Its not like Its from our World, Baka!

What are some good names for Not! Countries etc?
Easy Example, the Not! Roman Empire in one setting I play is called Bosporan Empire instead.

This is for general discussion altough I would be pretty amazed if you had some Not! Names for a Late Ancient Setting im currently creating, for Romans, Huns, Germanic Tribes etc.

I usually name my not!Soviet countries something starting with Z. Zarya, Zemlya, Zavodskaya, Zenit, etc.

>Not! Names for a Late Ancient Setting
Not!Romans: Latinium, Remunum (Since Romanum is from Romulus, this is from Remus)
Not!Germanic Tribes: Totenatii (especially if they have necromancy), Wagnerii, Totengothii

>Zemlya
Damn you, now im craving Semla

You can usually just use individual historical regions that sound roughly analogous to the language. i.e. Not!France could be easily reskinned as Aquitaine, Gallia or Varessia because they still have a "french" sounding name.

Not!Romans and Not!Byzantines I like using Augusta Major and Augusta Minor.

Albion is one that I've probably seen used half a dozen times for not!Britain.

>Alternate World where Remus is the Victor
This is pretty fucking good idea, since I wanted to make it a fantasy setting, some myths are literally true, the pagan druids for example can throw real curses at their enemys, minotaurs, harpyies etc exist, and the Roman Empire sees itself surrounded by all that, and has to survive etc.

I usually do this. Ran a not!World War 2 game and had names like Shenandoah, Saguenay, Sequoyah, Aurora, Sardovia, Ostylvania, etc. It gives people shorthand ideas of what each country is based on at least.

>Wagnerii

I like to look up what countries used to be called in ancient history and base the names off those. For example, I used Leutemark for a Not-Germany in one game.

>Remunum
I like this "minor faction that got crushed actually became dominant" thing for alternate names. With that in mind...

>France
Burgundy/Occitania. Alternatively go the Izetta route and call it the Thermidor Republic. Or go full Valkyria Chronicles with Gallia.

>United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland
United Commonwealth of Celtic Kingdoms (basically UK but with the Heptarchy instead of a united England and it's all Celtic. Like an island Holy Roman Empire).

>Spain
Andaluz

Portugal : Lusitania.

Linguini
Kartoffel
Kappamaki
Grenouille
Dafad
Cocacola
Erable
Lomain
Kissel
I'm pretty sure that's all the major players in WWII

Other than cocacola they all sound pretty good. I know that
>Linguini = Italy
>Kartoffel = Germany
>Kappamaki = Japan
>Grenouille = France
>Cocacola = America
But what are the others?

Russia - Union of Yuktobanian Republics, Orussia if you're feeling lazy
Spain - Kingdom of Sapin, Hispania
U.S. - Osean Federation, Liberion
Germany - Principality of Belka, Karlsland
Generic South America - Democratic Republic of Leasath
Italy - Republic of Emmeria, Romagna

I am not an original person.

>Liberion
Why not Freedomia while you're at it?
Is what I wanted to say until I googled it and realize that's actually a thing.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedonia

Not!Earth: Erde, Thraya, Elysia.
Not!Romans: Tiberian Empire, Remians, Umbrian Republic.
Not!Germanic: Ulreik, Albehallen, Teutoheim.
Not!Slav: Volgast, Kizhich Tsardom, Gornychi, Novaskoya Principality.

Not!England: Commonwealth of Oxland, Brimann Kingdom.
Not!Spain: Cortesian Empire, Catalgo Kingdom, Cabarijo Republic.
Not!Persia: Hamaddi Empire, Al-Nadum Sultanate, Khaseem.
Not!China: Tianlu Empire, Taidan, Xia, Khatai.
Not!Japan: Kamigami Empire, Yagato Shogunate, Jodo.

Not!USA: Free States of Magellania, Federated Union of Atlantea.
Not!Soviet: Socialist Union of Karbassia, Workers' Republic of Kasenia.

dafad is welsh for sheep so Great Britian
Erable is French for Maple, so Canada
Lomain is a variation of Lo Mein, so China
Kissel is a Russian dish.

