When the game gets semi good is when you're defending something and have to have more sustained positioning and movement since you're attacked from many sides.
The game really could have used either a more tactical slowed down version with pause or turns or more intricate scenarios where you have to really do things carefully not to fail or the nature of the game would need to change to primarily being about the enemy coming to you with encounters being a lot more deadly and using abilities and maneuvers much more slow and deliberate, but hten it wouldn't be dawn of war.
So really they should just have stuck to basebuilding and made a sequel to the first game but with better graphics and just play up the cover mechanics and include the suppression they have in this game.

Some of the more defensive armies in multiplayer are actually fun as shit. Turtling as IG is fantastic.
The Tyranid campaign is also pretty standout, because of just how badly it shits on the core singleplayer gameplay concept.
