?

Rarely anything more. You basically have three kinds of character names:
>Boring
Very vanilla names like "John" or "Sara". Usually this player doesn't have much personality in their character. He's typically the guy who's just there to roll dice.
>Incomprehensible
Aforementioned fantasy gibberish name. Shit like "Menecelendil" or "Xaritherius" which no one will ever remember. This player will almost certainly get buttmad when no one can remember their character name, and will get even angrier when someone inevitably gives them a nickname.

This isn't a hard rule, just my observations. Personally, I usually go with the "short but unique" approach with names. The name is unorthodox but only one or two syllables. Shit like "Ari", "Rojak", "Rado", or "Magwa".

An elf named Bob taught her magic one time. Not making this up.

>A group of people who are literally payed to fuck around with each other play a D&D game that's just them fucking around with each other.

Color me shocked.

I have trouble giving my characters names that aren't just words (unless they're something from a book/mythology that I think no one will know). Not that I don't put any thought into the name, but legitimate names seem boring to me and I can't come up with complicated names without them sounding unnatural and pretentious.

Legitimate names are just words too. Violet Miller, for example.

Sure, but I think it's weird when it sounds like everyone's talking about people they know.

I'm about 90% sure that Aron actually wants to be a woman at this point.

What is this from that everyone seems to know the player?

GameGrumps played D&D for a bit.

>why's that insecure?
People with those problems or that kind of life would rather be something/someone else

GameGrumps. They're doing a D&D thing on the channel now. That's Egoraptor's character.

It's getting a little creepy. I remember in that Sonic Forces playthrough Dan asked some hypothetical about a grade school experience, and Arin had to point out he would be a girl in that scenario.

Like I play women in vidya a lot too but holy shit he's getting fucking weird with it. Dude's obsessed.

Why does Arin always play a female character? It's not that he sometimes pick one, it's that every time I've seen him play and he could chose between a male or female character, he always picks a female one. I can't think of a single exception.

Did Suzy really mindbreak him into becoming an SJW this hard? Is this why JonTron left?

>still going on about the sjw boogeyman
>2018

Maybe the dude has some weird gender shit going on, and he just likes it that way

>the sjw boogeyman
Am I the only one who remembers the time he described tsundere's as "rapey", among other things?

Hm, I wonder why

Isn't he Italian/Irish? Both of those groups have serious sexual identity issues that I've never really understood, but I think it's a byproduct of them living in Anglo countries. I don't think it's Suzy's fault and I don't think he's really a SJW, just a cuck.

In his defense, it sounded like he was conflating it with mindbreak porn. He described tsunderes as being girls who act bitchy towards guys but then being fucked until they like it. That's not what tsunderes are.

>male playing a female character

A weirdo or deviant, without fail. Makes roleplaying really awkward.

>look at a mannish man dude
vs
>look at a cute girl

Yeah I pick girl characters too

He's said it's because he likes their models better.

That's not what vexes me. It's when he says shit like "I would have been a girl" when talking about Real Life scenarios. It's weird. I don't think it's SJW shit, I think he just has a girl fetish. As in he really likes the concept of feminity beyond just basic sexual attraction. It's why in Sonic Forces he just matter of factly played a girl even though he's not a furry

>In order to keep this manageable, how about restricting this to alignment, background, class, and race?
and sex

It makes it awkward if you can't tell the difference between reality and fiction.
Do you honestly believe that cutting out about half of possible character concepts because "it's awkward", relying on a flimsy anecdote/strawman at that, is the right way to roleplay? Don't you think you might not have gotten the note about actually playing a role?
I've met people who play awkward female characters. Two of them did it for all of three minutes before I took them aside and talked to them (mainly just "you don't need to try so hard", because what makes it awkward is nerdlings who feel they have an obligation to play female characters as worlds apart from males, ruled entirely by their gender - don't do the voice, don't constantly mind, people are people regardless of gender).
One of them is irredeemable.
One person out of everyone I've ever played with. I'd say that female players playing male characters are a bigger red flag, because in my experience they're much more shameless and entitled about putting in their fetish and won't even try to hide it.
You can go ahead and explain why you think a choice to play a different character in a fictional world automatically translates into wanting to be that character, but I think you'll happen on a few holes in your own argument.
I'm not saying female characters are the only way, or that there aren't autists playing them, because they aren't and there are.
The people who dismiss them because of a pubescent fear of sexual deviancy and an inherent mental connection between women and sex, finding it hard to exclude either (now who's autismal?) are the worst, though.

>What can you tell about someone from their D&D character?

If they have one, you can tell they play shit-tier RPGs.

>be a mannish man dude
vs
>be a cute girl

There's more perspectives here. It depends how attached you are to it.

There's also the fact he chooses female characters when those characters are children or animals.