German Empire (The WW1 on) - Stahlborn Empire, Heideburg Kingdom, Nibelreik
Berlin/Capital - Berun, Brandburg, Nurnburg
UK - Great Pictonia, United Ebdanian Kingdoms
EU - Alliance of Yuronia, Great Republic Urland

Pretty much this. If you want Not!Germany find a tiny country that used to be part of the Holy Roman Empire and use its name.

I take the names of obsolete provinces/kingdoms of the state I want to bring in play.
Been seeing images and webms of that anime around, am kinda interested, but also getting serious nauseating magical realm vibes from it. Dare I ask?

>Thraya
'Thraya, cunt!

Also, Al-Nadum for Not!Persia is kinda weird/doesn't fit that well, unless it's been Not!Arab-ized, or it's one and the same with Not!Arabs. May I suggest Khosra, Arslana, Ghazmadi?

Beep beep, out of the way, best not!countries coming through.

Stop shilling your edgelord anime for pedophiles

There was a french comic about this, ask /co/ about it. Gorgeous art.

The worst names are ones purposefully made to sound strange or unique or different or alien.
Instead just do this
>select a random word with between 2-4 syllabals
>has to be random, no silly references or root words allowed
>add or remove letters until it sounds different enough to be unrecognizable as the original word
This way you can come up with made up words and names without stressing over some meaning or historical significance that's in all likelihood going to be extremely on the nose anyway. Uncommon words work best but this works for any word to make a noun that sounds plausible for the language.
Go on, try it

>forgetting grorious Fusou

nothing magical realm about it

In my not!Cold War setting I have named the two main superpowers Polaris (USA analogue with Nordic influences, located in the northernmost continent) and Keter (USSR analogue with a more middle eastern spin, located in not!Australia). For the rest of the countries, I name them after constellations.

The first names are from the Ace Combat games, the second names are from the anime Strike Witches.

>for pedophiles

I... don't remember any fan service?

I lift names from Dominions 5.

>Romagna
[muffled BURDÉL in the distance]

>Andaluz

Glorious. 10/10 worldbuilding for a lighthearted setting.

Thanks, gotta check that out.

Oh blyat I am hearing the theme song
ALL RISE FOR GLORIOUS ARSTOTZKA ANTHEM

So it is perfectly watchable?

Aside from things like MC looking ugly. I recommend the manga, which has much better visual art.

Thank you.

If you read the manga, be sure to read all of chapter 11 before moving on to chapter 12. mangakakalot.com/manga/youjo_senki doesn't have all of chapter 11.

> Fuck It, I'm Going With Geography Option:

Take a dominant geological or geographic feature, extend it to cover the entire land.

E.g., Tiber river becomes Tiberia
Euphrates river gives its name to the Efra'eeti Sultanate
Rhine river creates the Rhein Kaiserreich
Ural mountains become the Uralskiyan Expanse

> Fuck It, I'm Going With Etymology Option

I take the name of a country and turn it into a calque or pun in another language.

E.g., Saxony becomes Dagerland
England becomes the Hook
France becomes the Kingdom of Javelot
America becomes Hemmereich
Welsh become the Outlands

> Fuck It, I'm Just Straight Up Stealing A Name CS Lewis Style Option

I take the name of an obscure town in the general area I like and turn it into the name of a country.

Half of the bizarre fantasy setting my players have found themselves in has been based on where 90% of the adult films in the United States are filmed. Another half is based on various parts of Texas, Denmark, Romania and parts of the Middle East. I regret nothing.

>looks like a fucking boot. Back to the drawing board.
Is that an insult to Italy?

Will do.
All ideas of this thread, neatly summed. Well done.
Self-irony of the worldbuilding threads, more like.

>Self-irony of the worldbuilding threads, more like.
Do you mean that it's ripping on world building or do you mean something else?

On worldbuilding and the "constructive critique" of it both.

I have heard that the Light Novel, Manga, and Anime are all worth looking into and they are all different. There are some differences plot wise.
There is also a web novel. I haven't looked at the LN or the Manga yet.
(by the way I'm )
I still stand by the manga being better, but the anime was still enjoyable.

I mean I haven't looked at the LN or the web novel yet.