If you're choosing your characters based on who you want to be, and especially if you feel uncomfortable roleplaying a character who's different from you, you're getting into worrying territory.
It's why autistic kids have a weird relationship with costumes - either they wear them the whole day if they like them, or they go into frenzied, shrieking conniptions at the sight of them and go even more ballistic if they're made to wear them.
Unreasonable attachment to fictional characters is a typical autistic trait, sure, but lack of ability to emotionally or rationally distinguish between actor and character is actual mild psychosis or a phobia.

What's inherently wrong with wanting to play those characters' story?
Instantly seeing ulterior intents in someone's child or animal character says more about you than it does about them.
Believe it or not, being able to play almost whatever character and enjoying it is the norm - the most "normal" people I've played with, as well as most newbies who never took that turn past D&D, have all been very adventurous about deciding what to play, and seem to enjoy playing with ideas.
They don't read into "oh my god, what if someone thinks I'm a pedophile if I play this little girl", because let's be honest that's not the kind of connection an innocent, mentally healthy person would make.
They ask "can I play a child character too?", they get the answer ("yes, but it's hard and you have to try"), they play with the concept and they might move on.
But the sheer unbridled joy of character creation in someone who isn't always watching their back in fear of being accused of something they probably suspect themselves of the most is a big contrast to people on here.
What makes it weird, in my experience, is people thinking it's weird. Sit down, make that character and play that character.
And if you do get kicked out, sure, you might have autism (though it's probably someone else in the group), but at least it's not as autismal as sitting and shivering in a corner because you're afraid what people will think, never playing what you want and spending time sniping other people's character concepts.

if they play D&D I can say that they want another man inside of their wife.

>sword or bow
those are pretty basic weapons, maybe they're just uncreative.

OK, let's test this w/ a character from my most recent game.
Name: Theophilus Philippus Augustus von Hohenheim
Alignment: CG
Race: Human
Class: Wizard
Background: From the setting's not!Holy Roman Empire, young genius, insecure about age, sold soul to a devil, trying to get it back.

Let's see how this goes. I'll cut loose.
You're enthusiastic, first of all.
You did some research for your character and want to show it, but you also watch a chunk of shonen anime.
You have a strong sense of good and evil, but not necessarily justice.
You're a relatively skinny nerd in his twenties, with a chatty, outgoing demeanor that you get told occasionally to shut up with.
You struggle to play what you want in your group, choosing to play the wizard because people expect more character out of them, but feel limited by your group's opinions and different priorities (mainly combat).
You like flawed characters, but ones who're fundamentally heroic at the bottom of it - you can take moral debate and insecurity, but you want your character to go out like a hero, though you probably think it would be cool to have him become the villain too.

>>maybe they're just uncreative.
There's no pleasing you people
>sword and bow
Uncreative
>dashing rapier rogue
Minmaxing dex faggot
>halberd and crossbow
Historical weapons faggot
>dwarf with pike and warpick
Play a dwarf normally next time, with an axe or a hammer!
>try to include exotic weapons like the kusarigama
Stop being that guy!

Mostly correct, except for two things. 1. not 20 yet and 2. I'm the quiet guy. Excellent job catching the reference to Paracelsus, no one at the table got it. (A binge of FMAB may or may not have been an inspiration as well.)

It sounds like you want a man inside you

I did pin you as more like 18-19, but people here don't tend to take kindly to being called teenagers.
It's not really that subtle a reference, so I figure I was on point with your group.

>Baern Ash-hand
>NG
>Human
>Barbarian
>outlawed unjustly, became a mercenary so he could get justice, before giving into his rage and doing horrible things for a long time; when he realized his bloodlust cost him his chance at vengeance, he realized the emptiness of it and now tries to be nice and help people

You're going to seriously cringe when you look back on this in 10 years.

I prefer Violets cousin Violent Miller

>>dwarf with pike and warpick
>Play a dwarf normally next time, with an axe or a hammer!
Or maybe there's a huge cliff they need to navigate near their home to get to some particular resource, so they started using picks as part of their arsenal?

How about this one:
Name: Ilmiri Seltein (female)
Alignment: E (it was a 4e test game, otherwise I would have written LE)
Race: Human
Class: Fighter
Background: Born into a cult of the goddess of pain, decided torture for no purpose was shit, ratted on them to the guard, and got them all killed. Became a caravan guard as start of her quest for personal power enough to carve an empire from existing countries and/or wilderness.

>rogue
>character concept is based entirely around being a thief, they're stealthy and steal things because they can
It's always bad news in and out of character every time that I see this one.

youtu.be/i_A7RjLSQ2s?t=374

Do me next
>Name: Radu Ardelaan
>Alightment: Not D&D but he's basically LN
>Race: Kind of a dhamphir/tiefling type deal
>Class: More or less a paladin
>Background: His mother turned to dark magic to have a kid, which made him and his brother kind of twisted. Turned to religion to gain a sense of purpose and to try and atone for his deformity

I literally just use a fantasy name generator to pull out some gibberish name. There's no investment there

>Once a former merchant

So... she's a merchant?

>"I play girls because I like to look at a girl's butt all day."

Then why do you play girls in P&P games?

Then why do you play female kids and critters?

>Do you honestly believe that cutting out about half of possible character concepts
I'd argue at least half of all character concepts are gender neutral

And what of those that aren't?

Anyway every character is different depending on gender, even if the broader concept if gender neutral.

It's not wrong to play out an interesting character in a wide variety of genders and ages. It only becomes weird if a man(male) exclusively plays female characters, even when there is no justification of "they look hot" or whatever. This is indicative of deep-seated gender identity issues, or at least an unusual perception of his own masculinity as something to be feared.

>cult of the goddess of pain
Stopped right there
11/10 cringey edgefest

Maybe you should have kept reading to the bit where she fucked off from it and hates what they stand for.

I don't think Arin has deep gender issues. I think he just really, really likes women, and not just in a sexual way.

Still gets a little weird sometimes though.

>Born into a cult of the goddess of pain, decided torture for no purpose was shit, ratted on them to the guard, and got them all killed.

Fucking teenagers. Never satisfied with what their family can provide.

>and not just in a sexual way.
what

My most common character archetype was an Elf who was un-Elf like. I guess I like the stats, but not the Elves themselves. One was an Elf with a complex who wanted to be a tough warrior despite being a DEXfag stringbean, the other was a drunkard wizard who tried to spread magic when the world has magic reserved for the elite. What does that say about me?

>people actually make characters this awful

is it Reddit?

I mean I think he really enjoys the aesthetic of women, in the same way someone could really like samurai armor or Imperial Stormtroopers.

Such as someone who wants to be a samurai or Imperial Stormtrooper?

>or questioning their sexuality.

Hey, you should question your sexuality once every month!

So far, for me the answer was always heterosexual cisgendered male, but you never know when its gonna change due to, for example, traumatic head injury.

I assume he means idolatry

So, he’s a lesbian?

I dont have a /ss/ fetish and I still made it the background of my warlock

Obviously.

I guess I should clarify. Arin has a weird obsession with women which goes beyond sexual. He's even said several times he "would be" a girl in different hypothetical scenarios. But as of right now, I believe Arin knows he isn't a woman and he can't ever be a woman. At least not the kind of woman he would want to be. For all people bitch about Suzy, I think she's the reason for it. Getting regular sex has certainly done a lot to keep him from wanting to become his own waifu.

>really, really likes women
>wants to be one
Pick both

The mere inclusion of a cult of the goddess of pain in the background is enough to make it a terrible cringefest

I hope you realize you're only making him sound even more deranged

Perhaps you should reevaluate your kinks

Im curious how a braineashed from birth cultish would suddenly decide an intrinsic aspect of what they consider true is wrong

Never said he wasn't. Guy's an upjumped Florida Man who never even finished high school and his animations are almost certainly the product of a man who drew porn of Misty from Pokemon. Hesade it so far because despite everything he's pretty charismatic and clearly knew how to game the YouTube system.

I just don't think he's the specific flavor of crazy most 4Channers assume from someone who is that hung up on women.

>But as of right now, I believe Arin knows he isn't a woman and he can't ever be a woman.

nibib.nih.gov/science-education/science-topics/tissue-engineering-and-regenerative-medicine

If he lives long enough, he might be able to become full woman. However why would you want to be women, if you are man. I can understand why woman woudl like to be a man, men are much better than women when it coems to aesthetics. Women have weak, soft bodies, too wide hips, two bags of fat hanging from their chests and last but not least, their genitals are ugly. In our transhuman future, nobody should have to endure the suffering that being woman no doubt is.

The "I just want to stare at a girl's butt" excuse only works when the female avatar is the only attractive character, an actual horny player would rather use a male avatar to self-insert

I know a lot of people that get uncomfortable rping characters different from them. In these cases though, I would attribute this to the fact that they aren't very used to rping in general or that they're just dumb rather than any real mental disorder.

trans lesbians are OP.

What about me?
Race: Human
Class: Wizard (Transmutation)
Background: Comes from a small mountain village in not!bavaria, and is out on an adventure to send money home to his mother

West European, most likely some kind of Wessi, pretends to be refugee welcoming liberal but is a nazi deep inside.

...

I've tried kissing guys, it's just really not in my wheelhouse. Sometimes I just want to step out if my comfort zone role-playing wise, sometimes the aesthetic I have in mind works better as female.
